Brilliant little unit.......2001-02-27

I am so glad I finally bought this device after so many months of scrutinising the competitors. I almost settled on the EM500 until a comparison of specs showed it to be virtually the same in look/effect but an inferior unit in grunt (only 16MB of internal RAM).

EASE OF USE: The E115 is **very** easy to use -- a pulldown Start menu at the top left will get you in or out of any program instantly. The down side is there is no little 'x' at the top right to close your programs, and you can either live with them simply opening on top of each other, eventually slowing you down (or so I'm told), or you can make six (yes six) taps to get to the correct setting option to shut them down. While this sounds immensely annoying, I discovered it wasn't really and I just adapted, only going to close programs when I got to more than three open at once. And even with six programs running, I noted no discernable loss of speed. Further, the downloadable TaskPro Navigator program was written to fix this CE problem, for those who go nuts with more than one open program and want to close as they go.

READIBILITY: The color is fabulous -- and books/documents/report reading, one of the two main reasons I bought this, are excellent on the eye, even after two or three hours of reading. Nice big screen -- no green/grey backgrounds the early Palms et al which make me drowsy and my eyes achey after twenty minutes. E115 comes with Microsoft Reader so you can also download books for even easier-on-the-eyes reading. I love Reader mode. Top marks.

DESIGN FLAWS: There are five obvious design flaws: One, the AC adaptor plug is on the bottom, left side of the device and, when propped up in bed reading, you get it jabbing annoyingly into your chest. Sometimes I run it on batteries just to avoid the digging in power cord.

Two, the power button on the left side of the device can be bumped easily. While it doesn't matter if you bump it off (it always restarts with exactly what you had on your screen when working -- even your music starts up exactly where you left off! BRILLIANT.) It does have a problem that when you are sliding the unit into the case provided, it can bump 'on' and without knowing it, it could be powered on inside the case, draining down the batteries. Thus I now put it in the case and try and sneek a peek to see if it is on. (not easy) And yes, I immediately ordered a different style of case ASAP to prevent this.

Three: Serial port connection? Not a flaw so much as a bad decision. God, you could grow old and grey waiting for this thing to download an MP3. Takes me an hour on average for a four minute song. I want a USB cable!! Still, when you think about it, once you've downloaded all of what you need, like your favorite songs, you're all set. Apart from the occasional report (which in contrast takes only a minute or so to download) you won't really spend your life downloading stuff onto it. And if you want more than a dozen songs, constantly updated, you probably should consider buying an MP3 player instead.

Four: The record button is on the left of the unit -- handy if you want instant access I suppose, but given most people aren't journalists needing that quote in three seconds or less, a less accessible record button would be preferable. I am often bumping it and recording instantly a marvellous assortment of background sound without intending to. Nice waste of memory space that, if you're not careful. On the other hand, it is a pretty fabulous function in the first place and I like how you can easily name your sound bites and treat them like any other program.

Five: When you listen to music, the three front buttons are instantly reconfigured and can be reprogrammed as a mini remote. Therefore the button you usually use to scroll down in a document may be, for example, programmed to fast forward. Now what if you wanted to read a document AND listen to music? Setting the button at NONE in the program still disables it from its non-music scroll mode. So you have to use your pen to scroll down the document, while listening to music, regardless of whether the buttons are allocated a new function in Windows Media mode. Another small aside -- sometimes the music pauses as you open and close new programs.

INTERNET and EMAIL: Those wanting this unit for the Internet browsing ability when you buy optional extra the modem card, I do not recommend it. It's taken an eternity for me to configure this correctly to go online and it still won't let me access some sites, like hotmail and google, for no reason I can fathom. Some tell me it's just the nature of the Windows CE environment. If this is so -- and net browsing is why you bought it, it's a rip-off. Fortunately it wasn't what I needed it for, so I don't care so much. And it may just be (my) human error, so do more research. Meanwhile I still can't figure out how to configure it to send an Outlook email from it (despite reading every instruction I could find), although mercifully there are some sites I can surf to and send an email from there, so it's not an impossible problem. Meanwhile its synchronisation between PC and unit with Outlook Express is trouble free, but it won't synch with any other mail programs you might use on your PC like Eudora.

PICTURES: Nice clear vivid images. You'll love how they come up.

SOUND: Oh baby, here's where I go nuts. A built-in MP3 player that you don't HAVE to use earphones to use! You can just hit play and wow a roomful of your friends. It's excellent. Lovely quality and it compares well with the top-of-the-line Iomega hip-zip mp3 player I also own.

CALENDAR/APPOINTMENTS/CONTACT: So easy to use and sort it was a godsend. And with the Today menu button you can always see at a glance what's up with your tasks, appointments and mails. Excellent. Contact list is brilliant and you can store multiple phone numbers and emails for the one person.

SUMMARY: The flaws sound worse than they are. This has proved to be a most savvy purchase. With 32mb inbuilt and endlessly expandable thanks to the type1 compact flash card slot on the back, you'll be set forever if you want. The AC adaptor means even if you kill the battery and can't find a new one, you can still use it till the day you die. The color is so amazing you have to see it to believe it; and the MP3 player is of a fine quality. For those who need it to read lots of stuff this is absolutely the right unit. Accept no substitutes. There's plenty of programs to download, too, and I doubt I'll ever tire of it. Unless I/they fix the internet problems, (depending on who is responsible) I wouldn't recommend it for this. But for every other function, I'd give it 10 out of 10.

A Class of its Own.......2000-11-28

Excellent battery life. Color and screen easy to read. Easy to connect and highly compatible with Windows 98. Expansion cards readily available. Great back up capability to expansion card. However buttons are too easily pushed that activate the device ( a press and hold feature to turn on would be nice). This is the third PDA I have purchased and find this one to be the finest on the market.

This product had great potential, but there just aren't enough programs that work through Windows CE and 98 seamlessly. Casio has made a device that is lightning fast and has an amazing display (131 MHz and over 65,000 colors). The only real qualm I have with this machine, other than the software problems, is the battery. If you leave it off for a few days the battery is wasted and your memory is completely erased (I had the same problem a few years ago with a first generation Nino). When Microsoft gets its act together and makes their CE software more reliable they will have the Palm-PC market cornered and devices like these will be worth while.

I had an old version of the HP Jornado, it always crashed and the ActiveSync always exploded in my face! My Casio E115 Pocket PC doesn't have this problem. Its true MS really does get it right the 3rd time round! I'm extremely pleased with my Pocket PC, it provides all my trusted productivity tools as well as MP3, eBooks, Audio Books, Office capabilities and most awesome of all video. I love the thing, the only thing missing now is longer battery life and a GPRS version that is always on so I can access the Internet anywhere I go!

I think the PDA will become main stream very, very soon. I started with the Apple Newton and now I'm at the Pocket PC era, the Casio is a marval with the exception of being slow for content rich video. Apart from that I can't really fault it !

In terms of experience it is much better than PALM... Sorry .... Even people in the office who have been PALM loyalist are seriously considering switching as I'm always talking about it!

PALM, watch out Microsoft has really SOLD me in term of richness and experience.

I just ordered my second KLH 10" sub after using another one for almost a year. I shopped for nearly a month and could not find anything better for the price. I use it in a small room, primarily for home theatre use and it works well. It gets a little flabby if pushed hard but that's to be expected in a speaker in this range. Not the best choice for loud music but decent for the 5.1 soundtracks. Plenty of rumble. I never use mote than 20 watts when listening to music and at that level it is reasonably clean. Hard to beat for price.

Good for the price........2006-08-11

I bought this from Amazon over a year ago, for < $70. I wanted a flash-drive MP3 player mainly to play audio books (.mp3 or .wma only) while commuting to work, and wasn't interested in an iPod; for me, the smaller, the better. This MP3 player serves this purpose, and is inexpensive compared to similar items. I use one of those cassette adapters to listen to it in the car, and this works just fine.

It uses 1 AAA battery, which usually lasts up to 15 hrs for me. It does pick up a book where I left off. However, if I decide to switch to a different book altogether before finishing the first one, it loses the "bookmark," which is annoying. It means I have to start all over again because there's no FF or RW within a file. As for music, I only keep about 20 songs on it, and haven't had any problems with playback.

I keep this in the car unless I'm uploading new files to it. This means it sits through temperature extremes (NJ). When it gets very cold during winter, the display on the unit doesn't want to display. It does reappear when the temp warms up. I have no idea if all LCDs do that. I probably shouldn't leave it outside anyway, car or no. In any case, it's still working the same as the 1st day I used it.

Overall, I'm satisfied with this. It's no-frills, but gets the job done, and didn't cost much. Although I just upgraded to a Sandisk 2GB player, I'm still keeping this for the commute.

This was a refurbished drive and not what I was expecting. It proved impossible to contact the seller to return it. Don't buy from this flakey outfit.

I use this as one of my backup drives on a Mac OSX machine. I actually have 2 backups one being redundant. When adding external drives to any Mac they should always be reformatted with disk utility. After I formatted them and started to use them they would crash my machine when they were both on. After talking to the Maxtor support it was determined that all I needed was a different type of driver that I accessed from their website. There is no such thing as a perfect brand of hard drive they all suffer from the same problems. I have known people who have had maxtors for over 10 years with no problems. sometimes you get a lemon and they crap out after 3 weeks. It happens to all of the manufacturers. The point of all this rambling is be vigilant! Do multiple backups of the things that are truly irreplaceable. Pictures should be archived to CD or DVD at least 2 times a year. All it takes is to lose the first 3 years of you children's life to pound this concept home. As for the hard drive you can choose any reputable brand and be reasonably certain that it will be OK. Just don't get USB 1.0 like I did because it took 38 hours to backup 100gig. You should buy the largest capacity that you can afford and go with Firewire or USB 2.0
Personally I don't use the Button or the retrospect software. I use Backup from apple, but I have heard it works just fine.

A Must Have!!!.......2005-09-15

I bought this backup drive after I nearly lost everything that I had on my laptop, and I couldn't be happier since. If you are a laptop owner like myself, then this is absolutely one item that you must have. First of all, laptop internal drives generally tend to be more expensive and less reliable, and second of all, you've simply got to protect whatever precious you might have on your personal computer. I almost lost all the pictures of my 1 year old daughter, and I am not taking any more chances. I have a wireless network setup in my house, so using this drive in connection with Linksys Network Storage Link NSLU2, I can send/retrieve files without been physically connected to the drive. It's totally awesome! I haven't noticed any problems with speed either. It also comes with Dantz Retrospect Express program that allows you to do your backups automatically. Nice little program which worked well so far for me. All together, a solid drive and a must have computer accessory.

Here's my review: I won't be buying Maxtor again.

The drive failed within 18 months. Not sure if I'll recover the lost data. I've never had a drive fail, so this is very disappointing.

Moral of story: Find a better external hard drive company. It seems there are too many similar stories to convince me to buy Maxtor again.

Reliable? A Backup Device Needs To Be.......2005-04-20

The hard drive crashed in my machine and I ended up replacing the entire computer and changing brands. I was going to buy the Maxtor A01B120 to use as a backup device until I canabalized my failed PC and noticed that the drive that crashed was a Maxtor! I spoke to friends and found they had similar problems.
