Perfect for me / without the kit lens........2006-06-28

I purchased this camera as my first. It provides all the functions I could ask for. I intend too purchase the Cannon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM lens for my telephotos. I did research on both the 7N camera and L series lens, in which they compliment each other very well. This seems to be best for my intended photographing. I have shot ten roles of film and very pleased with the results. As an amateur photographer, this suits all my needs. I would suggest buying the 7N camera body itself and adding the Cannon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM lens, for my standard use.The Cannon EF 28-105mm f4/5.6 Autofocus Zoom is the lens which is part of this kit, inhibits the quality of photos, that require superb focus at closer ranges.

Canon Triumphs Again!.......2004-05-02

This is the successor to the EOS Elan 7. It is what the Elan 7 could have been, should have been, and, finally, is. Though the Elan 7 didn't leave much to be desired, there were a couple of modifications that would have made it the perfect camera for intermediate to advanced photographers. These improvements are an illuminated external LCD, better light metering, and faster AF.

The new finish and emblems are gorgeous. The finish is extremely matte, so it's very dark and handsome, and the Elan 7n logo is now a relief on a plaque attached to the body that's also holographic, instead of the painted on white and red logo of the old Elan 7. Though this has nothing to do with its ability to produce amazingly focused and metered images, it sure makes it one heck of an attractive body.

It is arguably one of the quietest 35mm SLR cameras ever made, and I agree. Its whisper drive film transport produces noise so quiet you can only hear it if your ear is pressed right to the body. The mirror and shutter action, though audible, are also well below the sound levels heard in most other cameras. It makes the higher-end Canons, and just about all 35mm Nikons, Minoltas, and Pentaxes sound like gun shots by comparison. Also, when the silent film rewind option is set in the camera's custom functions, this, too, cannot be heard without pressing one's ear to the body. But, even its high-speed film rewind is quiet, if you ask me, and it takes only 5 seconds to rewind a 24-exposure roll of film!

Its auto-focus system is the fastest any Elan has ever seen. It can track things moving at a whopping 31 miles per hour at close distances! Trust me, this is fast! Only the rarest of sporting events would pose a challenge to this camera's AF system.

Its light metering, especially its new E-TTL II flash metering, is almost frighteningly intelligent and accurate. When used with an EX series Speedlite, the camera uses distance information from the lens plus its readings from the 35-zone light meter (both from an ambient light reading and a pre-flash reading) to calculate an appropriate flash exposure. This works in much the same way Nikon's 3D-matrix metering does, so, now, Nikon has some good competition in this category. I find that my Canon Elan 7n with the 420EX Speedlite produces exposures that are just as beautiful as those produced by Nikon systems. And, the high-speed flash sync is wonderful, because I can shoot with wide-open apertures and not worry about not being able to use the flash with the higher shutter speeds that result.

Its shooting speed is a grin-inducing 4 frames per second. Even the EOS 3 only does 3.5 fps without the incredibly expensive power booster with the Ni-MH battery pack, and the Nikon N80 only does about 2.5 frames per second. Oh, and you can get a battery pack for the Elan 7n (the BP-300) that will let you use AA batteries while providing you with an extended horizontal grip for better stability, a vertical grip for more comfortable work in the vertical orientation, and vertical shutter release and exposure lock buttons. Even the Nikon N-80 doesn't offer a vertical grip or shutter release with its battery pack.

This camera features mirror lockup, with the ability to use the RC-1 or RC-5 infrared wireless shutter remote. So, now, not only do you not get camera shake from the mirror going up during macro photography, but you also don't have to touch anything attached to the camera such as a shutter release cable, which could also cause camera shake. That's awesome.

The Elan 7n also lets you customize its settings and performance with 13 custom functions. This includes mirror lockup (another feature missing from the Nikon N80 or lower-end Canons), leaving the film leader out after rewinding it, controlling what the various buttons on the body do, as well as how the camera controls auto-focus assist lights, the flash, etc.

And, let's not forget its 7-point wide-area auto-focus, with selectable points and light metering being linked to the selected focus point.

All of these features, plus several I didn't even mention, make for extremely reliable point-and-shoot simplicity for the casual or inexperienced photographer who wants to get great shots without the hassle of learning all the stuff that's involved in true hands-on photography, yet the camera provides more features than even the pros can shake a stick at. And, it does it for around $300.00, which is 1/3 to 1/4 of the cost of comparable bodies.

CON's:

-My only complaint about this camera is its lack of a real focus assist beam. Most of the EOS bodies have built-in near-infrared focus assist lights that project patterns of vertical, horizontal, or combinations of both lines onto the subject for low-light and low-contrast AF operation. Why on Earth Canon decided to make the Elan 7/7n's built-in flash the AF assist light seems to defy all conventional logic and wisdom. First, it fires a short but rapid burst of flashes that are not only annoying to the user, but generally frightening to living subjects (I used it in a restaurant once with my Elan 7, and people actually screamed in terror...I've since learned to disable this in the custom functions...in fact, it was the first CF I set when I got the Elan 7n). Second, if it's being used for low-contrast subjects, well, it just doesn't help there at all, because it doesn't add any contrasting patterns for the AF system to focus on. However, when you attach an external flash, this problem is usually solved, because most dedicated flash units have focus assist beams.

I just purchased the Linksys CF card for my IPAQ. The Driver for Pocket Pc 2003 isnt on the install disk. You have to download it from a ftp site at linksys! Problem is that the BETA driver isnt there! They put there ad that it is for 2003 but it isnt! Good luck in getting the driver!

I received this about a week before my Dell Axim... I couldn't wait to try it out. I installed the software - the Pocket PC sync'd up - slid in the card and I was off. I have a Linksys wireless access point in my apartment and it detected it immediately. Makes the whole idea of a pocket PC worthwhile - you can browse web pages (on a small screen), send & receive POP3 email (with attachments), Instant Message, etc. Can't wait to try it out on a public access point (like in bryant park). This will be another Linksys product that I recommend to my customers (and the Axim is pretty sweet too - not nearly as bulky as I thought it would be).

As some other reviewers mentioned - it does drain a battery.

I purchased this card with my Sharp Zaurus SL-5000D. I know that the Zaurus has the drivers already installed for this card so I plugged it in and it was up and running in no-time. I have a Netgear MR314 wireless router and it has no problems working with this card. The speed is great, although I never actually measured it, but many of the websites come up pretty fast. The only downfall to the card (and all other compact flash wireless NIC cards for that matter) is that the unit drains batteries too fast. It eats up a lot of juice and forces me to plug in the charger. The range on the unit is not as good as I hoped, but my router could also cause some problems. So far this is the only wireless CF card I tried, but I'm happy with it.

Good value for money.......2005-06-15

I was looking around for something to carry my 12" PowerBook. everything was so expensive and fancy. Then I found the SportFolio Sleeve. It is very good value for money, and protects the computer just fine! Yes, it is nice to have a backpack where I can fit in all the papers and books also, but they are quite expensive, and I will not be able to fit in everything I need anyway. This is a nice snug fit for the computer, and the padding makes it is safe from bumps and presses. It is very lightweight, and does not take up much space when not in use. The only issue I have is that it squeeks when I carry it!

Good camera for beginners.......2005-12-19

This is a nice camera for amateur photographers like myself. The picture quality is good, although not as sharp as more expensive cameras. My biggest complaint is that the pictures seem a little washed out; they don't have the vibrant color of more expensive cameras. I've used this camera for a few years now, and it's been very reliable. The battery life is decent, but I recommend using rechargeable batteries to save money in the long run.

Bottom line: This is a nice entry-level camera that should meet the needs of most amateur photographers.

You can do better.......2004-05-20

Visioneer has made digital cameras affordable, but you can do better with a little bit more money. I took over 2,000 pics with my camera in the course of one year before it gave out. Now I have to go out and buy another camera. I called Visioneer and they do not do repairs. Visioneer is a basic and descent intro level camera...but you get what you pay for. For another $75 you can go out and get a good Sony or Olympus with better service. But if you don't want to spend the money you get what you pay for with Visioneer

Works well for me.......2003-07-23

I had a chance to buy one about 5 months ago ... but didn't due to the reviews here. Wish I had not relied on them cause this puppy works fine for me in all aspects. I was looking for a entry level digital to use instead of disposible cameras. It produces good quality images even in economy more and the 8meg internal memory gets about 120 pics. It does have problems in low-lighted areas but so does all point and shoot cameras. Was actually suprized by how good the quality of the images were once they were dumped to the computer. The thing works fine for my needs so far.

Addendum: 1 week after buying it the TV output stopped working. Trying to get a replacement rather than a refund cause I like the it so much at the price I paid for it.

Pay alittle more for a real Digital Camera.......2003-05-03

I am very disappointed with this camera, from the quality of its pictures to the quality of the camera itself. Save your money and add another 75-100 dollars and buy a real digital camera. I have a Sony Digital camera that I used to borrow from work with less resolution that takes better quality pictures. At one time I lost all my pictures on my card because I slightly (and I mean slightly) bumped the camera, and these pictures were from my European trip that I cannot get back.

I don't like it at all.......2003-04-07

I bought the Visineer LX200 around December as a Christmas gift for my fiancé. We used it for about 2 weeks and grew very annoyed that the viewfinder is blurry and barley usable. The pictures come out sub-par because the way it renders the light is never quite right. On top of that, my camera stopped working after a few weeks and I have not been able to get assistance from Visioneer to solve the problem.
