Although Compaq generally markets its Presario lineup of notebook computers to the home and home-business user, some models will handle far more demanding tasks and applications just as easily. Powered by a potent 1.13 GHz Intel Pentium III CPU and an enormous 512 MB (expandable to 1 GB) of RAM, the Presario 2710US notebook is one such machine.

Weighing in at a substantial 7.9 pounds and sporting an 11.02-by-13-by-1.65-inch profile, the Presario 2710US is markedly larger than several of its competitors. Compaq does, however, put that extra size to good use. The unit is literally loaded with drives, including a large 20 GB hard drive to handle permanent storage needs, an 8X DVD-ROM drive to play movies, and even a 3.5-inch floppy disk drive for older or smaller programs. The 2710US also takes advantage of Compaq's new FutureBay II technology, which allows users to install and swap additional optical devices such as CD-RW and DVD drives or CD-RW/DVD combos into a spare bay. In the case of the 2710US, that bay is already loaded with an 8X (write) CD-RW drive for reading and burning data and audio CDs.

There's one other reason for the 2710US being as big as it is. At a full 15 inches, its TFT active-matrix XGA viewing screen is nearly a full inch larger than the norm. That's good news for anyone who wants to get a better look at their programs, but in particular for multimedia enthusiasts. Certainly anyone into movies or music will also enjoy the benefits of the unit's capable ATI Mobility Radeon M6 graphics card and Dolby-certified JBL Pro Audio bass reflex speaker system.

The 2710US sports enough ports to accommodate virtually any form of expansion and exterior connection. The unit features two USB ports for plug-and-play peripherals such as joysticks, an S-video, TV-out port for television output, a PS2-style port for an external mouse or keyboard, a single parallel port for devices such as printers, a VGA port for external monitors, an internal 56K modem and 10/100 Mbps Ethernet network connection, a speaker-out and microphone-in port, a multipurpose PC Card slot, and a QuickDock connector for ultrafast hookups of additional accessories.

The 2710US keyboard section offers 88 full-size keys, an array of one-touch e-mail, Internet, and multimedia controls, a four-way Internet scrolling tool, and a touch pad. Power is supplied by a high-capacity lithium-ion battery and regulated by Intel's SpeedStep technology, which lowers processor speed and thus reduces battery drain whenever the unit is not plugged into an AC outlet.

To help get you started, Compaq has installed the Home Edition of the Windows XP operating system and an assortment of useful software applications, such as Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0, Microsoft Works 6.0, Microsoft Money 2001, Norton AntiVirus, Roxio Easy CD Creator 5.01, InterVideo WinDVD 3.0, and a one-year subscription to Microsoft Encarta Online Deluxe Encyclopedia.

Infamous heat sink.......2006-08-23

I've had a lot of laptops in my career, and this one is by far the worst. I've been waiting for windows vista to come out before I buy a new laptop, so I've had the chance to get very well aquainted with this machine. I've figured out how to manage the computer so that it doesn't overheat and die on me--basically, I cannot run anything that takes up a lot of memory. No games, multimedia programs, interactive websites...This computer get hot fast and shuts down without warning. I thought it was only my machine at first, but I've found out that the problem is common and that compaq offers a heat sink repair kit that doesn't really work either...I recommend against buying one of these machines unless you have no other alternative or you get it for less than 100 bucks.

Compaq 2710US , The good , the bad and the ugly.......2005-08-20

This product has been a nightmare for me.
I purchased it new from Amazon and I was very happy with it at first. The screen was very bright for laptops of that era.
It came with the usual battery and you were able to put a second battery in the futurebay. So I was able to run 6 hours without plugging in, something unheard of for laptops of that time period. After awhile, I started to notice the fan sounding very loud. It seems to have two speeds, normal and the turbo mode which is the laptop equivalent of a jet engine. It was so loud, that when I used it in the Mountain View library, I cleared out a wide berth around me. After a year when it was out of warranty I had the very typical problem reported of it overheating and shutting down after a few minutes and the computer was completely useless. Since I had a dual boot machine and it shutdown in Linux too I was able to ascertain that it was a hardware problem.

Since it was out of warranty, I decided to take it to a local small repair shop called CompuRun as I like to support the little guy. This turned out to be a near fatal mistake. After paying him a couple of hundred dollars, he correctly determined that this was caused by the heatsink detaching from the processor. However, instead of getting the right repair kit sold by Compaq for this he jury-rigged by gluing the heatsink on, a solution that only lasted a few weeks. After I knew what the problem was I was able to determine from HP user forums the problem was very common and that HP actually had a retrofit kit for this problem. I then tried to contact HP support and tried to have them fix this problem for free since this in my opinion was a design defect.

Staying on the line to HP support which is all in India is enough to drive anybody crazy. They put you on hold for a hour and then you get some guy in India who can't escalate a complaint to anybody. Just forget about calling the HP service line completely.
I then wrote a letter to the president of HP at the time, Carly Fiorina and I ordered the repair kit.

I got the repair kit which cost me something like $70. The repair kit basically consists of a square of rubber very similar to what you would patch a flat bike tire with and four very long screws and four nuts to make sure it doesn't come off the processor like the original square
I then received a telephone call from a secretive group within the Silicon Valley HP that really handles customer problems. I told them the problem and without much hesitation they offered to pay the cost of this repair guy to put the square of rubber /heatsink on the processor. The story should have had a happy ending after the repair guy put the heat sink after charging me another of couple of hundred dollars, but that was just the beginning of a new nightmare. The CompuRun guy did not put the laptop back together solidly. After about a month, I had to bend the case to get it to power up. I brought it back to him again and after I argued with him extensively, he agreed to put it back together correctly. I think his idea of a warranty is a tail-light warranty.
However, when I got it back from him after he tightened everything up, he claimed the backlite had just coincidently gone out by itself, he could not repair it. Now the laptop was completely useless once again. I then sent the laptop to authorized Compaq repair for about $40 service fee and they told me it would cost $700 to repair it. I decided that the whole computer was not worth that much. After about a year, I located Moniserve in Hayward which specializes in fixing LCD/Monitors. They told me that the inverter board was fried (by my "friend" from CompuRun). They were able to locate an after market board and repair it for $110.

I still have a problem where all sounds on the machine sound like they are stuttering at the end of the sentences, but I can live with that!
So the bottom of line is if you have this repair problem contact HP in writing/calling directly to the president, use an authorized repair shop and stay away from CompuRun in Mountain View

Great features, terrible durability.......2005-07-21

Cronic heat related problems with Laptop shutting down after a few minutes of use. Keyboard issues after just a few months. Compaq/HP did a lousy job addressing cronic Heatsink issue. They made a fix and listed it on their parts website for $50.00 + dollars. I have read a number of complaints on this issue. I won't buy an HP/Compaq product again. Will sell as is for $600.00!

What do I like the most about my new (2001 model) Compaq notebook?
The quality, workmanship, and features for the "end of the model" production price! Imagine--512 RAM, 20 gig hard drive, floppy drive (educational world still operated in this mode), DVD drive, CD-CW drive, and a 15" screen that is as big as my 17" desktop viewing area!! Not to mention the 1.13 Pent III speed. What? --you want the P-4M and have a battery life of about an hour??-- This beautiful machine has a battery life of about 3.5 hours!! ...
Now, if you plan to do some serious traveling- this model may be a bit too heavy to be lugging around! Because I only go between two schools- the 7 plus pounds of this unit is no problem. Thanks to Amazon.com and their reviews for introducing me to this outstanding laptop computer.

Best Laptop..........2002-04-05

I've had 4 laptops in recent months and this is the one that blows them all away. It also has everything. Unlike most other 15" laptops available this one comes with hot swappable CDrom Burner and floppy drives. It also has a fixed DVD drive that you can use to copy cds from. The machine also has all the power and memory you'll probably need for a while, plus it's expandable to 1GB.

Unlike many machines that cost a lot more, the 2710 has impeccable build quality. Compaq really built this one right. The only coimplaint I have is Compaq support. Their support is no worse or better than any other manufacturers which is not saying much.

I have one of these in my car, and it works extremely well. With a MIC gain and RF gain that is adjustable, you can punch through loud and clear. The display is easy to read, and in outhern California I can pick up three weather channels. The memory channels are an added feature, but be sure to hook up all three wires or the channels will not be saved in memory. The lock feature is a plus, to avoid unwanted setting changes. Just get the best antenna you can to go with this great mobile radio and you're good to go. A super value for a super radio!

The only thing I can be thankful for is my kid's got this as a gift so I didn't actually have to pay fior this piece of junk.

The AM/FM reception is truly awful-when you can find a station. The antenna appears to be absolutely worthless. Sound quality is abysmal/

The tape deck makes a racket and has a pronounced hiss all the time.

The CD player works adequately and the sound is OK.

The unit is extremely fragile. The handle broke after 1 month of ownership and the CD cover not long after.

This is without doubt the absolute worst electronic consumer good I have ever owned.

This unit is so bad, I'll never risk buying anything electronic at all from Memorex. Period.

I hate this boombox, it is the worst piece of sound equipment I have ever had. The FM/AM is extremely weak, and the tape player makes this awful hissing noise, CONSTANTLY, even when the power is on but before you play the tape. The CD player is not so bad, thankfully, but thats NOT ENOUGH. Caveat emptor!!

This boombox really REALLY stinks! Do not buy! When listening to anything, the speakers hiss like crazy. Even when brand new, it hisses. At the end of a tape, it doesn't just click off, it clicks and cranks which ruins the tape and the tape player. The cd player is a peice of junk, it takes about 45 seconds to realize you have a cd in the player, and then take another 20 seconds till you can switch to the right track. We had to exchange it twice, but they both rott. Do not buy this crud, its waisting money!!!!! (It only has a ninety day refund, so buyer beware!!)

Poor FM reception and sound.......2000-12-12

I told Amazon not to offer this product any longer. Not one FM station came in without a lot of static. This is from the same room a ... panasonic cheapo radio works fine. If I put it on mono and held the antenna in just the right position I could get a radio station in. Even then, the sound quality was very poor and the simulated surround botton increased the static more. I didn't even bother trying the cd or tape deck. Don't buy this product. I had it out of the box 10 minutes and now it's on its way back.

AM/FM Reception is very bad.......2000-09-13

Don't listen to the 5 star review. I bought it, I know how bad its AM/FM reception was in Washington, DC area. The Surround Sound feature makes the reception even worse. There is only only one button for radio presets. So, if you want to switch from Preset #3 to Preset #2, you have to press the button 30 times (i.e. #4, 5, 6, ..., 30, 1). The surround mode sounds very strange and distorted. Don't waste your money!

The P915's software package includes Lexmark Image Studio and Lexmark Print Center, helping you to achieve the best print results possible. Compatible with both PC and Mac operating platforms, the P915 comes backed with a one-year limited warranty.

I have always purchased HP printers, this is not up to the same quality or standard. I eventually gave up and went out to get anotherHP. If your used to quality buy an HP. If your desparate still buy an HP.

I went from Epson to Lexmark. I got this printer this past week from (...) it was (...) and I love it. I would recomment this to anyone and everyone. Works on both Mac OSX and Windows. A must have and it's so east to put my dig cam memory stick right in the slots....
