Improving on an original can be a daunting task. Canon has succeeded quite well, thank you. The ZR45MC is the successor to the ZR25MC. Canon increased the optical zoom to 18x--the digital now sits at 360x--and added an analog pass-through port. Although the ZR line featured analog-in for dubbing your movies to MiniDV, the new pass-through port allows you to go straight to the computer, eliminating a possibly cumbersome step.

The ZR45MC also has a lot of the same features that made the original a lot of fun. A 2.5-inch LCD is swivel-mounted, permitting the shooter to use the camera at odd angles. Various digital effects and autoexposure modes help ensure your footage turns out well. The digital still mode makes a return, letting you capture 640 x 480 stills onto an included 8 MB MMC.

Finally, Canon threw in a low-light color-shooting mode that makes the ZR45MC that much more attractive.

Read me! Important.......2007-08-25

Giving my unbiased opinion: I am an adult and i know my way around technology. I owned other canon products before from powershot cameras to this ZR45MC. I've had this since early 2002 and I've used it for many things, graduations etc.... I just recently had problems.

first, GOOD: If you're not going for pro quality, technically superior lines this and pixels that....the video is pretty good in my honest opinion. I just used it on a trip to Boston and used it for whale watching and I was quite satisfied. The video was clear, crisp and colorful. It was cloudy and darker when we were out at sea and the video was still good, even after the whale spit out on us... yum. The aqaurium was even darker, still good. I avg anywhere from 1+hr to 2hrs on tapes. I read many reviews on the buzzing noise and I've yet to hear it. Perhaps i wasn't in a super quiet room but even though my videos had some quiet time in them i really didn't notice. The sound it does record is pretty clear. I bought a DVD-R recorder and transfered them immediately over to DVD and they transfer beautifully. It has many features like an adjustment lever by the eye piece to better meet with your eye (which is a plus since i have an extended battery and it sticks out a bit more but no struggles with the eyepiece extended-comfy). You can use the supplied AV cables or the not included S-cable but the supplied AV transfers just fine. It's been good with power consumption on my extended battery (digital concepts lithium BP-522CL 2400mAh)and i keep the stock one as back up but i've never had to switch to it yet. The software is pretty straightforward and I do use either the software from my powershot camera or the camcorder to load pics so they are compatible with each other in this case (zoombrowser EX).

The not so Bad: nowadays with the pixel/resolutions quality of the cameras the 640x480 is not up to snuff anymore. It's better than nothing in a pinch when set to Fine quality. I really wouldn't use standard unless you using it for quick loading pic via internet i.e. ebay pics....

Now the BAD! I really am surprised at Canon's response to this. I began having tape issues which also seems to be a fairly common complain. Now i really don't know if this would be a common issue with age and usage with all miniDV tape camcorders or just particularly Canon's but it began asking me to "eject" tapes more often but i noted it was related to when rewinding. Of all my taped it crimpled 3 and ate 1 (older tapes) during fast rewind. In other words, press stop, then rewind then it seems to be more riskier. HOWEVER, If the tape is playing and i hold my finger on rewind it doesn't have any problems eat/crimping. I contacted canon and they said it may need service. I keep my stuff meticulous....the cost of whatever the probably BS repair is quite high considering it may range from a simple yet $125 - $175 service to a much more costly and not worth the $$ problem. They did offer me to be a member of the canon loyalty progam which they send you an access code to their loyalty website and basically give you credit and a discount towards other items for your product. Think of it as trading in a car for a new one (and yes you still do get somewhat of the shaft but if you want to avoid the headaches of selling and getting something for the item then just bite the bullet). I still think if canon had a decent amount of concern regarding this tape issue they would be a little more proactive about it. It just seemed like he was saying an indirect but courteous "it's old so tough luck". I do note most of my problems have been with the FUJI tapes. I just switched to PANASONIC tapes so it's still early but no problems so far using my rewind method. TDK seem to work well with it too but it seems hard to find now. Too bad, i liked the TDK tapes. Anyone else come across another compatible bard lemme know. Reading some stuff on this, some say it is the type of coating or tape used that may make it more or less compatible but that's internet reading so take it with a grain of salt.

Accesories: aside from the extended lith battery i mentioned, I also have crystal optics 3 lens filter kit (UV, PL and flourescent filter) which i recommend lens filters for any cam for 2 reasons, #1 and priority- God forbid if you dirty or scratch the lens, it's the filter lens that's much cheaper to replace vs. replacing the actual cam lens itself. #2 it does enhance taping if used correctly...it can minimize glare, tone down the brightness if you're taping on a super bright environment or give a more natural look to recording if taping under flourescent lighting....

After 4 years use... still going strong.......2006-11-07

This was my first digital camera, and I absolutely love it. Still going strong after 4 years. I've used it on trips, to record concerts, and just general fun. It's incredibly easy to use.

The complaints I have are geared towards the fact that it's outdated. What once was sleek and smaller than the competition is now big and bulky. It's also slow to load up... meaning you may miss a shot turning on the camera. The battery is so-so, but to fix this just carry around spares.

The good have so far outweighed the bad... fast/easy transfer of video & images to a computer. I can use it as a temporary webcam. I also use it for quick digital pictures (but the quality isn't that great). The battery and memory are easy enough to replace if needed (I haven't needed to yet). The zoom is amazing!

It's overall versatile, and I'll keep using it until it dies (no signs of it so far).

great beginner cam.......2006-02-27

one thing to watch out for,when using the zoom button,dont just let it go after you zoom,or it will click and the noise will be recorded. however,if you edit and can dub different audio then it wont matter. that said, we love the camera.
ive been thinking about an off board mic for sterio audio,,just for fun. but since this camera is kinda old now,finding extra parts is kinda tough. when we bought it,they were just comming out and then everything was available,but now,several years later,,, well they arent. ebay or maybe canon outlet in the usa.
in fact i just bid on a remote for it,we lost the other one. man,they come in handy.
id probly also want a clear over lense to protect the main lense from grit and crud. cheaper to get a new cover than new lense.

I liked it at first.......2005-04-27

It was a pretty good camera until it stopped working. One day I turned it on and it started beeping and flasshing an eject tape message. But you couldn't eject the tape and the camera would not respond to anything. I had the camera just over two years when this happened. Luckily I purchased an extended warranty at Best Buy. Best Buy sent the camera to Canon for repair. Canon would not repair it because it would be too expensive so, Best Buy gave me a new camera. And I was allowed to get a different brand, so I went with a Sony Handycam.

Remove the cassetter problem...again.......2005-03-20

As with others, this was a great camera until the remove cassette problem appeared 8 months ago. Now it barely plays or records. I'm never buying another Canon and going back to Sony. BTW, the buzzing is the automatic microphone gain. If there's not enough sound to record it cranks up the input volume so much that you hear the tape motor.

I've had this drive for a little over two years, and it's already starting to break on me. It shows telltale signs that my old Quantum BigFoot drives used to have... namely, loud clacking noises followed by pauses of a second or so (where the computer becomes inoperable), until one day, you turn the computer on, and the drive clacks and clangs and never boots... and it never will again! The worst case of this happened in college during a week when I had a lot of assignments due, all of which were on the drive.

The prices on their drives are tempting; that's what drew me in. But now I know better to shell out the extra couple of bucks (literally) for a Western Digital or, better yet, Seagate. Maxtor drives may be big, but they're not necessarily built to last.

But if you're looking for a scratch, slave drive, this could be useful. Just don't trust it with important files or your operating system (unless you know how to re-install an operating system).

By the way, the reason I stopped to write this review, is because I am looking for a replacement.

One of the best drives I have ever had!.......2002-02-27

I bought one just like this about two years ago and I haven't had any significant problems with it since. It stays cool and runs great, even though I re-format and install quite a bit (sometimes due to Windows problems but mostly because I like to try other operating systems). Currently I have 4 on my drive, one in a virtual partition within Windows. I wanted to try the newest Red Hat but didn't have enough room, so I ordered another one so I can spread things out a bit.

The installation went great the first time and I am expecting the second drive to be just as reliable.

Dissappoitment.......2002-02-25

I owned this product for @30 days. I was warned after I bought it that the SCSI version runs very hot and one burnt up on my brother-in-laws system soon after he purchased it. He warned me that it needs much cooling because his burnt up. Near the 30 day warranty my IDE version fried. This unit was a very loud unit to the point that it rattled a solid mid-tower case. It is manufactured by Quantum's fireball which Maxtor acquired. I traded mine in on a Maxtor 5400 40gig which has been bullet proof so far and is very quiet. I have talked with another user who after bringing back two, was happy with the 3rd attributing the bad ones to a bad production lot.

The best hard drive I have ever bought........2002-01-10

I bought this as a replacement drive for my 6 gig. Maxtor. A very good drive in its self but not a lot of space. This drive is, without question, the best hard drive I have ever bought. It out performs any other IDE drive I have used. Even my old Western Digital drives. Back from when they were the number one manufacturer. Not only is it fast, it's really very quiet. So quiet that I didn't even know it was on until my computer came on.

I didn't have to play with the jumpers or the Maxtor MaxBlast Plus software at all. I just took the old one out, re-attached the IDE cable and power to the new one, closed up the computers case, and started the computer up. I then had to format the drive, load an operating system, and restore all my data from back-ups. I was up and running in about 30-40 minutes. The drive is jumpered to support this type of replacement right out of the box. If you plan to add a new hard drive for additional storage space you may need to re-jumper both your old drive and your new one.

Every single hard drive created today has a jumper chart on it. The jumper chart will show you where to place the jumper for all three hard drive configuration settings Master, Slave, and Cable Select (Manufacture Default). Tip: If you're placing both drives on the same IDE cable, jumper the old drive as Master and the new drive as Slave.

If you're new to replacing hard drives, I do suggest you obtain help. Replacing a hard drive isn't hard, but it is frustrating if you have never done it before and run into a problem. You should also obtain hardware and warranty information from you computer manufacturer. You don't want to void your warranty just because you opened the computer and you weren't supposed to.

Great Radio.......2005-04-16

This is a great set. The 4W on GMRS is nice (remember to get a license) as well as the standard FRS (no license required). The units are smaller than I expected for a 4-AA radio. The headset is great. I turned of VOX operation and manually selected the push-to-talk on the unit or on the strap from headset to unit. Very pleased with them.

Used it in the timber out hunting. It reached more than a mile in deep thick timber back to camp. I plan on buying another set. Easy to use. BE SURE TO GET FCC LICENSE. $75 for license OUCH!! Eventually you will be checked by fish and game or law enforcement for the license.

Awesome Radio - Great Range.......2004-07-19

When I received this radio I was a little wary, but after some initial tests, I found this to be one great radio. The range was spectacular, and the clarity was outstanding. I have tried many radios, but have never experienced one this great. Get the optional battery pack, you will not be disappointed. I use this ATVing every weekend and it makes communication very easy.

Great Two-Way Radios!.......2004-07-13

Finally there is a great two-way radio out there.
Took it out with a some frineds when we went caraving during the 4th of July weekend and they were great. We talked well over 5 miles vehicle to vehicle. You can purchase an optional Battery Charger (strongly reccommended) because it comes with the vehicle adapter so you never run out of batteries. Well here is my review.

1) Easy to use.
2) Loud speaker audio.
3) The extra power really gives the extra range.
4) Awesome BeltClip, the best one I've seen so far.
5) Its got a vibrate mode, and a silent mode.
6) Also has a weather radio built into it, which is great when you are camping or out on the road.
7) The three year warranty.

Overall they are a very good buy, we had two pairs with batteries and chargers and they worked great during our trip. I would reccommend to anyone.

Unfortunately, I was led to believed this DVD Player was compatible for my TV. However, it was not. Therefore, I'm unable to use it making me unable to know how it will work. So, be sure to find out if this DVD Player is compatible with your TV, prior to buying it.

The 1 star is based on fact I can't use the DVD Player, not on how it may work.

Astonishing again!.......2006-03-16

The 2 previous reviews are right: this is a gem of a DVD player at a very modest price. It plays absolutely everything! I have a collection of DVDs from a mail-order correspondence course that are in uneven condition, resulting in lots of skipping across chapters, stalling, etc. That was on my Zenith DVB216--at several times this price, I might add. I was very frustrated with those problems, so I bought this player for Xmas--and it works like a charm. Absolutely flawless tracking. You could put an Oreo in this thing & it would play it! The remote is intuitive & easy to use, the on-screen displays very helpful and unobtrusive. I especially like the quick replay--it backs up about 10 seconds a pop, which is useful in watching DVD classes. The only blemish is that it does not have bevelled edges or finger-grips on the tray for inserting/removing disks (another review commented on this--a minor annoyance). I like it so much I've considered buying two! Highly recommended.

Great DVD player for the money.......2006-03-15

I looked at several of the DVD players offered up on Amazon and settled on this one. I'm glad I did! The key thing for me was the ability to play DVD-R discs and this player does that in spades. This player replaced my first DVD player, which was bought about 5 years ago. Needless to say, the picture on this one is way better than the one I had before.

Nice, simple, quick setup. Remote is easy to understand.
