Avoid this if you can.......2007-09-07

I am sorely disappointed with this camcorder. Its lighting is not only poor -its erratic !! Sometimes at whatever angle I record, even in bright light, the resulting picture has unpredictable dark and bright lighting. This camera is just not worth it. The rewind and forward operations are plain frustrating. JVC wins hands down anyday!

Pleased with this purchase.......2007-08-29

First, I did not have any issues with the motor noise. It's present but I did not find it noticeable. Any ambient noise where you are filming masks the sound.

Love the size. It literally fits in the pockets of most of my pants and shorts, so you can forget about carrying around a bulky case.

I find the joy stick controls a little annoying because they're small, but it's not a big issue. One thing that does bug me is I have a lot of dust trapped in the viewfinder and I cannot get it out of there, even with an air compressor. Tempted to take that apart but it's probably a bad idea. I convert all my movies to DVDs and I'm happy with the quality. I miss my old Sony's nightshot capability, but this is a great replacement unit.

Simple and inexpensive.......2007-07-06

I have gotten a lot of use out of this video camera. It is not a fancy design, yet it has worked well. Audio with the internal mic is acceptable, but better with an external mic. (This is one of the only small camcorders I could find with an input for an external mic.) It is very good considering the price. I have used it with Adobe Primere Elements with good success.

Great Camcorder And Affordable.......2007-06-27

Purchased this camcorder for my daughter's family. She finds it very easy to use and lightweight so she can carry it to school functions easily. The tapes are readily available and easy to find. However, as time goes by, this format will become obsolete so don't buy it for the long haul. Nothing lasts that long these days anyway. I would recommend this camcorder as my daughter is taking nice movies of my grandchildren!

No focus ring.......2007-08-16

Actually, in responce to "Movie Star"s review, there is a difference in the GS83 and the GS85. The PV-GS85 and PV-GS80 both have a manual focus ring located on the lense. The PV-GS83 does not have the manual focus ring, but you can still manually focus it by using the 'Joystick'. The manual focus ring that is on the GS85 and GS80 is worth the extra money for someone that is going to need it, like an amature videographer, but for someone that just wants this as a family camcorder, then you do not need the focus ring and the PV-GS83 would be a great choice.

No manual focus.......2007-08-13

Just want to clarify that this particular model only has auto focus. You cannot manually move the lens to focus. This could be a drawback to some, but we've been using an older VHS camera for a long time that had no manual focus and it worked just fine. Other than that, Panasonic is rated one of the best in terms of picture quality. I can't give it a 5, since I haven't used this particular model yet. I have purchased it through eBay, though, and will make an additional comment in the future.

Very good value.......2007-06-06

First, for anyone wondering this camcorder is exactly the same as the PV-GS85. I spent a lot of time trying to figure out the difference between the two, and according to a Panasonic customer rep, the only difference is that the 85 has a USB cable in the box while the 83 has a blank tape instead. So if your looking for the best value, look for a 83 on ebay, you'll find you can get one new for about $150 less than a 85.

Features (7/10):
The best feature on the camcorder is the OIS, a feature rarely seen on budget camcorders. With OIS you can use the full 32x optical zoom reasonably well and have a fairly steady shot. The night mode is completely useless. Anything shot in this mode is a waste, it is a orange/yellow color and looks as though frames are missing, anything that moves faster than a snail will come out as a whitish blur. The camcorder does have a small LED light that works decently well at about 5 feet or less. There are no film effect features such as pixelize, stretch, B/W, sepia etc that are common on most camcorders. This was not a huge issue to me as you can add these things later on your computer. The Backlight feature works quite well. One nice feature it has is the Blank Search Function that finds a blank spot on the tape so you can start recording without risk of erasing stuff already there.

Design (6/10):
I found that when holding the camera in one hand, your thumb does not naturally rest on the record button. Its a bit of a pain (literally) to hold your hand in the position required to have your thumb ready to press the button. I have big hands, someone with smaller hands probably will not have this problem. Another minor gripe, the button for the LED light and the Menu button are right next to each other and the same size. This makes it difficult to find the Light button in the dark, which is when you would be needing it. The position of the zoom switch is right between my index and middle fingers, making it awkward to zoom.

Picture Quality (8/10):
I thought the picture quality was pretty good for a camera this price. I have had many different camcorders over the years, VHS, VHS-C, 8mm, Digital8, and MiniDV. This camcorder is superior to all but the VHS one (a $6000 model at the time of purchase). Filming outside produced a very rich, accurate color tone, it looked on film the same way it looked to my eye. The same can be said for well-lit indoor filming, even with uneven lighting or with people directly next to lamps I thought it looked very clear and sharp. In lowlight quality obviously goes down, although image noise and graininess were not that bad; much better than my other camcorders. The camcorder struggles to focus in low light, I tried using the LED light in the total dark from about 6 feet away, and while the image was visible, the camera couldn't focus it. The picture taking mode is fairly useless IMO. Images are saved to a SD card, the quality is about that of a cell phone camera. One nice thing, you can film and take a picture at the same time. You can record audio in both 12bit and 16bit (you should use 16bit if you're going to be putting your video on DVD), the quality seemed pretty good. Voices sounded accurate. Basically, videos sound like it sounded to your own ear, complete with some background noise. The zoom switch can make a clicking sound if you're not careful when you release it, this will likely be picked up on film.

Overall, this is a very good value for a camcorder, mainly because of the 32x optical zoom and the OIS. Picture quality was more than satisfactory for a budget model, particularly for outdoor filming. If you need something to film your kids, document your roadtrip or just have fun with, this is a good choice. It does not have a ton of features, but the average consumer will likely be satisfied with it.

optics are so-so.......2007-04-18

I bought this to use with my Elura 100, primarily for the wide-angle lens.

The wide-angle lens, when you "zoom" through it, you get a sort of a haze. That doesn't make sense, I know, but basically what I am saying is if you use the wide-angle lens, do not zoom in very much because the image breaks down and goes a little "fuzzy." But wide angle lenses are not meant to be zoomed through anyways, so if you have to zoom in on something take the lens off and do it.

The thing I actually love most about this kit is the little portable tripod that came with it! I use that sucker all the time with my digital camera for taking great low-light shots without a flash. Perfect for that.

Nice kit all in all, and the little lens pouches are a nice touch.

The quality of video & still pics is just awesome. The camera is very easy to use & with the extra battery you can shoot video for hours it seems. The pictures we took we printed out on glossy paper & look incredible.

Excellent value package.......2006-12-30

I bought this product a little over a month ago, but had to wait some three weeks to have it delivered by a friend of mine since I'm abroad, not living in North America.
I based my decision to buy this Canon Elura 100 camcorder on the fact that it was chosen by the Camcorderinfo site as the Best Of The Year, topping camcorders that cost more than 10x the price of this one, and there's a reason for that, given the excellent image quality and feature set, which give this camera an unbeatable quality/price ratio.
This particular kit comes with all items as advertised. At first I thought the handbag would be larger, but after I realized the actual size of the Elura 100 I found it to be okay, as it holds plenty of space for cables, charger, blank tapes, battery, etc. The tripod looks like it could be easily damaged, but I bet you aren't going to buy this to go cover a warzone or something like that. For domestic usage, is more than enough. The rest of the cleaning and care items are pretty useful and handy.
All in all, I'm happy with this buy, give it a try if you're looking for a value purchase that isn't short on features!
Highly recommended.

Poor for low light.......2007-01-10

I read a hundred reviews before buying the Elura 100. I was hoping the low light issue wasn't a major problem. I found it hard to truly get an idea of what "low-light" involved. After a couple of uses I did find filming the kids in the evening, even in a fairly well lit room (recessed lights and lamps), still produced grainy video. The daytime videos outside were excellent, no complaints with that.

Realizing most of the uses are for evening time(restaraunts, around the home, indoor kids parties) I ended up returning the camcorder and paying a little extra for the Sony HCR-DC96. I'm very happy with it and get very good video in low light situations.

If you're using (or plan to use) a high-definition or HD-ready TV, you'll appreciate the system's progressive scanning, which is referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image. This feature creates a picture with twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD image, providing sharper, higher resolution images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts. The LX3500D also offers 3:2 pulldown. DVD mastering introduces a common distortion when adjusting 24 frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video; 3:2 pulldown corrects this distortion to display a film-frame-accurate picture. I bought this system a month ago. I would have to say that it's simplicity is amazing, it's sleek and the speaker size is just right. Though, there's a downside:High frequencies are barely heard. I installed 5 surface mount tweeters beside each cube, and the sound improvement was very noticeable. I strongly recommend to anyone that owns this model to do the same, these tweeters are not expensive, and the upgrade is worth the effort.
All the system's other features are very user friendly. Also it has a zoom power (x1.5) that allows you to see widescreen bigger, as though you are watching full screen.
For the frequency response is that I give the system a strong 4 stars.

I have been looking and researching and after about 2 months, I just bought it. Are there better systems in this price range, of course there are, but I do not want to dedicate my life to it, so finally bouhgt this one. This has it all, and is a good system to buy.

I just installed the system in my home and I am going to give it a conservative 4 star even though I have found no short coming on this system yet.

Striking features:
1. Design and style - cant beat the looks.
2. Plays everything except DVD-RW.
3. Sound is quite nice.
4. Can take multiple inputs, and I have hooked the VCR and
dish network to its input.
5. Progressive scan at this price range, wow.
6. Outputs both the composite and S video out.
7. Powerful sub woofer.
8. Frequency response volume control, never seen that one
before.
9. Costs 2/3 rd of what I paid for my aiwa CD system 7 years
back.
10. 5.1 system.

Short comings:
1. VCD only has sound on the center and the sub woofer.
2. I think it can not handle PAL DVDs.
3. Holds only 1 disc, so keep changing the disc all the time.

Other features:
1. Speakers look like just about any other speakers in this
range.
2. Remote is to the point.
3. Generous wiring.
4. Needs RF modulator for older TVs.
5. Sub woofer stays on all the time ... wasting the
power, but that is true for all systems I think.

There is not much reviews on this system and also it is not a best seller either. I just checked and saw that some of the refurbished models are selling for more than twice what I paid for a new system, so I think I did alright.

Impressive home theater system with excellent power. On top of the great sound and quality video it has very stylish design features that compliment its quality audio and video output!!
