Bad Brother.......2007-09-13

This unit is practically new,purchased from Brothermall May 4,2007. Arrived making a very loud squeaking noise which ran us crazy.They were great and sent down a new drum and toner assembly.When the toner ran out this week I ordered another at $99 from Brothermall. When their new toner would not fit their new drum I called and was informed that I would have to buy a new drum at $188.99 since the one they sent in May was out of 90 day warranty !!! So...to get this almost new $160 printer running I need to spend $99 + $188.99 , a total of $448 in 6 months !!! Beware of this company.

An affordable solution for home or office.......2007-08-15

I needed a laser monochrome printer for work and decided to try this printer out. I researched many printers, including the "professional" models from Ricoh/Lanier and Xerox. I have since ordered 8 of these Brothers and been very satisfied with them overall.

PROS:

1. Speed - At 30 PPM, this printer is very fast. To get the equivalent speed from the high end printers, I would have to spend at least $800. From the time I hit the print button to the time my paper is printer is about 7 seconds (assuming it is warmed up). Once it gets started it takes about 2 seconds to print subsequent pages.
2. Cost - This printer is very inexpensive compared to other printers. Also, the toner and drum unit are only slightly cheaper than the cost of the printer. Whenever I need to replace the toner and drum, I actually just order a brand new printer, since it comes with them and is only a few dollars more!
3. Reliabaility - I own eight of these printers and some of them print as much as three reams a day, and none have failed in the last two years. Although two of them that print the most have gotten significantly louder and something is not right, but they still print just fine. I did order one that was "recertified" that arrived dead on arrival though.
4. Toner cost - The cost of the toner comes out to around $0.01 per page if you order the Brother TN580 (7,000 YLD) High Yield Toner Cartridge, which I highly recommend since it is more cost-effective. This is cheaper or equivalent to some of the name brand workstation printers from the larger companies. A high yield toner cartridge will last 7,000 copies and a drum unit about 20,000. I have manually checked this and found it to be fairly accurate.

CONS:

1. Loud - This is definitely the loudest printers we have in the office. Not enough to bother me personally, but several employees have complained about it, and I probably would not print anything and make a phone call at the same time.
2. Envelopes - This printer WILL wrinkle envelopes. It is not just certain printers, but a design flaw. Every single printer we have wrinkles envelopes, regardless of what you do or try. It is not enough to bother me, but I would not use it to print return envelopes I was using for a wedding or invitation. This is a fairly significant problem with this printer in my opinion.
3. Print quality - This isn't a huge con, but the quality is not as good as a professional workstation printer will be. It is fine for legal and medical documents, but I wouldn't use this printer to create a document I was presenting to a client or to print photographs. It is fine for simple text, e-mail, etc.

Overall, the cost and speed of this printer make it great for small and medium sized businesses that do a lot of printing. However, for anyone thinking about getting it, I would strongly recommend the Brother HL-5250DN Network Ready Laser Printer with Duplex over it. It is 2ppm slower, but it adds network capability and doubles the memory to 32Mb, and is only slightly more expensive "if you shop around." For people that won't be printing very much, I would recommend the Brother HL-2070N Network Monochrome Laser Printer (Black)

This printer continues to randomly crease the paper down the center. Have not figured out why or what causes this.

Printer is fine when it works...have now had 3 occasions where the paper light comes on...troubleshooting says to open all doors, etc & remove paper...well, there's no paper to be found.

With the 133 MHz Fujitsu SPARClite processor and 16 MB of internal memory (upgradeable to 144 MB), the HL-5140 is able to handle medium to large print jobs. Manual duplexing allows you to print double-sided documents. A 250-sheet standard input tray is accompanied by a single-sheet manual bypass tray and a 150-sheet output tray. An optional 250-sheet tray is also supported. The printer accepts a wide variety of paper types, including plain paper, envelopes, bond, transparencies, labels, and card stock. Great cost-effective personal printer but............2007-08-27

Great cost-effective personal printer if you need to use it only lightly. If you need a heavy use machine (i.e., personal office, etc.) this printer is not the way to go. Paper has bad habit of jamming when it prints large batches and what is worse is that, many times, one needs to take the whole machine apart to fix the problem!!!

GOOD RELIABLE PRINTER.......2007-01-04

This is my second HL 5140. I bought the first for my dental office and it worked well. Quality and reliability is good. I've just bought another one for my second office. Very happy with performance. Overall a good value and replacement toner is also reasonable.

I've used Brother products for several years. This is my latest acquisition. I've printed about 3000 pages (just replaced the original toner cartridge). For an economical printer it is nothing short of super. As some of the other reviewers have mentioned, there may be a problem with paper curling. Changing to a better quality paper solved the problem for me.

I previously had a Samsung Laser that was dirt cheap and quite small. A piece on a paper tray broke off and it could not be fixed, so that meant that it would detect that no paper was in the tray!

I purchased this and plugged it in and it worked on the first try. I run a small business and this is what I use. I don't print out a ton of documents, maybe 15-20 sheets a day.

I've never had any driver issues. I've had maybe one or two printer jams and in over a year and a half that's not that bad. They were with some generic labels.

This thing is fast and quite. It's very reliable and nothing really fancy. I was actually very surprised when I heard all the negative reviews on this print!

Decent personal black and white laser printer.......2006-09-20

Print quality and print speed seem very good for a relatively low-priced black and white laser printer.

My biggest complaint is that this printer sucks a lot of power when initially powering up to print. I have it connected through a surge protector with battery backup, although it is in the "surge protection only" plug of the protector. Every time I print the surge protector thinks the power is going out and briefly kicks into battery backup mode (it makes a beep). Other people in my office experience the same problem with this printer. One person reported noticable dimming of their lights when starting to print.

Don't buy early.......2007-08-26

We have bought a number of replacement cartridges for our Brother 8850DN through Amazon. This one though prints very light right out of the box. Unfortunately, Since I ordered it to have on hand when our other cartridge failed, it was more than 30 days since I ordered it. Only 50% refund and I would have to be without a cartridge. I'll buy locally from now on because it is a business critical item.

Excellent Value.......2002-07-11

This product is an excellent value for numerous reasons.

One - the CD player package includes decent headphones, a tape deck interface, a cigarette lighter charger, a removable belt clip and an AC adapter. If you were going to shop for each of these accessories separately - you would spend significantly more overall.

Two - It offers good audio quality with a flexible three stage digital boost for the bass range. I appreciate the option to boost the bass during a hard workout but reduce it for casual listening.

Three - The unit appears more durable than other similiar units I have owned. It is partially metal and has the battery case on the inside of the unit.

Four stars because it's not perfect, but I'd buy it again easily.

I bought this player because of my previous positive experiences with Philips and the fact that it simply had more features for the money than other comparably priced models. When you buy a Sony player, you're paying for a brand name. When it comes to cd players, Philips simply provides more quality. My first player was given to me in sixth grade and I kept it until 10th because it had no problems whatsoever. I was really sad to see it go because it just worked so well, but I knew I had to replace it with another Philips model. Like my first player, this one refuses to skip even without the ESP on. The extra features are there too, including shuffle, resume, hold, and two levels of bass boost. Similarly priced Sony models just don't have those features.

The outside design is a classy amber/purple. It's difficult to describe, but the purple looks amber-ish in the sunlight, and ranges from black to brown (and of course purple) other environments. The only fault of the outward design lies in the cd player's tendency to pop open if brushed along the opening mechanism. If you're careful of that and don't mind resetting the bass each time you start it up, then you should love this player.

I GOT THIS CD PLAYER FOR CHRISTMAS AND I WAS HESITANT ABOUT OPENING BECASUE I THOUGHT IT WOULDnt BE GOOD FOR SOME REASON, WELL I WAS RIGHT! IT IS A GOOD CD PLAYER WHEN LISTENING TO SOFY MUSIC BUT WHEN LISTENING TO DRUMS AND LOUD MUSIC (WHICH IS PRETTY MUCH WHAT I LISTEN TO) IT SOUNDS VERY BAD! AVOID THIS PRODUCT!

The resume feature is a must have which is nice on here, that's where the player starts exactly where you left off, but it resets the skip and bass features every time you turn it back on which is annoying if you're driving or working and take brakes etc.

A player worthy of price...........2001-06-07

I purchased this CD Player full and well knowning Philips' good past and I was not disappointed. When combined with Philips folding closed-ear headphones, they provide loud, crystal clear sound with little or no distortion or fuzzing. The battery life holds fairly on par with Sony's, but as far as I'm concerned the Sony players can not even begin to compete with Philips.

Some other things: Battery are placed inside of player. Extremely tough: I've dropped this thing nearly 20 times while at work from about a distance of 3-5 feet and nothing even remotely stops it.

The only real cons are that the LCD screen is slighty hard to read.
