Pretty Good Monitor.......2004-12-28

This is a nice monitor and is made sweeter by the rebate deals that may be available to you.

If I were to caution on one point, it would be that you not get too mesmerized by the 12ms published response rate statistic when comparing this monitor with others. Yes, response rate is a hugely important statistic to check out when buying for use with games or video playback, but when shopping around, I found games were equally playable on some monitors where the published response rate was 16ms and in some cases even higher. At the same time, I found that the contrast on this monitor sometimes suffered when compared to playing video on the same other monitors.

I nice monitor for the price point, just don't buy it over another one simply for the "12ms" quoted. Look at the whole picture. I like this one though.

There are better scopes.......2007-01-07

This is not really the best way to get started in astronomy.

To their credit, the marketer has avoided the ridiculous magnification claims that plague so many similarly sized scopes on the market.

Also to their credit, the marketer has provided a reflex "red dot" finder in place of the useless 5x24 finders that plague so many similar scopes.

Even so, what you can expect to see in a scope of this size is rather limited. Some star clusters will be visible, but galaxies and nebulae will be very dim. You can see about as much with a pair of 10x50 binoculars.

In a way, it is hard to fault Orion for marketing this scope. Their upper-tier instruments are quite good, but the big money appears to be made on low-end scopes like this. In one sense the sale of these scopes subsidizes their good models.

Understand that using an astronomical telescope is not like playing an MP3 file and but rather like playing a guitar. It is a learned skill. You must do a lot of homework before you buy a telescope. Buying without prior experience is like buying a car without knowing anything about driving. If you want to see the wonders of the sky, contact your local astronomy club and attend one of their star parties. The members love sharing their hobby and can set you straight as to how to get started. The best way is to learn the sky with the unaided eye and 10x50 binoculars (decent ones are available on Amazon), then graduate to something along the lines of a 150-200mm (6-8") Dobsonian; good ones can be found on Amazon starting under $290.

This LaCie 80 gigabyte external hard drive plugs into any computer with a USB2 plug and comes with Linux Mandriva installed. It's a small, 3 inch by 5.1 inch box that is roughly an inch in height and weighs less than one pound. But it transfers data at 480 MBPS. A nifty little item if you want to take a Mandriva Linux desktop system with you, and can plug into another computer when you're away.

Of course, you can also skip the drive with a pre-installed Mandriva system, and just buy a LaCie 80 gigabyte external HD, download the Mandriva programs for free, install them on the external drive yourself and run it off your own computer as a removable back up system or as your carry-all desktop for when you travel. It's cheaper the second way.

Not just for graphics.......2007-05-25

After developing RSI from using a mouse, a week of the Wacom tablet relieved the pain in my arms (combine this with a Nautral Keyboard and you'll be all set). The natural position of your hand and arm will help immensely.
I also spend hours and hours on the computer designing websites and editing images, the ease of use of the stylus (and mouse very rarely) makes this process bearable.
Larger tablets aren't always necessary for everyone and I've used a 4x5 for about 10 years now with no problems.
This is a seriously great product (and cross-platform as well...)

Legal size thoughts on a post-it size pad.......2006-03-06

First off I will say this is a good product that I never use. I bought the Graphire2 a few years and ago and I used it for the mouse funtion but never liked the pen. The tablet is great but small. I always felt like I was writting on a credit card machine at Sears. Bottom line if you need a tablet go big and screw the extra cost, trust me it will be worth it.

Sweet Pen! Needs some getting use to.......2003-07-19

I believe I got my money's worth with the pen. It was easy to install, put the cd in then plug in the tablet and your done. Only thing kind of annoying is differece betwwen an ordinary mouse and the pen. It hard to explain but if you get You'll know what I mean. Right now I still getting used to it but I've only had it for a couple of hours. Its pretty easy to draw with, its like using a pencil write with one end and erase with the other but this only works in photoshop. However is does it automatically without any changes made. Another good feature is using it to web browse.

My Favorite new Tool!.......2003-07-01

I bought my Graphire a few days ago and I'm absolutely in love with it! Don't make the mistake of thinking that 4x5 inches is too small - it's not at all. I'm a graphic designer by profession and also do hours worth of high-res photo/illustration work in Photoshop every day, and this little baby keeps right up.

Big Enough? Yes........2003-06-19

I was worried that this cheaper, more mass-market tablet would be too small. But alas! I use it on my home computer mainly with photoshop and it is perfect. Now I would be afriad that the bigger models wouldn't fit so nicely next to my keyboard like the Graphire2. I love it, especially for such a great price.

I own the Wacom Graphire2 4x5 in the silver color. The Bronze color sounds very cool while the silver matched my 1" thick Titanium Powerbook (Mac) perfectly!. The price was right-on for a transportable option to the little square "mouse" on my powerbook and the teeny tiny red button on my friend's PC laptop.

No matter what platform you are on, as long as you have USB connection this product will fit in your case as you transport.

I am a computer graphics pro and art director and use this tablet with my portable mac, plus at my workstation with 23" monitor. I love the versatility of the pressure-sensitive pen in Photoshop & Painter software. The cordless mouse option is a MUST when I am giving presentations.

I have used a drawing tablet for years, by another company. Now that I have OSX on my computer that tablet is virtually useless, unless I boot in OS9. I was not planning on buying a tablet until I saw the price on this one. Unbeatable!

good smooth tablet.......2003-01-14

My sole purpose of owning a graphic tablet has been in order to make some of my own graphics for the small web firm I run. I'll normally hire a graphics person because, ultimately they can do a better job than myself. But for the quick drawing of a neat, unique little control button or to make a sketch from an existing gif or jpeg, this is it. I tried the AIPTEK HyperPen pad thinking that it would be the same quality for a cheaper price. It seems though to be a cheaper quality pad as well. I've looked for reviews that compare Wacom with AIPTEK but have found none. Here's my 2 cents worth. Where the Wacom was smooth in drawing the lines that I wanted, the AIPTEK was jittery and would absolutly not produce a good smooth line. Although the Graphire2 doesn't offer pressure sensitivity I've found it to be quite versitile. The 4x5 size is comfortable on my desk and certainly useable for modest projects. I succumbed to the temptation of buying the AIPTEK 8000 which has a larger area of 8x6 and prices similarly to the Wacom Graphire2(4x5). Don't go that direction, the extra size does not make up for the loss of quality and control found with the cheaper version. The pro's seem to go with Wacom now I see why.
Only downside with Wacom and it's not that bad: Wacom claims that the cover sheet on its pad allows you to trace photos right on the pad and onto your screen. This doesn't work. Their support staff even told me to avoid this and just scan the pictures in and then use a new layer as a tracing paper(ie, as in photoshop)

This is one of the best graphics tablets around. It has loads of FREE software costing over [$$$]! You can't beat the price on this one either. They supply a mouse, but most people say the pen's easier anyway. (I agree.) If you're thinking about buying it, buy it! Great for beginners, great for pros, great for the price!

Software Works With XP.......2002-05-08

I had an old serial Wacom Pen Partners table, and decided to get this tablet primarily because it had a USB connector. The tablet itself is same as the Pen Partners table, and also includes the plastic overlay so you can trace small paper drawings.

The pen holder is detachable if you don't care to have it attached to the tablet. The included mouse is a basic cordless mouse, but you can use your "normal" mouse without disconnecting/reconnecting anything. The Wacom "control panel" allows you to change both mouse and pen settings such as mapping speed, tablet positioning, finger wheel properties, eraser feel, double-click and pop-up menu settings.

The tablet comes with two CD's. One CD is for the tablet drivers and the "control panel". Included drivers are Windows 98, ME, 2000, XP drivers and OS 8.5, 9 drivers. I installed the tablet on XP which was truly pain free. The other CD includes Photoshop LE and Painter Classic.

The only thing I did not like about the package is that it does not come with any additional nibs (the plastic piece that makes contact with the drawing pad). ...Other than that the tablet is excellent.

I just got this and have been playing with it all day and it is great. I was worried because I thought that it might be a little small for my needs, but that is not the case. Unless you are going to trace really big items, you can just reposition your pen when you do larger things. Best for the price
