1 out of 5 stars Absolutely do not buy this device.......2006-10-29

I have owned Creative products before, and have generally been happy with them: I have a MuVo I have been using for about five years, and have Soundblaster Audigy cards in my machines at home.

The Portable Media Center is a bad effort by Creative, and for several reasons:

1) It has a nice screen, and if you play WMA files with album art, the art displays. However, if you have MP3s with album art, forget it. I tried to get Creative's help with this, and got nowhere.

2) Some MP3 files will not play at all. You get the message "The item is missing or damaged. See Portable Media Center Help on your computer."

3) Some MP3s play, but with weird glitches in the first ten seconds or so. It sounds like pieces of the file are skipped over at high speed. This is repeatable (when a file has this problem, it always has the same glitches in the same places.) Creative was no help with this.

4) Periodically the machine forgets it has an internal speaker (pull the headphones out of the jack and you hear nothing.) If you reset the device then POOF, the speaker works again.

5) Though the PMC is VERY expensive ($500 for a 20Gb device that can only play Windows Media Video files?), Creative has never released an update for the buggy software. I have been checking the Creative web site for a year and a half (since I got the player as a birthday present from my wife) and they have not put anything on there since 2004. They released half a dozen updates for the Muvo firmware for my other player, but nothing for the PMC. Apple updates their iPods, why can't Creative update their expensive clunker?

6) Creative will not help you with any problem after 60 days, unless you either buy their Support option or pay them $13 for a half-hour call. They tell you to check the web site for information, but they don't even admit to the problems I have been having on their FAQs. (I know they are aware of these problems, because I have read other people's complaints about the player, but they pretend the problems don't exist.)

One comment about the player itself. The ergonomics are strange. The rocker switch on the left only works when you are in the menu system; you cannot use it to skip from track to track while playing something. The rocker switch on the right is not a "wheel" type rocker, though it is circular. There is no "up" or "down" on it, though it would have been trivial to use that for volume, which would have reduced the number of switches (and the cost of the product.) Because there is a special button to escape to the menu system, you could have got rid of every button on the right, and had exactly the same functionality. Maybe they needed a box big enough to hold the battery and hard drive, so they decided to fill the space with buttons.

There are preset buttons on the top of the unit. If you press and hold one, it will "bookmark" a song or video. Pressing the button later will return to that content. I have never had a use for this feature, and fail to understand what having four song or videos available by pressing one button is useful for. (Maybe you need theme music when you enter a room?)

The video iPod is smaller, the Archos players play all kinds of formatted video, and virtually every other player in the universe can display the album art from an MP3 when playing it. There is no reason to ever consider buying this player. I am surprised Creative is still selling it.

5 out of 5 stars Owned this for 2 years now - still works great .......2006-06-23

I bought this for my autistic son for christmas two years ago. I wasn't sure about it then but it still works fine two years later. My son is rough with this player and it can take a licking and keep on ticking. He loves music and I've loaded disney pictures and family pictures on it as well as a favorite video on it. (getting the video on it was the most difficult). Keith has been able to manuever through all the different songs and he figured out how to get the picture slide show to play while playing music. This player is a bit on the heavy side but it has been such an enjoyment for Keith. It is the best $500 I've ever spent on him. He has an ipod shuffle I bought after this but he prefers the Zen. He has dropped it and tossed it aside when the battery has died. I recharge it and sometimes have to reset it (it is computerized). But it is hardly scratched at all. The only downside is that it shows fingerprints but even that is not so bad.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent product.......2006-05-29

Terrific product. I recently bought one on eBay and I love it. I read a lot of the reviews here to help make the decision and found them very helpful. It hooks up very easily with Windows Media Player and is simple to use. I tried out a lot of programs to transfer DVDs and I found the best one to be the CloneDVD Mobile program. I have been transferring a lot of my DVD collection to a format of 320x240 and vary the size of the file to around 700MB. I've also put a lot of the videos I have downloaded from the web on the the PMC. Like people have said, the best thing to do is just set it to transfer and just go to bed. I don't understand the complaint about it not having a kickstand for easier viewing, the carrying case can also double as a kickstand, so problem solved.

I highly recommend the PMC, after reading the reviews here, I was left unsure at just how good the picture quality was...would it be grainy? pixelated? not sharp enough? All my worries vanished when I watched the first video, amazing quality, crystal clear, sharp, and very impressive.

Do some research like I did, go to creative.com and look at the PMC, read reviews on this site or at CNET.com. CNET even has a video clip showing the PMC. PCWorld.com has some good reviews.

4 out of 5 stars Very good product.......2006-04-10

I own a Media Center and I added this to watch programs. The product works great: excellent battery life, outstanding sound and nice screen output. Software is easy and user friendly and sync seamingless with my desktop Media Center. Easy to send audio to other devices (cars, home teathers, etc.)

The Cons that I found on this product are:

1. Unable to program your own playlist or to create them inside the PMCE. If its possible...not so easy to find out how.
2. You need third party software to convert video like Tv shows (mpeg) and DVDs...it is not expensive, but not included.
3. Device somehow thick. I think this is going to be an issue on the next generations. Also it is a little heavier than other products.

Overall is a great product and I am really satisfied with it. Much better to carry a protable DVD player. If you want a really cool device to hold your music and have a couple of movies to have some fun, this is for sure a great buy. Doesnt worth to pay the "list price".

Product Description

It's a digital world. A world where sound surrounds you and pictures dazzle the imagination. It's a world where the excitement of the movies is captured and brought to life on a simple five-inch disc - the size of a CD. Welcome to the incredible world of DVD. As a leader in digital technology, Panasonic made possible and forever changed the face of home theatre. Panasonic has packed big-screen excitement into the world's smallest and lightest DVD player. The DVD-F65K is a progressive-scan 5-Disc DVD-Video changer with DVD-RAM/R, CD-R/RW, MP3, WMA, HighMAT and JPEG playback.

Amazon.com Product Description

Early Adopters Pick: April 2003 The world's slimmest 5-disc DVD changer.

Turn an entertainment room into a multi-disc, multi-format paradise with Panasonic's super-slim DVD-F65K five-disc DVD changer. The player offers incredible format handling, from standard DVD-Video to DVD-R and DVD-RAM, CD-R and CD-RW, and even support for MP3 and WMA CDs. You also get high-tech features like digital re-mastering, which infuses CD music playback with interpolated high-frequency harmonics that wouldn't otherwise be present, and HighMAT (High-Performance Media Access Technology), a technology developed by Panasonic and Microsoft to ensure digital media compatibility between PCs and consumer electronics.

The deck features a progressive-scan video processor that doubles the scan lines of an interlaced signal (from 480i to 480p) by scanning all 525 lines in 1/60 of a second for each pass. The higher-density video signal (designed for high-definition and HD-ready TVs) brings a film-like quality to DVD images. Other video enhancements include Cinema Mode (which diminishes glare and improves the visibility of details in dark scenes by automatically adjusting picture contrast), Depth Enhancer (which reduces image background noise), and Hi-Speed Smooth-Motion Scan (which enables fast-forward/reverse at up to 200 times normal speed, offering a quick way to access desired scenes).

The DVD-F65K also boasts audio features like Dialogue Enhancer (which boosts the volume of the center channel during Dolby Digital 5.1-channel presentations) and an optical digital-audio output for channeling DTS and Dolby Digital surround sound to a surround-decoding audio/video receiver.

1 out of 5 stars Broke down after a year.......2007-01-12

Worked fine during the year I had it. no complaints picture good sound good. but you think if you spend around a hundred dollars it would last longer. I had a vcr that lasted over 14 years. I complained to customer service about it and they were just plain rude. I found after reading some of the good reviews that people haven't had the thing for too long. Give them a year or so and they will be writing a bad review.

5 out of 5 stars Good enough DVD player with 5 disc changer.......2005-06-13

I bought this one year back. Since then I have used it for all types of CDs/DVDs. It delivers what it says. Pretty much impressed.

1 out of 5 stars Broke down on me within 8 months.......2005-03-18

This piece of junk broke down on me within a year. It began stuttering on playback and skipping on perfectly good disks (that played perfectly in my other players). The warranty only covers parts in the first year so I would have had to pay for labor to get it fixed.

1 out of 5 stars Worked great for 9 months.......2004-12-22

In the first 9 months we had it, it was great. Picture quality is amazing when hooked up to a 50" plasma. I really love the multi-disc feature because you can watch a movie that's on more than one disc without getting up to swap discs out. This is particularly handy when you are watching a TV show.

I can't speak to audio CD playback ability, I haven't used it.

After 9 months of pretty heavy use (we don't watch regular TV anymore, almost exclusively DVDs) it decided that it wasn't going to play anymore. It now plays for about 20 minutes and then starts to freeze. There is nothing you can do correct this. Reinsterting the disc does nothing. It's even hit the point where it will randomly not recognize a disc anymore.

It was a great player while it lasted, the operation was intuitive. I only wish it would have lasted longer. I had a carousel CD player at one point that lasted for 6 years of heavy use so you can build a good carousel player.

Guess I'll give Sony another shot.

1 out of 5 stars Buyer Beware.......2004-11-13

Over the past few years Panasonic has been selling DVD players with motors that burn out after about 1 year. My player was an S35 and it lasted nine months. Panasonic has done nothing to address this situation. If you really want the Panasonic, scour the Web before you buy to make sure that there aren't a lot of complaints out there. Then cross you fingers.

I bought this body as a replacement for a highly abused and finally deceased XGM. It is a much better body in many ways. It doesn't burn through batteries for one thing. I usually have 400 ISO film or faster in it and an old Sears 60-300 zoom attached although I have an f2 45mm and an f2.8 28mm prime. It also has a Minolta Motor Drive 1 attached to it. For flash on it I use a Sunpak 433 D THYRISTOR which is TTL dedicated for Minolta cameras. This is the most manual set up that I own, I bought the original XGM and lenses in about 1985 and this body about 4 or 5 years ago. It's all seen quite a bit of use and has been very dependable. For what it is I think it is a great value.

I also own a Canon Elan II E film camera and a Canon 30d digital.

Buyer beware must be Pacific Digital's mantra. The USB 2.0 dvd burner I bought from them died in under six months. The burner, a lite-on, was fine it was their enclosure that failed. Their customer service was horrendous as was the shipping that I was forced to pay to receive replacement parts, which still have not arrived. If you are looking for a product that will give you reliable service and lasting performance STAY AWAY from pacific digital!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Very happy with product.......2005-11-12

I bought mine about 1-1/2 years ago and only paid about $230.00 for it at Circuit City. I have been very happy with it. I play music and my speakers seem just fine. For the money its been a really good product for me.

5 out of 5 stars pretty good for the money.......2004-06-07

Just picked up one of these from Circuit City. I generally like to shop at Circuit City becase the service is a little bit better than the others. Of course you still need to have your credit card waving in your hand and dress well; otherwise, no one is going to ask you what you want.

I was going to spend $500+ for a 17" 16ms LG from Best Buy but the LG was made in Mexico not in Korea. Sony looked really nice but it was made in China and it had 25ms instead of 16ms. Basically, I was out of selection. So, I took a look at the CRT but I didn't like any of them nor I was strong enough to put one of these 19" CRT in my car.

I remembered that there were couple of LCD moniters (...) for $399. So, I headed to Circuit City and found this monitor on sale. I had never heard of LiquidVideo but this monitor looked pretty bright and sharp compared to the others on display in Circuit City. This was made in Taiwan. My good old Viewsonic was made in Taiwan and it lasted for 10 years without any problem. I though since there was only a number of companies who supplies the actual LCD screen to various companies to build the LCD monitors, the name brand was not important I guessed. And there was a (...) rebate and I could carry it to my car with ease, LiquidVideo it was.

(...). I plugged this monitor and started my computer. It turned right on without any problem. It automatically adjusted the screen for my computer. Unliked my old CRT monitor that I needed to adjust this and that before I could use the monitor. The screen was bright and sharp. I checked for dead pixel and didn't find any. I then set the resolution to the native resolution (1240x1024) of the monitor. The screen got even better. (My resolution was 1024x768 before). The on-screen control was pretty good. The manual was well oraganized. I didn't have to scroll up and down liked in my ViewSonic.

Ok... screen is good and sharp and bright, and there is no dead pixel. Can't ask for anything better for this price.

The only weak point I think is the speakers. But at least it has a pair of speakers to save me some space on my desk. And I can get rid of couple wires under my desk.

4 out of 5 stars Nice for the price.......2004-06-03

OK, it's a cheap flat panel monitor. But it looks sylish, good image quality, and it has built-in speakers.

4 out of 5 stars Good for the price.......2004-05-08

I wonder if the guy from Circuit City bought the extended warranty. I had a problem with another product and they gave me a voucher, no questions asked .. and I replaced the product. But if you dont buy the warranty .. and the company goes out of business, you are dead in the water.

Regarding the monitor. I like it. It is not the greatest but for the money a good value.

4 out of 5 stars Cheap but great value.......2004-03-20

Cheap ( <$330 after Circuit City rebate) but superb picture quality, response time, light-weight but well built, and easy operation. Most other name brands are outrageously priced for same quality. 4-stars because the warranty is only 1 year and in-built speaker is not loud enough (for me). I know, I can't complain about the speakers when many name brand monitors don't have them at all. I use my old speakers. If you are cost conscious and you want a 17" LCD now and want to move on to 20+" LCD+TV later next year or so when they start pricing them right, this is the best option available now.
