The Basics

Hard Drive: The 30 GB hard drive is small in comparison to contemporary business-oriented notebooks (where 80 GB is becoming more the standard). However, it's still more than enough room for loading a business productivity suite and storing a wealth of spreadsheets, documents, and presentations.
Processor: The 1.8 GHz Pentium M (Centrino) processor is a bit old and slower than currently available processors (August 2006). It does what I need it to, mostly........2007-01-06

I actually got this through another site (refurbished) at a deep discount. The first one I had, had a defect and I had to send it back and get a replacement. The second one that I am using now, has worked fine for me for many months. The only problem that I have had is that it came with an extra A drive. I thought initially "I will NEVER need this." then yesterday I did. When I put it in, it made all sorts of groaning, grinding noises so I took it out. Then when I put it in again it refused to work. I tried everything, it just crapped out. So the A drive that I never thought I needed, and did need- now doesn't work. Other than that, I have no other complaints. It is a nice little unit at a nice little price. I don't use it for much more than surfing, blogging and doing my household budgeting- and this is the perfect computer for that. So while it doesn't "wow" me it doesn't disappoint either.

I can't say anything bad about this product. I've had it for about four years with perfect performance continuously. Even when a severe electrical storm fried the tv, phone answering machine and computer this product survived without a hitch. Haven't read any other reviews yet, but I hope everyone has been as pleased as I am.

Not Supported Very Well by Philips.......2007-01-30

I have owned this MP3 player for almost a year. It does put out great sound. However, it will not play playlists. It puts songs on the player in alphabetical order. Philips tech support and web site said there was going to be a Firmware upgrade for it, but that never happened. Now, the player won't work with Media Player 11, and Philips said if I want it to work, I need to go back to Media Player 10. The earbud headphones it comes with are too large and hurt when they are in my ears. Yes, it does drain the batteries when it is off -- I am always having to change the battery. I bought rechargeable ones, and they never register as a full battery on the player's battery meter, but maybe this is just how rechargeable ones are??

Since this player has been on the market for some time and is not supported well by Philips, I would recommend buying something else.

It would've been a decent player if it would've worked like the manual says and played playlists. . .

Very nice MP3 player.......2006-09-01

I like a lot this MP3 player, I am using in my car, the only thing (reason for a 4) is the time to copy the music, I also bought a Mini Sd (1G) but it takes life to fill this Sd.

A few pros....LOTS OF CONS!.......2006-04-09

This little MP3 player produces excellent sound and has one of the best ambient mic recorders I've ever heard, but beyond that it isn't very functional. I have yet to figure out how to make a separate playlist within the device inspite of reading the manual twice through! You can't alter the track order after the music has been placed on the device, and there a significant delay when you skip through tracks. The battery life is mediocre and that is only if you alter the power settings. WARNING: the battery in this device will drain even when its off! I left it in a drawer for two days with a brand new battery and it was dead when I tried to turn it on again.

This mp3 player was pretty good. It is durable, it has 512 mb of internal memory, it has expandable memory, an fm tuner, an fm recorder, and a voice recorder. However it alphabetizes your songs. It also sorts your songs by artist. You cannot move your playlists over from your computer. You also cannot create your own playlists.

The radio is the best part. It gets great reception. Then you can record all your favorite songs. The headphones are a piece of junk. The sound is good but they fell out of my ears. The left earpiece had a sort cord (maybe 3 inches) and the right one had a much longer one (more than 6 inches). That was also a great inconvinence. I bought 97 cent headphones from Wal Mart that work much better.

Mediocre, At Best...Feels Like A Toy.......2006-03-06

I got this player and it IS a pretty good player, but it disappoints me on enough points to make it not worth the price I paid for it.

All the good and bad points have been mentioned and I agree with them. Here are four of my specific gripes:

1. The screen is monochrome and VERY small!
2. The battery life is pathetic.
3. The "expandable" memory is MiniSD, not full-sized SD
4. The build quality is cheap...VERY cheap. It feels like a toy and the shell feels hollow. It squeaks when I press buttons and the back door isn't aligned properly.

Other than that, it's not a bad player for the gym or for doing in-line recording...I just wish the price reflected the lack of attention to quality construction.

Inexpensive, fast and reliable.......2006-05-11

Happy to refute the previous review. All hard disks are susceptible to failure -- I've had at least 4 hard disks in various desktop and laptop computers go bad on me. Fortunately, the Micronet drive was not one of them. I bought one of these drives in 2003, and I've been using it as a backup device for the past two years. It has worked flawlessly. The drive has excellent throughput, is versatile (with both Firewire and USB 2.0 connections), and runs quietly on my desktop. Highly recommended.

CRASHED after 3 months of light use!.......2006-04-08

I just finished moving about 225GB of data to this drive. DO NOT be fooled by the low cost! You will lose your data and never get it back! Consider the cost of replacing your data / media when this thing goes dead on you. There is NO tech support for this, and their website has no assistance at all for these sort of problems. I would be happy to get my money back at this point.

The data recovery folks say it will cost $800 - $2400 to recover the data, IF they can recover it.

Next time, spend for a reliable brand and avoid this junk.
