Quite simply, the Canon PowerShot G2 is an elegant, easy-to-use joy of a digital camera that boasts impressive 4-megapixel resolution, a 3x optical zoom, a bright LCD monitor that swivels off to the side of the camera and tilts up and down as needed, and maximum overall creative control in addition to a fully automatic mode. Of course, none of this comes as much of a surprise to anyone familiar with its popular predecessor, the PowerShot G1. Both of these cameras have features and picture-taking modes similar to Canon's EOS cameras, which means they have what Canon calls a "very camera-like feel." Some of the G2's more obvious improvements over the G1 (besides higher resolution) include a champagne gold finish, larger grip for easier handling, improved image and color quality, new photo-effect shooting mode for various effects, including black-and-white and sepia, and a new high-speed selectable three-point autofocus.

The G2's 4-megapixel CCD captures images at user-selectable resolutions of 2,272 x 1,704, 1,600 x 1,200, 1,024 x 768, and 640 x 480. This range allows for detail-rich 8-by-10-inch prints that match the results of film cameras as well as easy-to-upload images for the Web and e-mail. Choose between three varying degrees of JPEG compression or store images in the 10-bit RAW data file format for faster transfer without any image quality loss. Your computer easily translates the RAW files into TIFF files using Canon's included software.

The telescoping, 3x optical zoom lens (34-102mm equivalent on a 35mm camera) with 3.6x digital zoom, offers both automatic and manual focus control. The improved, high-speed, selectable three-point autofocus system allows flexibility in composition over the single focus point of the G1. A distance scale has been added on the LCD monitor for precision focus adjustment that works best for extreme close-ups. Improved circuitry allows the G2 to perform these advanced functions with faster image capture times and longer battery life than the G1.

Like the G1, the G2 has point-and-shoot settings that take the guesswork out of almost all situations, but the manual controls and creative options are where this camera stands out from the competition. Twelve EOS-style shooting modes allow for a wide range of creative possibilities, with manual focus zoom, adjustable aperture priority at 50, 100, 200, and 400 ISO, selectable shutter speed, and six preset white balances--sunny, cloudy, tungsten, etc. Canon has provided four presets for professional results when shooting for maximum depth of field, portraits, landscapes, and night scenes. Other creative controls include the photo-effect mode that allows four possible variations of the normal color saturation: vivid color, standard color, sepia tones, and standard black-and-white.

Two video formats have also been included, allowing for 30 and 120 seconds of moving images with audio. Slow shutter-speed mode allows extended exposures in low-light situations. Autoexposure bracketing allows you to intentionally over- and underexpose two extra shots to help capture the best picture possible. Five different flash modes, including red-eye reduction, handle after-dark challenges. The TTL hot shoe is fully compatible with all Canon EX-series Speedlite flashes. The included software package goes beyond standard image processing with a remote capture function that allows complete control and manipulation of the camera functions from your computer keyboard. Canon's Stitch Assist program allows you to combine up to four images into one, seamless, panoramic view.

Exterior design features include the highly versatile LCD monitor from the G1 that needs no improvement; its 270-degree rotation allows all angles of image composition from around corners to self-portraits. Changes in ergonomics, as requested by the users of the G1, include a contoured grip for better one-handed shooting and a more streamlined look. Photographers new to the digital market will find the G2 as easy to use as previous PowerShot models, while professionals will be pleased with the improved selection of creative options for capturing the best possible images.

The G2 comes complete with USB port and cable for connection to PC or Macintosh computers; Canon's digital camera software package for downloading, processing, and organizing your images; a NTSC cable for connecting to a television set; a rechargeable BP-511 lithium-ion battery pack and AC adapter for charging the battery in the camera; a generous 32 MB CompactFlash card; infrared remote control; lens cap; and neck strap. The camera weighs about 14.8 ounces, and its dimensions are 4.8(W) by 3.0(H) by 2.5(D) inches.

I've had my Canon G2 for four years and it still takes simply Gorgeous pictures. People ask me if my pictures on the wall was from a studio. I tell them I shot them with my Canon. Crisp and super clear pictures. Easy to use. The best find!! Love it!!!!! Even when you enlarge to 10x15. The clarity is still perfect...

This is the kind of camera that is a joy to use and explore. I have been using this along with a Digital SLR for about 3-4 years now and it still works great. I must have shot over 10000 shots using this camera with most shots being exceptional. The lens is fantastic, build is rugged, battery life is exceptional. This is a classic camera worth keeping for many years. For an avid photographer, the Powershot 'G' series is a good camera to have along with an SLR.

A masterpiece of a digital camera.......2006-02-17

I've had this camera since April 2003, and it has been one of the best electronics purchases that I have made. I've taken about 5,000 shots with this camera to date, and the image quality with all of them is outstanding, even by today's standards.

This camera is capable of producing images up to 11x14 inches without noticeable image grainyness. The F2.0 lens is superb and produces super sharp images. The features are fantastic. The panorama mode is something I use a lot more that I thought I would and produces stunning, seamless panoramas which could easily pass as gallery prints.

If you can still find this camera, purchase it! You will not be sorry.

G2 in simple words.......2005-09-20

The G2 is a special camera. I bought it after 3 months of research in December 2002. It was a time when Canon had fixed all previous issues with the G1 and was improving on G2 to release the G3. I wanted a digital camera that can be used as a point and shoot one and also some advanced features for me to do some pro kind of photography and guess what I concluded and bought... the G2 After having it for more than 2 years, I think I can write a reasonable review of it. It is a simple advanced camera !!! Sounds like an oxymoron, but it really is that. It is simple enough that an average Point and shoot person can use it and advanced enough that a pro can do some good shots with it. It has enough options in the preset modes to give a quick nice picture in each of those modes and also has a set of manual features for more creativity. The pictures are clean, crisp and nice. It has the largest lens compared to any camera in that segment. The software that comes along with the box is good value for money & sophisticated. I do not have to list the long line of features that this camera gives for such a small price
Some of the negative things I find in this camera are
1. Is heavy and is a little oversize to be carried in the pocket
2. The operations like switch on, switch off, writing image to disk and few other actions are a little slow.
3. The flash recharge is also slow.
If you are a beginner or just want a simple easy to use point and shoot camera, don't buy it. If you are pro and want an advanced camera for professional shots, don't buy it. If you are inbetween, then this camera is for YOU.

Otherwise, is a great camera, love it and I think I have already taken my investment out of the camera, but looks like this just the beginning !!!

This was our first digital camera. Very easy to use, useful features, and high quality photos. Definitely a good deal.

GREAT .......2005-02-24

I got this 160GB drive in December of 2004 and used the software that came with it to do a full backup.

That is the only time I used the software because I have a much better software for my needs, Second Copy, http://www.secondcopy.com

I have used Second Copy for a long time. You create "profiles" where you tell it what you want it to copy and where to put it. I use it to synch my desktop with my laptops. So now I added profiles, for example, Word to Maxtor, Catalyst to Maxtor (Catalyst is a court reporting software I use), and I once I create the profile where I tell it exactly what to copy, I just click on the profile and it does its thing.

I used the Maxtor to update my brand new computer, which I got in January. It was FAST.

I did have a problem with the Maxtor and there was a solution.
Windows Explorer oddly was not showing the Maxtor drive. It was showing "external drive" but not Maxtor. Properties of this "external drive" showed it as empty. CLEARLY SOMETHING WAS WRONG.

It ended up that scan disk needed to do its thing. When it did, I got a message that files were fixed or whatever it said. No problem since then. Also I keep the Maxtor on AT ALL TIMES. Even though I shut down the computer and turn off my printer and monitor once a day, at night, I keep the Maxtor on. I think turning it on and off (even once a day) contributed to the above problem.

This is a great product and was recommended to me by someone who really knows his stuff, Jim Barker, the owner and creater of SearchMaster, http://www.searchmaster.tv, a fantastic product that I couldn't live without.

Almost perfect external drive.......2004-09-12

My basic criteria for an external drive were:
1) Supported in Mac OS X
2) Quiet
3) Neat looking
The OneTouch is by far the quietest external drive. It's been fast and reliable as well.
What not 5 stars?
The (bright blue) light on the front of the drive blinks when it goes into low-power mode, which is most of the time. I really wish it didn't do this.

Cheap 36 in TV, get what you pay for.......2003-12-29

If you want a fairly large TV for an affordable price this is it. Forget about watching the beautiful HDTV channels or progressive scan DVDs this is not a digital TV. The sound and picture are ok. The menu is sparse because there are not too many bells and whistles on this TV. It has 3 types of inputs which I am using all 3. I have the cable box connected via S-Video. I have the DVD connected via component (Pr Pb Y) and the VCR connected via regular cable. You can also use composite cable (red white yellow)instead of S-Video. The S-video and composite share analog audio inputs (red white) and the component has its own analog audio inputs. There is also an analog audio output on the back of the TV. The front has composite inputs as well, I dont know which one of the three share it. I payed $700 for this TV at Sears on February 2003.

Great picture and sound, limited digital connections.......2003-04-21

If you are looking for a great picture with the ability to connect with your sound system with good results, this is the a terrific set. The picture is as good or better than any I have seen at much higher prices. The only drawbacks I have found are there is only one S-video connection, and the lack of digital audio out connections (I had to direct wire my DVD and VCR to my receiver which makes for a cumbersome playback). Those minor inconveinces were well worth it considering the pictue quality and the low price. I give 5 stars (*****) to the video performance and deducted one for the limitations outlined above.

WHACKY BUTTONS.......2005-07-04

After a month the controll pad goes beserk. The sensors in the mat get stuck, and the mat registers the wrong way. Say you tap a button when the mat is new, it will register perfectly. Then about a month later you do the same thing, it will tell you you hit the mat early, late , or not at all. Next it will say you hit the buttons even when your not even standing on it.

UP button problems.......2005-01-18

I bought this product and it seems to work perfectly; it dosent seem to slide and it responds with the the touch of your toe, all except the UP button, which I found the sensor for when setting it up, (I use it on PC with a converter), but could not get it to respond as much as I stomped on it when playing the game. It cannot be fault of the converter because all of the other buttons worked with no flaws. I hope it is just a glitch with my particular pad, but I wouldn't chance it.

it shipped sooo fast. got it 2 business days after ordering. the only thing is it does slide a little... but if you go to any carpet store. you can get this rubber anti glide stuff you put under carpets to keep them from sliding. i put a couple stips under the dance pad and it like dosnt slide at all. the stuff grips to carpet hard wood anything really.

This dance pad works great, but I'm disappointed for a few reasons.

First of all, it gives off an annoying scrunchy noise when you step on it, which makes it difficult to concentrate on the music... And of course, the entire pad slides a lot, as well as it's "wrapping", no matter if you play on hardwood or carpet.

Try to find a metal dance pad instead of this cheap garbage bag. They're expensive, but better.
