Imagine being able to take your entire music collection with you everywhere you go. The Archos Jukebox 6000 portable MP3 player makes that dream real in a surprisingly small package and at a surprisingly low price. With its 6 GB portable hard drive (similar to the ones used in laptop PCs), the Jukebox 6000 can store over 100 albums and offers the tools you need to easily navigate and manage your tunes.

When we took the Jukebox 6000 into hand, we were immediately surprised at its small size. Measuring 4.5 by 3.2 x 1.3 inches and weighing only 12 ounces, it's much smaller and lighter than other similar players with 6 GB hard drives. The unit runs on a rechargeable NiMH battery that can deliver up to eight hours of playback on a single charge.

Installation went very smoothly, aided by the clearly written manual. We inserted the driver disk and plugged the unit into our PC's USB port. Windows found and installed the appropriate drivers, and the Jukebox 6000 showed up as a hard drive in Windows Explorer. (The Archos Jukebox 6000 is compatible with Windows 98, Me, or 2000, or a Mac running OS 8.6 or higher.) Transferring music files couldn't have been simpler--we just dragged and dropped files as with any hard drive. The Jukebox also works as an external hard drive for storing nonmusic files, making it perfect for making backups or transporting large files.

Of course, with so much storage capacity, organization becomes an issue. Since it's essentially a USB hard drive, we used folders to arrange our files. We made a Rock folder to store all our head-banging albums, a Jazz folder for the Louis Armstrong collection, and so on. The Jukebox shows the folder names on its backlit LCD display, making navigation very simple. Using the included MusicMatch Jukebox software, we could also create MP3 playlists of our favorite songs, an extremely useful feature for organizing music.

The buttons on the face of the unit offer quick navigation, and there's a menu-driven system for setting volume, bass/treble, and random and repeat modes. The Jukebox comes with a pair of plastic headphones that clip over your ears and have a headband that swings around the back of your head. We found them comfortable to wear, and they provided a clear, crisp sound. There's also a line-out for connecting to your stereo system.

The Jukebox is quite rugged and very resistant to jolts, and it comes with a carrying case, which adds further protection. However, the manual recommends you keep it within a 30-degree angle of a horizontal or vertical position. Unlike a flash-memory based MP3 player, which has no moving parts, the Jukebox might not be ideal for taking along while jogging or doing other intense activity.

The Archos Jukebox 6000 finally puts an end to the problem of which songs to put on your MP3 player by letting you include all of them. It sets a new standard for MP3 players, offering huge storage capacity in a small, well-designed package. --Ken Feinstein

I've had this product for a number of years....and it is still working great. The ease of popping batteries out/in for recharge or replacement is fantastic. My typical use has been on long flights, driving a distance, and mall/trail walking. An IPOD is certainly smaller and lighter weight but this product fits my needs and I'm certain it will continue for many more years to come.

My Archos Jukebox 6000 was defective right out of the box. When I contacted their customer service, the representative suggested I try standard batteries instead of rechargeable ones. When this didn't solve the problem I contacted them again. They then informed me they would repair the unit for "a flat fee of $65.00".

good...but not that good.......2004-11-06

Bought my archos 2yrs ago. Astonished by the amount of available space. Ended up converting and downloading most of my music colection into it. Used it evry day. It finally died a couple of weeks ago first due to battery connections stopping the re-charge, then catastrophic failure of the control buttons. Very Sad, much missed. ow looking for a replacement.

This product has OTB (out of the box) failures galore. I am not a demanding person of sound quality but here is the skinny: Shoddy workmanship on control button, lousy support, no documentation that helps with troubleshooting or even has simple instructions to shut it off, support software package failed to install on my computer and generaly faulty at birth. The hard drive immediately failed and the unit sounds like a mini 747 at take off when the hard drive is accessed. AVOID IT AT ALL COSTS..IT IS GARBAGE.

ive had it for about a year and in the beggingin it ran great. now i cant even connect it to my pc. i have win 2k pro and win xp pro. as soon as i connect it, i get the bsod. ive never gotten the bsod b4 while runing xp or 2k. get a ipod, it costs more, but u get better quality and faster transfer speeds. in conclusion stay far away from archos products!!

Fine card, but packaging could be nicer........2000-05-23

I've tried this brand and the Lexar Media brand (which purportsto have 4x speed) and have found no appreciable difference inday-to-day usage. This seems like a fine card.

My only complaint about the New Media Tech cards is that the plastic card holder cases are physically much larger than they need to be and the way the card snaps into the case is a bit of a pain. If you carry and swap a couple of cards, this is a minor inconvenience.

this product actually is operating system independent. You use web browser to set it up. It does come with setup software for windows 95, 98, nt, windows 2000. But it is not needed to setup, all need to do is hook up printer to it and press print test button on it. Then see the ip address it is set to. Type that ip address in a web browser and the con fig screen comes up.

Sony has not changed its way of making TVs.......2004-05-03

The same I see with Sony Television sets. After seeing Sony TVs during the last 20 years my thoughts were to buy a Sony to replace my 15-year-old Magnasonic 21". The definition is really high, near to HDTVs', with crisp, sharp edges. With the DVD plugged in composite and a gaming console in S-Video, the Set couldn't be more optimized for top quality viewing. The form of the image itself, however, is unbalanced, the screen is tilting and the tilt correction won't correct the problem. There is sometimes image blinking, and while it's only a temporary problem, it can become very annoying afterwards.
Display on screen is the same it has always been with Sony. Green font will sometimes look transparent and will be hard to read, especially when the image's bright or has vivid colors. Channel and video input labels are a big plus, but a storage of 40 channels is not enough, considering that even basic cable surpass 50 channels.
The menus are easy to use, and the looks are very simple compared to the 27" model.
Sound is crystal clear and has good bass response. But in all fairness the plastic set cannot handle the speakers. When fairly loud, the set will vibrate causing huge annoyance in the sound, even when the Bass is at a normal position.
The headphones jack is something extremely rare to be found in TVs nowadays, and that's a good gesture from Sony to put in one on this model.
But overall it's a fairly good model, but if you want to buy it, you buy the name. Similar sets will cost only three quarters the price of this one, and will offer the same quality as this one.

A great TV at a bargain price........2003-11-06

I buy a new TV about once every 20 years, so I spend a lot of time agonizing over the choice. My previous TV was a Mitsubishi 19" TV purchased in 1979. I went with the Sony model in part because the 24 inch version fits the same hole in my stereo & TV entertainment center as did the 19" TV.

Its hard to talk much about TV features, there are so many that it difficult to know which will be usefull. The picture has some pre-set settings that are useful. They label them for sports, movies etc.. Typically they change the lighting and color to correspond to a mood. It often works better than having to play with the individual settings manually. another nice feature is the steady sound. I didn't realize what it was at first until I remembered I often took the PBS station off the cable tuner because it would drop in so loud when I had the volume up high. Another reviewer spoke of trouble with the sound. I believe his problem could have been fixed by changing the sound mode. There are various spacial choices and more direct sounding modes as well.

More features of interest, include a quick scan set of favorite channels, a last channel feature, and up/down channels button along with the direct channel number inputs. The remote control itself is pretty useful, it can also support typical VCRs and DVD players as well as the TV.

Like most Sony's the picture quality is unmatched, the color is true, and the detail sharp. Check this side by side with a plasma TV and you'll hardly notice any difference. A minor complaint for installation, this and any other of the TRU-FLAT series of TVs they are putting out today are heavy with a capital "H", this baby weighs in at about 80 pounds. My mother got a 36 inch tv that was not TRU-FLAT, and it actually weighs less than this 24 inch one.

On the back, the tv has just about any hookup you could ever think of. I put my TV's through a lot of torture, long hours whether I'm there or not. In about a year of service now I've had zero problems with this set. If you don't have the four grand to spend on Plasma or HDTV yet, consider this the best place holder you can get till the price comes down on the high end wall monitors.

We also own the Sony top-of-the-line 36"XBR, and judge this 24" model to be equal in every way except size (and weight!). The KV-24FV300 is the best value in the entire Sony line-up.
The KV-20FV300 is identical but smaller, and slightly less expensive. But the 24FV300 is well worth the extra price for the added impact of the bigger picture and a larger, more dynamic soundstage.
I have rarely been so impressed with a product as I have throughout the year we had had this tv. Superb in everry way.

Very disappointed - sound is a disaster.......2003-08-10

Got it home, plugged it in, and turned it on. Wait, turn it up. Wait, adjust the Bass, Treble. Switch modes. Repeat. Could not get this thing to sound as if it was in the room. Always souded like it was in the next room, or in a tin can. Ok, I'm a musician and sound is very important to me, but I don't see how anyone would be happy with way this TV sounds. The 10w amp and the WOW mode add up to nothing. This TV sounds terrible. Don't be fooled by the "grilles" on the front...they're for show. The speakers are in the BACK of the TV. What?

Picture? Not too impressed with that either...way too contrasty for my taste, and the digital artifacts on edges caused by our digital cable service were all too present.

We bought this TV becase it seemed to be the best, you know, top-of-the-line. Well after a week of trying to get it to look and sound as good as my little 19" (with speakers on the front, mind you) we took it back.

Look elswhere for happyness in TV land.
