Hewlett-Packard CD-Writer drives have consistently been stable workhorses, and the CD-Writer Plus 8250i is no exception. Out of the gate, this thoroughbred proves its worth by delivering on advertised speeds and producing readable CDs in every CD-ROM drive we tested--even those burned at full speed. In this age of 8x CD-R drives, it's comforting to know that 4x drives such as the 8250i are not cheap but simply inexpensive and built to handle the rigors of extended service.

We found the CD-Writer Plus 8250i to be an excellent addition to a faster CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive. While the 24x read speed is certainly adequate for most applications, its slow random-access speed of 156 milliseconds is readily apparent when compared to that of typical 40x to 50x CD-ROM drives with speeds of 80 to 90 milliseconds. As such, we put the 8250i through the paces by making it a slave of a DVD-ROM drive on the secondary IDE bus. This is the toughest location for any ATAPI burner to be because if burns are likely to fail, they'll fail from here. True to form, the 8250i performed admirably in all tests without producing a single badly burned CD (typically called "coasters").

If you're a beginner at installing devices like these, we recommend you get some help. The 8250i's documentation is poorly written and lacking in visuals. Otherwise, hardware installation is a breeze. Software comes on one CD-ROM and is easily installed via a single executable file.

The CD-Writer Plus is powered by Adaptec-based software; it uses Easy CD Creator 3.5 for creating music and data discs and DirectCD 2.5d for writing to rewritable CD-RW media. If you're new to the world of burning discs, don't worry--HP offers a simple menu-driven interface that ties all the components together quite nicely.

When you click on the Create a CD icon, you have four simple choices: make a music CD, copy an existing CD, make a data CD, or make a CD that is compatible with most other CD-ROM drives. We figured this last option would configure Easy CD Creator to burn discs at only 1x speed to ensure full compatibility with older drives. Instead, it acted like the make-a-data-CD feature.

We used CD Tach from TestaCD Labs to perform all the read benchmarks on the drive. All the sequential read speeds for both CD-ROM and CD-RW media were well within HP's advertised range. Burning discs at the full 4x speed took approximately 23 minutes from start to finish (including the two- to three-minute closing of the disc session), while duping a full CD-ROM took 18 minutes. The software also directly supports the copying of music CDs and the creation of music CDs from digital WAV files. Unfortunately, the included version of Adaptec Easy CD Creator (3.5c) doesn't support the burning of MP3 digital music directly to CD music. This problem only affects older CD-RW drives, however.

Once you format a disc, using Adaptec's DirectCD software, you can write the disc to use DirectCD's packet writing technology. This means you can drag and drop files from the desktop or the Explorer directly onto the drive as if it were a large floppy drive. After you remove the disc, you can read CD-RW media in any multiread-compatible CD-ROM and/or DVD-ROM drive.

Burning data directly to the 8250i using DirectCD takes around 54 minutes. But as there's a certain amount of overhead associated with packet writing, the total amount of data the HP SureWriter Plus can write to a single piece of CD-RW media is approximately 513 MB. (Read our FAQ for more info about packet writing and random erase.) After you burn data to CD-RW media, you can delete it, just as you would delete data off a hard drive to free up more space. Generally, writing small amounts of data, such as documents, is instantaneous, while larger 13 MB files take well over a minute. Deleting files is much faster though--an included CD-RW Erase utility destroys all formatting on a CD-RW disc.

We found the HP CD-Writer Plus 8250i to be an excellent drive and a great value in its price range. If you want a burner that gets the work done, without any bells and whistles, we recommend you give the HP 8250i a try--you won't be sorry.

Well what can i say! the installation was a breeeze, the running of the thing wasn't :( I could make music cd's without getting one coaster, but backing up other stuff was a nightmare. The software didnt install correctly and it turns out my windows 98 was duff! After installing win98 SE everything came to life and now im backing up everything without problems. Also the box says my drive is 4x4x24 2mb buffer but the markings on the unit say its a 4x4x32 4mb buffer and it was made last month? is this a new revision of this model?

This was first CD-RW drive, I had read favorable reviews of the 8200 and 9100 and figured the 8250i would be on par. The contents of package were slim to say the least. The "manual" was a couple of black and white sheets that loooked like a quick Xerox, there was no audio cable, no screws to mount the drive and one CD-R (no CD-RW was included.) Installation was easy and the drive was ready to go in minutes. I tried copying an Audio CD at 4x. The software reported the disc creation was successful. The result though was terrible, skips and jumps - totally useless. I tried another one at 2x and worked fine. I then tried copying a couple program disks, both ended up no good. Also, one time after inserting one of the copied data disks in the 8250i, the drives light blinked non-stop and the computer froze up. I've since discovered that the other HP drives in these 8000 and 9000 series are made by Sony, but the 8250i is made by Philips. I exchanged the 8250i for the 9110i which records at up to 8x. The packaging looked professional, there was included audio cable, screws, 2 sample disks, more software and a label maker. I just completed copying an audio CD at 4x and results were perfect.

Excellent writer for the price.......2000-03-23

i recently bought this HP writer and i am very pleased with it. It only took about 10 minutes to install, including rebooting, etc. My computer which is almost 2 years old had no problems with the new hardware. It takes some practice getting used to the software, as it would to get used to any writer, but I put it to the test and wrote a 74 minute sequence of music to a 74 minute cd-r using a mix of mp3 and cd music and the whole thing recorded perfectly, i have had no problems. It writes at a medium speed with excellent quality and very good for the price. The software cant convert mp3 to wav, but its easy to find a mp3 converter. Also, mine did not include an audio cable to hook up to my sound board like the instructions said it would, but that wasnt much of a problem because i already have my main cd rom hooked up to my sound board. But overall its a great writer for a great price, and ive been into computers for a long time now and have looked at cd writers for a long time and i reccomend this one.

Flash vs HDD.......2005-12-03

The previous reviewer suggests Flash is a better storage medium than HDD (hard disk drive), simply because the price of flash is dropping, and because he claims the Microdrive he bought went bad a year and a half after he bought it. He's offering some very poor advice... Since when is "cheaper" synonymous with "better," and who knows what actually caused his reported failure? Besides, I wouldn't take advice from someone who paid $850 for this 4GB microdrive...

At this point, the prices of all forms of storage media are dropping significantly, but price should not be the only factor in one's decision.

Flash memory is much less reliable than HDD. The life of flash memory *is* finite; your flash memory *will* fail at some point--that's an absolute given fact (see your owner's manuals, or Google it). If you use flash to store or back-up important files, you're asking for trouble. HDD, on the other hand, has the potential to last a lifetime, and in the unlikely event you have a HDD failure, the data written to the disk *can* be retrieved; the same can't be said of flash.

If you're looking for storage & back-up solutions, you can find a 300GB HDD for around $150. If you're looking for a quick & easy way to transfer/transport files, flash drives are perfect, although you're limited to about 1.5GB for your $150. Microdrives like this one have their benefits, too, such as double the storage capacity of any similarly-priced flash media.

Flash drives & flash-based devices (MP3 players, iPod Nano, etc.) are great, but everything you have on flash memory should be backed-up to HDD, because at some point..........

Failed after 1.5 years miserably with no recovery.......2005-06-15

I used it as an internal PC Card Backup HD for my laptop. Great concept, but... Lost 4GB of data after the drive failed after about 1.5 years of use. No, I did not throw it, it was not in a comera and blouncing around, it was mostly standing on my desk. All of a sudden the outlook file went (FAT destroyed) and it ended up scrapping around with all data being lost.

In general, I strongly advise against disk drive for any purpose as Flash Memory has bacome available. I paid around $850 for the HD and now CF Flash Memory is $300 for the same 4GB size.

Don't buy this or any other microdrive!!!

How many pictures will it store? It is the most commonly asked question from digital camera enthusiast but usually the question that is the most difficult to get a straight answer about. Well, considering I worked in the memory industry for over 7 years I can help clarify this perplexing question and do so unbiased as I have since changed industries.

The PNY E-Commerce 64MB SECURE DIGITAL CARD INTL, like most 64MB cards, will store on average 71 pictures when used with a 2 megapixel camera, 53 images when used with a 3 megapixel camera, 32 pictures when used with a 4 megapixel camera, 25 images when used with a 5 megapixel camera, and 20 pictures when used with a 6 megapixel camera. These numbers are based off the assumption that you are going to shoot your images at the highest quality JPEG setting available for the camera and understand that they are estimates and may be off by as much as 10 percent due to numerous factors including the complexity of the scene being shot and the compression algorithm used by your specific camera.

Stunning but ....................................2005-07-10

I have owned half a dozen wireless routers and access points. In my 3500 square foot 25 year old ranch home none gave 100% coverage. I had some such as a DLink that came close to 100% coverage but none that really kept a solid connection. Tried the ParkerVision and it is pretty stunning. No dead spots, no dropping of the signal, nice steady signal. The bad side is that they are exiting the consumer market. I am using it with a Dell Inspiron 9100 with a built in wireless 1450 card. Shame that the company did not continue on.

Revolutionary!.......2005-06-25

I do not know why this product is advertised more! This Router is the cure for wireless blues!! It is simply amazing, I am getting reception in my basement and in my neibors yard. (I live in a medium NYC suburb house). The best wireless product I have purchased. Whether it is B or G, it gets it at a constant, stable and reliable speed. I am going to purchase another and donate it to my school so I and my teachers can get wireless.

If there is a downside, The router is large..it is slightly larger than those typical desk alarm/radio clocks. It is rather light.

Durability is great (I believe I had it for at least 3 mounths) Iiit is durrable since Iam never fideling with the antenas like my other router therefore there is less ware and tare.

Might improve your home connection, but don't expect to roam.......2005-06-07

This router is advertised to have a 1 mile open field range when used with their LAN cards. I bought both items, the router and the usb lan card and decided to test it out. I work 2 blocks away from where I live so I thought it might reach that far at least (Maybe a quarter of a mile).

I configured the router rather easily and placed it next to the window that is in the corner closest to my workplace. I installed the USB lan adapter on my laptop and configured it rather easily as well. Next, I got in my car and placed the adapter below the windshield and put the laptop in the seat next to me to watch the range meter tell me how much signal I had.

Results:

In my car, directly outside the window where I could see the router, maybe 25 feet away, I received 90% signal. I started driving forward and watched the signal plummet. By the time I got 200 feet away, the signal was barely there. I didn't even make it to the first stop sign before I lost signal. I also tried the range from the opposite side of my appartment which puts about 3 walls between the router and the outside...The range was about 150 feet at the most.

While this router might be good for expanding coverage over your residence, do not expect it to give you anything near the 1 mile range unless you truly live in a rural area with line of sight between you and the router. It seems that the window and trees were enough to drop the range from 1 mile to 200-300 feet in my experience.

I returned the router and usb adapter to Compusa and am staying with my Linksys WRT54GS for now. We'll have to wait for MIMO, Wireless-N and WiMax before we can truly be wirelessly connected at broadband speeds.

A networking product that truly delivers expanded range!.......2005-05-30

In the last few weeks I have purchased and returned the Netgear PreN router/card and the DLink SuperG with MIMO router/card combos because they didn't eliminate the wireless dead spots inside my 2-story 3000 sq.ft. home. In fact, I got zero signal strength in many of the rooms on the first floor of my home with these products (the router is in a front corner bedroom upstairs). To be blunt, these products didn't increase my reception range at all.

However, with the ParkerVision SIGNALMAX WR1500 router in the upstairs bedroom and a WLAN1500 PC card adapter in my Compaq laptop, I get coverage EVERYWHERE inside my home AND my entire backyard AND up to one block from the from my home. I primarily wanted increased range at cable broadband internet speeds, and that is exactly what the SIGNALMAX products delivered. Using the local Houston RoadRunner broadband internet speed test utility, I get between 3300-3600 kbps download speed throughout the house and when sitting in the backyard patio. The other products mentioned got zero signal in many of these rooms. So, I am very happy. No, these transfer speeds are not as fast as can be had over short distances with 802.11g network products. And ParkerVision does not go out of its way to clearly inform buyers that this is a long-range 802.11b network solution. But, if you are looking for wireless network speed equivalent to fast broadband cable internet speeds throughout your home - then this is the product for you. I should also mention that I have 128-bit WEP security activated, which may slow things down a bit. But with this transmission range, you had better institute security protocols, unless, of course, you want to share your broadband bandwidth with your nearest neighbors.

One important note: the default router communication channel is Channel 6, which, apparently, is the same frequency used by 2.4 GHz cordless phones. This is dumb -- the default should be anything but Channel 6. This prevented me from being able to connect to the router from the laptop even though indicated signal strength was excellent. Fortunately, I made a quick phone call to a very helpful service tech (Rachel) at ParkerVision (at 9 a.m. on a Sunday morning with no waiting!), who instructed me to switch to Channel 1. As soon as I changed the channel setting on the router, the laptop connected and I was getting 85-100% signal strength throughout the house. In the farthest corner of backyard, signal strength drops off rapidly and I only manage 250 kbps download. (Remember, the router is in a front, upstairs bedroom.) However, I can walk a block from the front of my house, and get 2000 kbps so long as no other house comes between the laptop and my home.

So far, I can highly recommend this product. I cannot yet comment regarding the long-term reliability of this equipment.

works as advertised.......2005-03-11

my experiences pretty much mirror everyone elses. I had started with linksys and all the repeaters & booster antennaes seemed to be like late night ads for exercise machines - promise much and deliver little. This unit setup very easily - i was fine with b speed. I did buy a parkervision adapter card Which oddly enough seems to get worse reception than if i swap it with a linksys card - same pc same distance. go figure. worth it on price
