The Basics

This system hasn't had a single glitch since I got it -- like Taylor, I spent some time removing unwanted software, and there's a ton of it.
I've been doing lots of Photoshop work on it,and it speeds along with no problems. I'm very happy with the 250 gig HD. I would say the only thing that this configuration is missing is the dedicated DVD player -- it has a DVD Writer, and the second drive is a CD-ROM.
The media reader is a little on the slow side and is very apparent when transfering 6 and 8 megapixel RAW files.
The system runs very quietly, even after 2 or 3 days of not being powered off.
Overall, I highly recommend this system.

I just bought this computer from our local Military exchange. I am overall pleased with it. I live overseas and was able to quickly connect to the internet with a local ISP in minutes. I tend to run several programs at once for photo editing and custom projects, and I love that I can switch between programs with no drag time at all. The large video card has enable us to finally play MOH games that our old system couldn't support.
My only issue is with all the pre-loaded stuff. I dislike Norton because it continually pops up in the middle of tasks and is as annoying as using IE.... but I won't get into that. I also don't care for the compaq organizer that pops up. However, going into add/remove programs fixes this quite easily.
I also delete all the hot deals, AOL... another annoying browser/isp/pia....
Overall this computer gives you alot for a decent price.

Modem Problem-System Lock Up Problems.......2006-01-14
I bought this computer from Circuit City. When I attempted to setup the system I had trouble from the moment I turned it on. The system froze over and over and I had to manually hold down the on-off switch until it turned off and then restart the system. After numerous attempts it finally reached the desktop. I then tried to use my old ISP account by putting in the disk I had for NetZero. The system loaded the software but then locked up again and I had to reboot the CPU again. When the software finally was loaded I tried to connect on line and received an error message saying the port was busy with another ISP. I then removed NetZero and set up the AOL free trial included on the system. It locked up again. I then called Compaq/HP support. I have spent the last 3 days working with 6 different techs,3 case numbers and numerous hours. Four of the tech just tried to push me off and not help much. While two honestly tried to solve the problem. Today the last tech finally came to the conclusion that the modem was bad. They are sending me a new modem which I have to install Monday. I would not recommend this computer to my worst enemy. I'm stuck with it for now unless something else goes bad. Then I plan to send it back for a replacement or refund. My previous system was a Compaq and it has worked great. I'm no expert but I do know my way around a system pretty good. I'm careful and only attempt what I am confident with, but this system is junk.

I'm saving up to get this one from Amazon's safe online ordering. But I talked my sister into buying this machine from Amazon 4 months ago, and it is just fantastic.
The Media Center OS is the best that Microsoft has offered the Home owner and enthusiest, ever. It is so much easier to use than other operating systems, very intuitive.
Be certain to add the View Sonic 17" or 19" LCD Flat Panel Monitor, your eyes will thank you, and it runs cooler and uses less electricity and space, than the old CRT tube type monitors.
She also added the three piece speakers she found on Amazon and they sound better than her Home Entertainment set up.
Amazon shipped much sooner than promised, and the product arrived in perfect condition, unlike the local chain stores that expect you to buy some damaged and dropped container.
In some of the factory specs on the main page incorrectly lists the standard 512 RAM and 160 GB Hard Drive that you see offered elswhere. Amazon's offer has twice the RAM, (1 GB), and has a 250 GB Hard Drive and a better price than others. These are the most important upgrades for any user.

This is one of the best cd players that I have ever used. It will not skip when jogging nor will the batteries fall out because they are mounted on the inside. The headphones have a great sound will excellent bass. The case is made of metal for the most part which brings up the weight but helps a lot when it is droped. The only downsides to this player are that the clips for holding it shut are plastic and not very durrable, and after awile the headphones start to hurt the ears.

I've had this discman for two years, maybe a little more, and it is incredibly durable. I listen to it constantly - when I'm exercising, walking to school, sleeping, doing homework, etc. and it has always performed without fail. I've dropped it numerous, numerous times, even on the cement, and no damage has been done. I've worn it in heavy rain, dropped it in the water, and it still works.
If you are looking for a quality discman, this is definatley the best choice out there.

i have the panasonic slsw860 witch is the same thing as this execpt it doesnt come with the brainshaker headphones and it is good it doesnt skip at all i fell off my bike or u could say i was launched off of it and nothing happend the sound is also good but not as good as it could be cause the skip protection degrades the sound its got the phatest cover and its made out of metal witch is real good if your thinking about getting the sony des51 dont cause the screen goes out and it never turns on i had one belive me and thats why i got this one and it made in japan so thats real good you always want that in a cd player so make the right choice
Extreme listening.......2000-05-30
I am a rough guy. I go back packing rock climbing sailing and do almost any extreme activity. I take this cd player every where that I go and it hasn't missed a beat. I have destroyed five cd players before I got this one and in 6 months I haven't had to buy a new one. The head phones are also really cool, the remote is built in and can be easily used. The price is well worth the quality of the machine. If you need a good solid cd player this one is the way to go.

What this camera lacks in size and looks, it makes up in malfunctions and errors, as well as hours of wasted time.
When I first tried the camera, I unsuspectingly followed all instructions to the letter, and used my camera as directed, not realizing that writing manuals that explain the product is not a big fad over in indo-china.
Not only does this camera have an even lower pixal rate than I had expected, it will not upload video, and the only way to capture video is to have the cord attached to the computer the whole time. (This is NOT how it's supposed to act.)
SOOOOOOOOOOOOO, I called tech support. Good thing that their support agents know anything at all about the camera. Oh wait.
They don't. The tech support agent after reading the three suggestions in the troubleshooting section of the manual, came up with the amazingly clever suggestion of restarting the computer. I told him it still didn't work, so he told me that my camera worked properly and hung up. Quickly.
Don't bother going to their website for help, because their trouble shooting archives contain about two suggestions,none of which seem to be even remotely connected with the ic720dm. As their website says:"This is another high quality & innovative product from Micro Innovations for the 21st Century & beyond!"
Bad light sensitivity, works reliably........2005-06-21
The camera installed easily on a Windows XP Pro machine.
It can capture live video using any standard application (i.e. AMCAP, VidCap32, or their own applications that come with the camera).
But: The live video only captures about 12 frames per second, which is terrible. If you want any semblance of "live video" in your captured movies, get another camera.
I did adjust all the exposure settings, and worked with the USB bandwidth and other features. But nothing gets the framerate better except turning off the automatic exposure ("AE" on one of the control panels).
If you do this, and then restart your capture program, the camera will achieve a solid 30 fps, but the picture is so dark that it's useless. You cannot push up the brightness enough to compensate, and you can't possibly get enough light into a normal room to solve the problem either.
Background: I'm a programmer. I've tested dozens of USB cams to see how well they work for videoconferencing. The problem of producing poor framerate, or having poor dark/light sensitivity is very common, especially with the cheap cameras like this one.

Some of you are probally confused about this product since some are giving 5 stars and others 1 star. Well i will tell you right now why. Because the burner will destroy DVD's if they have certain file types. The one's giving 5 stars didn't use those file types, or just blame their software. Its not like im using bad software, i've used nero 6 and 7. Those work perfectly with other drives. Don't blame the software, as many reviewers have. The problem lies in the drivers.
It can read the most scratched up disks, it can write cd's perfectly, but it can't write a load of movie files! The only way to get around this is convert the movie file to another format, and if you have to buy software to do that, its already more expensive then better drives. Not to mention the loads of time wasted and lack of quality/space suffered when converting a file.
Treat this as a DVD/CD combo drive. Reads DVD's, Writes and Reads CD's.
Good Reader bad Writer.......2004-11-28
According to the review on www.tomshardware.com this DVDRW can read old and scratched DVDs and this is absolutely TRUE. But writing skills is amazingly poor. I already exchanged one because smoke was coming out from it. New one damaging during the recording process 40% of DVDs. Nero some times showing funny message. "Focus Tracking Error ...". Validation of recorded disks failing in 99%. It doesn't matter DVD is brand name or generic.

I'm using this drive with Linux (so none of the software issues the other reviews talk about apply anyway) and am very happy with it. cdrecord worked just like with my old burner, and for dvd's growisofs worked without any configuration whatsoever on my part! DVD-RAMs even burn fine even though the man page for growisofs doesn't mention DVD-RAM!
(I'm using kernel 2.4.22 on x86, you may need to load some modules with modconf for your configuration).

Last week i updated the driver and it stopped working! I then uninstalled the driver and reinstalled the old driver but it would still not work. Could read discs but would not write at all with "General I/O Error". So i called tech support but there was nobody answering the line. Terrible, terrible.

all formats supported. have not tried the dvd-ram yet though.
burn speed is good. loaded the software/drivers no problems with dma transfers enabled and ASPI layer up to date and installed correctly.
cdr write is rather slow by todays standards. cpu utilization is much higher then my friends pioneer a06 and sony. software is lacking, but for the price complaints are few.
