The LC3040N's image enhancements include DCDi video processing by Faroudja (the acclaimed DCDi algorithm detects low-angle lines and smoothes out staircases and jagged edges, bringing greater realism to sporting events and movies), a Cross Color Suppressor (which removes cross-color artifacts from composite-video sources for consistently true colors), Fine Detail Enhancement (which identifies a picture's areas of fine detail, such as skin and hair, and enhances them to a more lifelike appearance), and the above-mentioned HP Visual Fidelity technology (which analyzes every pixel of every image for noise reduction, color enhancement, motion compensation, and detail enhancement to ensure a spectacular picture). Motion-adaptive noise reduction enhances the quality of standard-definition and off-air programming.

FilmMode processing with 3:2 and 2:3 pulldown accurately reproduces film-originated content from video sources. Digital video mastering introduces a common distortion when adjusting 24-frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video; 3:2/2:3 pulldown digitally corrects this distortion, removing redundant information to display a film-frame-accurate picture.

Inputs include a DVI-D terminal with HDCP (High-Definition Content Protection), which permits pure digital connections to DTV set-top boxes and DVI-enabled DVD players and PCs. The set also offers 2 HD component-video inputs, a VGA computer input, an RF antenna/coaxial input, and 2 each composite- and S-video connections for additional component hookups. A composite-video-based audio/video output lets you feed a TV signal to a DVR, VCR, or other device--perfect for recording one program while watching another using the set's 2 tuners. A dedicated subwoofer output lets you use an outboard powered subwoofer to augment the TV's speakers with full low-frequency response.

A pair of selectable features enhances the set's 15-watt (7.5 watts per channel x 2) sound system. Component inputs don't work.......2005-01-31

The TV generates a lot of heat, and after about 10-15 minutes of use with component video inputs, the colors wash out. This happened with 2 different HD cable boxes and 2 different DVD players. The display is not a problem for composite video (yellow RCA) input, but if you are looking for HD, don't get this!

Nice Unit but Some Video-related Issues .......2004-12-06

I've had this unit for about a week. I also own a 50" Pioneer plasma which I can compare the performance to.

Pluses: Nice styling, fit and finish. It looks ultra-modern. Tons of connectivty from the back including DVI (sorry, no HDMI). Speakers mate securely, and complement the unit. They look like they belong there. Speakers sound fantastic for such small attachments. For big movies you'll still need to channel the sound thru your home theater - but the included speakers don't suck. Images are bright - but somewhat grainy compared to plasma. If you are about 4 screen heights away from the screen the picture quality is close to plasma - but I could see differences. Also no dead pixels on this unit so far as I can tell.

Minuses: Unit has trouble syncing to 480i component video. I tried a Sony and a Denon DVD player and it lost sync on anamorphic widescreen material (2.35:1). The problem was horrible on the Sony - but not as bad using the Denon player. I had to switch to 480p to get the HP LCD to settle down in component mode. The remote control is nothing special. It is not backlit and is somewhat hard to use. Could not program it to understand basic functions of my Denon DVD player - although it is supposed function with other brands of electronics. Also, sometimes you have to press the remote twice to get it to register on the unit. But the two biggest drawbacks are: Only 3 aspect modes: 4:3, Panoramic (more commonly known as Wide mode for stretching 4:3 material to fit 16x9 aspect), Normal (which is commonly known as Full mode and used to show anamorphically encoded DVDs). There's no "through" mode or native pixel mode - as far as I can tell - although I have not used the DVI connection yet - but I plan to soon. The biggest drawback is that this set is not a true 16x9 aspect ratio. It's 1280x768 native resolution, and the pixels are square. This means the set is 15x9. The scaler built into the unit has trouble properly scaling for this aspect ratio. For instance, when showing a DVD in component mode - it scales 4:3 material to the exact aspect ratio defined by the 720x480 pixels on the DVD - without taking into account that the pixels are not encoded gemetrically as squares on a DVD. This means that (in component mode only) that the resulting image is slightly stretched horizontally. This is not a problem in S-video or composite mode where it scales the NTSC image correctly to 1024x768 (a 4:3 aspect). But for component video - this same image is scaled to 1152x480 or 1.5:1 aspect ratio - which is not the true aspect ratio on the DVD, because the DVD pixels are not square. Which means in component - the horizontal axis of the LCD image is stretched by 12.5 percent. So instead of getting 1.333:1 aspect (the normal NTSC aspect ratio), you are getting a 1.5:1 aspect ratio. Not a good thing. For normal mode (e.g., Full Mode anamorphic)- the image looks correct (no stretching) so I can only assume that some of the left and right portions of the image are cropped in order to fit 16x9 material into a 15x9 aspect ratio. On my Pioneer unit - which is also a native 1280x768 display - the pixels are rectangular (slightly longer than tall) - so 16x9 material fits perfectly on this display. Here, 1280 means 1366 virtual pixels - so 16x9 material is scaled to a virtual 1366x768 and aspect is preserved. But because the HP LCD used square pixels - and the scaler blindly maps 720x480 to 1152x768 in component mode, the image is compromised. And you can tell. The HP scaler should scale 720x480 component to 1024x768 - but it doesn't.

So bottom line - this is a nice unit - but there are these issues for anyone who cares to know about them. As a new TV brand, HP has a few lessons to learn on doing HDTV (and regular TV for that matter) properly - so that aspect ratios for 4:3 material are properly rendered in component video. And HP needs to figure out why the set has trouble syncing to 480i component video. Also, this set runs quite a bit warmer that my 50 inch plasma. Obviously, the designers were not too concerned with how much power they burned to achieve a fairly good image. If you want to buy HP, you may want to wait for the next generation of LCD sets - and perhaps some of these issues will be resolved by then.

Outstanding Product for the Money.......2006-08-14

I bought this card for my wife as an anniversary present. She is an aspiring photographer and takes a lot of pictures. Let me tell you, this card was a godsend for her. Gone are the days where she runs out of space on her card when ever we go somewhere new. This beast holds over an amazing 1200 pictures, and for just over 100 bucks it was a steal. Buy this card, it will be the last one you will buy for a long time.

I just ran a complete analysis of all the flash cards in the Amazon catalog by downloading the information via a script, then parsing the product title to obtain the capacity information, then took the Amazon selling price and divided it by the number of megabytes in the card and this card was the least expensive 4GB card.

It's price per megabyte as of July 15,2006 was: 0.0264975 compared to an average price per megabyte for the entire catalog of .96 and an average price per megabyte of 4GB cards of .047.

Why does this card only have a sales rank of 7,074 and yet the SanDisk 4GB card has a sales rank of 135? I don't know. But I can tell you it isn't price. ;-)

Aspect ratio: The aspect ratio refers to the shape of the video image. Standard television has a 4:3 aspect ratio, which is almost square in appearance. Digital television will have either a 4:3 or 16:9 aspect ratio, which is widescreen and appears rectangular, looking more like a movie screen and filling more of the viewer's field of vision for a more lifelike viewing experience.

Scanning method: Frames of video are made up of many lines of video that are scanned onto a television screen so closely they appear to be a solid picture. The scanning method can be either interlaced or progressive. Interlaced scanning (also used in today's analog TV), indicated by an "i" in the video format, fills in the odd number lines (1,3,5,7...) and then fills in the even number lines (2,4,6,8...) until the frame is complete. Progressive scanning, "p," fills in each line consecutively until the frame is complete, like a computer display.

Excellent wide screen HDTV at reasonable price........2003-12-31

If you currently have a conventional TV set with the traditional 4:3 aspect ratio but watch a lot of DVDs, you're probably tired of black spaces above and below the picture wasting much of your TV's screen size whenever you watch the widescreen movies which have become the norm on DVD. The cure for this problem is to get a widescreen TV with a 16:9 aspect ratio. This Toshiba is an excellent 16:9 TV with a very sharp picture. Also important, this is an HDTV set which is ready to display the dramatically improved picture quality characteristic of the new High Definition Television broadcasts to which all networks are rapidly converting and which are now available from most cable and satellite providers. Although this Toshiba's 34" screen may not be as huge as some of the new thinscreen plasma TVs it is still quite large. Furthermore, it's picture quality is equal or superior to plasma TVs and its price is much lower. All things considered if you want a widescreen TV that's ready for HDTV and you don't want to break your budget to get one, this excellent Toshiba set may well be the answer.

Excellent picture; obsoleted by 34HF82.......2003-02-04

This is an excellent widescreen direct view CRT, with native 480p and 1080i modes. All 480i signals are upconverted to 480p, allowing you to see all the junk that interlacing hides. Therefore, some old 480i material might look worse on this TV. But you did not get this TV to play VHS tapes and watch CATV, did you? No, you got it for progressive scan material like high-end video games, DVDs, and HD (1080i) content.

This set has virtually peerless video quality, and numerous zoom modes for both anamorphic and "dumb" widescreen programming. The downside to this is that now every single flaw in DVD mastering or game graphics programming is visible to you. Ignorance really is (was) bliss. For example, in 480p, you can really tell that Gladiator had a much better DVD mastering process than The Matrix or Braveheart.

This set is completely obsoleted by Toshiba's 82 line of products, notably the 34HF82. The 34HF82 can do 720p, and has a DVI input, two things the 34HF81 set lacks. Therefore there is absolutely no reason to get this set today, but for those who still have it, it still looks incredible.

I have no comment on the sound, since I mute the TV and run audio through my stereo system only.

Caveat: I have a major screen artifact on strong red colors. They all appear very pixelated, especially on the borders. Under warranty, Toshiba will replace the digital video board.

More than I imagined !.......2002-07-24

I purchased this wonderful Toshiba after many months of research, including consumer reviews as published by National Consumer magazines. Price was a factor which ended up in my eliminating Sony which had previously been my number one choice. Review of repair records then proceeded to eliminate RCA and Zenith. My requirements were simple, a reasonably priced, good reliable 34" HDTV, in 16:9 format with flat screen, 3 S-video and 2 wideband component video inputs to facilitate my progressive scan DVD player, DSS system, cable etc. Hookup was relatively easy, (as I am not an electronics wizard), and with programming of the remote I now have control of all systems thru one device. Dss picture is fantastic, analog is not as definitive but than that is analog, not high definition. DVD qualty is excellent with monster cable connection. This TV is a definite buy, I am very pleased with the performance and the purchase price. ...

Great picture and price...some improvements needed........2002-07-24

After deciding that a projection TV would completely dominate our living room, it came down to this unit and comparably sized Sony. While the Sony had a better picture overall, the Toshiba won out due to price and performance.

Pros: Two component inputs plus three additional video in. The ability to use the TV's internal speakers as the center channel. (BTW, the sound is really incredible for a television with such tiny speakers.) 4 different wide-screen modes to accomodate just about any source. SteadySound eliminates those loud commercials. Picture quality is just incredible, especially if you put it next to your old set with a progressive-scan DVD. Cool favorite channel scan that shows 9 channel matrix next to main channel. Not just PIP but side-by-side pictures. Dual audio allows main picture to play on TV's speakers and PIP picture to play on outside source. (Combined with headphones and you can imagine the possibilities.) Universal remote works well with many components for most basic functions.

Cons: Not even a month old and I get the occasional wierd picture--flesh tones are vivid blue. Good thing it has a good warranty. While the front of the screen is flat, the inside has a slight curve in the corners. PIP doesn't work with component sources. Channel labels are only 4 characters long, limited to about 20 channels and don't automatically assign themselves. This unit is huge and heavy (163 lbs) which limits what you can put it in/on.

Overall a good value for such a excellent picture. To get something better would cost nearly a thousand dollars more.
