Last summer we decide to buy a stereo system. We're in our 50s and wanted something convenient with a small footprint and a great sound. It came down to either this or the Bose and I'm glad we chose the Boston Acoustics. I heard a lot of the Bose since friends had it. To hear the Boston Acoustics I went to a high end stereo shop, and it sounded better than the Bose, but I knew the acoustics in the store were superb so it wasn't a fair comparison. I was convinced, and remain convinced, that the sound is equal, if not better. The ultimate selling point was the fact that the Boston Acoustic has controls on top in addition to the remote control--the Bose requires the remote control. I'm so glad we went that way. When we moved in the Fall, we put the unit by the stairs in our new place and it is so easy just to reach over and turn it off when I go upstairs to bed. I hadn't figured on that when I bought it, but am glad for the convenience now.
I've had no problems whatsoever with the CD unit. I play store-bought as well as MP3s that I've made from my computer. Nothing has ever gone wrong musically or mechanically.
The other reviews here are good, but I noticed no one has written recently. I feel certain that the Boston Acoustic folks have fixed whatever problem they might have had with the CD.

I purchased the Boston Acoustics system in July 2005, and it worked fine until March 2006 when the display quit working. Fortunately, the warranty was still valid, so I returned it, receiving a new unit. Aside from minor problems with the display, this unit worked fine until November 2006, when I became familiar with the e-4 code. (I look e-4 up in the owner's manual hoping for helpful advice and find that I have a jammed CD. Well, I already had that figured out.) Sometimes the unit takes CDs, sometimes it doesn't. When it takes a CD, sometimes the unit ejects the CD, sometimes it doesn't. I've found tweezers to be quite helpful in these situations. The radio has consistently worked fine, however. My experience, then, is similar to that of other reviewers. When it is working properly, the Boston Acoustics system is a fine product. Unfortunately, it doesn't always work properly. Was this product rushed to market? I've owned Boston Acoustics speakers over the years, and they have always worked fine, but I'm going to be hesitant about purchasing additional Boston Acoustics products.
Get rough........2006-08-11
I got a used unit at Amazon. At first it spit out cd's and displayed e-4 [disc jam]. Then I loaded a cd and smacked it on the top left side. It worked then and is working now. I've had a Bose for about 10 years and it still has an amazing sound for a small unit, this Boston Acoustics sounds better. EZ to hookup and use.

I own a BA Recepter radio, love it for clean sound and superior tuner sensitivity (pulls in FM from 50 miles away), wanted to play CDs from a table unit, so went to BA CD Microsystem despite Reviews that warned of CD unreliability. First unit from J&R would not play CDs, ejected them with Error E-4. Called BA, who confirmed unit as defective. J&R replaced quickly at no cost. Second unit took in CD, gave out Error E-4 and would not eject the CD. No more for me; I just bought a Tivoli/Kloss instead...
Big wow, but there are issues........2005-12-27
This was to be a christmas present to my wife. She had been bugging me for years to get a new clock radio. $500 is an awful lot for a clock radio. I looked at the Bose, Cambridge and the Boston Acoustics. I actually purchased the Cambridge system and brought it back after reading about problems with it. It came down to Bose or Boston. I went with the Boston system. We now take you to christmas morning. My wife unraps the gift, opens the box and immediatly plugs it in. She turns on the radio and we are both floored. The sound eminating from this unit is unbelievable. Deep, full and clear. The smile on my wifes face made this purchase worth it. However, in a matter of seconds that smile changed to a frown. She wants to play one of her new cd's. She loads it in the player and low and behold it spits it back out. Problems with the cd player. The next day I brought it back to Tweeter. They gave me another one. I felt I had better try it there to see if it worked ok. Guess what, that cd player also did not work on that unit. Is it my imagination or do you suppose we have a quality control problem? The manager insisted they bring yet another one out of stock and try it. Third time is the charm. It all worked this time and the cd sounded awsome. At least for the moment, we are both very happy. I guess only time will tell. I give this 5 stars for the sound, and 3 stars for quality control. I'd say that equals out to about 4 stars overall.

Talk About "Planned Obsolescence".......2007-09-20
Looks like LaCie has perfected the concept of "planned obsolescence" with this hard drive. I'm apparently just another in the long line of disappointed consumers whose LaCie drives failed for no reason just after the warranty expired. My only hope is that enough reviews like this will prevent another misguided soul from purchasing these drives and ultimately losing important data.
When it first failed to mount (out of the blue), I did a little research to see if anyone had a similar experience and knew how to "resurrect" it. It lights up and you can hear what sounds like a disc spinning up to some extent inside the case, but nothing has gotten it to work again. I am truly amazed at how many people had the same or similar experience with various LaCie drives failing at random. None of the earnest tips I read ever worked, and now it's literally become a "book-end" on my side table.
I was using it to store data as I was migrating from an old computer to a different one. It died before I got to transfer most of the files.
Be glad that you read this and similar reviews - Do yourself a favor and don't buy this product. Be sure to always read reviews before parting with a good chunk of your hard earned cash.
Still going strong after 2 years.......2007-07-12
I purchased one of these drives in March 2005, to use for backups of my PowerBook and as a place to hold my iMac's iTunes library. I later supplemented it with the smaller LaCie Porsche 250 gig drive, mainly because I needed two firewire ports (this drive only comes with one). It has continued to serve as a backup drive for my external iTunes library and as a boot drive after the hard drive failed on an eMac I was using. All in all, it's been a solid, reliable drive that has given me no problems in the 2+ years that I've used it.
Uh it's an external hard drive..........2007-02-27
So I was reading quite a few of the bad reviews. The only commonality I found is that almost every incident where something happened (other than total failure) was completely caused by the owners. I have owned a LaCie 250GB hard drive for about two years. I have probably been rougher with it than I should have and use it constantly because I edit film and sound on a regular basis. The fact that you can link them together is extremely attractive because you can easily expand your storage based on your needs. It has worked flawlessly regardless of my abuse and I will be happily buying two more soon. Also, it's a no brainer that the drive will be formated for Mac OSX or Windows, unless you partision the hard drive. I love the review where the owner is aggrivated about not being able to use it on his Dell after using it on his Mac. LaCie is an industry standard as far as I am concerned and you need to be willing to aknowledge the risk of saving files on an external device whether it is a RAID or a CD, the brand has nothing to do with it.
DO NOT BUY THIS ITEM.......2006-06-10
This device has worked superbely for almost a year now, it was fast, had a lot of storage and looked up. Unfortunately however one large problem cropped up. It stopped. I can no longer access the drive and I have no idea what was wrong with it. It was almost full of data and I fear I have lost all 230GB of it. It will take months to regain what I have lost. Despite how desirable it looks surely reliability must be the formost priority. DO NOT BUY THIS ITEM!
All data lost, can't trust this drive .......2006-01-29
Used the drive for a couple of months. Yesterday, all data where lost. My PC did see the drive and that was all: Disk space: 0 bytes, etc. couldn't access the drive anymore. There was only one solution: re-format the drive.
I've read other comments from peaople encountering the same problem. I still don't know (like the others) what went wrong: very disappointing.
Now I have a drive, just a few moths old, which I'cant trust.
