Customer Reviews:
This unit it HOT!.......2007-07-06
I run a few laptops during the day here for various reasons.
No problems except the laptop generates so much HEAT.
I called customer service this morning. They told me to change the bios settings to turn off the fan. Are you kidding me. The fan is the only thing keeping this computer from melting.
This is no joke. I can keep my coffee warm by keeping the mug next to the vent.
Be careful what you pay for. I would spend the extra $300 or so dollars the next time.
Averatec 6240 Running Linux and Windows........2007-01-08
The Averatec 6240 is a potentially nice laptop with 1280x800 screen, 4 USB ports, 64-bit AMD processor, and upgradable to 2GB of ram.
I've upgraded my laptop to the max 2GB, and it is very nice that way. I've also set up a dual-booted environment with Linux and Windows, so I will speak on that as well.
Firstly, the functionality -- I have a loose key on the keyboard and a single pixel out on the display. I have lived with both, as I don't fathom sending my workhorse out on an RMA. Pretty down on that. I need my hardware to just work and I don't have time to be without. The laptop runs hot -- the exhaust is on the right side where I generally have my hand operating the wireless mouse, and the exhaust is so hot it nearly burns my fingers!!!! I wish they had blown the air out elsewhere, but they can't really do that from the back because that entire area is taken up by the battery. Fan is noisy too. You can hear it constantly changing speed to handle the shifting cooling requirements.
Secondly, on the Linux side, I have Fedora Core 6 64-bit installed, and it is nice -- except you may find you have to hunt down and install the driver for its display (SiS M760), though I think it's covered OK in the FC6 release (I started out with FC4 on it and I did have to hunt down a driver at that time to handle the 1280x800 display mode). Also, the current driver does not support acceleration, so forget running Google Earth under Linux. Also, you will definitely need to hunt down the driver for the WiFi -- an RT2500 driver, which you will have to compile and install. WiFi works nicely under Linux, better, actually, than it does under Windows, at least at T-Mobile HotSpot points.
Thirdly, under Windows, it runs OK except when it overheats during game play, in which case the system simply shuts down. Some have suggested cleaning out the dust buildup, so I should try that. Also, the Windows CD it came with does not allow you to install Windows on a partitioned drive (which I need for dual booting) -- it wants to overwrite everything on the drive afresh, wiping out my Linux install. I had to get a "bootlegged" copy of Windows XP even though I paid for the Windows that came with the laptop. Which means, of course, I can't upgrade XP from Microsoft. I tried, and even though I had the original CD, they insisted that I reinstall Windows afresh, blowing away my dual-booting environment. They were rather nasty about it considering all I wanted to do was upgrade a single bloody driver. I know there's "Partition Magic" and other utilities that would probably allow me to install the crap that came with the laptop and restructure it, etc, but I really don't have time to muck around. My development is done under Linux and Windows is simply there to play games and to test sites with IE.
Overall, I like the laptop except for these nits. I can get my main work done with it, and I do have to live with the lack of video acceleration under Linux and the crappy WiFi under Windows. Aside from that, I would recommend this laptop for Linux users who have no need for graphics acceleration. The 1280x800 aspect ratio allows me to get two windows of code up side-by-side, and the 2GB ram and the 64-bit processor allows me to do serious software development.
ONE WORD ... HORRIBLE.......2005-12-15
Expect substandard customer service and support who treats the customers as if they should just accept the minor defects on a brand new laptop.
Dead dots on the screen are not acceptable but they say it is. The built in wireless is weak. These laptops get very hot, hotter than most laptops should be when running.
All in all, do not spend money on a laptop due to PRICE. You get what you pay for and this is another unknown company that will disappear as many other tech companies have in the past due to poor service and substandard products.
Good laptop, but -NO gaming and NO presentations!-.......2005-12-12
PROS:
Nice monitor
Pretty durable
Nice and light
3 DVDs on one charge is decent (video could be better but oh well)
Frickin' FAST! (Athlon 64 will blow you away)
Lots of drive space
Generous amounts of RAM
Great keyboard and touchpad with scrolls
Multimedia keys on the front
CONS:
WARNING!! IF YOU ARE BUYING THIS LAPTOP FOR PRESENTATIONS, LOOK ELSEWHERE. IF YOU CAN GET AN EXTERNAL MONITOR/S-VIDEO CONNECTION EVEN WORKING (TAKES A LOT OF MESSING WITH) THE ASPECT RATIO ON THE LAPTOP'S MONITOR WILL NEVER BE THE NATIVE RESOLUTION.
Forget gaming, the best game I could get to work was GTA: Vice City. Even old Half Life 1 games (Counter-strike, TFC) were unplayable. Anything with a 2d engine should be OK.
Overheating problems. My laptop was overheating so I sent it in to averatec to be repaired under warrenty. Unfortunatly, I had to pay for the shipping ($20). That was two months ago, it's been working fine but recently started overheating again. Apparently they use substandard thermal compound that can't handle the heat this thing puts out.
LOUD fan when running at 100% CPU
Gets very warm under wrists
Only 2 hours of battery life. They'll tell you 2.5-3 hours. Don't believe them.
Pretty bad wireless card. If you're close to the router you should be fine but it has a hard time picking up low strength signals when other cards do just fine.
Installed memory is 2x256 PC2700 333MHZ DDR. Expensive to upgrade, 1 GB of memory runs about $120 as opposed to DDR2 which is about $70.
Overall, if you plan on using one monitor, doing minimal gaming, and have the know how to take apart the laptop (voiding the warrenty), remove the heatsync, apply a better quality thermal compound and put the whole thing back together, this is the laptop for you.
My order was canceled.......2005-09-20
The computer was not in stock so my order was canceled, therefore I really do not have a review for this item.

Customer Reviews:
Nice and small - but ..........2000-10-08
This is a very small camera. But if you like first class pictures, this camera is probably not the best choice. In tele zoom mode the picture quality is ok. But in wide angle mode and especially with flash the corners of the pictures are gettig quite dark.
Practical and usefull camera !.......2000-06-21
My sister bought this camera and I've used it a lot, it's great to have your pictures with dates so you can organize your albums cronologically. Also, this APS system is perfect for those extra lerge photos in which you don't want to miss a bit. I recomend this camera, it's a great value from a good brand.
Great climbing camera.......2000-06-17
I got this camera because it's the lightest and smallest camera I could find with a zoom; a key for a climbing camera. It does not seem as rugged as some APS cameras and it doesn't have splash proof. I'm a little worried about dust and water but it's little size makes up for it. The zoom is an improvement over my last APS camera because it helps enlarge the size of the climbers on the rock. It fits in my shirt pocket with no problem and seconds as a nice travel camera. It takes decent picture in comparison to other APS cameras as well as all the other common features.

Customer Reviews:
Nice size. Audio so-so.......2007-08-12
I liked the fact I could replace battery instead of waiting for charge. Music was not so good sounding so I used for audiobooks only.
BUY SOMETHING BETTER.......2007-08-06
The headphones that come with this mp3 player have very poor sound quality. The buttons are very difficult to use and the volume blasts all the way up for no reason. It also drains batteries. I decided to buy an iPod and liked it a thousand times better.
Great deal for MP3 player.......2007-06-05
I picked this up on sale for $65 from Amazon. The player is tiny, but the face is large enough that even my fat fingers can hit all the buttons just fine.
I had a 2GB SD card from my digital camera that I wanted to load MP3s on to for this player and it worked just fine. I put the SD card in to my laptop and copied over almost 500 MP3 files to the card. Then I popped the card in to the player. It takes a minute to read through the directory listing of the card and then it started right up. I haven't used the included cable to hook the player up to the laptop since I had the SD card ready to go.
There are only 2 real issues with this model. First, it eats batteries like candy. Fortunately, it only takes one AAA battery and it's easy enough to keep a spare or two at my desk. In fact, this battery issue is the real reason I gave it only 4 stars instead of 5. Second, it comes with a clear plastic sleeve that the armband attaches to. The sleeve is just barely large enough to cover the unit so getting the sleeve on or off is a pain. The battery can be changed without removing the sleeve. However, the SD card might pop up during this process - at which point, it's easier to take the whole sleeve off.
There are a couple of minor issues with this model. If you want to skip a song with the FF button, it takes a good two seconds (or more) to skip ahead. Just a minor annoyance. Also, the menus are a little difficult to navigate. All the regular functions one would expect (all play, shuffle, equalizer, etc.) are in there - somewhere.
For the price, this is a great player. Amazon is running a special on 2GB SD cards (search for "SD card bulk") for ~ $12, which gives this player 2.5 GB of storage (about 630 MP3s) for under $80.
Great product for the price! (Paid $30).......2007-06-05
Having used this MP3 player for several weeks now, I have seen its pros and cons clearly. I bought this model because a) its is currently considered the older model = cheaper b) it is expandable with an SD card (up to 2 GB) and c) has some body too it, it isn't just one of those tiny matchbox sized ones with a 1cm screen. So far I am very happy with my purchase. The screen has the artist, album and track name on separate lines making it very easy to see. If you scroll through the menu screens you will have many options for customized playback, including a detailed equalizer, one of my favorite features. If you have an ear for music, when you get yours, set this and turn of the SRS WOW effect. For anyone that doesn't know how to set this up to your musical taste, play around with the WOW, FOCUS, TruBass and SRS 3D effects. One of these 5 options is guaranteed to fit your taste. The volume levels put out by this player is also sure to satisfy. Some mp3 players only go so loud or only so soft. This model covers both ends of the spectrum, you can keep the volume low enough to fall asleep to or loud enough to blast your favorite song and feel as though you are standing in front of the PA at the concert. On to the physical design; I love the fact that this mp3 player is easily held in my hand and all the major buttons (Play/Pause, Back, Skip, and Repeat) are all on the front. It makes it much easier to change through songs while driving in the car. With some of the smaller players, you have to maneuver it around in your fingertips till you get to the buttons on the side/bottom/top. My vote goes to this model for its design. With that covering the few pros that I can think of off the top of my head at 2:05 AM, now on to the short list of cons. My only real negative thought about this player is that is does not take folder/file structure into account. Simply put, it jumps around between artists because is plays songs by track listing I think. So, to combat this dilemma, I just hit the menu button on the side and "Play by Artist." This brings up a complete list of all the artists in the memory and allows the user to select a particular artist and it will play all the files by only that artist. This works fine for me because I upload entire cds on there, not just tracks. I'll wrap this up so I can get to bed soon by saying it's a great MP3 player for the money. The player is user friendly, it comes with a clear case, armband, and surprisingly very good sounding earbud headphones. Once purchased, I recommend turning off the SRS WOW and just setting the equalizer to match your preference (i.e. more bass, more vocals (mid-range), more high-end (treble). Also if you have a couple extra dollars, $19 to be exact, go out and get a 2GB SD Card. If you wait, I'm sure the price of the cards will continue to go down seeing as 2 years ago I spent $70 on a 128MB card and last month I spent the $19 on 2GB card. To anyone that has no idea what that means, 2GB = roughly 2,000MB, so 128MB vs. 2,000MB. Big difference in space. Long story short, this MP3 player easily matches the performance of more expensive mp3 players while saving you a small fortune. It is perfect for the car, gym, napping, boring lecture classes, etc. If you're reading this, hopefully you found this review helpful, if not, read it again or look elsewhere for more reviews. Good luck.
SanDisk Sansa e130 512 MB Digital Audio Player with SD Expansion Slot
Best iPod "knock-off".......2007-04-10
I purchased this unit for my wife on her birthday. She uses it constantly , we go through a lot of AAA batteries but its still more convenient than trying to replace the iPod battery. She has 80+ songs loaded and a few extra memory cards with approx 400 more songs that she carries with her, the entire set weighs about 6 ounces, with the extra cards. It has not caused any problem and she's had it for almost a year now. Great item , great price (I got it at a really low price- under $50)
