The Benefits of HDTV

Standard TVs (SDTVs) display a maximum of 480 lines using the interlaced scan method, which creates a picture with alternating lines of information.

Enhanced-definition TVs (EDTVs) display a maximum of 480 lines using the progressive-scan method, which creates an image using consecutive lines of information for a crisp, flicker-free picture.

High-definition TVs (HDTVs) display a maximum of either 1,080 interlaced lines or 720 progressively scanned lines for the sharpest possible image.

DLP technology offers a slimmer and lighter-weight design over traditional projection TVs.

Developed by Texas Instruments, DLP technology uses an optical semiconductor, called the Digital Micromirror Device (DMD), that enables light to be modulated digitally. The result is incredibly precise, high-fidelity picture quality--to the tune of a remarkable 1,000:1 contrast ratio. DLP also boasts lower power consumption, no phosphor "burn-in," and a longer product lifetime. The set's onboard digital scaling engine accepts various computer and television signals and maps them to fit within the set's native 1,280 x 720 pixels; compatible signals display video resolutions up to 1,280 x 1,024, and compatible HDTV signals consist of 480p and 720p (most DTV receivers will scale 1080i outputs to either of these formats).

Picture-in-picture (PIP) lets you watch two programs simultaneously with one image inset in one of six selectable window positions. Picture-on-picture (POP) lets you watch two programs side by side, each with its own (roughly) 35-inch diagonal image. PIP/POP is available when your main video source is set to any mode. For example, you can watch two analog TV programs simultaneously with PIP/POP by using the built-in TV tuners. And one of your two kids, for instance, can watch a movie from a DVD player or VCR in the main window while your other child watches a TV program--all at the same time. Additionally, the transparency and size of the PIP window are highly adjustable.

The TV has two separate headphone jacks, both of which are accessible from the side of the TV. One of these outputs can be assigned to the PIP or secondary side-by-side/POP window, making it possible for two people to use the TV for two totally different activities (e.g., one watches a DVD movie, the other plays a PC game). The set even includes a secondary PIP/POP remote control for this purpose.

Unlike most TVs, this set's PIP source can include progressive-scan DVD inputs and HDTV signals through the component-video inputs. And, the PIP source can be displayed using either 16:9 or 4:3 aspect ratios. DVI and VGA inputs from things such as a PC can only be displayed in the main window.

Gateway provides a broad range of inputs with independent picture settings, including two component-video inputs, one DVI interface with HDCP copy-protection compatibility, three sets of audio/video inputs that support composite- and S-video (one of which is side-mounted for easy access), and two separate RGB inputs for a PC (with accompanying minijack stereo audio inputs). The side-panel inputs are perfect for occasional hookups such as a camcorder or video-game console.

Stereo speakers with an impressive 15 watts per channel offer strong, clear sound. Bass, treble, BBE High Definition Sound, and audio balance controls let you tailor the set's sound output, while, for more spacious-sounding programs, both SRS and VivaHD3D sound processing simulate surround sound through any two speakers. There's a stereo RCA output with internally selectable fixed or variable level for routing the TV's sound to an integrated amplifier or surround receiver.

The TV supports Microsoft's Media Center PC specification.

Unrepairable.......2007-05-06

Bought mine in January 2004. Had a minor user manual error at startup that warranted a service visit before we could start using it. After that initial problem, was very pleased with the performance of the set. Outstanding picture quality and our first bulb lasted right at 10,000 hours. But, as mentioned by others the bulb replacement cost was ridiculous. I expected around $200 or less when purchasing the set. No 3rd party supply, so they basically bent you over. I bought my bulb from Visio at the same cost just to keep from handing any more money to Gateway. The color wheel bearing is now getting real noisy in the last few days. Called Gateway for a spare part. They don't sell just the color wheel, you have to buy the optical engine for $2000. Yea, right. Samsung DLP color wheels are $110 and you can install them yourself. I'll check with Visio again.

Looks like anyone who bought this set got screwed. I also went up the chain on their service line and got the Executive Review Team address. I will send my letter, too, but with their company stock at $2/share I don't expect much satisfaction. Gee, I wonder why their stock is so low.... I guess I got a lot more hours/$ than some here, but what a horrible company to basically sell us a $3000 plus throw away TV.

I will NEVER buy another product from Gateway and influence as many people as possible to do the same.

do not buy this item.......2006-10-15

I have had one for 14 months and I am now getting the flashing spoken of in a previous review. It is now a paperweight the flashing first starts a couple hours apart and the time is now that i do not even try to watch this piece of ---- any more. This was my first time buying a TV from what I would call a secondary source and it will be my last. Way to expensive to repair once problem starts your done. and the manufacturer a company called 3G in California did not screew enough people who bought them as Gateways after Gateway fell out of the business of DLP 3G hooked up with ShopNBC to sell the same item as a Gemstar God knows how many suckers they found and sadly for me I was one. PLEASE DO NOT EVEN THINK OF THIS AS A VIABLE ALTERNATIVE theyare just JUNK.

In a nutshell...let's just say we have a 56" paperweight in our living room. I originally LOVED it. Great picture quality. The TV was very good to us. Then the bulb went...$400 for a new bulb. Fine, whatever. THEN, hell broke loose. We noticed that the picture would sometimes flicker white in some spots. We knew it wasn't the bulb. So I called Gateway (another reason not to buy it...Gateway has HORRIBLE support. AND they are dumb as beets). The woman told me that it was the optical lense, and that part cost, gulp, $2,400!!! Now, when we bought this TV 3 years ago, we paid $3,000, why would I pay almost the same price for one part? I then asked her how much it would be to have someone come out a fix it. She said another $500. WHAT?!?! I told her I might as well buy a newer, BETTER TV that won't be so expensive to fix. That's when I spoke to customer service. This was the best part. He said these TVs aren't meant to last more than a year, and that they are meant for people who don't watch that much TV...for people how just like to have it sit and look pretty in their living room. Now, is that the DUMBEST thing you've ever heard? I told him that we love to have people over, to entertain. So we are not allowed to have that size TV? They sold me a $3,000 piece of equipment knowing it was going to break ina year? This shouldn't be happening after only 3 years. Please, don't buy from these people. They are rude, unhelpful, and full of it.

This TV has treated me well!.......2006-05-28

I bought the Gateway 56" rear-projection DLP over three years ago, mainly for viewing the new high-def programming and playing console video games on a BIG screen. I am searching the net now looking for deals on a replacement lamp and came across the TV on Amazon, but the original lamp lasted 3 years and nearly 10,000 hours, believe it or not. The picture has always been great, even in the sunny room I now have it in, and it views very well from most angles, so everyone gets a good seat. The A/V input options are unbelievable and there is a really cool little side panel for easy access. Even though my lamp finally gave out, the image never faded unlike many other high-def sets. The PIP options are great as well. The start-up time is a little slow but you get used to it pretty easily. I also wish that the set had a built in HD receiver, which I expected with the two tuners. My father bought one of these TVs after he saw mine and his has worked very well also. I should mention that we both got deals on these because it was a the time that Gateway was closing its retail stores. I suppose that it the largest negative for this product, the poor customer support of Gateway and their stopping continuance of this cool, economical TV. I think that DLP gives you the most bang for your buck in an HDTV.

I have had this Gateway for almost a year and a half and I can't rave enough about it! I have had no lamp errors...in fact, I've had no errors whatsoever! The features are brilliant, the myriad of hookups and the HD picture...holy COW! I can see faces in the crowd when I watch a boxing match. Football games are simply AMAZING! My boyfriend recently hooked the computer up to it to play one of his videogames and I can't get him off of it! We've hooked the XBox, GameCube and Playstation to it and it's the ultimate videogaming TV. The thing is just HUGE! Our friends always oohhh and ahhh at it when they first see it. Make your friends jealous and improve your TV watching and video gaming. Get this TV!

Works, but beware.......2003-10-19

PNY claims that no drivers are needed for this reader to work with Windows XP. I tried both XP Home and Professional and the only way I could get the reader to work was to use the drivers on the CD. The only reason I give this product three stars is due to the frustration of trying to figure out what was wrong and the fact that PNY's support site incorrectly states that drivers aren't necessary for XP.

On a side note, I can plug in and mount the reader as a SCSI drive (/dev/sda1) in Linux with no problems.

I Paid $1100 for this in 1999 for Millennium STILL TICKING/TAPING.......2006-08-06

Hi, I bought this camera to take it on a Millennium trip to Isreal, Egypt, Greece...and it did not disappoint. Amazing. I think I've replaced the battery only once. IT comes with a charger so make sure you get that too. Easy to use. Be careful when loading the tape so you down force it. Never had problems with it but it looks pretty delicate when you see the fancy mechanism. Great almost 3 inch playback. Great zoom. Now all I have to do is edit all of these tapes. Saw that it isn't the best for Apple's MOVIE program but I'm going to use directions on HOW THINGS WORK -- for editing Mini-DV -- wish me luck. Swivel makes it easy to shoot vertical or horizontal. Easy to give to a pal to use. Like that you can get 90 minutes on one tape. Be careful, I recently somehow taped over a vaulable tape so pull that little green tab on your digital video tapes so you can't re-record accidentally. SO MUCH FUN -- makes even an event you DON"T WANT TO GO TO -- ie some party or wedding or something a lot of fun. Because the results are so good and the SOUND IS AMAZING. REALLY AMAZING SOUND for mini-dv -- plus you can put it in a tote bag or a large purse if you're a lady. No need for big camera bag. The stabilization tech eliminates need for tripods etc and it seems to work just as well inside a room at night vs during the day.....worth every penny -- and if you can get one used--well-- do it today!! js.

Camera goes everywhere..........2002-12-20

small enough to take everywhere.....it's been all over the world and through some tough climates and still works great! Large LCD for viewing eliminates the need for a view finder, which most people don't use with todays DV camera. Functions easy to access. Takes 37mm filters. Suggest purchase of two batteries so you can cut back on down time when shooting. Liked it so much....getting one for my son in the military!! Looking for underwater case...if available.

Excellent choice for a digital movie camera. Takes stills from 1 to 16 frames per snap. Hook up to a TV to view movies or review thru the lcd screen, Never had any problems.

Quite a handy little camcorder.......2002-08-29

I have had the Viewcam for a year now, and feel that I can make an adequate review of it now. So here it is. Problems/Repairs: 0. Things that impressed me: Resolution quality over VHS/8mm, low-light capabilities, sound quality, overall size, and that cool swivel action. Things that did not impress me: Cost of DV tapes, Resolution quality compared with newer miniDV cams, still shot pics, battery life. Overall: This is a very handy little camera, and I have enjoyed using it. It had firewire, which is the only way to go if your editing on your PC - and the picture/sound quality is far superior than any other format (don't let the whole Digital8 thing fool you). The price on Amazon was a steal at the time, and I do not regret getting it at all.

Beware the Surprises.......2002-08-13

This camcorder brought us three unpleasant surprises:

1. It is not completely compatible with Apple Computer's iMovie. The first few seconds of video are lost and cannot be imported after every Stop/Start break in the camera footage. It also leaves lots of square artifacts at the beginning of an export to tape. Both very frustrating.

2. After two years of admittedly heavy use (hey, when else will he be a baby again?), the auto focus mechanism went quite mad. It simply wouldn't hold focus under any circumstances. This sort of thing happens, I suppose, but then for the big surprise...

3. There is, in all of the United States, exactly ONE place that Sharp allows to work on their digital camcorders. Our camera has now been there for six weeks and the best we can get from them is that "the part is on order."
On order? These guys are the only repair facility for the entire U.S. and they don't have parts stocked?!? This isn't a little garage outfit that would go broke stocking spare parts for every camcorder ever made; this is a monopoly that knew darned good and well that anything that went wrong with this camcorder model was going to come to them. They should have had a ready supply of parts.
Repeated calls to them got us nowhere. A call to Sharp Customer Assistance got us nowhere.
