A one word review would suffice: "WOW!!!"

But, I will elaborate..... :-) This is the best laptop I've ever owned. It is my fourth Macintosh is just under three years. My first was a clamshell iBook. I then owned a PowerBook G3 and an eMac G4 but decided that I wanted portability in my G4. I bought this PowerBook G4 667 and never looked back. This was the most intelligent purchase I've ever made in the computer world.

Apple designed a truly wonderful products. It is speedy, beautiful, and functional. I could not ask for more in a notebook computer. Thanks, Apple! I'm now a dedicated and loyal user.

The Best Thing Since the Internet........2002-12-07

I've had my Powerbook since mid March. It wasn't a few days ago that I realized that I made the switch from a PC user to Apple user when booted up my PC for the first time in a couple of weeks for the purpose of moving all my personal files from big clunky PC to the Powerbook.

I'm not even going to get into how cool this thing looks, you can see in the picture that this an extremely handsome piece of hardware ... I'll delve right into the reason why you'd should buy this thing. Lets face it, these things cost an awful lot of money and it would be quite foolish to buy this thing on its good looks alone.

As a lot of you know, Apple has completely redone the operating system that they ship with this thing (OS X). To cut to the point, its a flavor of the BSD operating system with a Mac GUI called Aqua running on top of it.

What does that mean you ask?

Its running on a flavor of the UNIX operating system which will rarely crash, if ever. So if you're into tinkering around with GNU/Linux or the like, you'll love this thing. If you always hear about all the cool things that computer hacker types can do with computers but have no idea in where to start with these things you'll love this thing too. Apple has a GUI called that runs on top of it that has all the cool stuff that can take hours setting up yourself as simple as (literally) clicking on a button that says start.

For instance, if you have a connection to the internet (dialup, cable modem, dsl, etc.) you can set this laptop up to be a full fledged Unix server that can host your web pages and that you can telnet into in a matter of seconds (go into System Preferences and click start). So you won't have to spend hours trying to set this up if its not your thing. If it is your thing, you can still get into the guts of the computer and do it at the command prompt as you would in Linux.

The one thing that I was very weary about in buying this thing was can you find software for this thing and will the stuff I use on Windows work on this. To quickly answer it, yes Microsoft Office, Photoshop files, mp3s, etc. all work perfectly fine once you transfer them over. If your into that sort of thing, there's just as many Peer to Peer sharing programs for Apple as there are for Windows, the Mac ones might even be better.

As for the downsides of this thing ... there are a few but none that should stop anyone from thinking of checking out the Powerbook from not buying it.

The battery life is not as good as advertised - if you plan on using this for extended amounts of time before recharging it (over three hours) you should strongly consider getting the extra battery. Also rumor has it that since its so thin that the dust and grease from your fingers that get on the keys can damage the LCD when its closed (that hasn't happened to me but I believe it ... putting a piece of paper between the keyboard on LCD when you store it solves this problem).

Software wise my only complaint is dialup connections are painfully slow. A 52K connection seems like it may as well be a 14.4 connection. If you have any type of a high speed internet access this will not effect you one bit.

That's my take on this machine. I think its the greatest thing in computing since the Internet explosion and I just wanted to put in my two cents on it.

PowerBook Rocks.......2002-07-05

I've had my PowerBook G4 since January. I was shopping around for a new computer and came across this beauty. Up to that point I had been strictly a PC user. However, I was sold on this computer. Sure, it took a little getting used to a new OS, but that only took a few days.

When I bought this computer, I splurged. I brought the RAM to 512 MB, I bought an iPod (5GB) and an airport station, plus Office X. Yes, it cost me a small fortune, but it's still worth it. I love this computer.

This computer is FAST (even at 667 MHz)!! It never seems to slow down. I can play a DVD in a window and be working on email or in Excel or on a website and it keeps up. OS X is incredibly stable and has only crashed once in 7 months. Oh yeah, it's also great looking. I sit at Starbucks with it and constantly get people asking me about it.

Why only 4 stars? Battery life doesn't seem to be that great, even after turning the brightness down on the screen. However, Apple has recently tweaked the DVD player and I can play a three hour DVD with no problems. For cross-country trips, I bought an extra battery. Also, the keyboard presses up against the screen when it's closed and has made some marks on the LCD display.

If you can afford it, I HIGHLY recommend an iPod.

Like many windows users, I bought into the fallacy that you didn't want an apple computer because of the lack of software - until I saw this Powerbook at an Apple store, did some research, found all the software I wanted was available for apple computers, and realized that I need not support the dark dominion of Microsoft anymore. Bought the computer and I have never regretted it. OS X is great too, no more one program crashing the entire computer. Beautiful in looks and execution, fast, with a RW drive, light, beautiful screen. If Apple had been as unscrupulous as Microsoft in it's early days we might all be using these wonderful computers.

An absolute out-of-date dog. As a JVC fan I bought one of these for a "great price." After cutting a hole in my entertainment center, and spending 11 hours trying to hook my DVD player up (2 trips to the stores and tech support calls to JVC and Magnavox), I still didn't have a functioning sound system. The DVD input on the RX-558 is 6-channel RCA ONLY...S-video, optical, or coaxial need not apply. So unless you are sure your DVD output matches up (a salesman even assured me it would work with my DVD player)-- AVOID this DTSless mess of a receiver.

I got this reciever and a set of Cambridge SoundWorks Speakers for a little hometheater set up in my bedroom, nothing too fancy. Sure it isn't Dolby Digital, but it has great sound. If I ever need Dolby Digital I can alway by a DVD player with a built in decoder.

I'm diving into the realm of photography. I have always loved it, and now it was time to buckle down and become serious. I bought this camera and never looked back. This camera is by far the best camera I have ever owned. I love all the control I have over my photography. I never become disapointed and the pictures come out perfect everytime. I don't recomend this camera for a beginner, the controls are way to advaced for most. This is a good camera for a serious photographer or student. I used to think my Minolta was unable to be beat, until I got this camera.

On the N-90s.......2003-11-03

This is the best digitally controlled 35mm SLR I have ever used. The price tag may be high, but the features you get in one package make it worthwhile. The auto focus lock button and auto exposure lock button are located where they should be. The auto focus selector (single, continuous, manual) allows full control in every situation. The metering system is extremely accurate, and the built in spot meter is a plus. The control dial rather than an arrow up/down configuration gives you much faster control. I recommend this camera for the professional, or students. The vast amount of digital control might be confusing for the beginner.

Disappointing........2007-09-12

I've owned this Dream System for 3 years, and have had continuous troubles with it. First malfunction was when the unit's disc eject mechanism broke. Second malfunction was when the unit started to experience startup troubles and would repeatedly cycle through its power-on/power-off sequence. The latest malfunction involves an annoying high-pitched whine emitting from the speakers when the unit is playing in Video 1 or Video 2 mode. Unlike other owners who experienced this problem, I am not willing to open the casing and poke around at the unit's innards. I'm just fed up with this system and would discourage any prospective buyer from considering this unit or any future models branded Sony Dream System.

The Sony Diaster Machine DAV-FC8.......2005-06-26

This is by far the worst piece of crap I ever purchased. I always loved SONY until now. This DAV-FC8 is far from a dream. It is a nightmare. The sound system actually works fairly well. However, here are the issues I have had, and I do not use the DVD player very often, keep that thought as you read this list:

1. When turning the unit off, after it has been on for a while, I get a message on the unit that reads, "Standby" which blinks for about 30 seconds, then the unit goes off. I checked the troubleshooting section in the manual--which is a joke--and it pointed me to wiring. I checked and checked the wiring which I found was perfect. It isn't a wiring problem.

2. When playing a DVD, every single time I play one, it freezes up, and I lose remote control of DVD features only. I can adjust everything else on it, but DVD controls, go figure.

3. I have come to the conclusion it is a weak component in the unit, due to a cheap part which overheats. SONY will never admit it, but they screwed up in their design and there is no way to fix this problem.

Why did I get to this point on heat and a particular component? Because I have 35 years experience in electronics. I have soldered parts into units. This is a design flaw that will never be solved.

DO NOT BUY the NIGHTMARE machine.

I noticed in another review that a person recommended buying separate components. I totally agree with this recommendation. Why? Because if you have a problem with one component, you do not have to replace everything or even get it repaired. You have a better investment if you buy separate components. Spend the extra money up front, it is definitely worth it.

Mechanical Trouble Not the first time either.......2004-07-06

I purchased a different sony about 5 months ago as an open box item from circuit city. (I'll get to this one in a minute) When we got it home it accepted a CD then decided not to give it back. Then it refused more cd's. When you would turn the unit on the elevator would go up and down relentlessly and refuse to stop. Argh, we took it in to send for repair (we bought the extended warranty). 6 weeks later we find out it has to be sent to Sony. 3 weeks later, sony says it has physical damage. When it is returned it has NEW damage. Somewhere in shipping it was damaged and due to that they refused to fix it! Circuit City made good (they note any physical damage prior to shipping and there had been none) and replaced it with this DAV-FC8. For a couple of months it had worked GREAT. We forgot about the old one until this last week when I tried to put a DVD in and it loudly rejected it. Then the elevator did the up and down thing. Argh, again. Well, hopefully they don't damage it in shipping again and it will be fixed this time. Well, This is too much of a coincidence for us. We're officially unimpressed with the Sony Dream Systems. Don't get me wrong, we love Sony, we should own stock with how much we own of theirs just to get some money back out of our investments. The only thing left in our house that isn't Sony is our televisions. Even our alarm clock is a Sony. We were so sure of Sony products that our last Camcorder, we opted to not purchase the warranty from Best Buy. No trouble and we don't expect any. The Dream systems seem to have that cornered.

WORST PURCHASE! PROBLEMS PROBLEMS PROBLEMS.......2004-06-13

I LOVE SONY PRODUCTS... HOWEVER, THIS IS THE WORST. I HAVE HAD MY SYSTEM FOR LESS THAN 3 MONTHS... AND HAVE HAD TO SEND MY SYSTEM BACK TO SONY 2 TIMES FOR THE SAME PROBLEM. THE SYSTEM HAS A MIND OF ITS OWN AND OFTEN WILL NOT ACCEPT A DVD OR CD. IF IT DOES ACCEPT, IT MAY NOT EJECT IT! THE MOTOR IN THE CAROSEL CHANGER IS A CONSTANT PROBLEM. THE ODD THING IS THAT I ONLY USE THE SYSTEM MAYBE TWICE A WEEK. IT'S NOT DISPLAYED IN AN AWKWARD LOCATION. JUST THE WORST -- IS AN UNDERSTATEMENT.
