Great starter mac or media server.......2006-11-11

The generation 1 mac mini is a great starter mac. I upgraded mine to 1GB at CompUSA and use it, along with an 160GB external drive, as my main media server. I have almost completed the process of importing all my CDs and some movies into iTunes. Importing video from a digital camcorder is quite easy with iLife but the G4 CPU is not up to the task for quick video editing. The newer Intel Core Duo mac mini should handle this easlity though.

This version of the Mac mini works very well for the purpose it was bought - keep in touch with family. Be it Skype or iChat, voice and video connections are of good quality. The only surprise was that the Mac Mini does not have a microphone line in, but the iSight camera connected via Firewire has a built-in microphone, so it works like a charm.
The SuperDrive allows to burn home videos in excellent quality. The Mac takes it's time doing the mpeg encoding, but thats OK as it is so silent when working you hardly notice the computer is on.
The i-Software is easy enough to use, that even my mom is happy to make use of the computer. All in all a great buy - everything works, setup is simple and no blue screens or weird error messages.

They sell old stock items which may have old software. I called Apple to register this and they told me Amazon should have NOT sold this. Apple only sells items within 90 days and this product was over 4 months.

For all those people who are concerned about space restrictions and want a powerhouse computer that will not need a large footprint, the Mac Mini is the perfect solution. Packing a boatload of power into a computer yay bigger than a coaster, there is no better power/space combination in the entire computing world!

For all the Windows users who don't want to make the switch to the Mac, with the newest Mac OS you will not look back once you get used to the ways that Apple does things the way they are SUPPOSED to be done.

As per usual Apple, the design of the Mac Mini is perfect, and it's so quiet that your own heartbeat will no doubt be louder than this quiet monster.

If you need a solid family computer that will allow you to surf the net, work with spreadsheets, check e-mail, or just do 99% of the things that you would like to be doing (I don't say 100% because it's not a gaming machine), pick up a Mac Mini for your home office, kitchen, ANYWHERE and you will NOT be disappointed!!

I got my mac mini a couple months ago. I've wanted a Mac for a while now and finally got one. Im a poor college student that loves writing and recording music. I use Logic 6 on my Mini and it runs great. Cant do anything extreme with it, but it gets the job done. The main reason i like Mac so much is the software. Microsoft still has their head in the dirt and if they dont pull it out soon Mac is going to have an empire bigger than theirs. Who could possibly say XP is a better OS than Tiger. Everything on a mac just makes sense. It takes some getting use to, but once you get away from the Windows way of thinking you kinda never go back. Unix systems just run better, sorry Bill. Gates always use to talk about inovation and how they're pushing the industry forward. From the previews I've seen of Longhorn it looks like they're mimicing Mac and havent come up with anything original or innovative. Yeah Steve Jobs is a bit of an egomaniac, and likes to have all the control, but at least he has cool people working with him that make cool stuff.

The screen is amazing. No dead pixels at all and it is bright. I haven't used the speakers because I have a sound system on my computer. Amazing price for a 19 inch that can actually watch movies without ghosting! It comes with both a DVI cord and a VGA cord. Top quality, and the base it metal with just black plastic on top of it. Very sturdy.

When I bought this product several months ago, I set it up in five minutes and was burning DVDs in no time. Nowadays I don't burn DVDs as often, but it's still the fastest CD-RW drive I have and it plays DVDs and CDs. What more do you need?

I have it stacked on my Dell 4550 that came with a DVD-ROM and a CD-RW drive. I keep my two most played video games in those two drives and use my Lacie to do everything else. It's a great primary drive: installing programs, ripping CDs, burning any kind of disk (CD and DVD)...

I also want to mention that I've never had a malfunction of the drive (I just reviewed an external HD that sometimes was not recognized by my system), it's always provided top-notch performance, whether with my notebook or my desktop.

This is a five-star product all the way!

Good performance and value.......2004-06-05

I purchased this DVD ROM device to perform a specific primary task - as a back-up device for my laptops (I have three) - with some secondary needs, such as transferring some of my older VHS tapes to DVD. It meets all of these needs perfectly.

Set-up is easy, and the software that ships with it is perhaps not world-class, but does the job.

Installation and user documentation are clear and easy to follow; however, I have not needed to use the manufacturer's technical support, so I cannot comment on the quality of that.

Note - I purchased this device based more on price than features, so if you are looking for a full featured DVD ROM, or one with more sophisticated software, you may want to shop around and compare others on the market. If your needs are relatively simple, such as mine are, and want to burn data, music and video at an affordable price, this model is a solid buy.

Excellent Drive.......2002-01-03

I have had this drive for over a year now, and am overall very pleased with it. The speed is everything promised, and is extremly quiet.

I have only had 2 problems with the drive, both easily corrected.

2 months ago, the drive completly died. After emailing Kenwood's support, I received an RMA number within 2 days. I received a brand new drive 10 days after sending my old one. What can I say? Kenwood support is excellent.

The other problem I encountered was after rewiring my system and upgrading to XP Pro Corporate. The drive wanted to recognize most of my CDs as audio dics. It turned out that the drive didnt like sitting on my ATA 100 controller. I don't blame this on my drive, but rather the native VIA motherboard drivers XP uses.

If you want the best CDROM known to man, get the drive. It's well worth the price of admission.

Even though I was satisfied with the performance of my kenwood CDRom drive (while it worked), it mysteriously died after only one and one-half years of minimal usage.

I was a little disappointed that a CDRom that carried the price tag it had would prove unreliable. I still haven't heard back from the company about the possibility of a replacement (approx. 3 months time).

Fast drive, but only when it works right........2001-07-03

I bought my 72X Kenwood drive in January of 2000. During that time I've had a sort of love-hate relationship with it. It seems to have a lot of bugs that need to be worked out in it still. Specifically with games it has LOTS of problems. It wouldn't even work at all with Black & White until I unchecked the DMA mode option. I have had problems with a lot of other games as well. If I had to do it over again I would save myself the [price] and go with an Asus drive.

Amazingly fast and quiet.......2000-11-12

This is what happens when a company THINKS instead of just producing the same stuff everyone else does. Instead of running at high speed and putting a real big number on their drive and then telling you when you get it home that the drive only reaches that MAX speed at certain points on the disk (like everyone else does)... Kenwood did something smart. They read seven tracks at a time. This means that the drive spins slower and yet reads faster than other drives. It also means that it is virtually silent (unlike most other drives).
