Lost money on this one .......2006-06-20

I bought this BenQ product and have used it for only few months. It was working good and all of a sudden it started not recognising the discs. I found this is a very unreliable product and there is not too much of help also is offered.

It is always a pain to go behind the warranty or return these. I gave up on small companies like this and bought an NEC one. It is not worth the save of money.

I've had this burner since last April. I havent used this drive since November and today it suddenly died on me. This is the second drive I've gotten from Amazon, both which came with the seal broken. I dont know if Amazon was recycling returned drives back into market, but both of mine came with broken seals. If Benq replaces it since it still under warrenty, I'm Ebaying this thing and going with the NEC drive.

Review for DW1640 -- the next one after the 1620.......2006-01-05

Drive died after 2 months of use. I called Benq and waited on hold for 30 mins, got hold of a rep, who cheerfully tells me these drives "die all the time". They refused to ship me a replacement until I send out the old one.

I shipped it out and 3 weeks now, no word from Benq. So I call them again (waited again for 30 mins, no kidding) and it turns out their warehouse was closed for 3 weeks during Christmas. So they haven't even opened the package! This is the first I've heard of a business that stayed closed for this long ignoring their customers.

I asked for a refund and they don't do that so I'm stuck waiting for a drive that may die again 2 months down the road.

I've have a NEC drive that has worked just fine for over a year of daily burning. I'm going to eBay the Benq drive whenever I get it back and get a NEC or Plextor instead.

PLEASE STAY AWAY FROM BENQ!

This burner is junk. It burns single-layer (4.7 GB) disks fine but every dual-layer disk (8.5 GB) fails, creating a lot of expensive coasters.

Work a couple time.......2006-01-21

I bought this DVD burner a few weeks ago. Used nero to burn CD/DVDs.

After 12 DVDs it stopped burning, giving the same failure error message. "Session Fixation Error". It then opens up with a now ruined DVD. A quick Google search revealed that I wasn't the only one with a BenQ1620 with this error. I used BenQ's support email form and still have not heard back. I upgraded the firmware, cleaned the lens, no luck. When any dvd is loaded now, it will only read it half the time. It still burns CDs, and reads data cds and audio cds.
Not reccomended unless you like wasting time and turning blank DVDs into trash.

When it works, it works great!.......2007-01-29

I bought this adapter years ago...probably 1998, from Farallon. I use it to connect my HP 6MP laser printer, which has local talk, to my network. The only problem is that the PCs on the network can't see it. But all the Macs can see it fine and print to it. But if I have to disconnect it temporarily to rearrange furniture, or the power goes out, I have to luck into the magic sequence to get it going again. I don't think it's broken, it just is not forgiving of being disconnected. Can you still buy this item? I'm not sure....but if you have a localtalk printer then by all means, try this out. Seems to me I paid $50 for it year ago, so $75 seems a bit steep.

Smart Media cards as fragile as they say? Truth or Fiction?.......2007-07-14

Short of saying that Smart Media Cards are indestructible, they are pretty hardy and can take quite a bit of abuse. I don't know where all this talk about how fragile they are, they are not fragile. They can take just about all the abuse you can throw at it. How do I know? I use to work at a Computer store (nope not tellin) and to keep the cards from being stolen kept them in my pocket. My pocket was full of change and with keys, and these Smartmedia cards full of my fingerprints. When we needed to demo them, we'd yank them out of our pockets and stick them in a camera or photo printer to demo these products for sale. I don't know who started this rumor that the cards are fragile but I've dropped them on the floor and tossed them around without a second thought as to proper care. They definitely are not flimsy although those skinny things would have you believe that and this is just the bottom line truth. And I believe they are the same with SD cards, compactflash cards and the whole lot of them which is to give all the credit to the engineering and quality of these memory card products. I've owned my 8mb, 32mb and 64mb since 2001 and still treat them without any due respect. They are an outdated media now and are getting to be very expensive because of their scarceness. Damn, there had to be a drawback!

This is the largest size of SmartMedia card that I've been able to find and they don't seem to make them anymore. If you have a digital camera that only uses SmartMedia, this is a good buy. Works great, no problems after 2 years of use.

I bought this for an HP 735 digital camera. I popped it in, and turned the camera on. DONE!!! No muss, no fuss, no formatting or anything. I've been using it a lot for several weeks. There have not been any glitches of any sort. Write speed seems "about right" compared to other SD cards I've used. Don't know what more to say. It works fine.
