I have the 250 GB LaCie firewire drive. It worked on my iBook for a while and then one partition at a time would not mount, and now it sounds like there is gravel inside and will not mount at all. I can't wait to see what the data recovery will cost on this 3 month old hard drive. I hope you have better luck than I did.

Think twice about buying any Lacie - They are JUNK........2006-04-09

Take a look at the reviews for other Lacie external hard drive before buying. They are notorious for poor quality and short lives - not desirable characteristics in a drive. My first firewire Lacie looked good, but was defective straight out of the box. The unit woulld not mount. Lacie "fixed" it under warranty, but the "repaired" drive worked for only about 2 hours before itself failing.

The unit now won't even show/mount as a drive on my Mac so that I can attempt to repair it and it is out of warranty. This unit was powered up no more than 30 times and had fewer than 2 hours in run lifetime.

Two units, two failures. That is a 100% failure rate. One immediate. One after two hours of use. Check out the reviews for all the Lacie external hard drives - this is not an uncommon occurrence and many reviewers indicate that Lacie will not repair units out of warranty - Lacie obliges you to buy a new one. I, like many others, will never buy Lacie again.

Great Backup Drive.......2006-03-11

I needed an external drive with a firewire connection in that my computer does not have a USB 2 port, and USB 1.1 is painfully slow in backing up data.

I backed up my entire system after reformatting the drive
to NTFS in just seven minutes. So far it's reliable and fast. I do turn it off when not in use.

Would not hesitate to buy another if the need should arise.

Conflicted Opinion.......2006-09-12

Well, to be honest, I love this stereo's sound. I don't live in a big room, but I just love that even when the bass is all the way up and the volume is moderately high, it's not muffled or distorted. All of the other stereos I've heard do that. To me, clarity is just as important as the bass.

HOWEVER

I've had this stereo since September of 2003, and in the past two years it's really started to go downhill and I have no idea why. It only plays about 40% of the cds I put in it and hardly ever plays burned albums anymore. It skips alot and seems to get confused very often.

Obviously this is very frustrating. Does anyone else who owns this know what I can do?

I listened to this great-looking system in Best Buy one day. UGH, it sounded like horse ****. The highs and mids (or highs and semi-highs) blow. The bass is moderate, but no good for a setup that elaborate-looking. The mxgt80 still reigns supreme.

My System.......2004-09-16

This system is amazing, not only are the speakers extremely well built, but the bass is exceptionally powerful. I live in a dorm room at college and if you want to knock stuff off the shelves in your RA's room down the hall with the bass, then this is one of the systems to go with. Although I have found that with my laptop output set all the way up, the system will not pass about volume 22 without starting to get major degridation in the sound quality. If you want a nice loud, powerful stereo for cheap, this is the way to go, to add some extra mid to hi range sound, I suggest buying a pair of 130watt minimum cheap speakers, such as car speakers and hookinh them in, because sometimes in songs with alot of bass, you loose alot of mid-range and hi-frequency sound. Other than that I love my system, my roommate hates it. And my RA tells me to turn it up cause he can't hear the music, just the bass.

I spent $... on this same stereo at a local [store]. I've had it four months and the speakers are blown. I'm NEVER home. I used it maybe 3X's a week. Never excessively loud. Since it's part of the Giga Tube series you cannot just replace them with regular speakers. What's even better is when JVC customer service won't return calls or email. If your looking for a ...paper weight, go for it.

This system is great. i love it! it has lots of bass that will shake your windows. (if you think they have thump now.....wait till the speakers break in!)Your ears and head will be ringing after you hear the bass. the music is clear and crisp. highs and mids are performed perfectly. The GigaTube and the two 8 inch Subwoofers pump out plenty of low,deep,thundering bass!
