1 out of 5 stars What a piece of fecal matter.......2006-01-10

I have finally taken a hammer and smashed the zen into tiny little pieces. Good bye you horrible heafty, unreliable, gadgety/paperweighty thingy

I was determined not to get an ipod, apart from the fact that everyone has one (Apple hog 80% of the portable MP3 market) and I like to give the underdog a go, but creative have done themselves NO favours.

They have the worst online customer services I have ever encountered (apart from a curry's or a dixons store)and after 3 months of trying to resolve the zens issues I beat the snot out of it.

My player developed issues with resetting itself every time I used it. Now for a collection of music about 50GIG strong this became a little annoying as it would take 25 minutes to reset.

Now I am no fool, I know how to look after my kit, but the little tosser at the creative desks told me I had been rough on the player... without even looking at it!

So no, I would not recommend this player.

If you were unlucky enough to purchase one either return it or take it for a long drive to the woods, tell it you are very dissappointed in it, usher it gently outside, shut the door and drive away quickly leaving it to rust for all eternity.

DIE ZEN DIE!!!

4 out of 5 stars Mine lasted over 2 years, not to mention it held it's value very well........2005-11-14

This is a good player if you understand that:

1) It's a hard disk based music player that's not to be roughed around or exposed to temperatures of extreme heat or cold (i.e. winter, and hot humid summer). Anyone who does not understand HARD DISK technology, it's strengths and weaknesses should STAY AWAY from all hard disk based MP3 players. Hard disks are mechanical devices, not solid state!

2) It's not a player you use for heavy exercise (running, etc) or a player to beat up, it's one you use in you car, on the bus, on a plane, taking walks, etc.

3) The player is pretty good provided you don't abuse it. button placement on the zen, while not "intuitive" as the others, you definitely grow to like it more because the interface does not get in the way, you never "accidentally" do something you really didn't intend to do.

4) If you get the attachment named: 'Creative NOMAD FM Wired Remote' Found then this is one awesome MP3 player, you may spend a bit of extra money but that fm remote is better then 99% of the other MP3 players remotes, it has an LCD, mic and everything else.

Pro's: for a player released in 2003, it holds up very well against modern players provided you dont abuse it.

Con's: VERY rarely, the unit will hang and require a reset with a paper clip (to reach the indented reset button), things like this come on modern hardware - i.e. look at your dsl or cable modem, they will most likely have a 'reset to default' or 'reset' switch on them. Note that because all MP3's are not encoded the same way, and since this player was released in 2003, it's not bad. I've only ever had to reset it 2-3 times during the two years I've owned it.

1 out of 5 stars No more Creative for me.......2004-07-06

Had this for 7 months. Kept it in excellent condition but after 7 months it crapped out. I had to pay shipping and deposit $20 with Creative to have them look at it. They told me it was a bad circuit board and it would cost me $125 to fix it. I told them to keep the $300 paperweight. Then 2 weeks later they call and ask me if it is correct that someone (I assume inside Creative) authorized to charge my account to fix it. I told them that if I see any charges on my account I will contact Better Business Bureau. I used to swear by Creative products. Now I just swear AT them.

1 out of 5 stars Run, don't walk from this item.......2004-05-29

I have a huge library of mp3s that I maintain on a 40 gig mp3 player. I wanted to upgrade, and the Creative 60 looked good. Two insurmountable problems: 1) the unit's manual is provided as a pdf file, but in order to load it onto your computer, it assumes that you don't have Acrobat Reader (of course - this is 1960, isn't it?), and insists on installing acrobat on your computer. When it discovers you have acrobat (no!), it doesn't know what to do, so a) it screws up your current acrobat installation, and b) it fails to provide access to the manual. 2) Creative is confident that, even though you have 60 gigs of music, Creative knows better than you do how to organize it: by artist, name of song, album, year, and genre (rock, jazz, etc.) Never mind that you organized music by year (1973), function (wedding music), or specific category (Anton's favorites). In order to find a song, you must scroll through 60 gigs of songs to find yours. This is a small, sleek (perhaps a little tinny and fragile) unit, but the restrictions on organization render it useless. The old Archos 20 gig is a far more user-friendly system. The RCA Lyra 40 I now use has similar issues, but accomodates a work-around. The Creative is simply not "creative." Keep it. I'll try not to buy another Creative product.

2 out of 5 stars Important Zen Information.......2004-01-25

This player is an overall disappointment with a couple of big flaws that potential buyers should be wary of; and all readers need to know about a third party software company that resolves virtually all of the Creative MediaSource file transfer issues.

Zen Good points:

1. I achieved my basic objective; my entire CD collection is on a portable device with lots of room to store more.

2. Most MP3 players have a gap between the end of one track and the start of the next; it's annoying in music that is intended to be continuous. The Zen has minimal stoppage between tracks; when listening to music that continues from one track to the next the gap is just a hesitation - a slightly audible click; if I am not listening for the progress from one track to the next I don't even notice the click.

Flaws:

1. Creative MediaSource software is OK to rip, catalog & burn music if you are starting from scratch; but I used MusicMatch to rip my CDs before I bought the Zen (272 CDs; 3,350 tracks; 12Gb of music all ripped at 128bps) and guess what? MediaSource did not recognize my tags; my choices at that moment would have been to manually re-tag my music or re-rip using MediaSource. I don't think so. BTW, if you *are* ripping your CDs, MediaSource accesses the CDDB music catalog over the Internet and the few CDs I experimented with all provided good quality [correct & uncluttered] tag information.

2. Despite most reviewers giving kudos to the Zen for music quality, I experienced a flaw using EAX. After about 45 mins of listening there was audible static in the player. When I turned EAX off the static disappeared. When I turned EAX back on the static was also not present. Creative are *the* sound people for computers, I can't understand why EAX would introduce static. Is EAX faulty? Is my unit defective? Was I just unlucky at that moment? Was it a full moon that night? I haven't figured it out yet.

3. MediaSource is an application with serious user interface flaws. Do not underestimate this in your purchase decision. Many reviewers refer to it as "clunky" or "difficult" - heed their warnings.

4. The Zen *stores* data files, but does not allow a folder structure nor does it allow documents to be opened or programs to be launched from its disk (they must be copied to another hard drive to be launched). In other words, the Zen is not a convenient data storage device; only buy the capacity you need for your music collection (see point 2. for some sizing information). My goal of using it as a music player *and* data storage device has not been met; don't make the same mistake.

5. The Zen does not have a Stop button! You can stop playback by pressing 2 buttons, first the Pause button, then the "Next Track" or "Previous Track" button. But this is *not documented* in the Zen manual - neither the hard copy nor the CD version. To discover this I had to read about 10 online reviews (with many complaints about the lack of Stop button) before I found one reviewer who was smart enough to both figure it out & document it.

6. The Zen NX battery requires the AC adapter to recharge; it does not charge by USB cable; this is not tragic, but USB recharging would be a convenient (additional) choice. If you are buying a Zen Xtra check whether the battery recharges via USB; it does not on the Zen NX.

7. MediaSource did not install on my personal notebook. It referred to a "Microsoft Jet Database Engine" error and the install program suggested I download a service pack from the MS website to fix the problem; I did that and re-installed the software but had the same error. Creative provided e-mail support; I followed their advice but that failed, too. I experimented with installing MediaSource on 2 other computers at home and it worked fine. So it is probably "just bad luck" on my part that the personal notebook I own had this install error. However, it did motivate me to find a work-around solution.

Third Party Software To The Rescue

After much frustration (above) I found the Notmad Explorer; cute product name for software that resolves virtually all of the Creative MediaSource FILE TRANSFER & ORGANIZATION problems. I am not associated with the company, I am not providing a URL, but search for NotMad and you should find it pretty easily. This provides drag & drop transfers of music between the computer & Zen; each time it transfers music to the Zen it asks if you want to generate a playlist; it allows playlists developed in other software to be transferred to the Zen (.m3u files are used by most mp3 players like MusicMatch and Winamp, but not Creative); it doesn't care what software you use to rip or catalog your music - Creative or any other company - all my 12Gb of music were transferred to the Zen with correct tags - hooray! Notmad has other features too, but this is not an advertisement so please see the company's web site for more information ...

Conclusion:

If I knew then what I know now I would have paid the extra to get an iPod & avoided the Zen. Given that I already have the Zen the only reason I am happy with it is because of the Notmad software. And I am hoping the static I heard when using EAX was a blip ...

To summarize, I am using the Creative Zen as a mobile device; I am using MusicMatch to rip & catalog (and if I choose, download) music; I am using Notmad Explorer to move music & playlists between the Zen & my computer. The only Creative software I am using is the device driver(s).

5 out of 5 stars How many pictures will it store?.......2004-11-06

How many pictures will it store? It is the most commonly asked question from digital camera enthusiast but usually the question that is the most difficult to get a straight answer about. Well, considering I worked in the memory industry for over 7 years I can help clarify this perplexing question and do so unbiased as I have since changed industries.

The Nikon 64MB CompactFlash Card, like most 64MB cards, will store on average 71 pictures when used with a 2 megapixel camera, 53 images when used with a 3 megapixel camera, 32 pictures when used with a 4 megapixel camera, 25 images when used with a 5 megapixel camera, and 20 pictures when used with a 6 megapixel camera. These numbers are based off the assumption that you are going to shoot your images at the highest quality JPEG setting available for the camera and understand that they are estimates and may be off by as much as 10 percent due to numerous factors including the complexity of the scene being shot and the compression algorithm used by your specific camera.

I truly hope this review was helpful to you in determining whether this card is the right capacity for your specific needs.

2 out of 5 stars Nice features. Range doesn't live up to claim........2003-06-14

Love the features, but the range is not as advertised. In my test I used channel 22 on high power. 1/2 mile was about the best it could do. I bought to use playing paintball, so it should be okay for that, but I was also hoping to use it at places like large malls and theme parks to coordinate with the wife in kids. Oh well.

1 out of 5 stars 7 miles? no! 5Miles? no! 1 Mile? If your lucky.......2003-06-02

I coulnt even get 1 mile. Plain and Simple Dont waste your money. I have gotten farther range on cheap FRS Radios. The GMRS doesnt get any more range.

          2 out of 5 stars Not a 7 miler, not a 3 miler, maybe not 2 miles..........2003-05-27

Disappointing, thats about all I can say. I wasn't expecting to get the claimed 7 miles on land (who knows, it may get 5-7 on the water), but I have trouble just getting 1 mile on the land. Seems a small hill can even ruin the range. When I do get through the sound is clear, little to no squaks or breaks, and the privacy channels work well. Vibrating alert is very nice. It's just so very lacking in the range. I even took the time to register with the FDA so I could use the GMRS range legaly. Oh well.

2 out of 5 stars Great functionality, cheap design.......2007-08-14

Ok, I'm an idiot. I love the functionality of this watch and the software, but I own two of them and they are both broken. You will find that if you use this watch only in a gym then you will likely love it for a very long time. However, if you really like to get outside and do things like mtn bike, trail runs, etc this watch will not likely hold up for too long. In both cases the plastic crystal cracked, allowing water to enter the watch. I have since moved on to a T6, which is a fantastic watch, the software has more depth and complexity to it -- including the ability to profile the entire work out (including altitude change -- really cool!), rather than just displaying the results of the work out. Bottom line, buy a Suunto T6 the extra money is well spent, or wait till Suunto recalls the T1-4 design and fixes the plastic crystal.

                5 out of 5 stars Very reliable.......2007-08-07

I have been using the T3 for a year together with a heart rate belt, bike pod and foot pod. All devices have worked flawlessly and quite accurately. I just wish Suunto came out with a T3 that looks as good as their newer lineup called "core". Unfortunately, the core does not yet seem to have the HR functions of the T3. As for reliability of Suunto products, they work extremely well. Apart from the T3, I also have Suunto's Observer ski watch and their Cobra dive computer. I have had those for several years and have used them extensively. They have worked flawlessly and I have been quite happy with them.

I do admit, the T3 is somewhat sophisticated and requires a bit of patience to set it up initially and navigate through the surprisingly well laid out menus. But once you put in your vitals - height, weight, and preferences, it becomes indispensable especially in a fitness center where it keeps track of heart rate statistics (& weekly log if the stopwatch is turned on during the workout). It also folds in bike workout intensity if you have the optional bike pod hooked up to your bicycle. Here, I can look up the speed, distance, etc right on my wrist (or mount it on the handlebar if you have a buckle type strap - not the polished black strap like mine).

So, if you are looking for a watch you can use for your workouts, I would highly recommend the T3. However, don't expect its looks to match its excellent performance. I hope Suunto does not stop making excellent products as the T3 lineup. Or better yet, come out with a newer model with the following improvements:
                - Option for metal casing (titanium) with hardened crown
                - More feedback during pod pairing - especially the bike pod
                - Better instructions for calibrating the bike pod.
                - Display the HR info below the time (small font line) in the main display for more discreteness
                - Add more detail in the user manual (or split up the manual into two parts: quick start and advanced).
                - Add more product description (especially for accessory info) in the company web site (I wish I had known about straps needing to be cut for adjustments and incompatibility of clasp style straps with bike handlebar mounts)
                - Combine HR functions with a ski watch (i.e. T6, S6 hybrid in titanium casing with a wrist strap adjustible enough to wear over clothing).
                - Retain water proofing to 330 ft (not 100 ft!). BTW, I have used the Observer at 140 ft as an alternate time piece - a sports watch needs to be versatile!

3 out of 5 stars Excellent Functionality, Lackluster Construction.......2007-06-08

This watch as excellent functionality. I really like the training effect metric rather than just knowing if my heart rate is in or out of the zone.

Watch face should be upgraded to diminish scratching. I haven't had any problems with the band. It would, however, be nice if sizing did not require cutting off segments which is irreversible.

                1 out of 5 stars Suunto t3 bike pod.......2007-05-09

I tried several times to connect the bike pod with the wrist watch but was impossible. The instructions are vary basic and do not give any alternatives in case of failure or malfunctions. In conclusion I'm using the watch only for running, so it was a waste of money the extra cost of the bike pod.

Additionally, is very complicated to review the finished exercises. Despite the fact of the size, is better to spend a little more money in a certified heart rate monitor like Polar which is hundred of times more friendly for use.

4 out of 5 stars a perfect watch for the amateur athlete .......2007-04-19

I used to be an athlete about a lifetime ago(10 years ago), even though I did not have a device like the t3, I guess I didn't need it back then. But a few months ago I suffered a very bad back injury and I had a choice: either have a surgery or improve my physical fitness. I chose the latter ofcourse, so I needed something I could use to monitor my progress and help me maintain a goal: train and improve but not overtrain and injure. I did't know a lot about HR monitors and I bought the t3 because that was available to me. I didn't need altometer or barometer but I wanted a podometer so I bought the t3 along with the HR belt, the footpod and the pcpod. All in all it cost me 360 euros(around 450 $) not actually cheap.
I usually don't need instructions do get a device going but I had to study the manual for a week to understand how it works. The HR belt connects immediately as does the footpod but you have to calibrate it in order to have accurate readings of distance and speed and that could take a while. Also if your watch has been on display in the shop for a while it might need a fresh battery as the battery life is about a year. So if you decide to buy one, ask for a new battery(as I did).
Once you have the watch calibrated and have gotten used to using it, everything is a breeze. The display is good(although it tends to scratch) the light is very helpful and the switch between the modes is easy.
One thing I enjoyed also was the pcpod. When connected to the pc, you have all of your data on display, making it easy to compare and decide on your future training sessions.
I bought this watch for one reason only: I am not a marathon runner and do not aspire to be. I bought this watch to help me and protect me to improve my physical fitness level without hurting myself. The outcome was that I am pain free for 10 days now (using the watch and training for about a month). I regard this as a personal best and I haven't regretted about buying it(even though I could have used the money for physiotherapy, right?)
All in all it is a perfect watch for the amateur athlete
