IBM / Lenovo ThinkPads are the most venerable and reliable notebook computers available to the US consumer, a good combination of performance and excessive amount of configuration options combined with sturdiness and reliability rarely matched by others.

Combined with responsive technical support that listens to your description and answers your questions.

The T41 and rest of the T4 series ( T42, T43 ) are no longer in production, the T41 was manufactured by IBM by Japanese suppliers and before and during the transition of IBM's PC unit to Chinese based Lenovo.

The first thing you notice about any ThinkPad is the feel of the exterior, it feels sturdy like the first time you get behind the wheel of a BMW. This is the result of an inner endoskeleton made of lightweight but strong magnesium alloy. Many laptops are exoskeletal, meaning the motherboard, hard drive, CD and other components are attached to the outer shell. The disadvantage is if the exterior becomes flexed in any way it can stress or crack the internal circuitry. An endoskeletal design in the ThinkPads means if the unit becomes flexed it likely won't flex the internal circuit boards, the amount of flexing required to bend a ThinkPad would have to be extremely routine and unlikely to occur.

This basic endoskeletal design allows IBM to use plastic for the outer casing, at first this may seem alarming but is really crucial when compared to other notebooks of metal exoskeletons, metal conducts heat and modern laptops with their fast multi core CPU's generate inordinate amounts of heat, this heat can turn the bottom of othyer notebook computers into a hot plate and scorch whatever part of your body you're foolish enough to rest it on. This effectively turns your "laptop" into a "keep it at least 24 inches away hotlamp".

ThinkPad technical support is based in Atlanta, GA instead of India or the Phillipines, domestic tech support isn't necessarily a guarantee of quality but when compared to the lesser quality of foreign based tech support often utilized by Dell or HP/Compaq the difference becomes readily apparent.

When you require a new component, the basic 1 year warranty is often fulfilled next day if the component is user replacable or they will furnish you a prepaid express mailer to their depot center. This assumes you ever need an IBM ThinkPad repaired to defective workmanship because they're just built well, IBM doesn't use substandard internal components like Dell ( Dell often buys parts that would fail HP or IBM's quality control standards , there is a reason they're so cheap ).

Extreme modularity, removable optical drives and removable Hard drives makes expansion and repair superbly easy, many notebooks can't remove both their hard drive and optical drive without voiding the warranty, this IBM feature makes it the travelers friend if you're out of town and need to replace a part on the road. There is a huge secondary market of new and used ThinkPad parts in every major city, consider the fact IBM hasn't changed the power supply connector for the ThinkPad in over 9 years, that means a ThinkPad 600e Power Supply from 1996 will fit your T41 made 7 years after so you can keep working.

The keyboard is large enough but not so large it makes the computer too big, the depth of key travel is excellent and it just feels like a real keyboard. The keyboard depth hasn't been changed in over a decade, every ThinkPad types as well as the oldest one.

There are some drawbacks to a ThinkPad, when comparing specification by spec to a Gateway or HP you'll pay more for IBM / Lenovo, the screens aren't the brightest.. .they are bright and clear and rarely afflicted by dead pixels but aren't as bright as an AlienWare or Gateway Solo. The LCD is finished with a matte protector instead of gloss, this helps reduce glare and makes it easier to clean. Gloss covered screens are vulnerable to scratches no matter what kind of wiping cloth is used.

Don't take my word for it, visit a store that sells contemporary ThinkPads and test the keyboard, the weight and screen clarity because the same quality in a modern ThinkPad existed in this older system you're reading about, this is why more major and small corporations choose ThinkPad as their notebook.

Not a bad little camera.......2004-02-06

This isn't a bad camera for taking simple pictures outside or inside. I have made many great pictures with it without wasting film from a regular camera. The drawbacks are 1) if you use the flash the pictures comes out almost completely washed out and if it's dark so that you need a flash, you ain't gonna get the picture you want; 2) there's no LCD display so you don't know what your picture looks like until you get home to download it on the computer; 3) you can't tell how much memory is left to know how many more pictures you can take before downloading. I got this camera as a gift. I have no idea what it cost.

I have been using this little camera (also free with a PC purchase) and have had 0 problems with it. Obviously, it's a 1.3MP camera, so what kind of quality do you think you're getting? For a novice digital camera person taking non-action shots, this is fine. I have been very pleasantly surprised at the quality of outdoor shots (indoor shots turn out okay, but close-ups are poor quality - don't use that feature, a button on the side). The size is one of the best features of it - it's tiny! I can take 30 pics at a time, and since I always have a laptop close by, so downloading these and clearing the cache is no problem for me. The software installs really easily, and the interface is very user-friendly. It takes AAA batteries which is great. There's no viewer, but this is still a good value unit. [I would say it's easily worth about $50-$60]

Don't waste your time.......2003-11-24

I received this free with a PC purchase. The pictures it takes are so bad even my 8 year old daughter is embarassed to email them out. I'm currently trying to think of someone I dislike enough to give it to.

Good for beginners.......2004-07-24

Before purchasing the "QuickCam® Messenger 2-pack" I was using the more expensive "QuickCam® Pro 4000". Until my dog chewed the wire.

Alone one of these web cams sells for 50 dollars, while the "QuickCam® Pro 4000" sell for twice that much, 100 dollars. The price reflects the quality.

CONS
Unlike the "QuickCam® Pro 4000" this is not USB 2.0 compatible. If your computer doesn't support USB 2.0 then this isn't a big deal.

It doesn't have a shutter (lens cover) for privacy. Meaning if you didn't want someone watching you on it, you have to turn it away from you. This might not seem like such a hard thing, but once you've gotten used to using a lens cover, you'll see how unprofessional turning away is.

Unlike the "QuickCam® Pro 4000" or other web cams, it doesn't have a swivel base. In fact the base comes unassembled and is composed of a large triangle shape of rubber. What's this mean? If you at all want to change the angle of the camera, you have to use both hands to (forcefully) rotate the plastic prong along the rubber slit. Even then it wasn't high enough to reach my face. I had to prop it up on a CD case for it to be the right height.

Also unlike the "QuickCam® Pro 4000" it doesn't have an "on" or "off" light. You won't know when it's on or off. This meaning if for some reason someone gained access to your computer without you knowing (i.e. a hacker) they can watch you on your webcam without you knowing (lack of on or off light) and you can't cover the lens with a privacy cover.

Lastly, the straw that breaks the camels back: picture quality. While the frame rate is adequate, the pictures are very "pixilated" and even grainy. Almost as if Logitech purposly added poor video quality as a feature. For those who are used to better quality web cams, this is a major disappointment.

Also, after installing the software, I pressed the "take a picture" button on the top of the webcam only to have it instantly restart my computer. It seems if you at all try to take a picture with it outside its mandatory software (either physically pressing the picture button or clicking it on the Windows[R] webcam feature) it either restarts your computer or "glitches" up so horribly you're forced to restart. Not even logging out resets it. At least this is what happens to me. I use Windows XP Professional, and have tried several times even after reformatting my hard disk drive.

But if you use the software to take pictures it does work.

CONCLUSION
All in all, I suggest you spend an extra 20 dollars and get fives times a better camera (in my opinion). Get the "QuickCam® Pro 4000" which comes with photograph-like quality picture, a lens cover, swivel turn, working "picture" button, on and off indicator light, and a mike.

If you are strapped for cash and want to get you and a friend a web cam, go for it. Just expect less quality, and zero added features outside the mike.
