Love it!.......2007-06-11
Major malfunction issues!.......2004-04-13
Crisp, clear photos.......2003-08-26
The photo quality is excellent, particularly for portraits (this camera takes especially nice photos of the 'I've got my arm around my friend and am holding the camera to take a picture of the two of us' variety). Although the zoom is long, there is very little distortion, and photos are always crisp.
Unlike one of the other reviewers, I have found quity a bit of red-eye when I use the flash, and it sometimes take the camera a second to 'auto-focus.' But those are my only complaints.
My new best Friend.......2002-10-29
Like other cameras, it has imperfections. Here's what I found:
*Although I had no trouble with red-eye WHATSOEVER, a few of the pictures I took indoors had glare over some peoples' eyes.
* Flash is only good for images up to about 7 feet away in the dark( i.e. darkest night time).
*what I saw was not always what i got: when i looked through the lens I saw a big, beautiful christmas tree. When I looked at the photograph, I daw the bottom of it. Maybe I need to read the manual some more to learn how to avoid this.
The good outweighs the bad by so much, the bad is insignificant unless compared to an SLR.
* no redeye
*In half-descent lighting, photos turned out with quality of perfect potraits- no kidding. The images appear literally as I saw them through my own eyes
* the camera adjusts to new lighting in an instant
*the camera has an all-metal shell- very durable
* the battery has almost full life although I have shot 5 rolls of film and took my sweet time making each photo, leaving the camera on for a significant amount of time often
* it looks very cool and unique, and has caption and date-printing options and more altogether than I am familiar with, not to mention a nice display screen that reveals battery power, number of photos taken with the present roll of film and the mode it is in
* the zoom is FABULOUS ( not slow or noisy)
* This camera is uncomplicated to use and this is an extroardinary price. No doubt this is the best camera for this price.
* takes fantastic pictures of moving objects. WOW!
* for people who, like me, don't like manuals, you can switch it on automode and and use the camera without ever peeping at the manual( as i did the first few months i had the camera). All you have to do is zoom for desired view, press shutter button down halfway first to adjust the camera to the lighting. Then, CLICK! Beautiful..............
This is the best Christmas present I have ever gotten. NO matter how high your expectations from this camera are, I think it will at least meet them.
Best choice in this price range.......2001-11-24
Pros>
1. Solid styling, feel and "retro" Look. Correct size for a point and shoot.
2. 7 Preset modes (macro, portrait, action, spot, night, auto and personal) with a big and easy dial to choose between them - No more fiddling with small buttons.
3. Small buttons for people who like to fiddle with small buttons - you can personalize your picture taking and make the camera "remember" it.
4. Active as well as passive autofocus (active autofocus doesnt work on subjects more than 20 feet away. Passive autofocus doesnt work well in low light and low contrast. Together they must make a difference). Timer so you too can be in the picture.
5. Portrait and macro modes are simply amazing! If you are thinking of a camera just for portraits and closeup shots, forget other cameras. Buy this.
6. Focussing is the fastest among the cameras I have handled. Its almost instant.
This beauty however has its cons too
Cons>
1. Night mode *NEEDS* a tripod. However with a tripod results are breathtaking.
2. The pop out flash needs some getting used to. I found myself obstructing it many times.
3. The battery cover is weird. you have to be careful with it.
4. The lens protection (though it has not caused problems for me) could have been a bit better.
5. The zoom buttons are okay - but can be better designed.
The reason working against Olympus were - Olympus has flaky zoom mechanism. Canon's zoom motor and mechanism are solid - the telescoping portion is made of metal. Olympus has slow focussing when compared to Canon. The Viewfinder in olympus is dim and tiny - though subsequent models have improved it.
The pros of Olympus are - better placed flash. Solid clamshell design that protects the lens as well as makes the camera splashproof. Canon's lens cover though adequate is not as good as the clamshell.
To sum up - if you need zoom, active as well as passive autofocus, preset modes for the beginner, good viewfinder, self timer, fast focusing, good feel, styling and size for *THIS* price - you cannot go wrong with this camera.

NXG Technology NX-50C 2-Way In-Ceiling Speakers with Pivoting Tweeter and 5.25" Woofer (White, Pair)
Manufacturer: NXG TECHNOLOGY ProductGroup: CE Binding: Electronics Product Features:
ASIN: B00009W5FX |
Amazon.com Product Description
NXG Technology's 2-way NX-50C in-ceiling speakers are ideal for anyone seeking discreet, quality sound for music or movies. Shipped as a pair, the speakers are ready-made for stereo or left/right surround-sound applications. They come with a mounting template and are finished in white to match most ceilings. You can paint the grilles and frames, too. Each NX-50C is outfitted with a 5.25-inch, mica-filled, polycarbonate cone woofer with a durable rubber surround. For a tweeter, both speakers use a pivoting .5-inch liquid-cooled, titanium-dome tweeter with a neodymium magnet. The tweeters even pivot so you can focus their output toward a desired listening area.
With in-ceiling speakers, the ceiling and the space behind it actually serve as a speaker cabinet, resonating with lower (bass) frequencies that would be lost without the focusing a cabinet provides. As such, the speaker depth is just 3 inches, yet they still deliver an impressive 65 to 21,000 Hz frequency response. Mounted flush to the ceiling, they occupy absolutely no shelf space. This discreet, compact format is perfect for applications where traditional speakers would be impractical or impossible--or simply unsightly.
The speakers' sensitivity is rated at 90 dB (1 watt @ 1 meter), which means they're easily driven; NXG recommends use with integrated amplifiers or surround receivers up to 60 watts (maximum) per channel. The speakers sound great on their own, but you can also use them as secondary speakers to bring music from your living-room system to additional rooms in the house.
NXG recommends using a minimum of 16-gauge speaker wire for all installations, keeping in mind that gauge decreases as the wire thickens (i.e. 14-gauge wire is thicker than 16-gauge wire).
What's in the Box
Two speakers with removable grille and self-contained mounting clamps, a mounting template, and a user's manual with warranty information.
Note: Tools required for installation include a drill and bits, a stud finder, a utility knife or drywall saw, a level, wire cutter/strippers, and speaker wire or speaker cable (all sold separately).

Panasonic DVD-K510 DVD Player
Manufacturer: Panasonic ProductGroup: CE Binding: Electronics Accessories: Product Features:
ASIN: B00000J44A |
Product Description
This Panasonic DVD player carries over the advanced performance features for the highest picture and sound quality. But The DVD-K510 carries more than impressive sound and video; it also carries a great tune. That's because it has a 5-channel Dolby Digital Karaoke format for the ultimate in karaoke entertainment. Sing along with just the music for a captivating solo performance, or select the virtual duet mode and belt out a couple of tunes with popular selection of prerecorded vocals. Add a 10-bit video D/A converter and DTS digital out and Dolby digital out and you've got one very impressive DVD player. This player features 5-Speed Smooth Motion Scan & Slow, Auto Switching Field/Frame Still, and Still and Step Forward functions. Further contributing to its performance is Virtual Surround Sound (VSS) for an outstanding sound quality.Amazon.com Review
Panasonic's feature-packed DVD-K510 DVD-Video player is a wonder of modern digital engineering and a must for any karaoke enthusiast. If you're not a Carpenters or Michael Jackson wannabe, however, you'll have to think carefully about this purchase. While the DVD-K510 has an S-Video output and two composite-video connectors, it does not have component video outputs for a higher-quality picture through a compatible monitor--something most DVD players in this price range offer. Clearly, what you're paying for here is the karaoke setup--but what a setup it is!The DVD-K510 features full-blooded Dolby Digital karaoke, which comes with Virtual Duet, Guide Melody on/off, two front-panel microphone inputs with independent level controls, echo-level control, voice changer, and--the best part--13-step digital key control, which lets you transpose the key without altering the tempo. Another excellent feature is that the unit doesn't restrict you to just playing karaoke discs. The front-panel "mic control" input to coordinate start cues is also convenient.
The more traditional DVD functions are also here: Chapter/track skip and search, slow motion, still-frame, frame-advance, auto power-off, Resume Play, as well as less-common capabilities like a favorites-oriented marker function, scrolling text display, virtual surround sound (designed for spacious two-channel sound), and the inclusion of a shuttle wheel for hands-on searching.
In keeping with the DVD-K510's karaoke bent, the player's audio performance is very good, offering state-of-the-art 24-bit/96kHz digital-to-analog decoding through the RCA analog outputs.

Wireless headphones have come a long way. To discover just how far, you'll have to hear Sennheiser's brilliant RS 6-9 wireless system, a headphone so good you'll wish it actually came with a wire so you wouldn't have to use a battery just to listen to it.The heart of the system is the headphone receiver, a sturdy plastic band lined with an adjustable cushioning band. The 4-inch padded ear cups rest against and not over your ears, joined to the headband in pivot sockets that permit easy angling to fit your head. The other piece central to the RS 6-9 is the FM transmitter, a tiny device you hook up to both an electric outlet and your sound source, then essentially forget about.
The headset runs on a single "accuplug" rechargeable battery, not the sort of thing you pick up at your convenience store. The RS 6-9 comes with one, but be careful: it only runs for three hours at a spell, and if you let it run completely flat you won't be able to recharge it. The battery comes charged and fitted in the headset's right earpiece, just above the conveniently placed volume/on/off switch. Sennheiser strongly recommends 24 hours' charging time before first use, however, so after you've checked to hear that the RS 6-9 works, be sure to put that battery right in the charger! The transmitter offers two charging slots in case you want to stock up.
The transmitter comes with an input cable that plugs into any stereo analog miniplug or 0.25-inch headphone jack, so you can easily feed it audio from your tuner, CD player, DVD player, cassette deck, minidisc, television--you name it, so long as you have a headphone jack on either the source or on your receiver, preamp, or integrated amplifier. We'd prefer a choice between using headphone outputs or RCA jacks, but in an either/or situation, we feel the headphone connection offered here is most conducive to simple setups.
Sennheiser recommends not exceeding 100 meters (about 250 feet) in listening range, and we occasionally experienced interference--similar to FM radio static--at shorter distances, depending on the room. Metal parts, such as those in concrete construction or wall coverings, will reflect radio waves, whereas the audio signal passes unobstructed through wood, plaster, and (apparently) people. Different channels (1-3) permit use of multiple headsets in the same house.
Battery and transmission issues aside, setting up and enjoying the RS 6-9 is really quite simple, requiring little effort to plug in, set the transmission channel, and crank up the tunes. Don't crank the level too high, though--your ears will thank you for it later.
A loudness warning is especially pertinent for this headset since, to our delight, the sound is so good. Rather than attempting to eke the last bit of bass from every sound that rides the airwaves in, this headset presents sound in a way that is nothing if not incredibly musical, letting the music--whether classical, jazz, folk, or punk rock--speak for itself in pure, unfatiguing tones. FM wireless transmission should sound about like good FM radio--it's the same process, after all--but we've never heard FM begin to approach the clarity, dynamic punch, or ease heard from the RS 6-9.
For untethered listening in the garden, around the house, and after others have gone to bed, the RS 6-9 is as trouble-free and capable as many wireless headphones out there. But when it comes to warm and natural sound quality in a wireless setup, this Sennheiser model knows no equal. --Michael Mikesell

Great pair of phones, with few cons........2001-07-26
Let's start with clarity. A review really isn't indictative of how good these headphones make music sound. I've listened to music (like most people) all my life, and when you put on a pair of headphones and you hear new things in songs you've known for years, that's really saying something about the clarity. Not having tried a pair of Sennheiser's before, I really was suprised by the sound quality - everything is crisp, the bass comes through deep and pounding, but best of all - no distortion.
Portability. I was a tad dissapointed by the fact that when I got more than about 20-30 metres away I got a bit of static, but it quite often depends what is around where you live. Example: at my old house, it worked great up to about 70-100 metres where it trailed off in quality, but at my residential college (lots of metal) it doesn't work well beyond 15-25 metres. Perhaps not so good for people in apartments.
Ease-of-use: Plug the simple cables in, charge the battery, plug it into the headphones, tune and you're away. Fantastic. Nothing more to say....except buy two batteries - you'll listen so much on these heaphones that you'll need them.
Overall a wonderful unit, as long as you don't live in an apartment.
Good sound but flawed headset receiver.......2000-07-07
I finally got so frustrated that I simply ripped the headphones apart so I wouldn't be tempted to put up with them any longer.
If you buy these, get some extra batteries. The battery only lasts about 3 to 4 hours and takes something like 10 hours to fully recharge. The transmitter has two charging stations, so I got three batteries (one in the phones) and rotated them.
I was always a bit annoyed at having to tune the receiver on a battery swap, and, as the battery drains, the receiver drifts off frequency, so you have to adjust it some more.
I much prefer the Sony MDR-IF system; the IF-610 phones last much longer on a single charge (though the downside is that the non-removable battery must be charged in place and the phones are unusable during recharge). But as an infrared system, there's no tuning and no drifting, and the enclosure-style phones provide even better sound. It doesn't work through walls like the 6-9 does, though.
Freedom and Clarity.......2000-06-14
