Canon's EOS-10D 6.3-megapixel digital SLR builds on the strengths of the award-winning EOS-D60 and offers a range of improvements to both the camera's design and its feature set. It offers a seven-point wide-area autofocus system, fast 3-frames-per-second burst rate, and an ergonomic, super-tough magnesium alloy body shell.
The 6.3-million effective pixel CMOS sensor--providing up to 3,072 x 2,048 pixels--is supported by Canon's unique high-power DIGital Imaging Core (DIGIC) processor. The speed at which the DIGIC processor works has allowed Canon to extend the number of full resolution images in burst sequences to nine, at a rate of 3 frames per second. As well as improved speed, DIGIC also helps produce more accurate color rendition while reducing image noise.
The metering system, using the newest metering algorithm available and a 35-zone evaluative metering system linked to all seven focus points, offers improved exposure consistency and stability. A range covering ISO 100 to 1,600 offers high-quality images across a very broad spectrum of shooting conditions. Photographers working in particularly poor light may also take advantage of an option to extend this range to ISO 3,200.
The EOS-10D is the first digital SLR camera to feature direct printing. Linking via a USB cable, you can make prints immediately from any of Canon's range of compatible bubble jet or CP printers--including the S830D, S530D, and CP-100--without the need to connect to a computer. Controls within the camera's own menu system allow you to choose print quantity, size, and image cropping. When using Canon's card photo printer CP-100, with the optional battery pack, prints can be made in the field away from a power supply.
Other features include:
- Automatic selection of FAT16 or FAT32 file systems, to support large-capacity CompactFlash Type I or II memory cards of over 2 GB storage size (such as Microdrives).
- 1.8-inch TFT (transreflective) LCD monitor with five brightness levels and 10x zoom.
- Super Intelligent Orientation Sensor detects whether the camera is being held in the portrait or landscape orientation when an image is captured, and automatically rotates the image in the camera's LCD preview screen and on a computer when downloading using Canon's ZoomBrowser software.
- Extended battery life providing approximately 650 images without flash or 500 images with 50 percent flash.
- Ability to save an image in RAW format even when it was shot in JPEG mode.
The EOS-10D comes complete with battery pack, compact single battery-charging unit, USB cable, video cable, the latest Canon software and Photoshop Elements. The EOS-10D accepts the same BP-511 battery pack, and the same BG-ED3 battery grip as the EOS-D60.

Focus mechanism is a nightmare!.......2006-12-01
Lots of trouble getting my million dollar digi to focus. (I got it as a gift dec 03) I have an original rebel, Elan 7E and consider myself pretty experienced with canon. I've never seen anything like this. I am about to give up and go back to film. Shooting small children and weddings are a nightmare with this. I have a bride with lots of well focused flowers and she is out of focus in most picures. Very frustrated.
Great camera, but doesn't last long - planned obsolescence.......2006-06-08
This is a fantastic digital camera - reasonably priced for the myriad of features it has. I use it professionally.
The low-light shooting is excellent, with reasonable artifacts, and the speed is also great. Auto focus is excellent most of the time, and the auto focus field can be adjusted through the menu.
I loved using it, and am considering getting another one despite its short life (read below).
After having it for 2.5 years, it broke down. The auto-focus mirror below the main mirror is attached to the body by a tiny spring which latches to a flimsy plastic part. This part simply wears out after about 20,000 shots (according to the camera rating and the many irrate customers with a same problem, posting on the web). It's designed to fail after about 3 years of use (depending on the amount of use it gets). This is a terribly bad design that could have been fixed by using a metal part, considering that this is NOT a disposable camera...
Repair takes up to 6 weeks, as the camera can only be repaired in their main repair center, and costs about $200.
I've been told that most of Canon digital cameras of this line carry the same defect, regardless of price. Too bad, considering that the overall quality of this camera encourages professional use...

The 10D is an outstanding digital camera. I have been using both of mine for over a year now and they have done everything I needed, when I needed it, wthout a single flaw. I really use the 10D. I have taken over 30,000 pictures with it. I use the optional 2 battery Bg-Ed on the 10D which gives me an easy 400 pictures. The 17-40 Canon Zoom Lens has worked spotlessly as well. Pictures are crisp. Easy manual focus and the auto focus works well even in low light. I like the solid feel of the 10D, especially with the 2 battery pack, and 550EX flash. I shoot exclusively on manual mode so I can't comment on the other settings. Adjusting the flash output, ISO etc are all easy and quick. I have found this to be a very intuitive camera. The viewing screen on the back of the camera is clear and gives me good feedback for adjusting my flashes or hot lights. I use Lexar 1GB CompactFlash cards. And I carry an Epson P-2000 Multimedia Storage Viewer for my back up. The only drawback that I have found has been with a couple of my women friends who have found it a bit heavy. I have not only gotten use to its weight but have come to really appreciate the "feel" of the camera. I can tell you that I will NEVER use film again. With an Epson Photo 2200 printer, iPhoto and my own digital darkroom thanks to Photoshop CS I have everything I need right here at home. For downloading the pictures to my MacIntosh G4 or Powerbook I use a firewire SanDisk Reader. It too works perfectly. So if you don't need the increased megapixal of the 20D I would suggest you consider the 10D. One great camera.
A Very Solid Product.......2004-12-29
The controls are a little complicated to get used to, especially the all-manual settings -- which should by definition be easy to use -- but overall this camera is very rugged and very capable. After I bought it, I took the D10 to Budapest, Hungary. I had a great view of the Danube and set my camera up for night shots. It did a brilliant job. How about this: take a digital night shot (use the largest image size possible), use a 300mm lense and blow the results up to 24x30 through Shutterfly.com. Image remained amazingly sharp. Colors were fantastic. The camera made it easy to look like a pro. The only gripe I have with this camera is that I wish it had a black and white setting like other less expensive Canon digitals, but this can be overcome with software so it's not a huge issue. The price is great, it has a magnesium body (vs. the Rebel's plastic body). You get a lot of the D1/D20/D30, without the cost.
Great Camera, one major flaw.......2004-10-21
I have had this camera for about 6 months. I love digital cameras, but my early sony's were too slow. This camera is very very fast. The detail is incredible. I have taken thousands of photos and rarely have any that are under exposed. probably one in two hundred. This would be even less if I were more competent.
The one major short coming I have had with this camera is that it locks up. I will get the display "PA-A" and it won't go away. This is generally only displayed when I first turn the camera on and it last only a split second. Othertimes, however, this message pops up in the middle of shoots and locks up the camera. The fix is a quick removal of the battery from its contacts. I have gotten pretty fast at it, but this should never be an issue. I have heard that this is a problem with the new 20D as well. That is not very reassuring.

Average camera that could be so much better.......2001-11-05
A first this appeared to be a good little camera brimming with functions. It takes nice clear pictures outdoor, but the flash is weak. The zoom is clumsy, jumping from one extreme to the other, giving more of an effect of 4 fixed focal lengths rather than a fluid zoom.
It's now broken haven taken the lightest of knocks on my last holiday. I don't know whether its worth repairing or whether I should take this a sign for a change. The battery life is poor (always keep a spare handy) and there's no mid-roll change.
Having said that, for the price, with minolta excellent optics and lenses, you could do a lot worse. It's light, compact and easy to use, with an excellent data-back.
Poor performance.......2001-04-03
After only a few rolls of usage my camera broke down. So far this is the 4th factory visit of my Vectis with the same problem. Indoor picture quality is horrible, but outdoor is very good. I bought for $299.00 when it first came out. Even at Amazon's low price I would not recommend this camera to anyone.
minolta 300l.......2001-03-13
Very disappointed in this camera. It does not have mid-roll change and the flash is very weak and it does not cover the entire zoom range. Most of the pictures taken indoor using the zoom lenses came out very dark. Picture quality for outdoor day time shots came out decent.

If you use SanDisk SD memory cards beware!!!!.......2004-08-17
I bought the Viking Intelliflash 6-in-1 USB Flash Memory Reader with the hopes of being able to save battery life on a digital camera. However, on trying an SD memory card from a camcorder I have, it ruined the card and said "files corrupted" and I lost all the pics. I read some of the other reviews and realised the problem lied with the SanDisk memory card I used.
I later tried a Kingston Memory Card I had bought for the digital camera and it worked fine.
Don't even think about buying this!.......2004-07-17
This is a piece of junk.
The first time I inserted a smart media card, the card went all the way into the unit. To get it out, I had to call customer support who told me how to disassemble the unit so that I could extract it. Great start!
It does not consistently read CF cards.
Bottom line-stay away.
Corrupted first disk I tried.......2004-07-11
I tried this the first time with a brand new SD bought on vacation - could see pictures fine on camera but when used this Viking memory reader said disk and files corrupted. Was able to retrieve all but first five photos fortunately - unfortunately one of the five photos was a precious one that cannot be retrieved that was the main reason for the trip (daughter and father dancing).

I use several different types of cards for my camera and PDA, so I figured this would be a great thing to have. Installation is very easy, especially under Windows XP, where it it true Plug-and-Play. For other systems there is a CD with drivers included.
What is supposed to happen is that when it installs is that it will maps an addition four drives onto your computer; one for each slot. Unfortunatly it does not seem to be able to map the Smart Media drive. Even after installing the drivers off of the disc it was not able to read the SM drive.
I had two of these things; the first I exchanged for a new one after it failed to read anything. On the first one the slots weren't mounted to the face plate correctly, so when I put in the Smart Media card it fell into the back of the device and I had to spent five minuets shaking the thing out.
The second one I got was mounted correctly, but unable to read the SM cards. While it could read the Secure Digital card, it erased everything on it. Fortunatly I only had a couple of files on it, but a lot of people use SD cards for storing programs or pictures, and they would have lost everything if they used this. The Compact Flash card was the only one that worked reliably, but even that one I had problems with since it was difficult to jam the card all of the way into the slot.
I am very dissapointed with this device and with Viking, who usually makes good products. Most people don't use all six types of cards, so a lot of them would go to waste, so I would recomend just getting seperate readers for each card. It'll cost more, but probably worth it in the long run.
On a side note, I would just like to say that Amazon.com has an excellent No-questions-asked return policy. After I asked to replace my first one they paided the return postage and sent me a new one two days later.

"We have had a few customers report seeing problems with some Sandisk cards. It appears to be a compatibility issue with Sandisk's new SD cards and the reader. The new Sandisk cards read/write speeds are faster than their older cards, and this difference may be the cause of the error.
Currently Engineering is looking at the problem. When we find a resolution I will send you an update."
