Does The Job.......2003-08-02

This player is actually made by NEC and it is very easy to use and get up and running. All I did was to take out my CD-RW burner in my PC and replace it with this drive. To do that, all you need to do is take out any restraining screws on the old drive and disconnect the IDE cable and power connector and then slide it out. After you slide out your old drive, look on the back of it and make a note of which "jumper" the little plastic shunt is on (mine was on CSEL). Then place the plastic shunt on this drive in the exact same place as on the drive you just took out, slide it in, connect the power and IDE cables, and you will be good to go. Put the cover back on the PC and boot it up and if you have Win XP it will automatically load the drivers and you will be all set (no need to load any additional drivers).

This unit comes with two light versions of Nero, WinDVD, and some other utilities. I ended up just using my copy of Ulead VideoStudio 6 to burn my first DVD because the light Nero versions were not capable of burning to DVD unless you upgraded them to a paid version (so keep that in mind).

But even with that, I would say this is a very capable drive for the money and I was able to play a test DVD+RW that came with the unit on my new Zenith and also on an older Pioneer unit without any trouble.

Great drive at a cheap price!.......2003-05-29

I bought this drive on sale ... about 3 weeks ago and I've already burned many many dvds with it. I was skeptical because of the price but I don't have any regrets as of yet. I've made my own dvds and back ups of dvds that I already have (dvdxcopy of course) and they play in every standalone dvd player I have tried them in (panasonic, sony, pioneer etc etc). It only supports the DVD +R/RW media though which is its only drawback. Makes no difference to me because it does exactly what I need it to do!

I bought my dvd burner about a year ago. Until now, it had performed beatifully. I only occasionally used it as a dvd burner, and cd burner. Now it won't even read a cd. I expect a longer life from my drives, and will be switching to a different brand.

Stay away from CenDyne DVD drives........2003-07-03

These are great if you want to burn CD's but as a DVD burner they are the best if your looking to create a coster. Check out their website aka Pioneer, the support is equally poor. Be especially weary of the DVR-104 drives.

Cable select is used in very few computers..Only the Name Brands Compaq,HP,Dell,Gateway use cable seclect to make there customers buy their upgrade items. I build and repair computers for a living and if you don't know to check the master, slave and cable select settings of all the drives in your system before adding a drive to make sure everything is set up correctly you should not be upgrading your computer yourself.
I know people with this drive and it works great..
as a side note if your cable is a cable select cable replace it with a standard drive cable and set the drives to master and slave.. it gets rid of all the problems.

Great dvd burner!!.......2003-02-02

It's a rebadge pioneer drive, it even says pioneer corp. on the drive itself. No problems burning back-up's of all my dvd movies with it using my pc, and so as burning home movies into dvd. Pioneer always makes good drive. For a cheaper media solution and better compatibility with standalone dvd players, I recommend this drive, especially the newer 4x that just came out.

not so fast.......2002-12-17

I havent bought a writer yet, so take this for what it is worth. but I have been doing a lot of research. The cendynes are white box (OEM) Pioneer units...and pioneers get great ratings from the hardcore video editing crowd. go to the forum at canopus.com if you dont believe me. those guys dont have old machines...they are running the fastest and the best so that they can manipulate video realtime. Some of them have even bought the cendynes because they are private labelled Pioneers and they are giving them good marks. On top of this, they are dvd-r as opposed to dvd+r, which apparently means the burned dvds work on a larger range of different dvd/tv machines. If you are going to use it for just data and not video, this of course makes no difference. (warning, this is only a 2x burner...there is a new 4x burner already out.

I picked this DVD-ROM drive up locally because it was marked down by more than 30%. This was lower than anything I've seen on-line. I was apprehensive - How could anything so inexpensive be any good? It turns out that this CenDyne CDI CD00085 DVD-ROM drive is solidly built, relatively quiet, works flawlessly and is worth more than I paid. (I have a HP CD-RW that seems pretty flimsy and cheap by comparison.) The software (WIN DVD) that came with the unit is pretty good too.

The one hang up- the documentation is POOR at best. The quality of the graphics in the installation guide was so bad, I could barely make out any detail. The software came with NO documentation.

In spite of this, the installation on my old Dimension XPST700r went pretty well with out any problems. (Fortunately, Dell has pretty good hardware and documentation.) I've also had the benefit of installing hardware before. I wouldn't recommend this "kit" as your first attempt to upgrade your hardware. It'll be pretty nerve wracking.

But if you know what you're doing and you're looking for a decent DVD-ROM drive to upgrade that old computer, this is definitely worth the look.

I sold my T41 with XSVGA for this. I wanted something I could also use to read/research on train, or cafe. This laptop does it well. And the screen re-orients whenever you move it from tablet to laptop configuration, and visa versa. However, it's still a bit slow (like most tablets). I think Lenovo has done as good a job as possible, but the technology still has a way to go. Weight, speed, integration of apps, all must be improved for these to become killer machines.

I knew the machine will be limiting when I bought it. But for me, the ability to read in tablet form is very important. I don't like the aesthetic experience of reading on computers.

I'm left-handed. Which means the handwriting recognition is not so good for me. For a right-handed friend of mine, the handwriting recognition works great. (for me, it's either frustrating or humorous, depending on my mood).

In general, the microsoft software and help files specific to tablets are dated and obviously not a high priority at Microsoft. If it was, you'd have better left-hand support. Also, there are few tablet-specific apps bundled with machine. The few that are, are third party trial-ware.

In conclusion, if you want a tablet to read/research, surf the net, and also use as a laptop for basic business chores, this is as nice a tablet as I think you'll find. But if you expect this to be the tablet that fulfills the promise of tablet-PCs, then no, I don't think we're there yet. And the price is also too high if what you mostly want is a laptop.

They worked out very well. I have burned dozens of them so far without a problem using my Dell 8x CD burner. They're very handy, as they're only about 3 inches wide and fit into my pocket easily.

This is very useful for using with the a-max mcd 380 mp3 player, because it allows you not to write definitively on a cd-r, but it is not available in France, and I can't buy it with amazon.com.
