Manufacturer
The Basics Every so often, the bar is raised. And so it is with HP's new Media Center m1090n Photosmart PC, an astonishing desktop computer that's adorned with high-end components from top to bottom and will make quick work of any task or application you can dream up. Featuring such lavish perks as a humungous 250 GB hard drive, superb out-of-the-box 3D graphic support, a potent Altec Lansing amplified speaker system and a powerful new version of Intel's Pentium 4 processor, the m1090n stands proudly at the forefront of HP's new Media Center roster as one of the most capable standard desktops on the market. It isn't cheap, but it is ideal for discerning individuals who simply must have the best.
Processor
At the heart of any computer lies the CPU (or processor), a massive collection of miniature transistors that governs the speed and power of the entire unit. For the Media Center m1090n, HP has turned to Intel and its new Pentium 4 560 CPU. This is an upgraded version (nicknamed "Prescott") of the venerable Pentium 4 chip, featuring one full MB of Level 2 cache and a more generous data "pipeline" than prior models. Operating at a screaming 3.6 GHz and of course sporting Intel's Hyper-Threading technology (Hyper-Threading allows a single CPU system to behave at times as a dual CPU system, thus adding substantially more speed to some high-end applications), this is an extremely competent CPU that will blaze through virtually anything. However, it follows the tried and true 32-bit CPU architecture of previous Pentiums rather than the substantially faster 64-bit architecture just being introduced in today's priciest, most advanced CPUs. Therefore, it isn't quite the most powerful CPU money can buy.
Memory
Computers typically store information on their hard drive, but they keep frequently and recently accessed data in Random Access Memory (RAM) for faster retrieval. More RAM means more efficient computing, superior multitasking and less strain on your hard drive. The Media Center m1090n features one full GB of fast PC3200 DDR SDRAM main memory, a huge allotment that's more than enough for even the most challenging multitasking situations. Moreover, the system is constructed to support later RAM upgrades to a stunning total of 4 GB.
Video
CPU's are usually so busy doing basic calculations that they need help translating visual output to the viewing screen. This is the duty of the graphics card (or graphics controller). The Media Center m1090n features one of today's finest graphics cards, an ATI Radeon X600 PRO PCI-E with 256 dedicated MB or video memory. This card is capable of accurately displaying virtually any 2D application and delivering smooth frame rates and immersive, lifelike visuals to the 3D animations found in industry leading computer games and 3D animation packages.
Display:
HP has not included a display screen, thus allowing you to continue using your current monitor or select from today's many alternatives.
Sound
The Media Center m1090n produces sound via an Intel High Definition Audio chipset with support for seven distinct audio channels and one subwoofer. If eight separate speakers seems like a bit much, you can certainly make do with the enclosed Altec Lansing 2121 speaker system. This is a two-satellite, one-subwoofer setup that's far more powerful and much more accurate than the typical entry-level multimedia speakers accompanying many of today's computer systems.
Hard Drive
At 250 GB, the internal hard drive is one of the most spacious in any desktop PC, offering enough room for a massive allotment of files and applications and ample music, video/photo and multimedia libraries too. Further storage possibilities are offered in the form of the convenient HP Personal Media Drive, a docking slot located on the front of the computer tower that accepts portable hard drives.
Optical Drive
An optical drive is essential in today's computing environment. A "CD-ROM" drive allows you to install CD-based applications and play music CDs. A "CD-RW" drive adds CD "burning", so you can also backup your important files to long-lasting discs and create personalized music CDs. With a DVD-ROM drive you can enjoy all of the above plus watch the same big budget DVD movies you watch on your home entertainment system. And with a DVD-RW drive, you can also "write" home movies to durable discs and archive files to DVD (DVDs boast more than seven times the storage capacity of a CD).
This system features two optical drives -- a DVD-ROM drive for playing music and data CDs and DVD movies, and a state-of-the-art Double Layer DVD+R/RW drive through which you can burn music and data CDs, play DVD movies, and record home videos to long-lasting DVD media. The "Double Layer" designation refers to the unit's ability to handle double layer DVDs, each of which offers nearly double the capacity of a traditional DVD (8.5 GB vs. 4.4 GB). Moreover, the unit's two drives allow you to make extremely quick copies of any CD or DVD.
Connectivity and Expansion
With no less than six high-speed USB 2.0 ports -- two of which are conveniently located on the front of the unit -- you'll have plenty of room for plug and play gadgets such as digital cameras and printers. HP has also included two IEEE 1394 "FireWire" ports (commonly used for fast data transfer from digital camcorders) and a versatile 9-in-1 card reader for reading memory cards from devices such as digital cameras, PDAs and more. Communication options include an integrated 10/100Base-T networking interface for fast Internet and network communication and a V.92 data/fax modem for low-speed dial-up connections.
Operating System and Software
The Media Center m1090n features an extremely comprehensive software package headed by Microsoft's beefy Windows XP Media Center Edition operating system. HP will also pre-install the Microsoft Money Standard 2004, Microsoft's Works 7.0 productivity suite, HP Image Zone Plus photo and imaging software, and an impressive assortment of multimedia utilities. Last but certainly not least is HP's own Personal Video Recorder for recording and archiving up to 200 hours of video from sources such as cable and satellite TV.
Control
To help free your workspace of cumbersome cables, HP will provide a convenient wireless keyboard and wireless mouse combo. To help you relax when you're watching movies, playing games or listening to music, the system also features a handy wireless infrared remote control.

Simply Awesome........2005-07-05
I just upgraded to this PC after my old PIII outlived its usefullness. I do plenty of high-end gaming and video & graphics editing and have yet to bog this thing down.
About the only negative thing I have to say is probably a by-product of the fact that I'm used to running custom-built PC's. I'm a bit surprised by all the trial software installed and nag-popups I get all the time. It's like booting up a bunch of commercials. In the grand scheme though, pretty minor.
Overall, this thing is a racing car.

Snap.......2005-12-13
I bought this camera about three years ago, it was the CHEAPEST camera the Photography shop had that would work for me, and so yes it has some cheapness to it. But's it's still going strong, took it to mesa falls and other less frendly places with no problems, from the camera. My only con is the lens isn't much, I bought a 1a filter on it, but it doesn't zoom the vast distances I wish it would, it has some pretty fas shutter speeds and is amazingly simple to use, has the little sensor on top for flashes, or if like me you use an older flash and it doesn't meet the sensor you can plug it in on the side. Like it says, great beginners camera, or a less professional one, gives many more options and effects that normal point and shoot cameras, is just as easy to use as point and shoot, but none of the complicated features, a nice base too, like I said the lens isn't much, but it's not to cheap of a camera you wont want to spend the money on a better lens later on. Awesome camera to take on trips and vacations. I'm not sure how durable it is, I've taken it to a lot of places in not the nicest traveling conditions, dropped it a couple times, and it's still like it came in the box, didn't even scratch it. Has a nice gloss, with matte finish, nice weight.

Getting to know you.......2007-01-10
I've had many phones in the past both at home and at work but these have proven to be superior. I knew these phones were a great product since they were purchased for work and upon using them for a lengthly amount of time I knew I wanted to purchase them for my home use. I've had them now for about a year and haven't been disappointed. They have good clarity and wonderful features. I would definitely recommend them and purchase them again if I need be.

Customer Reviews:
Beware - Internet Radio a "hoax".......2006-07-01
Onkyo ceased providing Internet Radio through their Net-Tune products some time ago, but still advertise that it works (which it does not). MP3 content through network is working great, but no internet radio.
Good small receiver, but beware significant defects.......2004-11-15
The Onkyo NC-500 network receiver is suitable for a small bookshelf system in a den, bedroom or office. It is capable of receiving over-the-air AM and FM broadcast stations and provides a single auxiliary input for a CD player or other device. The receiver can stream audio files stored on your PC (using its downloadable Net-Tune software), and receive internet radio stations by way of its built-in Ethernet capability, and you can listen to internet radio without turning on your PC. While Onkyo recommends using this receiver over a wired network, I have had no problem with streaming audio and internet radio to it over an 802.11g wireless network.
Unfortunately, the receiver suffers from two problems which significantly impair its usefulness. First, it is only capable, at present, of receiving internet radio by way of Onkyo's server, which offers only a little over 500 stations to choose from.
Even if you know the URL of a favorite internet radio stream, you're basically out of luck. If this capability is something that's important to you, I'd recommend checking out the Philips Streamium devices instead. Philips offers a facility called "My Streams" which enables you to enter the URL's of stations you want to receive on their website and these will then be accessible to you through the Streamium device.
The second problem concerns the Net-Tune software which resides on your PC and streams audio files from it to the NC-500. After installing the software, you run it to create a database of the music files on your computer which can then be accessed from the NC-500. Tracks can be viewed on the NC-500's display screen by genre, artist, or album, based on the track tags in your MP3 files.
The main problem I have encountered in using this software is that files are entered into the database in something other than normal sort order. When I rip CD's onto my PC, I name the tracks from each album using the convention 01_track1, 02_track2, etc. in order to preserve the same order of play as on the CD. In spite of this, many tracks appear in the Net-Tune database out of order. For example, for my copy of Bach's Goldberg Variations, the tracks appear in the database in the order 1, 2, 3, 6, 5, 7, 4, 8, 9, 10...32 and, in case you're wondering, each track has the same number in its track tag as the number which begins its filename. I can't really explain why this is happening, but I definitely prefer to listen to this piece in the order that J.S. intended!
Once tracks are entered into the database, there appears to be no way to change their order. Tracks cannot be dragged from one position to another in the database list. Tracks can be deleted from the database and added to the end, but not inserted into the middle of it.
The only solution I have found for this problem is to create a playlist for each album in which I manually place the tracks in the correct order. There is no way I want to do this for a couple of thousand tracks, and you probably won't either. On the other hand, if you intend to use this receiver mainly to listen to one-track-per-song music and play order is not so important to you, then this might not bother you.
The playlist creation facility suffers from a clunky interface where you cannot select blocks of tracks to add to a playlist (by using shift-mouse click to highlight a number of contiguous tracks), but rather you must add them one at a time.
All in all, this is a good sounding, small receiver, but it suffers greatly because of problems which could be fixed relatively easily though Onkyo seems fairly unresponsive to these issues so far.

The flash comes complete with a bracket. This unit is compatible with all digital cameras with either built-in flash capability or not. It has a hot shoe so that it can be fired from the camera too. It is fully synchronized with fill-in flash and red-eye reduction flash and can be used with virtually all of the digital cameras on the market. It works as a slave. It can be set for a single flash camera or a pre-flash camera, or, it can detect which setting is best. Off-camera flash" refers to setups where the flash is not directly attached to the camera's hot-shoe. The benefits of such a setup is that the lens-flash distance can be greater, and thus more natural look can be achieved, the probability of "red eyes" is reduced, and more than one flash units can be used. In this document I will briefly cover three of the most common methods for operating flash units off-camera. Ordinary flash units will not work because your digital camera lacks a way to connect and/or mount an external flash. Even more importantly, most digital cameras emit a pre- flash and/or a red-eye pulse that fire before the shutter opens, then an additional flash pulse is fired to actually light your picture. This pre-flash and/or red-eye pulse confuses other flash and slave units, causing them to go off at the wrong time, and are useless for your digital camera. The Slave Flash has special digital pulse counting slave circuitry that is not fooled by the pre-flash and eliminates the need for an electrical connection to your camera.

Uber-calculator.......2007-06-09
I found this calculator an extremly good deal for its price. It has all functions one would want to have, the keys are easily accesible, i can type with the hand iam holding it in, the solar cell is very useful and saves batteries (which for this model are very cheap). There is not a single con i could find against this one.
This Sharp is SHARP.......2007-06-08
I had a calculator like this in college and worked great. I though an upgrade was needed. It's an easy scientific calculator to use and has a solar panel on it! It's feature that comes in handy! Excellent value too. Thanks again!!
Great calculator for the price.......2007-06-07
This is a great calculator, it takes a little time to read the manual and learn all the features, this one just about does it all. I paid less than $15 for mine on amazon and with the shipping it was a real value. If you are looking for a calculator for a student, and if they are going to have need of more complicated features, this is the calculator to get.
I give it five stars.
Sharp calculators are excellent!.......2007-05-06
I'll be honest. I can't really review this specific calculator because I bought 5 of them as a donation to a Native American reservation. They needed them for their school. But I know that Sharp calculators are always reliable. I own several.
This calculator is a small miracle.......2007-04-07
Look at that price up there.
This calculator is a sophisticated number-crunching gizmo that will handle 99% of standard calculator use. Need a feature that's not available? Good news, this fella's programmable. It powers itself with freely available light, but yet has a battery for when lighting conditions are paltry. Its interface is lovely and thoughtfully conceived, it weighs less than your checkbook, and it's surprisingly durable: throw it around, let your Aunt Marge step on it, rub it with beef and give it to the dog for a while ... at the end it'll still work.
All of that, and it costs less than a pizza.
Back in 1972, Hewlett Packard released their HP-35 calculator (with the four standard arithmetic functions and twelve transcendental functions), and it cost $395. Don't forget inflation, because that translates to roughly $2100 in 2007. That calculator changed the world, and now here's a calculator that leaves the HP-35 in the dust -- in terms of speed and functionality -- and at less than 1/100th the cost.
Sure, there are lots of feature-rich calculators that you can buy in the check-out line at Walgreen's for only a few bucks, so you're probably wondering what makes this calculator so special. If you consider (a) its price, (b) its feature set, and (c) its overall utility, this calculator is currently at the apex, folks. By a *long* way. And its been there for several years. Speaking as a calculator snob, I'm usually unimpressed by anything less than a classic HP, but as far as the complete package goes, this calculator is surprisingly beautiful. I own two of them; one to keep in my bookbag, and another one "just in case".
With this guy, you're getting a lot of bang for very few bucks. It might not graph, it might not perform symbolic math, it might not use RPN or have a precision-engineered keypad with double-injection-molded keys -- and above all it's certainly not a computer -- but it's currently the best value out there in utility scientific calculators and nothing else comes close.

So close and yet so far!!!.......2007-02-10
By the way, as of this writing, the picture on Amazon for the dual-powered version of this calculator is NOT the correct picture.
Sure, this calculator does lots of really neat stuff. It would be impossible to give a rating based on the features. either it does what YOU need it to do, or it doesn't, like any other tool.
However, I can rate subjectively, and this thing is subjecting my head to a ROYAL headache!! The LCD viewing angle has been designed so that you only get good contrast when viewing it at a very weird angle - exactly the WRONG angle if you are in a room with overhead lighting or brightly colored walls. In order to get good contrast you must be looking at the LCD screen at such an angle as to make the LCD screen and the curvy faceplate reflect overhead lights, the ceiling, the walls, etc. If you attempt to view the LCD screen head-on in an attempt to reduce these inevitable reflected light sources, and so that the characters on the screen are not stretched due to exaggerated perspective, or so that the buttons actually face your torso so they can be easily pushed (god forbid) the characters appears extremely (!!) dim. That is, the "contrast" is set all wrong, and I haven't found any way to fix it (a technology that was mature for hand-helds in the 1980s).
Now, if there is a way to fix the LCD contrast and I'm just ignorant about it, I'll gladly take the egg on the face to fix it and get rid of my headache. But I doubt it.
Then there's the hard cover. Like so many other calculators these days, it comes with a nasty hard plastic cover that increases the thickness by 30%, and also increases the width a bit. And of course to go without the hard cover leaves you with nothing at all for protection. The soft cover some other calculators come with is thinner, lighter, and takes less PLASTIC to construct. But as we see all too often in thousands of OTHER made-in-China products, the more plastic you can get the consumer to buy and carry around, the "better"...or something.
So, just like most calculators, the hard plastic cover 'works' but sucks and should be a separately purchasable option. And this perverted LCD viewing angle is almost prohibitively uncomfortable and the inability to adjust is beyond asinine.
These are SUCH EASY THINGS TO FIX - it's ridiculous that Sharp would put so much excellent functionality into such a miss-the-mark package. Where's QA on this?!?
Made in China.

I typically use a TI-89, and this calculator is awesome. Too bad it is not allowed in the FE Exam. If you need a solid calculator, this one is it. The craftsmanship is great, the calculator can do Binary, Hex, Dec, and Oct, as well as statistics; Calculus and all you can think of. The only thing that I wish it did was "pretty print" BUY NOW.
