Poor Video Taken Indoors.......2006-11-12

I bought the ZR90 about 2 year back when I had my first kid as I wanted to keep home videos of the kids. Frankly I am terribly dissappointed at at the quality of the pictures in the house with all the lights on in the house. My sons first birthday video's are all so dissapointingly dark. One mistake I did is not going to stored and checkign out the camera before I ordered it online. I suggest goin to a retailer and checking out the picture quality indoors before ordering it online.

Outside pictures in bright sunlight are okay. I am not a phony reviewer trying to trash the product. If you click on my name you will see all the other products I have reviewed.

Has a repair notice on it........2006-10-29

I bought this camera about 21 months ago; I have only used it a couple of times but without a problem. When I tried to used it the other day I was able to record sound but no picture. I was prepared to buy a new camera, until I found that Canon has a repair notice on it for this problem. They will fix it free of charge even if out of warranty; I could not ask for more!

ZR series.......2006-10-12

2 star rating-BUT I don't have this particular item. I have a ZR60 and LCD screen suddenly went black. We have not used this camcorder that much over the last 3 years (have about 6-7 complete tapes) and it would cost over 200.00 to repair so the ZR85 was recommended for close to the cost of repair(the batteries and tapes would fit the same, etc). THANKS for the info on this camcorder! I think we will continue to look (maybe Sony?). Consumer reports says repairs are higher on the Canon's than any other camcorder....

Great Mini Dig Vid Cam .......2006-09-03

This cam works great and never had any problems with mine. Great deal even contains a microchip for color etc that only high end camcorders have but itsn't really mentioned.

I bought this recorder, and used it here and there for special occations, now the camera stopped working. Just a white screen to look at. I hear the camera just stop working, it shows on the lcd for about 10 secs then white. Worthless piece of equipment. Should of bought the exteneded warrenty, would of made my money back on that one. This baby is going to the bottom of the trach can. GO SONY

Ejection problems have killed this camera -- and apparently many others.......2007-07-26

We bought this camera a little over a year ago but have rarely used it. However, just when I need it the most to capture a family event, the camera starts beeping and tells me that the tape must be ejected. So I tried to eject it, but it did not eject. Moved maybe a millimeter then moved back. I don't think we put more than several hours of use on this thing and it broke. Very unhappy.

Spoke to tech support, but they didn't offer up anything but disconnecting all power and waiting an hour to start it up again. Didn't work. Have a suspicion that the hour I waited was the hour that tech support closed. Repairs will cost as much as buying a new one. So buying a new one we will, just not a Canon.

Still very, very, unhappy.

ZR200 Transfers Old Video (V8,Hi8,VHS) Like A Charm.......2007-02-12

One excellent feature of the ZR200 camera which I have not seen discussed is its ability to transfer home video from VHS, V8, Hi8, or any other video format which has an RCA jack system (yellow, red, white), to digital video (DV) on Mini-DV tapes.

This feature is fabulous and dramatically easier to use than other methods I have tried. I did not discover it during nearly 1 1/2 years of camera ownership until I inadvertently came across a terse mention of such transfers in the owner's manual. (See Canon ZR200 owner's manual at page 79 for instructions, or page 72 for the Canon ZR700 unit with similar capabilities.)

Suffice it to say that the transfer process is very easy, assuming that one has kept the original cabling which came with the ZR200 (or ZR700) camera. It produces a video image which is superior to any other method I have tried. And I have tried a number of methods, including transferring video to a high-quality external video capture card to DV and ultimately to Mini-DV tape using iMovie on an Apple computer.

Upon careful comparison of like clips, this complex, multi-step approach produced good results, but only a nominally clearer image and it has tiny diagonal stripes running across it and a curling upper left edge from the video recorder heads; overall not as good. The color quality and image clarity that results from direct videotape to Mini-DV-tape method using the ZR200 built-in features is overall, smoother, cleaner and produces a full screen image without diagonal lines or the jagged tape-head artifact in the upper left corner. Direct transfer appears to eliminate this visual nuisance entirely, or at least it did so for me. This significantly improves the image appearance and eliminates an otherwise very distracting visual distortion.

In transferring 20-year old V8-tapes, I was stunned at the improved image clarity and vivid color, in some instances as if the tape had been shot the day before! It was a real pleasure to see clear images from the past - now I only wish I had had slightly better camera skills.

I also recommend buying a cleaner for the heads of any video source you might use; Sony makes a good head cleaner for V8/Hi8 and for Mini-DV. As I cleaned the heads of the video source, the image quality and clarity quality improved significantly.

Overall, the ZR200 is an excellent camera and has some delightful hidden features, including 16x9 widescreen and direct video to Mini-DV transfer.

You can learn how to use this camera in 10 minutes---and this is the first one I have ever purchased. Nothing fancy---it is a very reasonable palm size camera with the zoom and power buttons easily accessible to the person who is filming.

Poor quality.......2002-07-18

I ordered this drive 6 months ago. The drive I initially received, worked fine initially, but over a few months took longer and longer to warm up (up to 30 minutes), before the computer would recognize it. I returned it to the manufacturer. The second drive they sent me lasted for about 2 weeks, before my computer reported that it could not read from the drive at all, due to I/O errors. It seems that this drive is so unreliable, I need to keep a copy of all my files somewhere else, to be sure I don't lose anything when the drive fails.

Needs better support for OS-X.......2001-12-27

Does not operate well in OS-X. Drive is not accessable in OS-X unless Classic OS-9 is running on bootup. This means that you cannot run OS-X applications directly from the drive.

The transfer rate for this drive is extremely slow when uploading digital video files directly from the camera to the drive. The drive will lockup and you will need to reboot the system to unlock the drive if you cannot unlock it by powering the drive on and off.

Maxtor customer service is lacking, as well. There is no disclaimer on the box or any of their documentation on their website advising consumers about compatability problems with OS-X. They do not have any driver updates section for this drive on their website. I finally found the OS-X disclaimer after I downloaded the Software Installation file and decompressed it. This file should have been on the webpage as a notice.

Maxtor makes very good products, but they really stepped on it with this one. They need to do a better job with Mac products if they want to keep their share of this market, or just do us a favor and stop producing for the Mac and save us a lot of time.

great product for use with an iMac.......2001-12-12

I have had nothing but good luck with this product since I bought it about 4 months ago. I use it for backing up my hard drive and extra video and picture storage. Easy to use and nice looking on the desktop. Highly recommend. I think I would spend the extra cash on the 80MB if I had it to do all over though.

Maxtor External Hard Drives.......2001-11-02

Since no one had mentioned their experience with Maxtor external drives on the PC, I thought I would add my two cents. I recently purchased the 40gb USB HD from them and it works great. Between my friends and I, we have all had nothing but instant plug and play success in Windows 98, ME, and 2000 -- which I must say is rare for PC products. They don't even include driver disks; you don't need them!

I don't see why the FireWire option would be much different, assuming you have the correct ports. It's an excellent buy for so much storage space. If you don't plan on swapping much data and use it more for backups or ghosting as I do, it puts any other medium (Zip, Jaz, CD-R, Tape) to shame.

Lastly, I would definitely recommend Maxtor products over Buslink, who also makes external HDs. I bought Buslink's silver portable CD-RW drive and still haven't been able to get it to work in Windows 2000 (which claimed compatibility on the box), and I have given up on their customer service after months of being no help whatsoever.

The first one of these I bought wouldn't stay alive for more than a couple of minutes between power-ups. Maxtor kept telling me it was an incompatibility with my computer and wouldn't repair it even though I had tried a different firewire card and computer. I returned the drive for another one. The next one worked more reliably until recently and now it acts like the first one I bought. Maxtor won't admit this drive has flaws!

Pathetic tech Support.......2006-07-19

The player was good for 3 weeks and then I started having problems. The battery drained fast and then one it did not recognize the battery. I emailed their tech support and gave me a 800 number to call to. Every time I called the 800 number it went to a voice box. Left message no response. Emailed again stating the issue no response. The player was good while it lasted might have been fixed if I had the support. Tech support is really pathetic.

Wonderful product!!.......2006-03-12

Well I Love this thing. Yes it was somewhat hard to learn at first but if you pay close attention to the instructions manual it's pretty easy to operate. I am able easily navigate to my folders ect ect. I used window media player to save my favorite songs then went to my music and "copied" (not moved) the folders onto the player. For awhile I was confused at first about it. I had uploaded the folder that had the artist's name on it but you actually must open the artist's folder then copy the actual album's folder to the player otherwise it won't show up under folders. I hope this will help other people on this subject cause that had gotten me stumped for awhile. :) I must say it was totally worth the money!! I would buy it!!

I bought the MP3 player for my son. He enjoys it, and had little trouble figuring out how to use it. I must say, I was impressed with the quality of sound it produces. I recommend this player. I can't say how long it will hold up with a teenager? This is a good entry level player.
