Good performance, poor quality, mediocre value.......2005-08-29
When you first get a Compaq R3000 series computer, you love it. The price-performance looks great. The AMD processor performs well. 512 MB of DDR RAM is great. The 60 GB hard drive is large enough for most users. My favorite feature is the push button to disable the glide pad.
After 1 year, you realize the quality is poor. Plastic parts begin to break and fall off. My eject buttons for the PCMCIA slots fell off, and I have never used them. The computer overheats and locks up often. The DVD drive door often opens by itself. The CD writer has never worked. After going through the technical support website, I discovered that the inability to write CDs was a known bug. After one year, there is still no fix.
Nice Laptop.......2005-07-13
As the first reviewer said - it is a blazingly fast and fairly attractive laptop. It outperforms a 3.2Ghz P4 laptop with same RAM. If you run a 64bit OS like a decent Linux Distro - Gentoo or XP X64 edition (drivers for all devices in this laptop are available for X64 edition) - you get absolutely terrific performance for a laptop.
It also operates very cool - Fan comes on only when you do continuous compiles, or other similar CPU intensive work.
The 15.4' wide screen also makes it a pleasure to use.
I recommend you get XP Professional instead of Home - reason being you can upgrade to XP-Pro 64bit for free.
I didn't give it 5 star rating because of the outdated Nvidia GeForce Go440 graphics card on it. Not that it is a problem - it works good - I get decent performance while playing games, but still it's an outdated card.
Compaq doesn't seem to be selling this exact model anymore but you can go for any Mobile Athlon64 laptop they sell.
Blazing 64 bit processor.......2005-01-02
I bought this machine for the sheer power and so many other features it has. well the processor is really fast on the 32 bit XP but it goes on fire on a 64 bit platform. im an AMD64 fan now. i have dual OS on this machine now one being linux and XP. both run awesome. The benchmark test i did with an inependent software leaves the intel processors way behind. way to go.

If you are in the market for a notebook or a desktop, check this one out.
This is truly a system you could use to replace your existing desktop. It is fast, it is efficent, it is handy.
There is a printer port and a monitor port on the back, there is a keyboard port on the right as well as an S-video on the right. That is of course in addition to the 3 2.0 usb ports and the 5 in 1 reader. It has an integrated dvd+r/rw and cd-rw. And it is ready for wireless connections.
It is also upgradeable. Although it comes with the 512, there is room to expand to 1.2. Add to the the fact that the operating systems don't yet fully take advantage of the speed of the 64 bit processor and you have a system that might at least keep up with the curve for a while.
I absolutely love it. I haven't been disappointed by anything as of yet.
A powerhouse of a notebook!! .......2004-08-05
I recently ordered this item direct from Compaq (shipped from China but only took 2 days), build time was about a week. Since I ordered a custom built, I got the 2.2ghz (3400+) Athlon 64 chip, 1GB ram, 60gb, 15.4" (upgraded resolution to 1680 x 1050), upgraded 8 cell battery to 12 cell battery, upgraded to 4X DVD+R burner.
Pros:
- LIGHTENING FAST FOR A LAPTOP - fastest I've ever used or seen.
- Great photo editing - images resize immediately and you can load many photos at once (I upgraded to 1GB RAM which really helps).
- Very attractive notebook, silver inside and dark black/blue outside.
- Screen is wonderful, bright, and viewing angle is excellent.
-Burner is fast and hasn't let me down.
-Keyboard is full size and very comfortable.
-Power cable is on the back - why should I have to see it anyway?
-3 USB 2.0 allow for very high speed transfers. 2 USB on left, 1 on right.
- Boots up fast, easy to get out of hibernation.
-GREAT BATTERY LIFE. Best I've seen, especially compared to a Dell I barely got 1 hour out of! For such a speedy notebook, when you hibernate it, it really conserves. All night in hibernation, away from A/C, I think it went down only 8% or less!
-SOLID notebook, doesn't feel cheap or flimsy.
-Speaker controls are nicely placed on the right hand side of the notebook. CD-RW/DVD-R is on the left side.
-Trackpad's scroll area is convenient and easy to use. It's also nice you can turn off the trackpad so when you're typing you don't accidentally hit it.
CONS:
-Why doesn't the built in media slot have a compact flash slot - the most common type of media? It would have been very handy.
- I use an external mouse, but when I use the trackpad's buttons, they're noisy.
-It's a bigger notebook, you'll notice it's size/weight, but how do you expect to get a powerhouse without having a bigger notebook?
-No other complaints.
Overall, I'd rate it a 9.5/10. First the speed is going to amaze you, then compare to other manufacturers, and you'll be amazed the deal you got.
PS - one note - I got XP home preinstalled, I thought when I got the notebook I'd upgrade to XP Pro (I already have a copy). It won't let you, the drivers for XP Pro are not on the notebook. I called tech. support and they said your hard drive is corrupt now and you have to reinstall. Luckily, I didn't install anything important yet. There's no huge different between Home and XP (besides networking) and I really don't feel like giving Microsoft another $50 of my hard earned $. I just would have liked to know I couldn't install Pro later.
Don't compare this to an Athlon "XP" notebook, it's not the same. Athlon 64 is much faster than Athlon XP. This is the Athlon "64" chip, allowing for constant 64-bit processing. It blows P4 chips out of the water with "hyper threading", which isn't active ALL the time. The Athlon 64 bit chip is! This is the future of notebooks! Athlons have always been speedier than P4's for much less money! You won't be let down.
This powerhouse of a notebook is so fast I still can't get over it.
PS. #2 - don't buy the service plan in stores like Best buy or even Circuit city. If you do buy a notebook from those retail stores, call Compaq/HP up and ask for THEIR service plan. For $299 (less than Best Buy) you can get "3-year HP Accidental Damage Protection with Express Repair extended service plan
Protect your investment from all forms of accidental damage for 3 years!". That includes droppings, spills, falls, surges, collisions, etc. If I was going to waste money on a service plan, it definitely be Compaqs Accidental and EXPRESS REPAIR than stupid Best buy's rip off for $350 that doesn't cover the battery or anything accidentally. And I've heard horrible things about their repairs - takes forever, months, they're general idiots!
Buy from Compaq directly, you'll be happier!

Right off the bat on installation the driver is not signed off by microsoft, thay say continue anyway---I did even though I did this with a creative product and it screwed up my computer had to do a complete format and recovery, they care not about the hrs, hrs, and hrs of your time to fix there garbage products. Back to the scanner, noticed a smell after install, it was coming from the scanner, took it for a new item being used for first time. On a test scan the scan was ok and quality so so but I could tweek it out if I had a chance. After a few scans the scanner would only scan 1/2 of the item. (Travel only 1/2 way down the glass).. The smell was the stick on tape they use to hold the glass up to the unit. the glass was coming loose and falling down, the light would hit the glass about 1/2 way through the scan and get stuck then return. I can fix things, and I probably could of got some good two sided tape and replace the factory tape, ya, would of worked but to think that they would use tape to hold the glass up, with no other back-up is a real joke. Shame on you Microtek and thank god for these user reviews. And don't forget about that not signed off driver that comes with the soft ware. Do your self a favor and check out that canon scanner with 64 reviews (Good one's) Cost's $10 more.
Cheap Cheap Cheap!!.......2003-10-14
The main thing I wanted to do with this scanner was to scan and then email my pictures to friends and family. This scanner is USB and under $... many stores!!! It's quiet and the picture quality is great for it. I have no complaints yet on it, works like a charm. Setup instructions and software were included so with most any USB you just plug and play!

Hardware Is Not Hard Wearing.......2002-02-01
I bought this cd player because it has the am/fm receiver, remote, and anti-skip function. I also bought the jogger belt separately from the Manufacturer. I used it for the first time today. At the gym, on the treadmill, the cd skipped while jogging. There's nothing special about the remote and the jogger belt proved to be too bulky when doing other stuff at the gym. The radio did not work in the gym (the gym is under a train station though). Additionally, for some unknown reason, the volume, at its highest, was actually quiet. I would only recommend the product along with the jogger belt to a walker who likes music played at an average volume.
A nice CD player but..........2001-11-14
Overall this is a decent player, but it has three strikes against it. I had such a problem with the battery case on the player. The player is designed to use both "AA" & "AAA" batteries in the same compartment. Panasonic provides an adapter piece to use with the "AAA" batteries. It sounds like a good idea, except when you try to close the back of the case with the "AA" batteries inside; it appears that you will break the unit trying to close the case. The directions provided are not very clear. I finally figured out that the case is suppose to stay partially open, thereby creating a stand effect at the bottom of the player. Daah!
Compared with the other Panasonic player I owned (SLSX469V);this player does not come with an AC adapter nor does it have an output link (allows you to hook to a receiver). You have to pay additonal money to order the adapter from Panasonic. (...)

1.5-mile most actually .......2006-01-16
I bought a pair from buy.com 2 years ago because it claims 10 miles effective distance. When we went to Vermont on two cars, we tested it on MA highway where no hills or other obstacles between us. The actual working distance is about 1.5 mile for the most. When it gets beyond that limit, the other end can't get out messages although they are visually in sight.
Plus, this item is pretty bulky to carry.
The only regret is there is no "0" star rank here.
Vibrate Alert.......2005-11-14
The first thing I did when I took the radios out of the box was to insert them into the charger. Charge them for 12 hours for the first time the instructions said. So then I left and went to work. When I came back, one of the radios was ON Vibrate Alert mode. The radio was turned off and sitting in the charging pod. It got even louder when I took it out of the charger and it would not stop till I finally took out the battery. These walkie-talkies are junk. Lousy range too.
Not Compatable.......2005-07-11
These radios are not compatible with the Motorola radios being used by my crews. They are not receiving a good signal from even 2 feet away much lest a mile or more. I would not recommend them to anyone for purchase or use.
MAJOR DISAPPOINTMENT! .......2004-11-27
Well after reading the first two reviews, I purchased these 2-way radios at Best Buy. I tested them out after getting home and found I lost contact around 1/2 mile!! Yes it says UP TO 10 miles under optimum / perfect conditions, so you figure under not so perfect condition, at least get 5 miles or so. My 1/2 mile was in your typical town / suburb type setting. Both people testing this radio was outside too. Some houses, trees..etc around. Nothing of any major concern for interuption.
I figured ok, well at least give me a few miles, but NO! 1/2 mile was my maximum distance. The weather was clear, calm and cool, and I had fresh new batteries.
I will be returning these in the morning!
Nice Radios.......2004-11-25
I compared a number of brands simultaneously and chose to keep these. I was never in the open flat environment for maximum range,still I got 6.5 miles on one test with reasonable clarity. They outperformed all the others (Cobra,Uniden,Motorola)with regard to range and clarity. Nice display too.
Two complaints: 1)The battery meter is USELESS. The low battery indicator comes on at about the same time the unit dies. 2)It does not keep the settings of channel/subcode and power setting, if the battery dies, or are changed.
You cannot see the approx. battery strength as with the Motorola. Keep spare AA batteries on hand, or charge every night. Still Great sound. I thought better clarity than Motorla and Cobra. Uniden was also a nice radio, as 2nd choice!

But it didn't work for me. Every time I plugged a device in to it, my laptop crashed with a "blue screen," and I had to wait for a reboot to use the device.

The device worked fine for two weeks then it made my laptop crash every time I had it inserted. Thank goodness removing the device brought me back. I spent hours trying the ideas from the Micro tech. Nothing helped. Its junk.

I was a bit worried after reading the negative reviews of this card but it works fine, and for the price
<$30 I have no complaints - it does the job.
Noted behaviour:
Running under XP - it does not require the drivers that ship with it - seems to run fine with the XP default drivers or with the shipped (non-XP certified) drivers on CD.
Running a USB2 external disk (ION) that draws power from the USB port requires that you plug in the external power adapter for the card (it ships with it) to supply sufficient power for the device. If you don't plub in the adapter there are no warnings issued - the external drive just fails to be detected and configured, although all the ION power LEDs are on (if you listen closely you realise the disks aren't spinning). This may lead you to believe that the card and/or the external device is not working.
XP sometimes complains about power surges exceeding specs on the USB hub when you plug in the AC adpater or the external drive, but the USB managemnt spec seems resilient enough to detect and handle this - in other words, no hardware smoked. The caveat is that XP says "click here" to resolve the problem and it doesn't - XP appears to shut the port or ports down so you need eject the card and re-insert.

I bought this hoping to upgrade to USB 2.0 and it hasn't work at all. I haven't been able to troubleshoot and thier website doesn't even support this product. It is supposed to come with a 3.5 disk that contains the driver but it wasn't included. Micro Inovations sucks. Be sure to check for support before you buy any product from them. Better yet don't buy anything from them and hopefully they will disappear.
