Why won't Canon stand behind their product?.......2007-08-24

While the camera looks great, the pictures are sharp and ease of use is attractive....beware the E18 error.

After buying this camera I experienced the E18 error out of the box. The E18 is when the lens locks in the open position for any number of reasons; misuse, sand or dirt, touching the lens while moving and, from what I can tell, no reason at all. I returned the camera for a replacement. The second camera worked for 6 months then, to my surprise...E18 error. I called Canon, sent it back and within a few weeks they repaired it under warranty. Flash forward about a year...E18 error. However, now I have no warranty and Canon wants to charge me $195 to fix what can only be a product defect, not my fault, as I take care of this camera very well.

So instead of sending it in for the price of buying a new camera, I google "E18 error" to see if it is fixable on my own. Surprise! There are entire web pages dedicated to the E18. Wikipedia has a page for the E18 error. There have been thousands of accounts and emails posted from inept and rude Canon service reps and managment (although most people I dealt with were kind, but unhelpful).

After unsuccessfully convincing Canon the onus is on their poor product quality and they should at least fix the camera for me, I gave up my quest and bought a new camera...a Sony, so far so good.

Bottom line: Canon will not stand behind its product. This defect, while not experienced by all, has been experienced by tens of thousands (this fact is from Canon itself). After the warranty is out, they will not help you. They will sell you a refurbished camera for $175....no thanks.

I didn't buy a "disposable" camera, however, that is what Canon is selling. Which is only emphasized by their very established policies in dealing with E18 errors. Buyer beware, and at least do your research.

This is my second identical camera that I've ordered. It's really a great camera, that's why I got a second one for my son.
Even though both are refurbished, no one can tell: they look brand new!
And the price is unbeatable.

searched for weeks for appropriate camera. settled for the canon sd500 when came available locally as never turned on display model at local office supply store. what a great camera. forget all the professional comments about picture edges blurring, color reproduction ablity,etc...this is an excellent, easy to use camera with excellent video capability. it takes excellent regular pictures and videos, but really shines when combined with its underwater casing that worked flawlessly. the clarity of the pictures is easily 200% improved and the ability to take videos that show the fish in motion was incredible. we had another family with us at st. martin and they are buying an sd500 as soon as possible. what a step above any camera i have owned, and the people who market and sell disposable underwater cameras should be run out of business.

I bought this model when they came out.
The best camera I have.
No longer use my camcorder... this will do just fine for DVD or web view.

Don't even hesitate to select this sd-500 model.
You will find the pictures amazingly sharp.
What more can you ask for a small wonder like this?

I use this as my main movie recorder, it's that good.
I do have an expensive Sony camcorder that hardly get used because this baby will do everything I need for internet movies on the website.
It's sharp and bright images will dazzle you.

One thing is strange... The price of this model went up since a few years and the newer models may have more resolution and other features, but this one still beats them all for clarity and color.
Canon don't produce this model anymore (?) and seems like people in the know realize how much better this model was then the new ones.
You can buy a new canon with more resolutions for half price then this older model.

Great Camera.......2007-04-13

This is a very good camera and very easy to use. I have a Nikon D70 and this thing takes night pictures better than my Nikon (I am not a pro hence I may not knwo all my settings). This is also good to capture video, its more compact than your video camera and when you check in, you do not have to take it out like a video camera.

The Panasonic SuperFlat models rival the Sony Wega but sell for 30-40% less. The image quality is indistinguishable. After looking at the 27" Wega, I found that the Panasonic SuperFlat is so much less expensive that I can upgrade to a bigger model. The only question left is whether or not I have enough room for the 32" model in my livingroom.

Opting for a slightly smaller television with top notch quality was perfect for my small living space and desire to still have a "home theater."

When compared picture for picture next to a Sony or a Mitsubishi of the same size, the Panasonic SuperFlat is very similar. It has bright, vivid color and crisp definition. The Panasonic has the edge in cost against a similar Sony Trinitron and Mitsubishi models of any stripe.

The Panasonic CT27SF26 model is the smallest of the SuperFlat product line and lacks the DigitalReady features of the bigger models.

The real beauty of this product shows when incorporated with a DVD player. With 700 lines of resolution, the picture is impeccable over just any other run of the mill 27"-36" television including Panasonic's value conscious Panablack series.

Compared side by side with Sony Trinitron and Vega systems, the Panasonic's picture is just as sharp and just as bright for much less money. especially when the background is white. Very high eye strain at any refresh rate, guess due to the ghost image problem (eyes try to get a better focus on an unfocused screen).

I don't personally own this monitor, I have seen it, and it is an impressive monitor. The person who rated this monitor so poorly down there who said that .24 dpi is not acceptable obviously is missing some details, because I've always heard that the human eye doesn't distinguish between anything less than .25dpi....

I have heard similar complaints about customer service from owner's of Sony monitors on other websites, so if by chance your monitor does have a problem, you may be without a monitor for a couple weeks while sony fixes it.....

A bit pricey, but a great value.......2001-11-04

My beloved six year old NEC 21" monitor was finally giving up the ghost. We had spent so much quality time together. It started with me in a Mac only environment. It moved with me to PC and Unix machines. I dreaded the task of finding another display with the same quality, and doing so on a budget much smaller than the one six years ago.

After a few weeks with the G400 I'm now thrilled that the old monitor is gone. Yes, it's a 19", not a 21"... I can't tell. The higher scan rates and overall quality makes for a much sharper display at screen resolutions higher than I would ever attempt on my late monitor. Screen flicker is modest at even high resolutions (1600x1200)

The truly flat display tube was a bit odd a first. Having worked with curves screens all my life I'd adapted to their distortions. The display is crisp and flat to the very edges of the tube. Now, going back to standard curved displays is jarring.

The video control (centering, contrast, brightness, etc.) takes some experimentation and is probably the weakest piece of plastic on the monitor. But after your initial setup you shouldn't need to use it often.

Since I work with multiple machines the dual video inputs with a switch located on the front of the display was a big plus. The machine also includes a Mac adapter. Note: the monitor comes with one video cable. If you're attaching another machine (PC or Mac) you will need another.

Anyone planning on a 21" display might wish to consider saving themselves a significant amount of money with the G400. Because size isn't everything. :)

Bad serivice, high price and DPI.......2001-05-31

I've purchased this monitor in January 2001. My opinion is that:

.24 dpi is not acceptable dot pitch (images are 'grainy' with higher dpi). .24 dpi is VISIBLE even if all you plan to do is word processing. Of course if you are switching from a .28 dpi 14" monitor G400 would look to you as a technical marvel.

Warranty warning for this unit:

After a few hours of troubleshooting the monitor Sony tech support informed me that the monitor isn't properly shielded and that I'll have to send the monitor to them for repair. Sony sent me ...a defective unit and I was forced to pay for shipping this 68 pound monitor to TX! and that wasn't enough, the monitor wasn't replaced! Instead they've sent me 'repaired' unit... after 3 weeks!

We had 2 monitors going bad before at our company and ViewSonic, Toshiba ... sent us replacments (after we returned the dead monitors), no questions asked. I would expect similar if not better service from the respectable company like Sony.

Don't buy this monitor!

Fantastic Sony quality!.......2001-03-23

I've spent weeks examining every high-end 19" monitor I could get my hands on. I've talked to the manufacturers directly, I've poured over Internet reviews, I've put monitors on several different machines with different video cards in different lighting situations, etc, etc, etc...

The only thing I don't understand is why there's even any question which is the best! Sony is without a doubt better than NEC, Mitsubishi, LG, etc, etc... All aperture-grille monitors have problems with vertical "smudginess" on fine text detail, but Sony's is so minimal it's unnoticeable. All other monitors were very blurry and fuzzy compared to the text clarity on the Sony. Also the colors are uniform, saturated, and "silky" compared to other monitors - especially shadow mask monitors.
