Product Description
Looking for desktop-caliber performance in a mobile PC? The sleek Pavilion dv8110us sports an extra hard drive to give you a storage boost, plus check out its spacious, easy-on-the-eyes widescreen.
Amazon.com Product Description
Balance your need for productivity with great multimedia performance with the HP Pavilion dv8110us notebook PC, which features an amazingly bright, widescreen 17-inch BrightView display--perfect for multitasking between document windows and watching movies in their native aspect ratio. Enjoy movies or music in seconds with the external DVD or music buttons to launch HP QuickPlay (which bypasses the boot process). Control playback settings from up to 10 feet away with the optional HP remote, then store it conveniently in the PC card slot. And you'll stay productive with the 1.8 GHz AMD Turion 64 ML-32 processor. This notebook also features an 80 GB hard drive, 512 MB of installed RAM (2 GB max), built-in 54g wireless connectivity, dual layer DVD+/-RW drive (which also burns CDs), an ATI Radeon XPress 200M video/graphics card with 128 MB of dedicated video RAM.
The Basics
- Hard Drive: The 80 GB hard drive (at a fast 5400 RPM) is becoming average in size for notebook PCs, and it's roomy enough to store business productivity applications, all your important documents and presentations, and a good-sized digital audio and video library.
- Processor: Combining strong performance with efficient usage of power, the 1.8 GHz AMD Turion 64 ML-32 is uniquely optimized to power today's thinnest notebooks. It's also built for tomorrow's 64-bit applications, which will require a processor with significant power. It includes such AMD technology features as HyperTransport (which increases the communication between integrated circuits), PowerNow! (which enables longer battery life and reduced heat generation), and Enhanced Virus Protection (which works with Windows XP Service Pack 2 to better withstand attacks from certain classes of viruses). It also features a 512 KB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance.)
- Memory: The 512 MB of installed RAM (PC2700, 333 MHz, 2 x 256 MB) is a good start for running office productivity and audio software, but you'll want to take advantage of the ultra-roomy 2 GB of total RAM capacity (2 x 1 GB) for such multimedia needs as video editing and immersive 3D gaming.
- CD/DVD Drive: Offering the latest in DVD writing technology, the dv8110's multiformat DVD/CD drive is compatible with both DVD+ and DVD- disc formats as well as dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can store up to 8.5 GB of data. It features 4x DVD-R DL Write Once, 2.4x DVD+R DL Write Once, 16x DVD+R, 4x DVD+RW, 8x DVD-R, 4x DVD-RW, 16x DVD-ROM, 40x CD-R, 24x CD-RW, and 40x CD-ROM speeds. It also comes with a second DVD-ROM optical drive, with 16x read speed. It also comes with an extra DVD-ROM drive for disc playback only.
- Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a 101-key keyboard and a touchpad with on/off button and dedicated vertical/horizontal Scroll Up/Down pad. It also includes two quick-launch buttons (HP QuickPlay Music and DVD).
Screen, Graphics and Sound
The 17-inch WXGA+ high-definition BrightView widescreen (1440 x 900 resolution) provides a 45 percent larger picture for DVD movies than a 15-inch screen. Video is powered by the ATI Radeon XPress 200M IGP video/graphics card, which delivers good, though not high-end, 3D graphics. It delivers 128 MB of dedicated video RAM (separate with the system memory). ATI's HyperMemory technology allows the chipset to run in either Unified Memory Architecture (UMA) mode or with dedicated frame buffer memory to enhance graphics performance. It also features an integrated audio card with microphone and headphone jacks.
Connectivity and Expansion Slots
The dv8110us has an integrated 54g wireless LAN that's fully compatible with 802.11b/g wireless networks, as well as 802.11a connections. You get a very good offering of connectivity options, which does include super-fast USB 2.0 and FireWire:
- 4 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
- 1 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) port for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals
- 1 VGA monitor port
- 1 S-Video port for connecting to a TV
- 1 PCMCIA (or PC Card) slot (Type I/II, 32-bit)
- 1 ExpressCard/54 Slot (also supports ExpressCard/34)
- 1 headphone jack
- 1 microphone jack
- 1 Expansion Port 2 connector
- 1 IR receiver
It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.90) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems).
Preloaded System and Software
This system comes with the Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 operating system with Advanced Security Technologies, which helps to reduce unwanted downloads and pop-ups while surfing the Web. It also comes preloaded with Microsoft Works 8.0 (for working with word processing and spreadsheet documents), HP Image Zone Plus, Symantec Norton Internet Security 2005 AntiSpyware Edition (with 60 days of LiveUpdate), Encarta Encyclopedia 2005, Quicken New User Edition 2005, Microsoft Money 2005, Sonic DigitalMedia Plus, Sonic MyDVD Plus, WinDVD 5 Player Basic, Google Toolbar, and PC Doctor.
The included HP Image Zone Plus photo and imaging software makes it easy to organize, edit, share, print, protect, and store your photos and video clips. Organize and find your photos easily by timeline, keywords, and/or location using the unique photo-globe mapping tool. Remove red eye and fix other common problems. Share your photos quickly via e-mails that include thumbnails with links to the full-sized images--without downloading time-consuming attachments.
Dimensions and Weight
This notebook measures 15.62 x 11.1 x 1.82 inches and weighs 8.1 pounds.
Power
It's powered by a 8-cell rechargeable lithium-ion battery, which has a battery life of up to 3 hours (depending on usage). You'll get up to 6 hours of battery life with the optional 12-cell lithium-ion battery.
What's in the Box

Software is also covered for 90 days from date of purchase.

Excellent Machine.......2007-04-03
This is a great laptop especially for the price. The screen quality is great and even better when you put in over a Gig of memory. The speed is good and it can handle all the software I have thrown at it. It could use a bigger hard drive but just found out that it can take a second hard drive.
Great notebook, HP....uhhhh.......2007-01-31
I've had this notebook for a year now and we haven't had a spec of trouble with it, I'd say it had to be the best computer we've ever owned up until a couple of weeks ago. It was running perfectly, as usual, when I logged off, my husband logged onto his page and the computer just went down. I realize it can happen, I won't bash the computer. I'd give it 5 stars, but I've lowered it to 4 due to what happens next...I called tech support and they were quite helpful, but, it turned out to be a failure to reload problem...no problem, all was great, in the beginning. They sent my a box overnight to ship it to them for service, free and they said it would be serviced and returned in 3-5 days, cool. Well, over a week later, I'm STILL tracking the progress via internet. Well, today I notice where there's a message saying that they've been trying to contact me and I needed to contact them...WHAT? I've received NO phone call, NO email from them. I call and they say that there's been "brown liquid spillage" and it's ruined the computer. I have to pay $738 for them to service it! Spillage??? We're adults here, where'd the "spillage" come from? Nobody drinks coffee here, ever. IF there was in fact spillage at one time, wouldn't it have occurred sooner? Regardless, they have to replace the motherboard, keyboard, and a couple of other things. They tell me that it's set up on a 72 hour burner (mind you, I'm supposed to get my unit fixed and returned in 3-5 days) and it diagnoses the problem exactly, even spillage. Personally, I feel I've been taken. I've got no other choice though, I'm at their mercy, I wouldn't know where else to take it. I do get $100 knocked off the price though, then, and only then, am I offered accidental extended warranty. Why didn't I know about this before??? I don't know, I didn't know such an animal existed, now they offer it to me. Well, I bought it for $238 for 2 years. I could have bought a brand new computer with what I spent on this one today. Maybe I'm wrong, maybe it's all legit. Anyhow, I'm taking the rating down to 4 stars only because of the service people. Again, maybe I'm all wrong about all this. I haven't seen any spillage, no keys were sticky, no computer problems at all until that day and I guarantee, there was nothing spilled on it.
Junk.......2006-11-16
HP lures you in with seemingly high performance for a low price. I was excited when I first bought this computer for what seemed to be a low price. However, within months the motherboard blew.
This is not the end of the story. I later bought another HP notebook Pavilion 5139 and the first one had a broken CD rom. I returned it to circiut city for a new one, then within months the hard drive blew. They MADE me pay $14 for recovery disks (that did not come with the computer). Those disks did not work and I was forced to send the computer in.
Bottom line, these HP's are at extremely high probability of failure. The old saying of getting what you pay for applies. These things break down. Keep in mind I have another HP Laptop that also broke and an HP desktop with problems. I am a software company owner and have about 12 personal computers. I can tell you that I will never buy another low end HP. They are junk!
Rock Solid.......2006-10-24
I have owned my dv8110us for nearly a year now. It is a very stable and rock solid machine.
Granted, there are internal problems with the keyboard as stated previously, however these are mere annoyances, and the pros of this system greatly outweigh the cons.
This machine has never given me a problem hardware wise, and in fact, this is the first machine in which I did not have to reinstall windows every month.
It serves as a "decent" gaming system, of course it is not the best, but it is fairly good for being mobile, and under a grand. It offers two hard drive bays internally, so you may add extra storage without the need of a external hard drive.
Also, overclockers will love this machine as you can stably overclock the 1.8ghz processor to 2.0ghz with no adverse effects (aside from lower battery life).
There is a built in IR sensor for the little remote control that comes with it, but according to a recent HP BIOS update, this IR sensor will also work with the Media Center Edition remote, although I have not tried, since I do not own XP MCE.
I have not had any problems with my hard drive in this computer. Mine is a 80gb Seagate, and from experence, Seagate drives are also rock solid. This machine has taken a few hits and bumps and there is not a single problem with my hard drive to this day.
As for the sound system, one reviewer pointed out that the system does not have a line in. This is correct, but that can be corrected with a cheap USB audio card. You can find them for under $20 and they will do the job. However, the good points about the internal sound system is that is very powerful. It can go quite loud for a mobile machine, loud enough where you can hear it over an old 4x4 truck engine. Also, the speakers are Altec Lansing, and not some generic $1 headphone-like speakers that come in most laptops, like the Viao i owned previously. Therefore the system is capable of putting out enough bass through the built in speakers so that it does not sound like a telephone.
Battery life is as advertised if you are just surfing the net, or listening to music. However, as expected, power-demanding applications such as games, or anything using the CD Drive will of course lower the battery life. This model is also not suspected to the battery recall that has been going on lately, so you can buy in confidence that your battery will not randomly explode.
Ventilation is all on the left hand side of the system, (fan blows out the back, however the airflow is pulled from the bottom) so if you are using it on your lap, you will find yourself putting the right side of the computer on your lap. This isn't as bad as it sounds, however it can be awkward at times.
One small problem is with the appearance, although I believe this would effect any system, but after repeated prolonged use, my trackpad and part of my from speaker grill has had the paint worn off. Also, the CD drive is a bit loud as another reviewer has stated.
If you intend to use this system with Windows XP x64 Edition (64-bit), you will find yourself hunting for drivers, as HP will not help you. However, drivers exist for all of the hardware in this system. If requested in a comment to this review, I will upload the drivers to my website and post the URL so that you can find the x64 drivers for this system.
For those reading this who use Linux, the system is also very compatible with Linux. There are some loopholes you may have to jump through to get the Wireless card to work, but that is normal for Linux, from my experience. Both x86 (32-bit), and amd64 (64-bit) Linux works beautifully.
Also, this machine is 100% Windows Vista Compatible, being as I have ran Windows Vista Ultimate RC2 on it and it performs very smoothly.
But as I said, the pros outweigh the cons, and this machine is well worth the money, considering it is upgradeable (even the CPU if you know what you are doing, even though it is hard to get to).
Not quite ready for primetime........2006-10-02
I'm having some major issues with the keyboard. The latest bios doesn't fix a thing.Problem shutting down and launching programs on the machine.
Stay away

Customer Reviews:
Good player, bad manual and menus.......2002-01-24
I have not had any issues since instaling this DVD player. The picture and sound are very good. The manual and on-screen setup menus are very weak. I am very technical and had to wing my way to getting this thing to work. If you want to play MPEGS on this player you need to check the compatability.
Great DVD.......2001-01-01
After researching several DVD players we settled on Philips due to the fact that we have a Philips TV. So far its been great. No problem with movies or music cds, easy to hook up, set-up and install. Intutive instructions and display, good remote. If you are willing to spend the money you'll have a good piece of equipment that will last.
Sweet DVD Player.......2000-10-30
This here is the best dvd player on amazon. It's not too expensive and it's got everything that you'll need. Nice remote and it won't screw up your tv like other ones do. This is an average price for an awesome system. If I were you I would buy it! Right away!

Not worth it.......2006-08-30
Have had issues from the start. Only a 4x, very picky about using DVD-, prefers DVD+. Now after 2 years it has quit reading discs at all. Maybe I got a bad one, but go with better brand and you will be better served.
People are weird, and this gem is great!!!.......2005-05-04
I have no idea why everyone's all mean to this Pacific Digital product. I mean, it's a pretty cheap price, but a good product for what ur paying. I refurbished a desktop, and added this DVD Burner, and it's been working fine ever since. I have no complaints whatsoever. I think the people who are whining about it should've paid more money for a better name-brand product. But, as I said, for the price, it's a good burner.
aweful.......2004-09-17
Buyer beware must be Pacific Digital's mantra. The USB 2.0 dvd burner I bought from them died in under six months. The burner, a lite-on, was fine it was their enclosure that failed. Their customer service was horrendous as was the shipping that I was forced to pay to receive replacement parts, which still have not arrived. If you are looking for a product that will give you reliable service and lasting performance STAY AWAY from pacific digital!!!!
Multi-Heaven.......2004-03-23
I was skeptical when I chose this one, since it was milti-format, and could get for only 100 bones, but it works great! I have had mine for a couple of months now, and I have burned a LOT of DVD's with it. Works great, I would recomend this to all who need a reliable DVD burner, that doesn't degrade the post burn picture.

Excellent with some limitations.......2006-06-21
The sound experience is incredible. The subwoofer is incredibly powerful.
The DVD player unfortunately has problems playing burned DVDs, however. Tried DVD +R and DVD -Rs, and neither seem to work. I am amazed that Onkyo didn't think of this.
