Good little miniDV camcorder.......2006-01-05

ZR400 is a good miniDV camera with many options. It's not overloaded with too many manual control options, but it has just enough feature tweak (such as shutter speed, aperture size tweak) and a variety of automated modes to satisfy those few who would like a bit more refinement on casual vacation videos. It does not have mic input or hotshoe for external lighting connections, so it is definitely for casual vacation video and good lighting shooting.
The size of the camera is one of its major attractions for me. The camera is just the right size to be held with one hand without feeling too small, while it's small enough to fit in large pockets and easily slips into any kind of bag of decent size. Under normal day light and indoor lighting conditions, the colors and video quality are excellent. Under candle lighting or lighting with shaded lamps, the noise is visible in the video, but not overwhelming. The color tones are still good even under poor lighting. At this price range for video cameras, the noise performance is about average. However, for casual viwers, this is not an issue.
The only draw back maybe the bottom loading mechnism for the miniDV tape. Like almost all the miniDV loading mechnisms, the system works a bit finicky. But not too distracting as long as you follow the instruction in the manual. Bottom loading on the camera makes changing tape while using tripods a bit more complicated than need to, but that's not a big deal.
Image stablizing works well even at the very long end of the zoom, I think the zoom range and the electronic stablizing in ZR400 works well as a combination, the long end is long enough for almost all cases while stablization is still good. Camera with longer zoom will suffer from dizzying camera shake even with digital stablization. So the ZR400 has just the right zoom ragne for its electronic stablization capabilities. Wide angle adaptor make the field of view acceptable for wide angle shots, but it's a bit cumbersome to have to put on a wide angle adaptor. It's no big deal, but I just wish the optical zoom lens would be wide enough on its own.
ZR400 takes SD cards for digital still photos and digital M-jpeg vidoes. I see little merit in using the jerky M-jpeg video when the high quality miniDV is readily available at hand. The still pictures are capture at about 1 meg pixels. It's OK for quick snap shot. Any cheap dedicated point and shoot digital still camera will put the still images to shame, but this feature is more of a bonus anyway. DO NOT BUY THIS for still image use, you will be disappointed.
Note, there're NO (note NONE) DV editing software that comes with the camera, so you will need something like Adobe Premiere Element or Ulead Video Studio and firewire on your PC to transfer the DV from the camera to your computer. Photo organizing and editing software comes in the package. Since I have photoshop, I never really paid too much attention to those. Mac guys are lucky they have iMovie, the windows movie maker is really too simplistic for most uses.
Canon should included a battery charger with this model instead forcing the battery charging be done with the camcorder plugged in. A separate battery charger is available for a charge from Canon. Battery life is not a problem, since I normally use video very sparingly. The battery came with the camera last about 1.5 hours shooting time, enough to shoot a full miniDV tape in SP with reviewing and tweaking or a full tape in LP (which I never use). Many high capacity batteries are available for Canon ZR models from a variety of vendors for reasonable prices. I have one that will last 4 hours for about $50.

Great second choice.......2005-08-15

My intention when I was finally ready to purchase a camcorder was the Optura 85. I had picked it over the ZR 400 for the accessory shoe and flash. However, given that our vacation was a week away, the Optura would not have been shipped until well after we returned.

We took the ZR 400 on our trip to Disney World and it performed very well. Outdoor video was great. Indoors it performed quite well. In the Playhouse Disney show it adjusted well and captured the show with great resolution and focus.

I was also looking for a camcorder that could do analog-digital conversion and this function has been excellent.

It only looses a star for a touchy on/off switch. I had it in a camera bag with my digital camera and somehow it got turned on in the bag. I captured great audio of the "It's a Small World Ride," but no video.

This has been a great DVD player. Our old one had problems playing rental DVD's but since we got this DVD we have had no problems even with DVD's that looked questionalbe wheather or not they would play. I would highly recommend this item.

I bought this Unit for $78.00. I purchased it because I needed something to play my DVD-Ram disc that I record from my Toshiba DVD recorder. The picture from this unit is awesome. If you can use the componet hook-ups I highly recommened you do so. I have a Panasonic 5 disc changer and the remotes are interchangebale. This is a very easy unit to use. If you do use the component jacks and have a reciever that you run your sound to you will have to purchase a set of connectores to run from the player to the receiver as it doesn't come with these. That is the only negative I found. It is compatible with -Ram, -R/RW, and +R/Rw. Buy this unit and enjoy!

Add me to the set of users who were delighted with the player's functionality... until its demise at the age of only 18 months, with the classic H07 error.
I used to hold the Panasonic brand in high regard, but it'll be a while before I buy their products again.

I purchased this DVD player brand new at Circuit City a couple of weeks ago. I'm partial to Panasonic and Technic products. I've always had good luck with them. Just to make sure, I did a search on Consumer Reports and they give this player an Excellent rating. First of all, I don't see why anyone would pay more than $100 for a DVD player. They've got these things down to science and the price should only continue to come down. With the S27 you definitely get your money's worth and then some. The unit and remote control are very easy to use. I've got it hooked up through a Technics receiver, Panasonic television and Bose Acoustimass 15 speakers. The picture and sound are crystal. Highly recommended!

Excellent Buy.......2007-09-21

I bought two of these for myself and my husband because we have a baby and live in an apartment, and we wanted to be able to watch tv without making too much noise. The reception is excellent, there is no hissing noise that I read some other reviewers mention. It is actually very clear with no interference. However, when we played around with the tuner, we were able to listin to out neighbor's phone conversation. Overall, it is a great product for the price.

We bought a new HDTV earlier this year with more hookups than we knew what to do with. However our new "toy" can get very loud as my son plays video games or my husband watches Letterman late at night. NOT ANY MORE! With the Sennheiser Rs120 the boys can play and I can sleep! And the sound quality is remarkable, the lack of static is impressive, and BLAH BLAH BLAH... that's my husbands comments. As for me I just care about the rest that I can finally get, for as you know, we domestic goddesses must get our beauty sleep.

Comfortable and convenient.......2007-09-20

We're using as many other people do: to watch TV while not bothering other people in the house. We purchased two of them, and for the most part they are very good.

Pros:
- Very comfortable. Ear muffs are a comfortable cloth design, not plastic or foam. Can wear for hours with no problem, unlike others I've tried. Adjustable band doesn't slip while wearing.
- Good (but not perfect) sound. Good stereo, very clear, easily loud enough. Open-air design means I can still hear things in room relatively well, which is good for holding a conversation -- while wearing the headsets -- without yelling.
- Convenient charging. The transmitter/base station is also the charger. Hanging them on the wire hanger of the base charges the headphones (there are two metal strips on the underside of the headband which make contact with the wire hanger). Nice not to have to plug/un-plug a charger, and then have to find where to lay down the headphones so they don't get damaged or look like a mess. The Senheiser solution is very nice.
- Good battery life. I've yet to run out of a charge, even during long periods of use (a full day).

Cons:
- When audio feeding the base stations is very very low or muted for a couple of minutes, the base stations automatically stop transmitting. This has the effect of the headsets going to just static noise at that point, which can be disconcerting.
- The volume and tuning dials on the side of the headphone are very near one another and feel the same, so easy to be untuning the headphones when intending to adjust the volume instead.

Great headphones in certain environments.......2007-09-17

I purchased these headphones to use at my office. Unfortunately I was unable to use them due to interference. I think the source of the interference was fluorescent lights. I was also able to pick up some cell phone conversations. I took the headphones home and they worked like a champ. They have great range, long battery life and are very simple to use.
I would recommend if you plan on using at home.

This is a wonderful aid to better hearing of TV without a mess of wires and blaring audio. Neat , attractive stand and comfortable earpieces make it a must for anyone hard of hearing. Great value!
