Talk about a walk down memory lane.......2004-01-29

This game card brings back the childhood days of Atari that's for sure, the gameplay is just how i remember it and tons of fun!
I'll be the one to verify this works with Pocket PC 2002 and works flawlessly with my Dell AXIM X5. the only problem with this game seems to be the controls. on the X5 it uses the middle curcular button for "navigation" which can be a bit sloppy at times, but all in all this is a great investment to pass the time on commutes and "spare" time during your day!

Great nostalgia piece for some of us.......2003-12-12

If you're 30+ years old, you may have fond memories of playing with the Atari 2600 -- the home video game system that was popular long before Nintendo, Sega, or even Microsoft were household words. This card takes seven of the games from that old system and puts them...well...in the Palm of your hand. This card is also supposed to work with Pocket PC and certain cell phones, but I've only played it on a Palm Zire 71.

The most important thing to note is what games are included -- the "Features" section of the listing on Amazon is incorrect. This card does have Asteroids, Breakout, Centipede, Missile Command, and Pong -- but instead of Combat and Tempest you get Adventure and Yar's Revenge. The Editorial Review includes the correct combination of games.

So what are the games like? As nearly as I can tell, they're identical to the old console version. In Adventure (one of my old favorites, and the grandparent of games like Legend of Zelda), the screen flickers if you have too many objects on the screen at once, just like it did on our television set years ago. Pong is...well...Pong. The games look, feel, and sound exactly like they used to years ago -- I'm not certain, but I suspect they're using the exact same code, running under an emulator.

It's important to note, however, that these are clones of the 2600 version of the games -- not the arcade versions that were out at the same time. So Centipede is just a square block, not a little mushroom shooter. Missile Command has one missile silo, not three. But unlike in the arcade, in this version of Asteroids you can choose to play with your choice of special options -- hypserspace, shields, flip, or nothing. If you're expecting clones of the arcade, you'll be disappointed -- the 2600 had nowhere near the power of the arcade games of its day, and that's reflected in what you'll see here.

I do have a few complaints about this implementation. You can only adjust the volume level before you start a game -- if you want to change it in the middle, you have to quit your game and start over. There is a pause option (as there was on the 2600 console), but if you end up back at the application launcher, you'll lose your place in whichever game you were playing. Two of the games included -- Pong and Breakout -- are almost impossible to play with a joystick (which is why the 2600 had paddle controllers for these games -- too bad they couldn't have let you use the stylus to simulate the paddle).

Speaking of controllers, there is no configuration option available -- your 5-way navigator is your joystick, but I've accidentally pressed it down when I didn't mean to, and fired at a bad time. Your four application buttons are also fire buttons, though they all do the same thing (the 2600 controller was a single joystick with a single button, so this is just fine). Still, I'd love the freedom to remap buttons if I want, if only to prevent a press on the 5-way navigator from firing unexpectedly.

CONCLUSION

If you grew up playing the Atari 2600, then this will be a trip down memory lane. I spent an hour playing Adventure -- I just couldn't put it down, despite pitiful graphics and simplistic gameplay. Nostalgia buffs will love this!

But if you're part of the Nintendo generation, or the old 2600 games hold no special memories for you, then you'll probably be disappointed in this release. Look for modern versions of some of these games from iambic and astraware to really take advantage of the horsepower of your modern platform.

Classic games.......2007-01-29

For $5, it makes a great stocking stuffer, if you had an Atari 2600 earlier in life.

nastalgic, but tricky to figure out.......2006-07-01

This game was fun for me as a 37 year old , but the fun was sucked up quickly by my 17 year old son who is spoiled by todays games. If you just want to relive a bit of the past it is worth the money. You have to have enough patience to figure out how to work the games. 5 on a scale of 10 for ease in learning .

WOW I didnt even know this existed I modified A 1 player model w two old atari paddles and soldering a 2pl jumper and soldering new paddles onto the paddle control The REAL ATARI

ALSO I read in the instructions for Atari FLASHBACK II YES YOU CAN USE retro ORIGINAL PADDLE CONTROLERS allowing you FOUR PLAYER break out or super break out and other paddle games to let you use 4 player option the paddle version only allows two players I havent learned weather the actual 2 player version lets you play 2 player pong I havent figured out weather they locked it out on mine yet But i think they did to entice me to buy the two player version EITHER WAY it makes a GREAT van kid toy for long family trips......

I don't know what the problem is with the guy below who gave this thing one star (defective unit?), as mine plays great! The paddles are smooth as silk, the games are as smooth as the real thing, and the arcade Warlords is perfect! Some of the sounds in the games are very, very slightly off, but who cares? If you are debating buying this thing, DO IT NOW!

BTW, I've had an Atari 2600 since 1979, if you're wondering where I'm coming from here...

Had it for awhile.......2007-03-23

Ive had this monitor for at least 3-4 years and its still running strong. I was looking for a newer one to replace it but I cant seem to find one that is much better.

I've always loved CRTs because of the resolution they support vs LCDs. I dont think I will ever switch.

KDS RETURN and REPAIR POLICY.......2006-02-11

I got a KDS [ still have it] 15 inch for my Birthday. It had flicker problems so I called KDS. KDS for 5.00 deposit on my CC sent me FIRST a brand new replacement FREE and I simply put the old one in their box and the frieght was prepaid and shipped it back. NO QUESTIONS ASKED and they soon returned my 5.00 deposit. You will never beat KDS Service.

Great picture, no longevity........2001-10-03

I have spent the last three days being frustrated by monitors because my KDS VS-19 blew (with smoke and everything) after just a few months of use. For about two weeks before it blew, it was having sync problems, jumping around a lot every few minutes, so I knew it was going to go.

Rather than try to send it in for repairs, I decided to go out and grab another budget 19" monitor, hopefully with a better lifespan. I've realized that I was actually quite spoiled by the image quality on the VS-19 -- compared to similarly-priced models from Futura and Envision (I've tried three of each in the last two days now), the picture quality of the KDS unit is spectacular.

The KDS had reasonably good geometry and convergence, excellent contrast/color fidelity and good pixel focus with minimal moire. It was a very nice image at high resolutions or high refresh rates. By comparison, the pictures on the Futura and Envision 19" monitors are truly HORRIBLE!

Unfortunately for KDS, their nice-picture product had a nice, short life span...

Great $ value.......2001-06-21

Both the KDS and AOC Shortneck monitors are a great value. The shortneck configuration takes up the spece of a 17" and the .25 dot pitch gives a great image. The controls are also easy to work with. One of the best 19" monitors for the money. Have installed and recommended about 15 of them with no complaints.

Great Price for a Great Camera.......2001-12-11

I got rid of my manual 35mm camera, and wanted a fully automatic 35mm, but didn't want to spend hundreds of dollars. This was the answer to my prayers. This camera is fully automatic, and has the features I wanted, such as Red-Eye Reduction, Date/Time stamp, remote control. It has a lot more features that I honestly have not used yet. I love taking pictures, so I am going to study up what those features are. The camera really comes through if you are in a dark place (like a reception), and you use 800 speed film. You can zoom across the room, and it's a great picture. Actually, this takes a beautiful picture in any setting (I typically use 400 film). I see they came out with 170 zoom, which I will buy in a couple of years. But for now, my Knoica's great!
