I had one of these and it worked great for a while, and almost considered buying another one. One day I plugged it in like normal to the same computer I used it on all the time, and it caused my USB port to start smoking, the converter started clicking and damaged the hard drive I had plugged into it. Cheap way to damage a lot of equipment.

I plugged this into a 3.5 inch IDE drive. I started getting error messages immediately. I could transfer about 100MB and it would stop. It was a frustrating experience. I sent an e-mail to the manufacturer tech department but didn't hear anything from them. I would return it if I could figure out who to return it to. I gave it one star because I was able to copy some files.

Real multi-purpose!.......2007-04-07

I've now purchased three of these devices. I got one for myself couple months back, and two for my friends since. It's come in quite handy at work too.. so much so that they ordered a couple for our offices! It's just so compact and useful. Definitely a great buy!

This product killed my USB ports, and before I knew what was going on, it killed 2 SATA disk drives. There is NO manufacture contact info in the brochure and there is NO product warranty of any kind mentioned in the brochure. BUY AND USE AT YOUR OWN RISK! I'd give this product -10 stars if I could!

Good buy.......2007-03-22

This enclosure is fairly inexpensive for a 5.25" and it snugly holds my DVDRW Drive. I also put a 3.5" HD in one. There aren't any mounting screws with it which is a little irritating (only reason I didn't give it 5 stars). Cooling fans can be a litle noisy, but not too bad. An auto-off feature would have been really nice too. Despite my nit-pickyness I'd say its worth every penny. THey look nice, are flexible, and are giving me worry free performance.

It's a very nice looking enclosure & very easy to open and attach my dvd burner. The biggest problem with it is the fan noise. It's very loud, crazy loud. They could have used a universal power cord to make it easier to replace in case of loss.

I'm keeping it though... so it works for when I need it.

Pretty good enclosure for the price.......2005-11-08

I just installed my new hard drive into this enclosure and it was very smooth and easy. The tray is very useful when installing the drive. It took about 5 minutes to complete the installation. It is very compact and light. Heat dissepation is also pretty good. Computer recognized it immediately, however your hard drive needs to be formatted before you install it or you need PartitianMAgic software to format inside this enclosure. The reason I gave 4 starts is the after installation the hard drive is kind of jiggling inside the enclosure. I put a small piece of paper towel and it got rid of the problem. This enlosure compatible with both 100/133 hard drives and there is no limit to harddrive size you can put in it. Overall I recomend it.

Works for me........2007-04-11

I have one of these enclosures with a 100GB Hitachi drive. It sits on top of my Mac Mini (OSX 10.4.9). It comes on when I power up the Mini in the morning, then goes off after a few minutes. At 5:01pm SuperDuper! fires up, the drive comes on, and SuperDuper! backs up my internal drive to the Hitachi. After a while the external drive goes off again. I use the provided USB cable which also supplies the power for the drive. The enclosure I have has the Prolific USB chipset, which at one time was not recommended by the SuperDuper! folks, but it seems to be fine (maybe there was a problem at some time in the past, but it seems fixed now).

I think the product is fine. It works OK with most computers I've tried. However, Windows 98 and 98se do not "understand" USB drives natively. You have to install drivers. I don't blame the manufacturer for that, so the product is still worth 4 stars.

As a side-note, you may find this particular hard drive enclosure to be slightly better than some others, because it can be fully USB-powered. So, no need for a power cord (although one is available, optionally).

I have this enclosure running with a Toshiba 120GB hard drive without any problem whatsoever. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is that I had some trouble getting the drive to be recognized the very first time, until I formatted the hard drive.
I had to use the Computer \ Drive management tools in order to see and format the drive for the first time. It might be normal with my version of Windows, but I don't know any better.
One warning: This enclosure comes in two versions, one for an IDE hard drive (HD-211-U2) and another for a SATA hard drive (HD-211-eSATA).
Make sure you get the one that matches your hard drive.
If you already have an older hard drive, it is probably and IDE type.
If you are going to buy also a new hard drive, then I suggest going eSATA which is the new way of "things to come" in the computer world (supposedly much faster data transfer).

Save your money unless you need a good doorstop........2005-10-22

This thing is a piece of junk if you want to run it on a Mac. The package claims that it supports Mac OS 8.6 and above. I don't know about the 8.6 part but it sure as heck doesn't work on OS 10.3. I've taken mine back to the store that I got it from and I'm using the money for a REAL Hd enclosure. Coolmax should change their name to Junkmax. One star is too kind for these criminals but Amazon forces you to use at least one...

I purchased this enclosure for my Plextor 716A DVD RW Drive. Installation and connections were simple. After plugging it in and turning it on, my new Dell PC with Vista Basic loaded the necessary drivers and we were off! I didn't even need to use the loading disc supplied!

The DVD drive functions flawlessly through this enclosure, whether I am sending data to my PC or burning DVDs. I haven't had a single error yet! The Plextor seems to work as fast now as when I had installed inside my old PC. Operation is smooth and quiet, the enclosure stays nice and cool.

I can recommend this product with no reservations. I give it an A.

Careful - Burned up 2 Hard drives.......2007-06-08

At first, I really liked this product, I used the firewire port exclusively until I found an eSATA PCI express card for my laptop.

After a few months, a 500GB drive froze and was lost ... I accepted it as "one of those things" and bought another drive (different make). After a couple months, this also froze the exact same way.

I used mine quite a bit on the road and to be fair, it's possible the power connection may have had something to do with it, but after $400 in lost drives, data and time, I went with Nexstar enclosures again which have been durable and now offer all 3 interfaces.

PS: I recently bought a PCI express eSATA card and it's at least 3x faster than firewire in true data transfer rates ...

I too was attracted to the flexibility of this enclosure: ATA and SATA inside, USB2, FW400, SATA outside. Turns out its pretty cheap, the case itself is not designed to be taken apart and reassembled, the connectors are pretty weak and you can not use more than one at a time via Firewire. That was the show stopper for me. USB mode was also pretty slow and it has no fan so it gets HOT, which is bad for your drives. Pass this one over and get a enclosure for your specific needs or expect to spend more money for good quality.

Good for a single backup drive..........2007-01-04

If you plan on just putting one hard drive in it, screwing it shut, and leaving it alone this is a great drive enclosure. Me being a computer tech, I was planning on using it as an enclosure to backup clients data or for emergency data recovery. After about the third time of unscrewing those tiny screws they started to strip out, and after about the tenth time I ended up destroying the unit trying to get it open.

The enclosures electronics have always worked good for me but have never tested the external sata connector.

Dead on Arrival!.......2006-11-05

I have to confess that I didn't purchase this item through Amazon, but through a local electronics megastore (F*y's). I was drawn to purchase this unit because of the flexibility of connecting via SATA, USB2.0 or firewire, and the unit handling both IDE and SATA drives.

However, after connecting everything up, I tried to power up the unit and NOTHING! You think they'd at least check to make sure these units turned on before they ship them. I don't know whether the problem is in the AC cord or the power adapter, but this unit is as lifeless as a brick. Not too surprised in retrospect - unlike my MacAlly PHR-100AC unit, this unit does not have a fully grounded power supply. (I always like to see grounded AC power for my computer equipment...)

Wouldn't work for me..........2006-03-09

I was looking for a simple solution to backup some files onto an old 2.5 inch hard drive. This product would have been the solution if it had worked.

My laptop has the slower USB 1.1 - so I was really interested in the firewire connection. (It's an HP pavilion running Windows XP Home).

Well the USB 1.1 connection worked fine with the device... but I never could get the firewire to work. I tried google searching for advice, visiting the manufacturer's web page, and contacting the manufacturer. The manufacturer's web site is pretty limited (written in broken english) and the google search turned up some people who had similar problems with the device, but no solution. The manufacturer did respond to my email within 24 hours, but it was a 1 sentence response suggesting I update my 1394 device driver (which I had already told them I had tried).

Anyway, I've purchased a lot of products from Amazon, and this is the first one I'm returning. So maybe my experience was a fluke... but thought it might be worth sharing with other buyers.

Does So Work On Macs.......2005-11-14

Not sure what kind of Macs these other reviewers are talking about, but I've used this enclosure on everything from G3 iBooks to G5s without a single problem.

Installed Tiger on the 80GB disk inside it and use it as the Startup Disk on my old 500MHz iBook G3 every single day.

Well designed, well made. I use it via USB on my ThinkPad as well.

At only $25, absolutely one of the best buys I ever made.

I recently bought this on Amazon. After it arrived, I could hardly force the hard drive in, small items were falling out during this process. After connecting it using my USB connection, I did not see a thing. My computer did not recognize it. I tried this and that, in vain. I returned the item 5 minutes ago.

Bought this when I upgraded my Toshiba notebook's hard drive. I placed the new drive in the enclosure and copied my original drive over. Since my notebook only has USB 1.1 ports, I used the firewire connection. I then replaced my original drive with the new drive. Everything worked fine.
The enclosure itself appears sturdy, it does everything it's supposed to do, and the price is more than fair. I especially like the flexibility of using either USB or firewire (both worked on my computers with WinXP). Just remember, no matter what connector you use, you have to plug in the red USB cable - it supplies power to the enclosure.

Firewire does not work for Mac.......2005-08-11

I should have checked the review here before buying one: I got in the same situation as "kmaletsky".
This works with Mac via USB. I rate this "*" because it claimed to be compatible with Mac, and that it has both USB and firewire, but it didn't say that it doesn't work for Mac via Firewire.

The alternative that works with Mac seems to be Macally PHR-250CC Aluminum 2.5" USB + IEEE 1394 External Enclosure . I am going to try this out.

Iogear Ion 2.5" USB2.0 / Firewire Enclosure appeared to be a good alternative and I was almost going to get it but in the last minute I found that it does not boot on Mac.

The RM7300 comes in a stylishly sculpted anodized-aluminum enclosure with a curved silhouette. The unique shape breaks up internal standing wave resonance, helping create a pure, more lifelike sound, while the PowerPort venting extends and strengthens the lower midrange performance to ensure a seamless blend with the subwoofer output. The resulting midrange minimizes the "hole" between the satellite and sub frequencies, helping male vocals sound rich and full rather than thin and weak (as with most other sub/sat systems).

The RM7300 is equipped with dual 4.5-inch polymer composite midrange drivers for clear, distortion-free midrange and a high-performance 1-inch silk/polymer composite dome tweeter for sweet, crisp highs. The drivers combine to produce a frequency response of 65 Hz to 25 kHz, and work with amps rated from 20 to 175 watts per channel. Additional features include magnetic shielding, which lets you locate the speakers near a state-of-the-art TV or video monitor without distorting the picture, and five-way binding post connections for the purest possible sound. Sounds good aestheticaly lacking.......2007-09-20

The build quality is very good. The sound quality is good, although a little light in the bass department as expected. I bought them as a cheaper alternative to the RM30. I wall mounted 3 of them next to my plasma tv as fronts and center. The titanium color is three shades of gray-metalic. I believe that the darker pewter color choice would have been a better match for my plasma.

I am not an audio expert, but I was amazed at how clear the sound is out of these speakers. They carry a great punch for there size. I would definitely recommend these to anyone looking for a small, powerful, well made speaker.
