bug with the phase knob.......2003-04-22
Cambridge Soundworks did a lot of things that I like with this subwoofer. I like the idea of a separate control unit with a remote, which I imagine digitizes the signal so a cheap phone cable can carry the signal far away without hum or loss. I like that there's an equalizer. I like the looks of the box, and the size is quite reasonable.
After bringing one home, I hooked it up to speaker level inputs, and noticed an odd phenomenon: the sound changed dramatically at one point on the phase dial, around 160degrees. I believe that below 160 degrees, the crossover filter wasn't working correctly, above 160, it was. I tried line level inputs and noticed the exact opposite: above 160 degrees, the bass was a much higher frequency. The piece I was using to test this is Strauss's Also Sprach Zarathustra (i.e., the 2001 fanfare), which has a low frequency pedal note basically throughout the piece. (I think my CD has this pedal note as two frequencies an octave apart.) I went back to the store and tried this same piece on their P500 and P1000. Both did the same thing, so it's not just my box; it's an inherent bug. This sudden difference for a small change in the phase knob disturbed me.
I figured I could deal with this issue as long as it sounded good. I brought home an open box Energy e:XL-S12 to compare. The Energy has a bigger woofer and is ported, so I figured it would be sloppier than the P500. I put on a Bach fugue and did the comparison. Sixteenth notes in the pedals are very hard for organ pipes to do well, nevermind speakers, but after comparing a section, I noticed a difference, and asked my wife who "isn't discriminating" (her words) to listen. After listening to just a few seconds immediately said, "This one [the Energy] sounds way better, huh?" yup. The big, ported subwoofer somehow is more accurate. The P500 never hits any of the notes, and just compromises with some mud in the middle. The Energy makes a valiant attempt (although not quite matching the more pricey Velodyne SPL800).
The Energy is also slightly louder, and clearly goes lower in frequency (despite a not-so-disparate spec).
I hope Cambridge Soundworks fixes their bug in the phase knob. I hope they add a light to the volume knob so you can see its setting when controlling it with the remote. I hope they figure out why their bass isn't as tight as a big bass reflex box. I hope they can make that satellite module smaller so it doesn't take up the space of a audio component. When they fix all of that, I'll want one badly.
Until then, it's an okay performance sub, in a small, attractive package, but other subs (like Energy) have better performance at the price.
Awesome bass, and a beauty too.......2002-11-07
I bought this sub for my husband, because I was sick and tired of the huge black box that sat next to our couch. It was an eyesore. I own some of the Cambridge computer speakers and was really impressed with their sound for the money, so I gave this a try. Now we both have what we want. My husband gets a great sounding subwoofer that shakes our walls during fly by scenes of Top Gun, and I get a good looking sub that doesn't make our living room look like am electronics yard sale. My husband especially loves the remote on the subwoofer. Great idea- and adds a cool factor that he shows off to his buddies.
Customer Reviews:
Subwoofer with style.......2002-11-08
Most subwoofers I've heard just thud along. The Cambridge P500 is really musical, with a clarity I normally don't hear from a woofer. It's small. It looks very cool. And I love the remote control. I don't have to crawl around on all fours to change the bass level. I prefer it to several [more expensive] subwoofers I listened to.
Super Subwoofer.......2002-11-08
I've used powered subwoofers in my audio systems for 10 years. Some good, some not so good. The P500 is GREAT. The crossover allows precison adjustment to complement both my speakers and the room. ( I only have a stereo system so I use the P500 for music rather than to watch movies.)The speakers I currently use are much more efficient than most and until I discovered the P500 I was having problems matching them to a subwoofer.
Customer Reviews:
Good but needs some work.......2006-12-15
I have owned this subwoofer for about a year and a half now. While it is attractive looking and often produces satisfying output, it still has its fair share of problems.
Overall, I can generally get this sub to blend well with my mains and surround speakers (I use MC300's for L/R/C and S300's for surrounds. These are also produced by Cambridge Soundworks and I can recommend these, especially the MC300's.) However, switching between my 3 main sources of audio (DVDs and Television, CDs, and finally multi-channel SACD) requires constant tweaking. Fortunately, it's relatively easy to do with the P500's separate control module as well as a remote control for the volume. It is quite capable of putting out powerful bass that will shake the floor when you need it.
Now for the bad.
First of all, I'm not sure if it's due to the size of the 8" drivers, but this sub often has trouble outputting bass that is focused in the lower frequencies. The bass simply comes out as a dull thud that is very displeasing to the ears (this is true for both pair of woofers I have used - more on that later). This usually requires turning the volume below desired levels or changing the equilizer frequency on the control module to a higher frequency. You can also get stronger output by placing this sub in a corner (just keep it at least a foot away from the wall or it can get boomy).
Second, the exterior of the sub simply does not hold up. I have only used the Slate model, so I do not know if there is a similar problem with the other finishes, but after using the sub for about 6 months, I noticed numerous cracks forming in the corners of the subwoofer's casing as well as along the middle of the surfaces. After being told to send it in for service, and then sending it in (paying the shipping charges of course) I eventually received the unit back exactly the way that I sent it in. They did however notify me that they had replaced the woofers in the unit. Speaking to someone in their service department informed me that they don't service exterior problems with the subs (useful information prior to sending it in), and they didn't seem overly concerned with helping me out.
This has been a long review, but for a reason. While this is a good subwoofer, I can't recommend it to everyone. It definitely requires some configuration and tweaking, and there are several gotchas. You will need to be willing to put some time and patience into it, and if you're not willing to do that then you should try out other brands first. Also, the cracking can be an issue as well, especially if you might be planning on reselling the unit in the future.
3 out of 5.

How many pictures will it store?.......2004-11-06
How many pictures will it store? It is the most commonly asked question from digital camera enthusiast but usually the question that is the most difficult to get a straight answer about. Well, considering I worked in the memory industry for over 7 years I can help clarify this perplexing question and do so unbiased as I have since changed industries.
The Lexar Media 256MB Secure Digital Card 32X HHS, like most 256MB cards, will store on average 284 pictures when used with a 2 megapixel camera, 213 images when used with a 3 megapixel camera, 128 pictures when used with a 4 megapixel camera, 102 images when used with a 5 megapixel camera, and 80 pictures when used with a 6 megapixel camera. These numbers are based off the assumption that you are going to shoot your images at the highest quality JPEG setting available for the camera and understand that they are estimates and may be off by as much as 10 percent due to numerous factors including the complexity of the scene being shot and the compression algorithm used by your specific camera.
I truly hope this review was helpful to you in determining whether this card is the right capacity for your specific needs.

Customer Reviews:
Very reliable so far........2006-02-25
I bought this product about a month ago. so far so good. I use that hard drive almost everyday, several hours a day, download music, movie clip, and so on. It has been mentioned several times on this board that this thing sometimes overheat, noisy. I don't feel mine has overheat problem at all. About the noisy, I do feel a bit more than I expected, but it could be just normal.
I am glad to have this one, will think about buying another one in the near future, as I just realize 80G is a little bit short. I will update my review a few months later. Good luck to all.
Lasted 3 months.......2006-01-21
I bought this drive for backups. Worked great first couple of weeks; backups performing automatically as expected. Then errors started cropping up: drive not formatted for windows - reboot would clear....then it just stopped registerring as existing altogether. It just sits on my desk; I don't move it around. Pretty disapointing product. I see the reviews are mixed here, but they're generally bad everywhere else. I completely regret the purchase.
Okay Hard Drive but does not work with Laptop.......2006-01-03
Initially after getting this Lacie 80Gb Hard Drive, I was very impressed with it, using it in my office and home desktop to backup data and carrying data back and forth.
Then on a trip, I tried to connect it to a Dell Inspiron 600m Laptop and was shocked to see that I was getting a power surge error from windows and the Hard Drive refused to work. This prompted me to write the review and warn other potencial buyers about this problem.
Reliable.......2005-11-15
I bought this drive as a portable backup mechanism after major computer problems caused a Dell meltdown in 2004. The unit has worked fine for me on a Linux Mandriva system, protecting and backing up all my documents. It provides a great backup solution.
Just turn on the unit, and it is up and running on my system. It is completely removable and can be stored in another location for safe keeping.
Died After 2 Months.......2005-10-26
I am very disappointed with this drive. It worked great for the first two weeks. After that, it started disconnecting for no reason. Annoying, but not a major problem. Rebooting the drive or the computer (Dell w/XP) solved the problem. Until today. Now the drive is dead in the water. I've tried several times to bring it back without any luck. If I can't figure out something I'll be out a hundred bucks and all my backup files! I strongly suggest avoiding this drive if you care at all about the data you'll be storing on it.

I recently bought one of these JVC units from Goodguys.com. Over the past ten years, I have owned several boomboxes and micro systems from Pillips, Sony, and Aiwa. This JVC sounds better than all of them. It also has many features and is quite flexible. For $90 you can't go wrong here.
