With all the attention Canon's Digital Elph series has been receiving, it's easy to forget that the first Elph models were film cameras. This latest-generation model has much in common with its predecessors, including a chrome-and-aluminum body, diminutive dimensions, and use of the Advanced Photo System (APS) format.

Refinements for this model include a longer, lower shape--less like a deck of cards and more like a cell phone--and a backlit status LCD that emits a cool blue glow at the push of a button. Several other features were revised to improve photo quality, including a redesigned lens and a newly developed passive autofocus system. Additional features include a 2.3x zoom, spot metering, self-timer, and a five-mode flash with red-eye reduction.

A lithium CR123A battery provides power, and the camera uses APS film, a format jointly developed by five leading photo companies in 1996. The APS format is designed to take advantage of a number of technological advances developed in the decades since the introduction of 35mm film. Here are the main advantages to the APS format:

Size and convenience: An APS cartridge is smaller than 35mm, and the film is completely enclosed, which simplifies film loading.
Midroll rewind: Many cameras let you switch film midroll, allowing you to shoot in both color and black and white. Each roll has an indicator on top that lets you know if the film inside is unused, partially exposed, totally exposed, or developed. After developing, the negatives remain inside the cartridge for protection and long-term storage.
Three print sizes: Most APS cameras let you choose from three proportions for your prints--"classic," which is a 3:2 ratio like 35mm; "HDTV," which is a 16:9 wide-screen format, and "panoramic," which is a long 3:1 print.
Magnetic information storage: The film is coated with a magnetic layer much like a videotape. This layer can store information from the camera that can be used during developing and printing to make the best possible prints. This also means that photo time and date information can be printed on the back of each picture instead of the front.

The two biggest drawbacks to the format are size and availability. The negative is approximately half the size of 35mm, so each photo has less detail than an equivalent 35mm negative. This can result in pictures that look grainy, especially when enlarged. Though the format is popular, it's still relatively new, so the film can be harder to find than 35mm film and developing may be slightly more expensive.

I love this camera because it offers three different picture sizes and has the zoom lense. It is the second one I have owned. The only problem I have with it is putting in the date. A friend always has to do this for me.

Great Camera.......2006-06-27

People dont realize its not just the camera that takes good pictures, but how the person uses the camera. I bought this camera in 2002 and i still have it. It takes great pictures. I took pictures of weddings and parties and the picture came out great. People loved the pictures. Cameras do break so you do have to be careful how you load the film. The only bad thing about the camera is you have to push the button down for a second, then release it and it takes a moment to take the picture so this camera is not good when taking pictures of small children. APS film does have a disadvantage versus the 35 mm on the quality of the picture when you enlarge, but the advantage is you can get 3 different sizes which is good when you what to get a scene. Its very compact and it comes with a case.

I have had this camera for a few months now and while taking pictures it all of a sudden, it froze on me and now it is useless. I probably will have to pay more for fixing it than it is worth. I would definitely invest in a different camera.

Problem with film loading compartment!.......2004-12-24

I received this camera as a gift in June 2003 and used it maybe 10 times over the course of a year. Then all of a sudden the "EASY" APS loading dock started to get very fussy. After about a month of playing to get the film loaded, the camera stoppped letting the film out of the compartment! It's broke and I can't get it working! I took it to the Camera Shop and they said it would cost $110.00 to fix it! Forget it! I'm going back to 35MM - the film is cheaper and it cost a lot less to get developed. How much easier was the APS after all?

Not worth the money.......2004-09-15

Just as everyone else stated, this is a great compact, cool looking camera. Pictures have turned out okay. Some were blurry but I suspect it may be the lighting. Outdoor pics were clear as the sky. However, I have a lot of problem with loading and unloading the film. Sometimes the camera would keep rolling sounding like it would load the film but when it stops making noise the cartridge symbol blinks asking you to put in the film. And when it finally loads correctly and finishes rewinding the film, the door gets stuck and would not open. It's quite frustrating. I'm going to get a refund and I suggest not getting this camera at all especially for this price. You should probably go with their digital elph camera instead.

I'm very happy with this drive. My only complaint is that I had to search online for the reason why it wouldn't work out of the box with my iBook. I ended up having to download a fix from the LaCie site, which got everything working.

Love this DVD writer. Biggest bang for your buck. Picked it up on special at Amazon for 83.59. One of the fastest dual layer external writers I have seen. 16X for single layer, took about 7-8 minutes to burn approx 4.6GB of data backup.
LaCie is one of the better-known brands in the league of Pioneer (original champion of DVD writer) and HP.

This model not only supports DVD-R/RW but also +R/RW, not to mention dual layer for both -R and +R.

Recommended to couple of my friends and they too are very pleased with its performance.

I purchased mine about 5 months ago and it has been a very handy addition to my tech room.

The Picture in Picture (PIP) works great, and I have a security camera hooked up to the AV input. So now I can sit in my office, work or watch TV and also have the PIP of my front door.

The monitor is very configurable with preset brightness settings or fine tuning available. Decent built in sound is nice, and the size and footprint are just right.

Perfect for student room, maybe a little expensive.........2005-02-05

I was hoping to buy a new PC for college, and since monitors are optional, there is a wide variety of available models. But specifically I wanted something with TV-tuner so I can use same screen for both PC and TV, saving a considerable amount of space Since I also own a laptop (and all I have is a 4 to 2 ft workspace) this fit perfect. I used CRT moniters till I bought this, and after using 192MP for 5 months, the old 17" CRT back home disturbed me a lot. Also has speakers, but I also plug iPod in when I'm playing CS or some other game. I also use PiP (Picture in Picture) a lot, and that was also satisfactory. Even though you can only have two sizes (box and wide) and place it to 4 specific locations around the corners, you get used to it. Expecting more would be too optimistic..

One thing is price. It's probably 200 dollars more than its nearest competitor without a TV-Tuner, and I bet you can buy 4-5 TV's to that price. Also I paid more since I bought it a long time ago. But I can say that if you can afford it, then this product will worth every penny.

Great, very flexible monitor.......2005-01-23

This is a single device that allows selection of composite, component (progressive DVD and HD sources), PC monitor and broadcast (cable TV) video at a push of a remote control button. Basically it was necessary only to plug in the sources and up they came.

It offers a number of color adjustment and other setup options but in a month or so of usage in all modes I have felt little need to diverge much from the default settings.

Its slim size and weight are a great relief from the bulk of CRT monitors.

Looks Great.......2004-12-14

This monitor looks great. Easy to set up. At first I had it hooked up to my VGA video card and it looked good. Then I bought a DVI video card, hooked that up and it looks even better! The only drawback is it only looks this good at it's native 1280x1024 resolution, which makes pictures on web pages look small as compared to the 800x600 I was used too. If you plan on hooking up S-Video there is only one port for that on the side which will look tacky. If you need a space saving monitor and TV, this is the deal for you.

An Excellent Monitor.......2004-11-03

I just purchased a Samsung SyncMaster 192MP as an upgrade for my current computer, a Dell circa 2001. I was upgrading form a ViewSonic 17" CRT, circa 1996. I love it. I should add that I have only owned it a few days and have no current plans to use it as a TV or with its built-in sound, so I cannot attest to reliability, usefulness as a TV, or the sound quality. My current video adapter has only the standard VGA 15-pin analog "D" output, so I have not had a chance to see what things look like with DVI. I run at the native resolution of 1280x1024 at 72 Hz.

The verdict (so far): The monitor is very bright. The colors are clean. The image is sharp. I have noticed no dead pixels. I do not play really fast video games, but I have noticed no issues with latency or ghosting in normal use. It is true that any LCD would be better than my old CRT, but I have had both a Dell 19" LCD (don't remember the model) and an HP L1925 LCD at work. Both of these are also nice. I have not done a side-by-side comparison, but the picture from the Samsung 192MP is at least as good as the L1925 and probably a bit better than the Dell.

The 192MP worked correctly right out of the box, although I was careful to make sure I had set my display adapter to run in a compatible mode ahead of time. The only bad thing I have to say about this monitor is that after trying the auto-adjust feature some of the text became fuzzy. However, when I went back to the default "custom" settings, everything was perfect.

I did a fair bit of research on 19" displays before I bought this one. I also considered the Samsung SyncMaster 910T very seriously. I did not get a chance to see a 910T live, but on paper it is a slightly better monitor, although it lacks the TV tuner and speakers. The 910T is significantly cheaper, however. If you just want a monitor, the 910T is probably a better choice. For me, the ability to hook it up directly to a DVD player was worth the extra money, since I pan to upgrade my computer in about two years, and I will likely want a better monitor to go with it at some point.

I have now owned this monitor a couple of months and am still very happy with it. I use it to watch DVD's (normal movies played using my computer's DVD drive.) I have not noticed any ghosting in normal viewing, although I did not specifically look for it.
