Not a reliable camcorder.......2007-05-07

Out of the box, the Elura 70 is fabulous. Amazing shots, nice 18x optical zoom, and great image stabilization. But after recording about eight tapes, the camera started to reject tapes when insterted. The error message "Remove the cassette" always appeared and the tape ejected immediately. Now the camera is unusable. Each time I put in a brand new tape the camera will start up, spin some wheels, and then stop the wheels, and eject the tape. I have tried an off-the-shelf mini-DV head cleaner, but that didn't work. Please, beware of this camera.

BEWARE CANON ELURA.......2007-02-05

I purchased the Canon Elura 70 and within 3-4 uses, the camcorder started giving me the "remove the cassette" error message and would not accept the tape. Still under warranty, I had to pay almost $200.00 to send it to Canon repair center. Over the next 12 months, I had to send it in again and again for the same problem as well as problems with the still photo button not working and the zoom lever not working and the camcorder zooming on it's own. Each time after the initial repair, I had to pay shipping and handling and insurance at a cost to me of approx. $16-$18.00 to send in the camcorder. After sending in the camcorder 5x over a period of a year and multible complaints and threats...Canon sent me a brand new Canon elura 70 and now the "New" camcorder is in the Canon Repair Center for problems with the Zoom "zooming on it's own", and the still picture button not working, after only having the camcorder for only 4 months. I'm afraid to use the camcorder for any video because it will give me an error message like the other one did. I am currently looking for a new camcorder with a name brand that is not "CANON" As for depending on this camcorder to video my children's life events as I had planned on when I bought it originally....well, they are growing up and I am missing out on videotaping any and all of them....since the camcorder is in the shop again!

Two thumbs down!.......2006-12-31

I am a huge fan of canon and thought they would be reliable with their camcorders as well. This camera lasted for about 1 year... about 10 tapes. Im having the same problems as other users where the tape got caught. I also have problems where the cam zooms by itself with the zoom button internally stuck.

Will cost me 180 to send in. Abosulutely insaine. Stay away from this one and consider something different than Canon.

A Very Disappointing Camcorder.......2006-07-06

- after about a year, after the warranty expires, that is. Before it broke on me, it was an excellent camcorder, especially for the point-and-shoot crowd. It had manual options that were very handy. Then, of course, it broke.

The tapes started jamming, the DV timecode was severely messed up, it gave odd error messages, and would turn off abruptly. I had maintained it very well, cleaning the heads regularly. The worst part, however, was dealing with Canon Customer Support. If you have never dealt with them before, ... they are bent on vacuuming money out of their customers. It would have cost me just under $200 to have this manufacturing defect repaired. Why spend that much money on a camera that only costs $500 to begin with?

I have found that this problem is common with all of Canon's lower-end camcorder series, including the ZR line and the Elura line. I have not ever had experience with the upper-end cameras like the GL1 or XL1, but through research online they seem to be better engineered. That said, I still will not buy Canon again because their support is so bad.

Skip this one - $700 in the toilet.......2005-11-01

Bought the Elura 70 the moment it was available, paid $700. Used it may 3-4 hours, got it out for the kid's birthday, started having problems with the tape stopping, now it will not accept any tape, constant "eject Cassette" error. 14th month and out of warranty. Seach the internet, you'll find this problem everywhere. $174 minimum to repair, probably/possibly more(with shipping/insurance $200 easily). Oh, and then you get a lovely 3 month warranty after the repair and you cannot purchase a longer warranty from the repair. A minimum of $200 and I get 3 months coverage on $700 unit? Thanks, I'll use that $200 to purchase a quality product instead.

Cost Effective.......2003-04-15

The cost effectiveness of this item is superior.

Occasionally the double tap of the CTRL button does not work, but that is easily solved by pressing the button on the box.

The cables were of good quality and color coded for today's PC's.

Only drawback is that it's not expandable.

I've only been using this for a couple of days, but it works seamlessly so far. With the computers I have, both running XP, I have to boot # 1 up first through this device and then # 2. But all works great like that and sure does make it much easier to go from one computer to the other. Both of my computers do have PS2 ports for mouse and keyboard. This unit does come with adapters, but I couldnt tell you how the unit works with older computers that need them. Anyway, I'm very pleased so far with this unit.

Defective KVM cable..........2002-08-12

I would have given this item a 5 but I received a defective KVM cable. After purchasing another KVM cable from a local computer store and attaching it to the switch box, the system is performing well as expected. I like the easy feature of switching PCs by a simple keyboard touch. Not to mention, I purchased the item on sale... If you have 1 AT model PC and PS/2 PC, the Linksys KVM100SK ProConnect is the way to go.

Cool Product, But Not Perfect.......2002-05-19

KVM Switch: what a cool product: enables controlling two computers (or more, but this specific product is limited to two) by one set of monitor, keyboard and mouse. This is a perfect way to save space. However, it's not perfect, meaning, sometimes when I boot both machines at the same time, one of them loses the link to the mouse and keyboard. This can only be fixed by rebooting the machine again, and in general, rebooting machines separately. Also, I am still unsure whether there is a graphic degradation. I would probably think there isn't one, but after reading other people's reviews I think there *might* a very weak grpahic degradation. But overall, I think it's a good tool, and I definitely recommend buying it.

How many pictures will it store? It is the most commonly asked question from digital camera enthusiast but usually the question that is the most difficult to get a straight answer about. Well, considering I worked in the memory industry for over 7 years I can help clarify this perplexing question and do so unbiased as I have since changed industries.

The Lexmark 512MB 16X CompactFlash Card ., like most 512MB cards, will store on average 568 pictures when used with a 2 megapixel camera, 426 images when used with a 3 megapixel camera, 256 pictures when used with a 4 megapixel camera, 204 images when used with a 5 megapixel camera, and 160 pictures when used with a 6 megapixel camera. These numbers are based off the assumption that you are going to shoot your images at the highest quality JPEG setting available for the camera and understand that they are estimates and may be off by as much as 10 percent due to numerous factors including the complexity of the scene being shot and the compression algorithm used by your specific camera.

I truly hope this review was helpful to you in determining whether this 512MB card is the right capacity for your specific needs.

A Great Ethernet Drive.......2006-08-02

I purchased this for the sole purpose of having a large storage device available for my Ethernet network at my home. I wanted a fairly large capacity drive and wanted to spend around $200.

The drive is performing very well. It was shipped formated with FAT32 file system but I was running into errors trying to copy files from my Mac. LaCie's excellent technical support advised me to format it to EXT3 which I ended up doing and have had no problems since. Doing so forfeits USB support but I did not care since my sole purpose was to use it as an Ethernet drive.

The drive is fairly quiet but that is not as important to me since I have it in my basement connected directly to my NetGear router.

I would highly recommend this product. It does not hurt that it is really slick looking too.

One thing to note, upon receiving it, I noticed that something was loose inside the case. I called tech support and they politely told me I could do one of three things. Send it back to LaCie, open the case my self, or do nothing. I opted to open the case. They said they made a note in my file that I was going to do this without any penalty about voiding the warranty. Under normal situations, opening the case would void the warranty. When I opened the case (two easy to remove screws), I found an extra plastic circuit board spacer loose. I removed it, closed up the case and the problem was solved.

Good and worth the money.......2005-10-26

This monitor has the best value in the class of 1600 x 1200. The pixels are sharp. I have no complain when using photoshop. And it is very bright.

However, 25 ms is not fast enough. When I open the Performance tab of Task Manager (Windows) and drag around, I can see the ugly latency. Yes, this problem exists on all LCD, more or less. I just have to remind potential buyers anyway.

Some people suggest using DVI instead of VGA for better quality. I agree. I happen to lack the resource to buy such video card, and VGA plug works well enough for me. So if you don't have a DVI card, don't shy away from this monitor.

You can also rotate the monitor 90 degrees for portrait mode. It is great for viewing PDF or word doc (support from video card required). But you don't have to if you wish to use landscape mode.

Great monitor at a great price.......2005-08-14

We use this monitor where I work in a software engineering environment. We stare at these monitors up to ten hours a day looking at source code and other text based displays. This is one of the best monitors I've ever used regardless of price. When I saw the price for this monitor on Amazon, I bought one for my own use at home. At home I use the monitor for programming and for gaming. It's performance is excellent in both realms. I don't know if the color reproduction is photo quality, but it looks good to me and that's all that matters as far as I'm concerned.

Excellent monitor for the price.......2005-05-27

I purchased a 213T to replace a three-year-old 181T. The 181T is still working fine (though it has some slightly noticeable burn-in). The 181T has an incredibly sharp picture (I work with text all day and I'm very fussy about monitors). I was dubious that the 213T could deliver the same picture quality with a 3" larger screen and priced hundreds less than I paid for the 181T.

I was pleasantly surprised. The 213T's picture is perfect. No dead pixels, extremely sharp, and colors that look even better than the 181T. Don't believe the other reviews that caution against using this monitor in analog mode. There is a perceptible difference between the digital and analog mode, but the analog picture is still of outstanding quality. I used analog mode for about a week before replacing my graphics card with a dual-DVI Matrox P650, and I could have lived with it, but I wanted both monitors running in digital mode.

Two noticeable differences between the 213T and the 181T: the 213T comes out of standby a lot faster (about 2 seconds instead of 5), and the fluid is much slower on the 213T. If I take a window with a dark blue background and white text, and drag it around on the 213T, the text smears to blue. There is almost no change in the text color on the 181T. This might be an issue for some people, but it isn't an issue with the way I use the monitor.

WOW! Beautiful, functional at a good price.......2005-05-26

Gorgeous image, rotation for LONG viewing with included PivotPro software, color/brightness correction for various settings (office lightings, home lightings, etc.) with included Natural Color software. Comes with VGA and DVI cables. Very pleased.

Not quite perfect, but very good.......2005-05-19

As all of the other reviews are stellar, I had to add my own cautions.

First, I am generally very happy with this monitor and highly recommend it for most uses. I primarily use this for stock charting software and it is excellent for this. I also am supplying a natural 1600x1200 res signal from my IBM t42 laptop so I am giving it as high a quality signal as possible. And the difference between a 21" and 20" screen is VERY usable!

But there are some issues that some of you might want to note:
* Sharpness: While the 213T is a 1600x1200 res monitor, it is clearly not as crisp and detailed as my 15" laptop, also a native 1600x1200 screen. There is a loss of some detail and an overall softness that would probably make a CAD/CAM or photo-junky frustrated at times.
* Getting the colors right: No problem getting things bright, but getting the colors to come close to that on my laptop or my desktop has been impossible. Photos that I know well simply look far too different on the Samsung and no amount of fussing with the monitor or the supplied software has been able to resolve this. Again, if you are a graphics or photo person, you might find this an issue.

As for me, I am perfectly happy since I bought this primarily to have a second monitor attached to my laptop for dual screen use with stock charts. And frankly a bit of color shift and a bit of softness is completely overshadowed by the huge picture and amount of 'stuff' that I can have active on the screen. Consider your needs and useage. This may be the perfect monitor for you as well. And comparitively very affordable, too!
