This is my second LaCie firewire drive, and it's a winner. I've used it for six months now, editing video stored on the drive in Final Cut Pro, and storing hundreds of other files on it.

The drive is a bit noisy, but I think most external drives are. The nice thing is that the drive sleeps when it's not in use, and the motor whine dies down at that time.

Excellent quality. Whisper-quiet. Case does not heat up. Easy to install and you can store your big files directly onto the drive from your computer without performing the partitioning for Windows, Mac and DOS platforms. The unit came to my lab with a pre-formatted MAC OS X. It's so efficient to work on multiple projects having a storage drive like this where you can work with the programs within the drive.

This drive is easy to use, but has high failure rate. We use about 40 LaCie Firewire drives year round and have about 10% failure rate. We recovered 100% data from more than 90% of the "dead" drives. It doesn't make any sense if LaCie told you that they can't recover the data. Let us know if you need help to recover the data.

As of right now, I am an Apple Student Developer

Most of my work comes from Filmmaking, as I'm an Independent Filmmaker, and all of my post production work relies heavily upon my Apple G5 Tower, as well as a TON of external harddrive storage

While some of my LaCie HD's have worked great, many of them have simply failed me

here are the pro's -

1. great interface - both FireWire 400 and 800, and they are easy to daisychain

2. they are fast - 7200 RPM, and usually, if the drive is good, the performance will show

CONS -

1. very weak body ---- forget if you drop this thing even one inch - it'll be dead

2. very tough to hookup to other drives -- when I say this, I mean it is impossible to stack this drive, or try and put it in a space where it'll stay put

THE BIGGEST PROBLEM ---

I don't know what accounts for this - whether its the bridge or the drive itself - but LaCie's drives fail way too much

I've probably purchased around 14 LaCie drives in the past 4 years, for varioius film projects and associate ones ----- of the 14, I have had 5 completely fail on me

This is simply unacceptable for any drive company

when you consider it all, companies like MAXTOR offer drives with the same interface, same speeds, but at a lower price

with that said, take a look at MAXTOR, whose drives are housed in a very indestructive body (...)
On a sidenote, LaCie has honored the warranties on their drives, and when they're open, their customer service is very helpful --- but I've lost too much data, at this point, to recommend them

I am a dedicated Apple user, but needed an external hard drive to store a backup of my hard drive as well as assorted digital video editing files.
After much research, I settled on this drive, also at the advice of a professor of mine, When it arrived, I opened it up, and plugged it in. Just like every other product I've ever used with my Mac, it worked right away without any setup.
As an added plus, a CD is included with the drive that includes a simple and effective backup utility, good for the average user who just needs a good backup of their data.
Overall, a very good purchase! I'd suggest this drive to anyone looking for a good external storage solution.

Beware....I have had my JDS256 for less than 2 months and it has stopped working totally for no reason....it wasn't dropped, it gave no warning and I have lost everything.

I am a computer professional and I wouldn't recommend this drive to anyone.

We found the jump drives fairly easy to use. Only concern is when it is time to disconnect--this may take a couple of times before the system will allow you to safely remove it.

Quality Drive - Poor Design.......2005-09-12

This drive has been great in storage capability and security. However, it has poor design for utility, since it is physically so wide. I have encountered several computers in which the USB port is next to a protusion in the case, or another device cable, so this drive will not fit without an extension cable. Who wants to have to carry an extension cable around?

Horrible Multi-Platform Support.......2005-08-25

I have yet to have this device work properly from one machine to the next. As long as you set it up on one OS platform (Windows 2000 for instance) and only use it on machines running that OS it's fine. But if you plug it into any other machine (Say Windows XP, or Mac OS) don't expect it to work right when you plug it back into Windows 2000. Lexar has been unable to explain this to me and has sent me 3 exchanged replacements. When it does work the secure section is a very nice and secure feature.

Great while it lasted..........2005-06-28

I got this as a Christmas present six months ago. I use it with ViceVersa to sync with folders on my work/home/laptops. The elimnation of floppies and CD-Roms was great. I say was because I dropped it a few days ago and none of my PC's will recognize that it's plugged in. The only other drawback that I can think of was that I had no control over what drive letter it grabbed. At work I use the 'G:' drive for some network access. Even though 'E:' was available, it insisted on mapping to 'G:'. At home and on most other devices, it used 'E:'. There was no Lexar support anywhere to help troubleshoot this issue. Otherwise, this was a good device. Just be careful!

I don't pretend to be a major audiophile. When purchasing a receiver, I wanted surround sound and excellent quality music and video playback. This piece is the cornerstone of my stereo set, which includes a TV, CD player, DVD, VCR, and a surround-sound setup. In making the decision to purchase this item, I listened to a couple of my favorite CDs on it (in a stereo store connected to speakers similar to mine), and the sound was clearly superior to other receivers in its price range, and most priced up to $300 more. The remote control and face of the set are easy to decipher, unlike many other systems that try to overwhelm you with useless buttons. My one complaint is that it is difficult to perform some functions (switching inputs, etc) because the face is very dark. They could improve this minor flaw with lighted buttons. I expect this to be part of my stereo system for many, many years.

I did a lot of research on MP3 players before I bought this one. until i started my research i never even heard of iRiver. even after all of the good reviews this mp3 player had received i was still a little hesitant. well i'm glad i got it. it plays great, it sounds great, it has a lot of built in features and the battery lasts A LONG time. i've actually only had to charge it twice since i got it because it charges as you upload songs to it. great concept by iRiver! i use it when i do my cardio and i use it in conjunction with the Belkin tape adapter so i can listen to it in my car for long road trips. i can fit around 20 albums on this thing. it's very easy to use and very easy to set up. no problems with it so far and i've been using it for almost 2 months now.

the ONLY bad thing is the arm band is WAY too small. it doesn't even come close to going around my arm. either buy another one if you need it or use it as a wrist band.

i recommend this mp3 player altho i'm sure it's discontinued but any other upgrade from this mp3 player has got to be worth the price.

The Hyundai of music..........2005-08-02

Economical, compact, does the job. Holds about 240 songs. sound is good blah blah blah. It's a bit clumsy to program and use, and I feel there are too many features for alphabetizing the play list to not be one of them. The protective case and the arm band are great if you're a Backstreet Boy in '97.

Here's what I would've like to have known (don't know if these are common to all players or not):
1.) you cannot tranfer songs from the iriver to anything (so that dream of merging your home and work musical experiences will still rely on more conventional methods.
2.) you'd better import your playlist pre-alphabetized (this is difficult when sorting through the plethora and determining which songs are worth the precious real estate in your iriver)
3.) if you're electronically inclined you will not need to carry around the users manual with you.
4.) this player may do all the things I'm complaining about and I'm just lacking the tenacity to get through the users manual.

Maybe my expectations were a bit high for the price. I have to say it's a good buy for noise though I'm not sure I would do it again, I think I'd probably spring for a higher priced, better known brand with more memory...240 songs get tired real fast. If you're going to drive a Hyundai drive a Hyundai, not a Hyundai that's ripped off from a Jaguar.
