If possible, I would have given the camara some negative stars.
I was glad when I first got the camera. But it did not function at all after I used the camera for less than 10 times within a year. I called customer service and was told to send it back to factory. I was told I would be charged about $160 to fix the camera. I asked what the problem was and was told they did not know what the exact problem was until they took the camera apart and gave a close check!
If you want to find a reliable digital camera, try some other brand but not canon.
Good camera after getting around a few weak points........2003-12-14
I have one of these in my glove box and use it all the time. My other Camera is a G2 and admit the G2 is far better than the S20. As most will agree the battery is flat too soon to trust for more than 20 mins. I've built some Li-ion batteries for this camera and solved the problem. I now can run almost 3hrs. before a charge in needed. Canon made a big mistake powering this with 5 AAA Ni-MH cells, should have been the Li-ion's like my G2. The G2 goes forever on a charge and the Li-ion batteries hold a solid charge with a very low rate of static dicharge.
The S20 is still a valid camera in my bag and many of my local news photos are shots taken with my S20. Its been a solid kick around digital thats hit the floor many more times than any plastic model could ever take, and if its too heavy for some then I guess you'd be crying about why Canon made the case out of plastic. Yes I have dents in my S20 but the case is why my S20 has lasted the many miles and bumps it has. OK so the S20 is a basic camera in todays market but as a used 3.3MP (Amazon's, header incorrectly states 3.2)
Digital its been time and road tested to be an Excelent example.

This camera works well. The image quality is good. It does not break or malfunction. The CompactFlash card is popular and nearly standard. On the downside, the battery life is quite short, there is no included USB-computer support, and pictures seem to come out somewhat overexposed so an image editing program is a must. Overall I wouldn't hesitate to get this camera again because the good points really outweigh the bad.
Poor ergonomics, mediocre picture quality.......2002-12-20
I've owned this camera for about two years, and I'm generally pretty unhappy with it.
My biggest complaint is the incredible delay between the time you hit the shutter button and the time this thing actually snaps off a picture ... it varies depending on conditions, but usually is a full 2-3 seconds. That doesn't sound like much, but try counting it to yourself ... one Mississippi, two Mississippi, three Mississippi ... and imagine trying to take any kind of action shot with that sort of delay. Forget about kid pictures, they don't sit still long enough for this thing! I've gotten more pictures of the backs of my kids' heads than I can count.
The digital zoom is hokey and clumsy to use. The optical zoom works well, but is underwhelming at 2x power.
The detail in the full 3 megapixel shots is very nice, but the color balance and exposure are often too dark, too orange, whatever. Outdoor shots in full light usually look good with nice contrast and detail. The flash is weak, as noted by other reviewers.
Nearly all of this camera's functions are dependent on a fragile four-way "joypad" control. Mine broke after a few months, and was replaced free (after another 2 months of delay) by Canon. The knob on the top that selects operating modes feels very flimsy, and sticks out such that it is easily jarred into an "on" setting when the camera is slipped into or out of a pocket or bag.
Canon's lack of inclusion of a rechargeable battery and recharger are inexcusable for a camera that burns through $15 disposable batteries in a few days.
One last complaint -- this camera is heavy for its size! The metal body (aside from the flimsy controls) has a rugged feel, but you will definitely feel the weight of this unit if you lug it around in a pocket.

Died after 2 years.......2003-12-03
We got an E6 Error on our camera, sent it to the Canon Authorized Repair in Illinois. We received an estimate for $155, with a note that it could cost more to repair. There was no explanation of the problem, just "fix due to E6 error." So we bought a new camera (Sony) and gave up on the Canon. We owned the camera for 2 years and 3 days.

I use this as one of my backup drives on a Mac OSX machine. I actually have 2 backups one being redundant. When adding external drives to any Mac they should always be reformatted with disk utility. After I formatted them and started to use them they would crash my machine when they were both on. After talking to the Maxtor support it was determined that all I needed was a different type of driver that I accessed from their website. There is no such thing as a perfect brand of hard drive they all suffer from the same problems. I have known people who have had maxtors for over 10 years with no problems. sometimes you get a lemon and they crap out after 3 weeks. It happens to all of the manufacturers. The point of all this rambling is be vigilant! Do multiple backups of the things that are truly irreplaceable. Pictures should be archived to CD or DVD at least 2 times a year. All it takes is to lose the first 3 years of you children's life to pound this concept home. As for the hard drive you can choose any reputable brand and be reasonably certain that it will be OK. Just don't get USB 1.0 like I did because it took 38 hours to backup 100gig. You should buy the largest capacity that you can afford and go with Firewire or USB 2.0
Personally I don't use the Button or the retrospect software. I use Backup from apple, but I have heard it works just fine.
A Must Have!!!.......2005-09-15
I bought this backup drive after I nearly lost everything that I had on my laptop, and I couldn't be happier since. If you are a laptop owner like myself, then this is absolutely one item that you must have. First of all, laptop internal drives generally tend to be more expensive and less reliable, and second of all, you've simply got to protect whatever precious you might have on your personal computer. I almost lost all the pictures of my 1 year old daughter, and I am not taking any more chances. I have a wireless network setup in my house, so using this drive in connection with Linksys Network Storage Link NSLU2, I can send/retrieve files without been physically connected to the drive. It's totally awesome! I haven't noticed any problems with speed either. It also comes with Dantz Retrospect Express program that allows you to do your backups automatically. Nice little program which worked well so far for me. All together, a solid drive and a must have computer accessory.
DRIVE FAILED. 18 Months old........2005-09-08
Here's my review: I won't be buying Maxtor again.
The drive failed within 18 months. Not sure if I'll recover the lost data. I've never had a drive fail, so this is very disappointing.
Moral of story: Find a better external hard drive company. It seems there are too many similar stories to convince me to buy Maxtor again.
Reliable? A Backup Device Needs To Be.......2005-04-20
The hard drive crashed in my machine and I ended up replacing the entire computer and changing brands. I was going to buy the Maxtor A01B120 to use as a backup device until I canabalized my failed PC and noticed that the drive that crashed was a Maxtor! I spoke to friends and found they had similar problems.

Nice piece ... with minor unsatisfication.......2004-01-06
Just opened the box 20 min ago. Pop in different kinds of DVD disc and MP3 disc as well as DivX disc. All run flawlessly. The main reason for me to buy this player is to have DivX play, also, the new wma play feature is attractive.
One issue though, when playing MP3, it can't allow random playing! For those who have 100+ songs on one disc, this is very inconvenient. It is purely a software/firmware issue and should have been solved long time ago.
Same happens to JPG play back, but it is less hassle.
Overall, it is a neat machine. Haven't tried the progressive scan since all component inputs are back of my TV. Should be good.
The video/audio quailty is good, well, up to my anticipation.
