My luck?.......2007-07-26
Bought it last night. Tested in DVD-movie mode, DVD-files mode, USB mode and Network (wireless mode, for DVD files on hard drive along with other media files). Hook-up: video to HD TV via component, set to 1080i mode, audio - with coax digital cable to a digital receiver. Network -- via wireless to Netgear Router. Using Buffalo server software downloaded from their site (vs Microsoft Media Server) on 1 PC (DualCore2 P, 2 GB RAM). Ok, all set, let's try this puppy.
1. Photos/pictures -- perfect. I especially liked the concept of setting music for each album (directory, actually). So, set up family pics and associated that with Rammstein. Don't ask me why. But it worked nicely.
2. Movies: msFormat, VOB files from ripped DVDs, divX (3 - 6), vidX, mpeg, dat. -- all go. If your content has multiple subtitles or audio tracks, just press the "audio" button or "subtitle" button, don't look for a menu in divX movie. And yes, it supports divX 5 - 6 multi audio tracks. Perfect. Mean it. DVD files -- no difference with original DVD, well it is one, for the better: when you play DVDs, it switches to 480 resolution (do to some legal issue about up-conversion, mentioned in manual). Good news: if you play same VOB files from your Hard Drive, then up-conversion works perfect. HD DivX -- fantastic. All from wireless, no problems found.
3. Music: CD -- check, Mp3s (all rates) -- check, linking particular album with slideShow from same drive -- check, DTS CD -- wow, check. Lossless -- check.
4. Internet Radio -- not checked, don't need it.
Friends of mine have D-Lincs and NetGear HD players. They all are jealous now.
The only draw back (that they didn't see) is that it took me 1.5 hours to set it up "right".

Pros:
-Cheap hi-def wireless/wired media player.
-When used with a Buffalo router supporting AOSS, setup is a snap.
-Looks nice.
Cons:
-Highest level of network security supported by this device is WEP128, which is a joke. Do not plan on using your other wireless devices with any level of serious security unless you are running this on its own, separate wireless network. Even then, you're still not very safe from snoopers.
-Someone else mentioned that movies over the network randomly fast forward; I experienced this several times in the two days before I returned the device.
-The interface is horrible. Could not navigate through menus while a song was playing, setting up playlists is a chore, the buttons on the remote and corresponding menus/buttons on screen are far from intuitive.
-Files take quite some time to load, and slideshow is slow. I'm sure if I spent several more hours attempting to navigate through the convoluted interface I might have been able to figure out a way to customize the slideshow, but this device was supposed to make my life easier, not more difficult!
Works as advertised.......2007-02-28
I bought Linktheater last week. I have been reasonable happy with the device. i have connected it through my hard wired router. I have no problems playing MPEG and WMV files. I have not been able to play AVI files.
The device has trouble playing WMA flies from a large library.I found I need to point the software to individual albums to access music files.
My main goal for this unit is to play video files from my hard drives. I find the device work well when playing files through the connection with my PC. The unit does not recognize hard drive formated NTSF unless you play files through PC. Hard drives must be formated FAT32 to take advantage of the direct USB connection.
Over all I am happy with the device but I can see room for improvement in future models.
Be Careful with iTunes.......2007-02-11
A word of caution to all who think this will work with iTunes. It won't. Buffalo had no answer for me, and had no plans to resolve the problem. I'm running the PC Link Server Application on my computer with iTunes version 7. I've even tried running this application with other computers in my home, and it refuses to work with iTunes' protected AAC format. As far as pictures and videos go, it works great. Pictures appear in full screen, and crystal clear. If you want both the pictures and video with the ability to handle iTunes music, go with the AppleTV.

After searching for a media player that would be able to stream my backed up video files, I finally came across the LinkTheater. Everything on the box sounded good as it had everything I wanted such as MP3 playback, intergration with iTunes, JPEG support and most importantly MPEG4 and VOB support. Coupled with the fact that it can do 1080i, has optical audio out and a built in DVD player, I thougt I had finally found the perfect solution for my media center.
Since my house is wired, I wasn't worried about wireless performance which some people have complained about. My first task when I setup the unit was to try out the ability to play VOB files. I hooked it up to my 32" LCD and set the it to output in 1080i. I tried installing the software on a Win2K3 server but apparently the software doesn't work on that platform. Oh well, no big deal as I have a drive mounted on my WinXP station. After installing the software and pointing the video portion to my shared network drive, I was anxious to fire up my first video. At this point, I shouted some words out of frustation that luckily my daughter didn't hear. How can this unit not support chapters and menus?? What's that all about? I was so close to finding the perfect solution that I could taste it. This unit only recognizes individual files which means that you cannot navigate a backed up DVD. Major disappointment!!!!!! Video look great though but I need menus and chapter. Guess I'll look for another solution.

In the lightweight category this rates high about 8, while the 2 Minolta cameras rate a 7(xtsi andQtsi)>I was told to buy the best body affordable and when I saw this refurbished model for less than the other 2(above)--amazon and Minolta stand behind it least for6 months. Maxxum 5 is on the horizon it includes depth of view preview which others do not it is lighter and upgrade in some areas to compete with cannon 2000, likeHTis plus does also. Buy it or wait for Maxxum 5(12ounces)

This is a very cheaply manufactured vcr, and although it boasts S-VHS/ET recording capability, mine could not record anything right out of the box. In addition, the manual is far too skimpy to help with any sort of troubleshooting. I returned mine.
Plain unit, short on the details.......2002-06-25
Easy setup, although you have to be patient during the auto mode. Universal remote was not so universal. It had a short list of supported TV's. JVC's answer was to try all the codes and hope for the best. The unit construction was not impressive. If you are using the unit with a cable box, the AUTO clock feature can not be used and the manual setup does not appear to have a battery back-up, which could lead to frustration with power interuptions. Picture quality is good, about the same as the Toshiba SVHS unit I purchased eight years ago.

Poor Quality, Poor Performance.......2007-06-12
I purchased this phone at Sam's Club about 1 year ago for full retail price at the time. I hate it. The sound quality is really poor. It constantly tells me that I am using the wrong batteries even though they are the factory batteries that came with the unit. There is no option to turn the ringer off on the base - so if you select a personalized ring tone you hear the ring tone AND the base ringtone(which cannot be changed or turned off). The outgoing message for the answering machine cannot be turned off or muted either, so everytime we receive a call we all have to listen to my outgoing message, and it will slowly drive you nuts. The buttons are awkward and pretty cheap and cheesy. I'm going back to a motorola as soon as I can justify spending another $100+ bucks on a phone. Another downer, we've tried carrying the phone across the street when we are visiting our neighbors outside (maybe 40ft away) and there is no reception, 5.8GHzs my @%%. It's a piece...
Good phones but poor quality.......2006-03-29
I recently bought the i5866 DSS Expandable Cordless Phone with Digital Answering System and six handsets. I have a 5 level split level home with only one servicable phone jack. I also run a standard G Wireless Lan in the home. The router for the lan is in the basement and the phone is situated on the next floor up.
I don't really know if the router was the cause of the problem but all but one of the phones (located on every level of the house) transmitted garbled speech. The sound coming in to the phones was fine, but no-one could understand what we were saying back. Also one of the phones would not recharge it's batteries. I returned the lot.
Excellent Sound, Good Overall Phone for the Price........2006-01-07
I am no expert on cordless phones, but I have owned my share of different brands over a 15 year period of time. I owned a vtech long ago and did not like the sound quality back then. This new phone sounds great and has a few cool features you should keep in mind: First, you can record your own ringtone from any sound source(my kids love that), but the playback ring is not as loud as I would want it. Second, you can communicate between handsets(I like that), and lastly, you can transfer calls from one handset to the other. All the other features are cosmetic and minor, but cool if you are into those things. I honestly don't know what people expect from a phone of this price, sure the Panasonic phones are probably better for range, but I think most people don't go too far from home with a cordless home phone. I'd say the best thing about the phone are the type of batteries it takes. I can't see buying a cordless phone battery for $2o and having the thing not hold a charge because someone but it back on the base before its time. NiCad batteries are a thing of the past and this baby comes with AA Nickel Metal Hydride rechargeables that can be purchased anywhere and recharged many times and replaced with this most common format in batteries. Even the base has a recharger for spare batteries. Good Phone for a good price!

I don't want to start a big argument here, but despite what Mr Rusty H. Hodge said previously, the VTech i5866 phone does apparently operate at both 2.4GHz and 5.8 Ghz, AT THE SAME TIME. The handset transmits on 2.4 GHz and receives on 5.8 GHz. The base unit is just the opposite. You'll find this info on page 44 of the owner's manual, which you can download from Amazon or VTech.
Over a year - no complaints.......2005-11-23
We're a six person household so the phones get a workout. We've been through several phone systems and like this one best. Its been a joy for the past year with narry a glitch.
Base station is fairly compact and handsome but notably easy to use. The 5.8 spectrum does not interfere with cell phones, or my Linksys Wireless G network. Its always clear as a bell. Best answering machine I have ever had. Records and playsback perfecty.
The handsets are great, easy to use, easy to navigate. Would be a neat trick if the memory synchronized between the handsets so you didn't need to enter phone books more than once. Also would be neat if handset could access the answering machine which is controlled directly from the base system.
Reason I am writing this review is because I came back to order another handset. All in all this is the finest home system I have had. (I did a review on the ATT 954, a thumbs down. But I have busted or dusted my share of Panasonic, Radio Shack, and Uniden over the years.)
