I thought the photos would be sharper.......2002-08-03

It's a beautifully made little camera but it just hasn't produced very sharp photos so far. I wanted a film camera since I was tired of the images I was getting out of my Nikon 950 (digital = fuzzy pictures faster). The colors from the Sureshot76 are excellent and it's just so darn cute I have a hard time saying anything critical about it, but looking at images I'd taken with an old, cheap 35mm camera with an old, cheap 55mm lens I'd rather drag around a "real" camera than have to settle for images that really look as if they'd been taken with a disposable camera. But for a grandma-point-and-shoot camera it's dandy, I'll give it to my wife, it's her speed.

Worked well for 1 year........2002-02-03

My wife and I bought this camera because it was simple to use and picture quality was good. That was until it stopped working properly. Now the zoom sticks, sometimes the lense will not close at all and the object in the viewfinder will not zoom as the lense does. It was purchaes in January 2001 and the warranty is now up. Not Happy!

A correction.......2001-08-02

I wrote a lengthy review of this camera recently and need to correct an error.

In my earlier review, I said that the green LED focus indicator light would flash at four times per second under low-light conditions.

I meant to say that it is actually the proximity detector. The minimum shooting distance for the lens is 2/3 of a meter, about two feet, so this is as close as you can get. If you're closer than that, the light will flash at you.

The light also flashes much faster, at 16 times per second, as a camera shake warning. It also lights when autofocus has been achieved, and when the flash is fully recharged. So considering this is a four-function indicator, this is a pretty hard-working little LED!

The other thing I wasn't able to determine in my last review is whether the camera had passive or active autofocus. The camera does have active autofocus, which uses an infrared beam.

Anyway, I have already run the free roll of film I got with the camera thru it and the photos are nice and sharp. This looks to be an excellent little point and shoot to take with you anywhere.

Good little point and shoot.......2001-07-31

I wrote a previous review of this camera, but I intended to give it a 5-star rating instead of 4 stars, so I wanted to correct that here.

This camera was one of the possible gift choices for my 10-year anniversary gift at my company. So I decided to give it a try. The only other small point and shoot camera I have is a Fuji Tiara 1000, which has a fixed lens and is APS format, whereas this camera is a 2X 38-76mm lens and is 35 mm.

I got a free roll of ASA 100 Kodak Gold (12 frames) film so I ran it through the camera over the weekend, and was pleased with the results.

The camera's short zoom lens runs from F4.2-F7.8, and has a maximum 1/500th of a sec. shutter speed, pretty standard for a point and shoot camera in the $100-$200 range. You can find some that are 1/700th, but not too many. The little Contax point and shoots go up to at least 1/1000th of a sec., and my Rollei QZ35W has an amazing 1/8000th of a second maximum shutter speed, but this camera is ten times as expensive as your typical point and shoot model and weighs almost 2 pounds, so it's a tank, and the Contax cameras, although not as high as the Rollei, are still pretty pricey.

But getting back to the Canon Sureshot. The photos look good and are very sharp. I tried shooting photos under bright sunlight with a very contrasty subject, and also the next day it was quite overcast and so I took somemore photos then too. Both sets of prints look nice and sharp. I was a little worried about the ASA 100 film shooting on a foggy day. I suspect the shutter speed wasn't more than 1/60th of a second, but I concentrated on trying to minimize camera shake when I took the shots, since I wanted to test the sharpness of the lens.

Anyway, it looks like I managed it and the photos looked good.

Another nice thing the camera has is a multi-function green LED focus indicator light. But it also does 2 other cool things. It flashes at 12 times per second when it thinks camera shake might be a problem, and at 4 times per second when the light is too low. I suspect the shake indicator actually is telling you about a slow shutter speed that might be affected by camera shake, rather than actively detecting any hand movement, such as video camcorders are able to do, and cancel it out.

The autofocus system is able to handle situations where you have subjects or people in the foreground but the focal frame of the camera is actually centered on the background, much further away. Another nice feature. I was not able to determine from the manual whether it has active or passive autofocus, however. It's better to have passive autofocus. Active autofocus uses an infrared beam, and this can cause problems when trying to shoot thru the window of a car. The infrared beam will bounce off the glass and screw up the focus, unless there is a setting to disable it.

With active autofocus the camera is usually sensitive to vertical lines. However, this can sometimes cause a problem with scenes that lack strong verticals. It would be nice to know what the Sureshot has but the manual just says it has AiAF--artificially intelligent autofocus.

So far this looks to be a good little camera at an attractive price. About the only downside to it is that it isn't as small as some of the more compact point and shoots; however, these usually cost much more money, such as the Minolta 125 Freedom Zoom, which is a nice camera but is much more expensive. Also, many people will perhaps want a longer zoom capability around 3X or so, but I actually prefer not to have anything that extreme because there are too many optical comprises that have to be made in terms of the sharpness of the lens and other optical problems. I understand that some of the newer point and shoot zoom models, such as the new Nikon 125 and the Minolta 125 Freedom Zoom, are incorporating asperical plastic elements, which have done a lot to address this issue, but not having tested them myself yet, I'll stick to the 2X-3X range for now.

One final thing to consider with point and shoots with datebacks like this one, is that many of them will default the dateback feature back to on when you change the film. Since I've only run the one test roll thru so far I don't know how this particular camera will respond, but probably most of them will do that. So remember to check every time you change the roll if it does. If it doesn't, you have one of the few that don't and you're home free.

Also, since it prints the time and date on the lower right corner in a yellowish font, this means you need to be careful about photographing scenes with strong yellow colors in this area, since it may obscure the dateback "imprint."

The camera comes with a better than average camera bag with a main compartment more than big enough for the camera itself, and a smaller external pocket big enough to hold a couple of extra rolls of film. Altogether a nice little camera, especially considering in my case it was free!

SB-1, SMOOTH AND ELEGANT.......2004-08-10

I use a pair of NHT SB-1's in my 10'x12' den with a Polk PSW202 sub and a JVC 100w receiver/dvd combo. I have no rear or center speakers for now and I may never add them. This combination of speakers is just perfect for this sized room. The SB-1's offer smooth, clean response of the mids and highs (you will need a sub if they are your fronts) and their small size makes them easy to place. They offer detailed and sparkling reproduction of all kinds of jazz and classical music and the power of Metallica. For a small room, these are great speakers.

Is your hard drive bursting at the seams? If you're pushing maximum capacity and need to add another hard drive, check out Maxtor's 11.5-GB 3.5-inch EIDE Ultra-DMA/33.3 hard drive kit, which will give you more than enough room to grow.

The kit ships with an installation guide, MaxBlast Plus installation software, mounting screws, an IDE interface cable, and 5.25-inch mounting brackets for installing the drive in a 5.25-inch bay mount. The step-by-step instructions walk you effortlessly through the intimidating process of installing the drive; we had ours set up in less than 30 minutes.

We installed the drive in a 3.5-inch bay as the secondary parent to our primary Fujitsu hard drive. The drive comes configured as a parent device, but you can configure it to be a child device or use the cable select with the included jumpers. We connected a free power cable to the drive and an IDE interface cable from the drive to the secondary IDE slot. Once all cables were connected, we rebooted our computer.

We ran the setup BIOS program and configured our drives in a matter of minutes. We then rebooted the system to the MaxBlast software, which walked us through configuration and partitioning of the drive. Take note that if your system BIOS is pre-1997, it may not see partitions greater than two GB.

With rotational speeds of 5,400 RPM, access speeds of nine milliseconds and an Ultra DMA interface, the 11.5-GB drive is a first-rate performer and certainly a great addition to any computer in need of serious storage.

About the best IDE HD.......1999-11-21

This hast to be the best EIDE HD on the market. Not size-wise, but speed wise. This is a red hot hard drive! I really don't have anything to say bad about it yet. When ever Windows would crash my old hard drive would have an error or two. Not ONE on the Maxtor.

Maxtor is good.......1999-11-18

This is a rebuttal of the folks at the bottom. i work in the IT industry and have used several Maxtor drives. They are still going strong and have been for at least a couple of years. Western Digital on the other hand, has given me all kinds of problems. My girlfriend's computer is on it fourth WD drive in a year and a half. I am on my second in 9 months. Western Digital costs more and gives less. Go with a Maxtor or Seagate.

This is a great drive at 33.3 and 5400 rpm. This is perfect for those that want additional space but don't want to pay for Ultra 66 drives and the card needed to run at those speed.

This drive was perfect for my network server. I am using the drive as an on-line back-up device. You can't beat the Price Per GB, under $11.30! That's almost 1 Cent per MB! Plus, random access makes this a better option than tape for REAL TIME on-line back-up. If you have a sub 233MHz machine, this is a great choice. (be careful of BIOS limitations). Check out the Maxtor web site for a look at their high speed, high capacity drives. They have announced a 40.9GB drive and are shipping a 36GB. I guess that's why they call themselves MAXsTOReage!

There are additional things to buy to use this!! Beware!!.......2003-01-16

We purchased this set of radios for a Christmas present, and based on the description provided...the impression is that "everything's included", right? Wrong. We did receive the radios, and the rechargeable batteries and chargers were in a seperate little box, but thrown in with the radios in the Amazon box. (Should have known something was not right when we saw that) We inserted the batteries, and then immediately tried to hook them up to the chargers, only to find out the chargers are NOT compatible with the radios. They don't fit! We called Midland directly to find out if we were doing something wrong...and they informed us that the chargers included with this set only work if you BUY MORE DEVICES TO PLUG THEM INTO!!! They also indicated that they can only assume that Amazon does not know this and is selling it all as a package. Unless you plan on going out and spending more money on another accessory, stay away from this particular "deal". Waste of money and time. Amazon did issue us a refund...so kudos to them for that--but more importantly I think they need to revise or remove this item as it is very deceiving.

I took my chance on gettings these radios hopeing that they
would surely have the problem fixed buy now. I received them today and had forgot about the reviews about the missing adapters until I tried to charge them. Sure hope they get the problem fixed.

I too was missing the adapters. While they have pointed me to Midland I don't think I should have to be the one to talk to them and solve this. If this hadn't happened before, I would be more understanding, but obviously from the last poster's comments... it has... more than once.

This definately puts a ding in my otherwise unblemished dealings with amazon over the last 4 years.

Be warned that if you get this set, you may have one more step before they will work.

I give this product five stars without having even tried it. I got it a few days ago, and plugged in the wall chargers to the radios, in the only holes where the plugs would fit. After literally 3 days of "charging", I still couldn't get the displays up or make calls. I just phoned Midland about it, and their tech asked me right away just *where* I was plugging in the chargers. When I told him, he asked if I'd gotten the set from Amazon. Yes, so? "You are the second customer who's called who didn't get the needed 18301 adapters to go on the ends of the plugs so they can fit into the smaller of the two ports". Midland is shipping me 2 of them free of charge (otherwise $4.95 each plus s&h), so the company gets props from me. Amazon may well be shipping the adapters with some or most of these sets, but this time they didn't. Caveat emptor!

Excellent, Fast, Great for non-experts.......2005-05-14

Pros:

This camera has a 12x Optical (I don't use the digital but it is supposed to take you up to 36x or so--don't use digital zoom--there's no need with a 12x optical zoom. It has image stablization which you can really tell a difference. If you're zooming all the way then use a tripod for the best clarity.

This camera starts up quickly (about 2 seconds)

After a USB link then your camera is detected as Removable Storage. You can then copy any file (as long as it fits on your SD card).

There are two settings for rapid shutters (5 per sec and 2 per sec) up to 5 or 6 pictures at a time.

Night Shot (use a tripod) Take a picture with a flash at night then use this setting to get the subject with the flash and then the shutter stays open to get dim background light.

Turn flash on, off, auto, and red-eye.

Timer 10, 5, 2 seconds

View thumbnails of pictures, zoom in/out

Comes with a lense hood to prevent sun spots on the lense.

Automatic shutter adjustments

Record voice with pictures (I've never used this feature so I can't really promote it much)

Rechargable Battery (you may want to get an extra one for quick swaps) The battery lasts quite a few days with only periodic usage and is quickly charged.

Also, set it to night-shot and put the flash down to get a long shutter for interesting night shots (as long as the subject isn't moving)

Cons:

Format for video is 320x320 Apple MOV format.

You can't zoom when your taking a movie.

Only 2 Mega Pixels (I've found it is fine for me. I'd like to try something bigger sometime; but, I've printed pictures at 8"x10" and I thought they looked pretty good--experts might disagree but they haven't seen my printer... :(
