There's no doubt that the Compaq iPAQ 3600 series occupy that rare class of gadgets that's noticeable for being eye-catching and fashionable as well as functional. Even if you don't regularly shuttle between nations in a private company jet, using the sleek metal device may make you feel like a high-powered executive (or at the very least, make other people think you are).

The most striking feature of the iPAQ is its bright, crisp color screen. We were a little surprised to discover that it only displays 4,096 colors (compared to color offerings from Palm and Handspring, for example, which display up to 65,536 colors). While the color quality is fine for everyday use, photos can appear somewhat grainy or posterized.

Other hardware notables include a headphone jack for listening to digital music (or even just the built-in alert sounds, which are the best we've heard on any device), an infrared port for beaming data to other similarly equipped Pocket PCs, and a voice recorder for capturing your ideas while in traffic. The unit is powered by a rechargeable lithium-ion battery that performed acceptably for a color display. A connection port at the bottom accommodates extension packs that can read CompactFlash media, PC Cards, and other peripherals (or just brightly colored jackets for expressing your fashion sense).

In terms of storage and software, the iPAQ is a modern workhorse. It has 32 MB of RAM for storing large media files like MP3s and movie or animation clips, plus 16 MB of ROM that houses the included applications. These include the Microsoft Windows CE 3.0 operating system, Pocket PC versions of Microsoft Word, Excel, Internet Explorer, Money, Windows Media Player, and Reader as well as applications like a calendar, contact list, task list, and notes.

The iPAQ accepts data using a handwriting recognition system that was surprisingly tolerant of our scribbled notes--we encountered problems mainly with two-stroke letters like t, i, and k. An onscreen keyboard comes in handy in these situations, or you can use the "inking" feature to write directly on the screen, followed by a Recognize command that translates the writing into letters. Although inking seemed to lag slightly behind the stylus as we wrote, it picked up 80 to 95 percent of the letters.

This isn't to say that the iPAQ is perfect, however. Many aspects of Windows CE 3.0 drove us crazy, like the irrational choice to put the program menus at the bottom of the screen and present them so they don't appear to be menus at all. Another quirk is the iPAQ's Navigator, a large four-direction button below the screen that can be used to scroll through selections. Looking at the QStart screen (an icon view of most of the programs), you can highlight different icons using the Navigator. However, counterintuitively, you have to push up and down on the Navigator to highlight objects to the left and right, respectively. Pushing the center of the Navigator acts like the Enter key on a computer keyboard, taking you to the selected program or file.

The iPAQ interfaces with Windows-based PCs (sorry, Macintosh users) using Microsoft's ActiveSync 3.1 software (which also includes a full version of Outlook 2000). The synchronization process is pretty efficient, and lets you browse the contents of the iPAQ from your desktop. However, it took three PCs running three flavors of Windows and three ActiveSync installs before we were able to get the computer to recognize the iPAQ.

It's worth noting that the glitches we ran into were more interface annoyances that are probably easy to adapt to (though we'd rather have software engineers bend to users' needs). The iPAQ 3600 series is the closest device we've seen that (mostly) intelligently packs the capabilities of a full-size PC into a handheld. --Nelson Finn

I have had my Pocket PC for quite some time now, and I love the convenience that it offers.

Plus:

- Great color screen
- Fast and easy to use.
- Cradle adaptor is nice so you can able to sync files from pc to pocket pc.
- Includes Word, Notes, Calender, Calculator, Recorder, Window Media Player, etc... (HELPFUL)
- Expandable

Con

- Although it is expandable, you can't use your memory card to do anything but save materials. I am unable to listen to 256 mb songs... but i have to copy and paste song from the card to the pc every time I get sick of listening to the same song.
- Low battery life!

Other than that... it is great... user-friendly... and helpful if you are busy student or a college student...

I use it to:

1) types notes in class (why carry a laptop when you can get this)
2) MP3 player... besides the issue above, music quality is great... easy to transfer from pc to pocket pc.
3) calender and agenda... (keep important dates in check and be on tops of things)

This is a good value, but the screen is very difficult to read in less than perfect lighting conditions. Under bright flourescent lights in the office, it is fine. The rest of the time, though, I have a heck of a time with it. The internal memory also isn't really big enough to store MP3s. I decided to go back to paper and pen.

I found out the way to copy photos from my CompactFlash card onto the iPAQ. It's not hard but more complex than necessary. I also found out how to send the iPAQ in to have its screen replaced. A hassle. Its screen and/or stylus should work together so they don't produce scratches in the first place.

I bought this model in 2001 and still use it every day. It is reliable and has lots of software built in. I've added List Pro and Pocket Quicken. The only problems I've had are that the screen has gotten badly scratched, and I can't get the Compact Flash Jacket to read my digital photos.

I bought this pda, and it have all what I need, I can read ebooks, schedule my time, manage my contacts, listen to mp3, connect to internet (With the targus modem that I bought).
The only problem that I found If I can call that a problem is that is monochromatic...., well, If we go deep this is not a problem, but when compared with the other ones that are in color..., well.., you say........, anyway..., if youre thinking in buying this pda, it's a good deal !

I purshased this USB adapter to my computer to connect with my home network and it has worked great. I was interested in finding if the wireless network would work as well as a wired network and I am quite happy with its performance.

The MN-510 is an easy way to connect your remote PCs easily and without wires to your home network. The install wizard basically guides you through the install and connectivity with the base station is great. One nice thing about this adaper as compared to some slot-style B & G adapters is that the 510 allows you to move the unit because of the USB cable, thus taking advantage of the best position for signal strength. I've installed 6 of these and all in all a great product.

Compared with most other USB wireless adapters, the MN-510 is small and looks good. And it works very well too. I installed it in seconds with my Windows XP system and it worked flawlessly from the start. What more could you ask?

Pros: Small, reliable, never drops, great range (I think I tried it from about 100 ft and got close to 100%), software is easy to use (the CD takes care of pretty much everything). HASSLEFREE!!!

Cons: You could probably save a couple bucks if you use D-Link or something. Not as stylish as the little stick ones like WUSB12 from Linksys.

A nice piece of technology when it works right.......2004-01-02

I have purchased a total of 2 of these USB adaptors for my laptops. They work fine, if you don't move them very much. However, due to the mobility of laptops, which Microsoft may have overlooked when designing this, both of the USB plugs have developed a short. If you wiggle the cable just right it works fine, but if you try and move it after that, it shorts out and stops working. Laptop users be warned

Great Cassette Player.......2007-05-13

My husband requested that I purchase a cassette player and he is very pleased with my choice. We have a great many CD's, but we still have cassette tapes that we enjoy listening to when we exercise. Bob's is delighted with the sound and stability of the Panasonic RQV75 Stereo Radio Cassette with XBS.

Radio OK, but excellent tape player.......2001-01-09

The radio on this walkman is nothing to rave about. It picks up a lot of interference on FM from strong stations, but AM is a little better. The cassette part of this is excellent, however. It sounds great and the XBS system works well. Even with it on there's no sound distortion, even at high volume. Rewind and Fast Forward are really quick. It can wind a tape faster than any other walkman I've had. Also battery life couldn't be better. The batteries last a long time and even when they are weak the tape player still runs and the volume still goes up all the way without distortion, unlike other walkmans. The previous model, the RQ-V65, which I own, has a much better radio and I use it all the time. But when the volume control wore out I purchased this model thinking it would work exactly the same since appearance and control layout were similar. The radio didn't, however. Fortunately I had my old one repaired and since I was more interested in the tuner I sent this one back since I didn't need it anymore. But if you're looking for a good cassette player and don't care about the radio this is an excellent choice. It's definitely better than a Sony (which puts out no bass at high volume).

Good "budget" Walkman........2000-05-15

This is a great cheap personal cassette player. It is fairly lightweight and quite unobtrusive. If you are not out to look extra fancy this is a great player. Also it gets excellent battery life. I can listen to tapes all week long at work for almost a month(3.5 weeks on last set), usually about 3 hours average a night, on just two AA batteries. (I use only Duracell).

Professional Scanner Budget Price.......2004-02-05

I'm been shooting film for quite some time and decided to give digital a try. I consider myself to be a professional and wanted a professional scanner, but not something that would put me out. After reading a bunch of reviews I came up with the 8700 Pro. Came with Silverfast which I have heard great things about and this software that lets you blow up a 35mm slide to near poster size without pixelation occuring. Scanner also comes with calibration software that allowed me to plug in my ICM profile into the software for the correct color on everything. Next step is to obtain a great printer.

terrible product.......2004-07-05

this deserves half a star. i bought it b/c it seemed to have everyhing i wanted. i returned it to the store within a week. it refused to recognise cds after the second day. its construction is terribly cheap. i thought i was getting a bargain, but i'll spend a little more for a quality brand. will stay away from memorex in the future.worse cd player i've ever bought. don't waste your money!!!!

I will never buy a Memorex product ever again except CD-Rs.......2004-06-13

I bought this CD player because i was looking for an affordable CD player with FM radio. This has to be the worst I've ever bought. The battery power lasts maybe 4-5 hours total on 2 AAs. The radio frequencies suck so you're lucky if you get one good station. There isn't a hold feature. No resume, and it fails after about a month of use. Waste of money thank God its been discontinued! NO ONE BUY A MEMOREX PRODUCT AGAIN UNLESS ITS A BLACK CD-R BECAUSE THOSE ARE THE ONLY GOOD PRODUCTS FROM MEMOREX!

My LaCie 20gig Pocket drive died after 18 months. I used it once per month for backup of my desktop system and laptop. Now it's green light comes on but it doesn't spin up and the USB connection will not be recognized by either system.

Expensive but small and reliable.......2004-03-29

Bought a 60Gb version of this drive 2 years ago and have travelled the world with it ever since. Small, reliable, fairly robust (owing to the shock-proof rubberized casing) and with the convenience of both firewire and USB 2 interfaces. Plug it into Win2k, it gets auto-recognized and you're good to go in a few minutes. Windows explorer shows it as just another drive in the system. The second and subsequent times you connect, it gets set up even faster since the drivers will have been already loaded. Superb way of carrying 60Gb or more literally in your pocket.

If you are on the move a lot or want to extend your laptop I'd highly recommend it. However, the price per Gb with this drive is somewhat high, so if you could live with a less portable drive, then there are cheaper drives available with larger capacities. If size / weight are an issue, then I can recommend this as a very portable and reliable solution.
