Amazon.com Product Description

Of all the computers in the Compaq lineup, the Presario 5430US desktop may well be the most adept. Constructed only of top-level or near-top-level components, the 5430US easily handles most any application thrown its way and provides plenty of room for expansion and future upgrades. In addition to the components that come standard with the 5430US, this bundle includes Compaq's 15-inch MV540 monitor and IJ650 color inkjet printer, making this option an even smarter choice for those seeking a state-of-the-art computing experience.

Topping the unit's impressive list of features is one of today's most potent processors, Intel's 1.8 GHz Pentium 4. Although pricier than most alternative processors, including Intel's own Celeron and Pentium III and AMD's Athlon and Duron, Pentium 4 chips are generally faster where it counts most--clock speed. And of the numerous Pentium 4 processors Intel currently markets, the 1.8 GHz model is just a few rungs from the very top.

For the 5430US, Compaq matches this capable Intel processor with more than enough high-end memory to operate any program currently available and handle most any conceivable level of multitasking. With 512 MB of RAM at your disposal, it may be years until you even need to even contemplate upgrading to the one full gigabyte the system supports.

The 5430US offers something else most prebuilt computers do not--a decent video card. Packed with a generous 64 MB of video memory, the system's nVidia GeForce2 MX graphics board will comfortably operate all 2-D and 3-D tasks and pump out smooth frame rates and detailed textures at all but the absolute highest 3-D game screen resolutions. Truly serious gamers may want the additional performance perks of a GeForce3 or GeForce4 card, yet had best be prepared to drop quite a few more dollars in the process.

With the 5430US, data storage, movement, and backup should never be a problem. Its monstrous 80 GB UltraDMA hard drive offers oodles of space for even the most software-intensive workplace or gaming environment. Its 16x CD-RW drive permits fast burning of audio and data backup or data transferal CDs. Its 3.5-inch floppy disk drive supports any programs or files you might still store on a floppy disk, and its 16x DVD drive smoothly and accurately plays your favorite movies. And if you ever do want to add another drive, the unit's two spare expansion bays are ready to accommodate.

The 5430US is packed with a variety of tools to enhance day-to-day computing. A built-in 56K modem supplies basic Internet connection speed, and a 10/100 Mbps Ethernet card offers multiple computer networking and high-speed Internet potential. The system's Compaq USB Internet keyboard sports an assortment of convenient one-touch multimedia and Internet controls, and its IEEE 1394 FireWire port supports fast data transfer between computers and peripheral devices such as camcorders.

Other important amenities include four USB ports (two of which are handily positioned at the front of the case), a serial port for older mice and external modems, a parallel "printer" port, and an integrated AC97 Soundmax II Audio chip with support for Dolby Digital surround sound. Compaq has not included speakers in the package, allowing users to choose and configure their own audio setup. The list of pre-installed software includes the Home Edition of the Windows XP operating system, Microsoft Money 2001, Microsoft Works 6.0, Quicken Financial Center/Quicken New User Edition, and InterVideo WinDVD.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty well built PC.......2002-03-04

This computer, while being very well built, should have to max out the video part of the computer should have the Nvidea GForce 2 graphics system, and perhaps maybe a flat panel lcd screen. Now that would be PHAT.

5 out of 5 stars Old Faithful.......2005-09-10

I've had this comp since early '02, and it's served me well. Sadly, I think it's time for an upgrade. But on to the review! This comp was "top-of-the-line". When it was made I bought for around $1500 new. I can run Half-Life 2 at medium quality settings with the only upgrade I have is a $100 GeForce 6200, which is working even though I'm running it about 65 watts under power. Hasn't crashed or blue screened me ever. No conflics, came wired a good bit better than most other Compaq's I've seen.

All in all this rig was made to run with the best of 'em for as long as it could, and it has. But it just isn't enough for me anymore. Farewell 5430US. 5 out of 5.

5 out of 5 stars Very Efficient!.......2002-11-06

The 512 MB Ram, 80 GB hard drive does all that I expected it to do.
I can play games, and do labels, write letters, plus pay bills online.
Easy to set up and plug printers, scanners, faxes, etc into.
All the things you need to do for a business, already installed on the PC.
Very satisfied!

5 out of 5 stars Presario 5430US.......2002-03-09

The 5430US is one of the best buys around. True, it doesn't use RDRam, but Intel is switching to DDR anyhow, and I'm glad to get ram that runs twice the speed of regular memory.

The 5400 rpm hard drive makes up for lower rpm's with it's Ultra ATA100 interface. ATA100 also gets data at twice the normal rate, just like the DDR ram. It's fast enough, but you could always upgrade to a 7200 rpm drive later.

I've had my 5430US for two months now, and the only minor problem is a video card error that is common with high end cards. I have no other complaint.

3 out of 5 stars Watch out for bottlenecks.......2002-01-25

Any computer, even one with a 1.8 GHZ Pentium 4 is limited by what its slowest component is.

What is the speed of the Memory? 66 MHz, 100 MHz, 133 Mhz, 266 Mhz?? It is not 800 MHz RDRam.

What is the speed of the Hard Drive? Is it ATA133 or ATA100, is it 5400 rpm or 7200 rpm, or even faster??

5 out of 5 stars Will compete with any off-the-shelf machine........2002-01-23

This is the most advanced of the 5400 series, and ups the ante with a better CPU (Central Processing Unit, or "brain") and better graphics, which is the only area not adequately adressed by the lower end units. Replete with a massive 512 megs of RAM, and 80 meg hard drive, a 16x CD burner, a NIC (Network Interface Card) and a wonderful Intel Pentium 4, 1.8 gigahertz CPU, this will satisfy any needs I can think of today and will need no upgrading as it ships. Getting this close to "cutting edge" would have cost twice as much a few years ago, but times are changing and computers are becoming like the color TVs & VCRs of the 90s. It's a good deal for consumers.

4 out of 5 stars Perfect inexpensive PC.......2004-12-17

I've had the Compaq Presario 5430US PC for 3 years. The only problem was a hard drive that went bad one year ago. Otherwise, the PC has run flawlessly. No Complaints. In additon to the 5430US, I own an HP Pavilion m1070n. Not one complaint. :-)

1 out of 5 stars Would give 0 stars if possible.......2003-05-25

I bought this pc 2/02. After 4 mos, started slowing. 1) By 8/02 it totally crashed. Lost all data. Recovery CD didn't work. Defective chip replaced. 2)12/02 crashed again. Recovery CD failed. Lost all data. Defective hard-drive replaceed. 3)4/02 totally crashed again. Boot disk unable to boot. Recovery program I'd installed to guard against another failure said it couldn't recognize hard-drive. Problems are similar to when chip failed, so I'm assuming it's the chip again. Rather than fix it again...Bought a new pc, new brand. Avoid Compaq like the plague.

With 512 megabytes of RAM at your disposal, it may be years until you even need to even contemplate upgrading to the one full gigabyte the system supports.

4 out of 5 stars Neat little unit.......2003-06-01

For the price, size and quality its more novelty than serious printer, but its a good sort of novelty.

Pictures are small, but are on par with any other polaroid style camera. Good for scrapbooking, or checking images off LCD for digicams etc.

I bought mine in the hope it'd work with my P800 cell phones infrared, it didn't. Works fine with my nikon coolpix though.

The manual in mine says shoulderstrap included, however on the box it says it isn't,and it wasn't, not really a big deal though.

Haven't had a chance to see how easy it is to pickup film yet, but given its compatible with the joycam it should be reasonable easy.

The interface is ok, its a little terse but once you see where they were going its perfectly acceptable.

Prints come out fast, take a little while to appear.

        5 out of 5 stars Compatibility.......2003-03-16

I want to know if this product id compatible with the Fujifilm FinePix A303 3MP Digital Camera w/ 3x Optical Zoom

        Please let me know.

1 out of 5 stars Ripped off by Amazon.......2002-10-15

I bought this when they promised a $25 rebate... the rebate never came and the company promising the rebate will not respond.. amazon denies any responsibility, so they effectively baited with a non-existent rebate... don't buy from amazon if you're figuring rebates as part of the price....

        1 out of 5 stars It's true: large-capacity SM Cards don't work.......2002-09-21

This printer does not work with 64MB and 128MB Smart Media cards. I verified this on the Polaroid website (deeply buried, of course!)

        5 out of 5 stars What a gadget!.......2002-06-05

The P-500IR is a stand-alone printer that outputs digital images onto P-500 Joycam instant film. It's "stand-alone" in that it doesn't have any direct connectivity to a computer, and it takes images from CompactFlash or SmartMedia cards (the latter requiring an included adapter). Since there is no preview screen on the unit (the thing runs on the embedded P500 film pack battery, so you only need to feed the thing film), you have to kinda guess which photo you're about to print. I've been taking the somewhat roundabout route of dumping the files from my digital camera onto the hard drive, tweaking and cropping with Photoshop, and then copying select files onto a CF card, which then is inserted into the P-500IR to be printed.

Output quality is pretty good, considering that it's instant film. The image size is pretty small, but it does create some unique "hard" artefacts of digital images. I think this printer would have been a questionable investment at its original price; however, with the discount, I suspect the folks at Polaroid are going to get their money back (and then some) on the film! The five stars are given specifically for the discounted price. This printer is a "must have" gadget at that price!
