Getting started with the S30 couldn't have been simpler. We just slid open the lens cover and started shooting. Setting the camera to automatic mode, we were able to take vivid photos with accurate colors and outstanding detail. The 3x optical zoom--10x if you factor in the digital enhancement--made all the difference in our outdoor photos, letting us frame our shots perfectly.

A quick look at the options dial of the S30 shows that its capabilities extend well beyond quick snapshots. Even novices can take advantage of the camera's video mode, which can capture short videos. Though nowhere near camcorder quality, these videos are perfect for putting on a Web page or sending via e-mail, and the built-in microphone records sound for videos or notations on individual photos.

A bit more complicated is the photo-stitch mode, which lets you take panorama photos by lining up multiple pictures to cover vast areas and then stitching them together into a grand panorama on your PC. The handy continuous-photo mode enables you to shoot up to three images per second, ideal for capturing sporting events or wildlife.

The camera comes with only a 16 MB CompactFlash card, and you'll definitely want to purchase an additional memory card as a 16 MB card only holds approximately 16 3-megapixel images. Canon's S30 and S40 cameras fill a gap in the company's digital lineup. Nestled between the ultra-tiny Elph models and the feature-packed PowerShot G and Pro models, the S30 and S40 combine most of the portability of the former with nearly every advanced feature of the latter.

With the exception of their CCD sensors (the S30 is a 3-megapixel model, while the S40 is 4-megapixel), the cameras are essentially identical. Each features a brushed aluminum body with a sliding clamshell lens cover, a 3x optical zoom Canon lens, and a 1.8-inch LCD on the back of the camera for previewing and reviewing shots.

For beginners, the cameras are point-and-shoot simple. Just twist the dial to Auto and start snapping pictures. For more experienced photographers, both models include aperture priority, shutter priority, and full manual modes, plus manual focus, exposure compensation, slow-sync flash, spot metering, and adjustable ISO (from 50 to 400 on the S40, and 50 to 800 on the S30).

Movie mode lets you capture video clips with sound. At 320 x 240 or 160 x 120 pixels, the movies aren't camcorder quality, but they're fun and convenient, and they're perfect as e-mail attachments. The cameras also include an unusual voice-memo feature, which lets you record up to 60 seconds of audio with each image.

To provide maximum battery life in the smallest possible space, the cameras use a proprietary lithium-ion battery (both the battery and a charger are included). The battery charges quickly and holds a reasonably long charge, but if you're planning to use the camera for extended outings, a spare NB-2L battery is a good idea. A larger-capacity memory card is also advisable if you want to shoot more than a dozen photos at a time or if you decide to really take advantage of the Movie mode. The cameras use Type I or Type II CompactFlash cards, including the Microdrive. To print your photos at home, the S30 and S40 connect directly to Canon's CP-10 and S820D printers for easy printing--you don't even need a computer.

If you're looking for a camera with the sleek, compact style of a point-and-shoot with the extensive manual controls of an advanced amateur camera, the S30 and S40 are both great choices.

Very good for the price these days.......2006-05-24

I've had my camera for about 5 years now, I think it takes great pictures overall. Redeye is a problem I've noticed like some of the other owners, even if you have redeye reduction turned on it's still a problem. Aside from the redeye problem with flash, it takes incredible daylight photos. Bright, colorful, amazingly clear with alot of nice manual modes and auto mode is also very good. Very durable also, I've dropped my camera many times and it keeps on working.

My S30 did all it was expected to do as far as imaging resolution and photo quality was concerned.
Downside issues with this camera:
LCD screen - Poor to zero visibility. OK for auto shooting but useless for creative photography,
Auto focus and close-up focus did not work 100% of the time. Continuous focus was hit & miss.
Battery life inadequate - 20 mins to 1/2 hr at best
Camera was returned to Canon during Warranty but none of the above issues were resolved.
Sold the camera after 18 months of serious useage

Red Eye is a Problem.......2005-05-31

This was an OK camera but red-eye was a problem from Day 1. Also had trouble taking good night pictures. The 4 Star rating here is WAY too high for this camera. See the most recent reviews.

Prone to failure after the warrentee expires........2005-03-27

I agree with the reviews by Simplicissimus & "curious", it was a great camera until it died. Mine had a critical failure just over one month past the warrentee running out. I paid $150 to have it "repaired." What I got back was a refurb with a different serial number. That lasted less than a year and half before it died. Given the price when I bought it, this camera has already cost me close to $800. The repair price that Canon charges will buy a new camera of the same functionality, with full warrentee. They offer an "upgrade" to a newer model, for $220, but that is a refurb with only a six month warrentee. I would prefer that Canon built a quality product that would last at least two years. I would settle for them at least standing behind their products when they die under normal use.

These are one of the few CD-RW's that will actually work in my Marantz CD Recorder. I have had three of them for over 4 years now, and I can still erase them and re-write them. Starting to get a little scratched from use. Maybe your other reviewer doesn't have equipment that is compatible with them.

I can't believe they don't make this any more........2005-01-08

I've had this monitor for at least 2 years, and it's still the best picture ever. It's amazing how swindled everyone's been by the LCD craze, considering how poor a quality the image usually is.
Anyway, I know it's irrelevant now, but since I saw the bad review someone else gave, I just want to point out: the guy was wrong. He probably had it next to a strong magnetic field (maybe it was on the same circuit as his refrigerator or an old television).

Poor Quality, Convergance Problems. Stay Away.......2003-01-03

It looks sleek and isn't as deep as 21" monitors used to be...but poor convergence, fuzzy text and quality problems plague this monitor. If you read lots of the online reviews for the e540 you will find the most common complaint to be the convergence of the monitor. If you set all the red green and blue phosphors to be perfectly aligned in the center of the screen they were horribly misaligned on the corners, particularly on the left side. The result was text that was clear in the center of the screen but very blurry towards the left. Aiding to the problem was that there were 3 vertical convergence controls (top, middle, and bottom) but only 1 horizontal. It seems as if Sony purposely crippled the controls on the lower end monitor so you would be forced for a reason to buy their more expensive line.

About a week into getting the monitor it also started experiencing shaking problems that made it useless. Although it was infrequent, the problem did reappear every few days - even on a different computer (so I rule out a video card problem).

Another negative was the very thin video cable that I think would be prone to interference. Sony took far too many shortcuts on this model. Stay away.

This monitor, well, it sucks. It was a waste of the $600 I spent. The biggest problem is that it's very blurry above 1600x1200 making those modes almost useless (on XP). Attached to my PowerBook it can't handle rates greater than 60Hz above 1600x1200 and it so blurry even at lower resolutions it's unusable.

Second major complaint is the display is flat and lifeless. Colors are washed out and contrast is poor. Forget calibrating it for anything, you are lucky to just have it look decent.

It's a very poor quality 19" display in a 70 pound 21" box. Unless you want a monitor that's big because you have eyesight problems then this isn't the monitor for you.

Would I buy one again? Hell no.

Great Monitor!.......2004-01-12

I was hesitant getting this monitor because although I knew I wanted a 21" screen, I was afraid it would be too massive to fit on my desk (a corner unit). I was also torn between this and the comparable aperture-grill NEC FE2111 which appears to be used by a large number of top gaming PC manufacturers (Alienware, Falcon, etc.).

I've always wanted a Sony and kicked myself last time (6 years ago) I bought a non-aperture grill monitor, so I thought I'd never forgive myself if the NEC FE2111 turned out to be a dud, so I took the plunge.

As I brought the massive box into the house, I was kicking myself--what was I thinking that this huge monitor would fit?

But once I got the monitor on the desk, it fit much more nicely than I ever imagined. The back of the monitor is much more narrow than I ever imagined, allowing the monitor to sit way back into the corner of room--about the same depth as my old 17" monitor.

Wow! I love the image quality too. Bright, clean, crisp. I've only had it for 2 days, but so far I love it!

Great Monitor For Internet, and Gaming.......2003-01-30

I am 15, and i use my pc alot. I used to have a 16' Sony Flat Screen Monitor, but i needed a bigger one for gaming and using the internet. This monitor helped tremendously, and the display is crisp, clear, and refresh rates are FAST! For Example, right now im using 1600 x 1200 and the refresh rate is 85 Hertz. If you use this Monitor, i recommend using 1600 x 1200 because it looks the best, although the monitor can display incredibly higher resolutions. I highly recomend this monitor for someone who wants a BIG monitor, a perfectly flat screen, but wants to avoid the unbearably high prices of LCD monitors the same size.
