Takes a licking keeps on ticking.......2007-08-16
I bought the DV1000 in 2004, and it works better now than it ever has. We learned right off the bat that heat is this computer's worst problem, and it must never be operated on a surface that blocks the ventilation ports. Warranty covered the motherboard replacement due to overheating. I also learned that if you spill beer all over the keyboard, you should never hold it upside down and shake the beer back out while it's still on. Warranty covered the motherboard and battery replacement. My daughter thought a hard shutdown with the power button was the only way to turn it off every time. Warranty covered this too when she killed the hard drive. The warranty has long since expired, and we are much nicer to the computer now, so there have been no other problems. I upgraded the hard drive to 80 GB in less than 4 minutes, and upped the RAM to 1GB in less than 1 minute. This machine works fast and nearly flawlessly now.
I wish the sound was a little better and louder, and I find the screen glare to be a problem in bright situations. Additionally, the graphics card can't handle Google Earth and other graphics-intensive programs.
I like the quick Play feature and back lit buttons up top as well as the ability to disable the touch pad easily. The are several USB ports as well as the multi-card reader which come in handy. I have had a good experience with HP's customer service as long as I chat online with them. It's difficult to understand the outsourced service reps who speak with heavy accents.
I plan to replace the DV1000 with an HP DV9500t, but I'm worried that it make take quite a while before it needs replacing. Would I have bought the DV1000 knowing what I know now? Yes is the answer because the Centrino technology is awesome, and it's a good computer that was a real value for the money.
Performance ok, fan sucks.......2007-04-11
I use this laptop for work. The durability leaves much to be desired, but the performance and price were key selling points. The most chronic and annoying problem to date is the cooling fan. The blades are unbalanced, the fan gets "unseated" after a while, and gets stuck -- causing my laptop to overheat. I tried to order a replacement (after the warranty period), but HP says they don't manufacture them. I resorted to taking the whole thing apart every 1.5 months to re-seat the fan so that it doesn't catch on the housing. What a pain! I'll never buy HP again.
Update: I just had to take apart the laptop last night to fix the fan again.
Good enough for an year of usage.......2007-03-16
Bought this laptop in Jan 2005 and didnt have much problem with the laptop except for a synaptics - touchpad problem which I had got fixed thru the warranty.
Since then, I have been using this laptop for almost everything possible. Playing hardcore games, running intensive simulations, downloading large torrent files at 500 Mbps, lots of video processing, etc.. and it definitely had taken a toll on the performance. 1st year, performance 90%, second year 60%, 3 year 40%..
Anyway, the main problem that is so critical is the USB port. After an year one USB port stopped functioning.. another after 17 months and the third after 2 years! Now, I dont have any USB port working!! This SUCKS!! Planning to get a PCMIA - USB adapter.
Overall, its a laptop good enough to use for not more than a year.
Poor customer service: beware.......2007-01-03
Based on our experience with HP desktops and now this portable, we've stopped buying HP equipment. Their customer service is so poor that we no longer consider them a reliable business partner. Nice machine, but if you ever need help with it, particularly if you are in a bind, on the road, or have an important business issue, we found them hopeless and unhelpful.
We are much happier with the small, ruggedized Panasonics.

HP has the WORST customer service of any company of any kind that I have ever dealt with. I have never called without having spent at least one hour on the phone with them before the various extensions in India, none of whom are helpful. And once the service is complete the computer is usually returned with more problems than they were origionally sent with. I would never buy another HP again.

Complete Waste of Your Time and Money.......2006-03-10
Seeing as this printer just had to be sent in for its 2nd warranty repair in less than a year of owning it I would have to seriously warn anyone to stay away from this product. It is unreliable in every sense of the word and I sincerely regret ever purchasing it.
On top of the fact that this printer has never consistently performed the jobs it claims to be able to do, the customer service at Primera is even WORSE than the printer itself which is really saying something.
Stay away from this thing at all cost!!!!!!

I am pretty sure that Amazon sent me a refurb version of this product, even though I bought a new one. None of the peripherals were in the box (cables, trays, manuals, etc) and it didn't work. Primera support was great, however, and they immeadiately replaced it. The replacement works wonderfully.

But the build quality does not meet my expectations.
Firstly, I do like the style; objects with corners tend to be easier to manipulate when you're not looking at it. I am far less concerned about style than build quality, however.
It feels lighter than you would expect of a box-like design as well.
The silver part of the casing is some kind of metal because it conducts heat/cold more than plastic (metal > plastic).
It behaves as a pure data flash drive as well as MP3 player; in fact, I didn't bother to install any software and on my WinXP computer could just drag and drop and use the player immediately.
It does not have a case or a holder that prevents it from flapping around if you prefer to run with it; the combined necklace-earbuds with magnets are brilliant, but the length is not adjustable at all. You could switch to your own headphones and just drop it into a pocket, though.
Being able to charge from the same USB transfer cable is convenient and not wasteful--as long as you have regular access to a computer.
Under those conditions, I would still be satisfied with it, but the first MP100 I got from Amazon was defective in that the joystick button would not register to the right side (there should be a tactile 'click'). I have my second MP100 right now from Amazon, but the joystick button only half-registers to the top. While there is still a 'click' when I raise the volume, I have to gently push the button back downward to center it again. I'm worried that eventually the joystick will cease to function to the top side now.
If you get an MP100 with a perfectly working joystick button, it could be fine for a while. Perhaps I'm unlucky, but it does seem the main button is the MP100's primary point of weakness.
Wow, this thing is tiny!.......2005-06-23
I needed a small lightweight MP3 player while I exercise and run. The "hard drive" MP3s really are not for jogging and bouncing around so I settled for a "flash" drive with at least 512MB. You will be amazed at the size. It truly is tiny. And it has a display! I am not even aware of it when I run. For my use, the sound is fine. It isn't my main home entertainment unit after all. No "playlists" or other "search by" features, but with only 512MB it isn't a concern for me. It can pause, fast forward, skip to the next song, etc. My only complaint thus far is the combo neck strap/earbud arrangement. But this might only be me since I am using it for running. I've swapped to different earbuds that are more suited for my activity. If you are looking for the smallest and lightest MP3 around with a display for whatever reason, check this out.
