Amazon.com Product Description
Built for digital photography, the HP Pavilion zx5280us notebook PC is the choice for you if you've got the digital photography bug. Take all your photos with you in the lightweight and powerful Pavilion zx5280us. It features a powerful 3.2 GHz Pentium 4 processor (with Hyper-Threading technology), a large 80 GB hard drive, and 1024 MB DDR SDRAM. Plus, the preloaded software--including HP's Image Zone software for editing, storing, protecting, and sharing photos--has everything you need to manage your growing digital photo collection.
The Basics
- Hard Drive: The 80 GB enhanced IDE hard drive (4200 RPM) has ample room for digital photos you'll want to store.
- Processor: The 3.2 GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor has a 2 MB L2 cache, and features Hyper-Threading technology to boost your laptop's performance. Hyper-Threading helps a PC run multiple applications at the same time, which enables the processor to execute two threads (a part of a program) in parallel, boosting performance. This results in more efficient software performance (such as faster reaction times in gaming applications) and enhanced multitasking.
- Memory: It has 1024 MB DDR SDRAM (in 1 memory slot) to speed up the processing of applications--even games, digital audio, and digital video software.
- CD/DVD Drive: A CD-RW/DVD+RW combo drive lets you save your photos to disc, burn your own digital audio discs, watch DVDs, and even burn to DVDs.
- Keyboard & Mouse: It has a 101-key compatible keyboard with a touchpad, an on/off button, and a dedicated vertical scroll up/down pad.
- Display: The 15.4 inch WXGA high-definition BrightView widescreen display, with a 1280 x 800 native resolution, gives you more than enough room for your everyday applications, and is ideal for watching DVDs.
Sound and Graphics
The Pavilion zx5280us features an ATI MOBILITY RADEON 9600 with 128 MB dedicated DDR (which means that it doesn't share memory with the CPU). The internal Harman Kardon speakers and 16-bit Sound Blaster Pro-compatible sound card are built to pump out clear, bright sound, and feature volume control and mute buttons.
Connectivity and Expansion Slots
Get online quickly and easily with the 54g 802.11b/g integrated wireless LAN with 125HSM/SpeedBooster support or via the 10/100 Base-T Ethernet LAN. It also features the following external ports:
- 3 USB 2.0 ports for connecting to a wide range of peripherals, from digital cameras to MP3 players
- 1 IEEE 1394 FireWire port to connect to digital video cameras or other peripherals
- 1 parallel port for connecting to printers or cameras based on older technologies
- 1 S-video port to connect your laptop to your television
- 1 PC Card slot for adding a variety of upgrades, including memory, modems, portable disk drives, and more
- 1 VGA video out port for connecting to an external monitor
- 1 infrared (Fast Infrared) port for syncing your notebook with other laptops equipped with infrared ports or with your PDA
- 1 headphone out
- 1 microphone in
- 1 RJ-11 for connecting the modem
- 1 5-in-1 integrated digital media reader for Secure Digital cards, MultiMediaCard, Memory Stick, Memory Stick Pro, or SmartMedia cards

The HP Pavilion zx5280us notebook is powered by Windows XP Home Edition, which makes it easy for you to get up and running as quickly as possible. It's packed with multimedia features to help you get your creative juices flowing. Windows Media Player lets you burn and play CDs, in addition to playing and organizing digital audio files. Windows MovieMaker is a basic video editing tool that helps you capture and edit digital video to save your memories and share them with others.

Customer Reviews:
Happy, but puzzled........2005-04-24
I bought this at BestBuy for like 1,600 bucks, which was a rip off. They were selling it for 2,100, but I bought the last one they had (the floor model). I don't know what happened with this system, but it only had 512 RAM, which BestBuy upgraded for free to 1 gig. The ram is kinda set up funny, there's a built in 512 slot, and then aother slot in which you can throw in up to a 1 gig stick, so it's only upgradeable to 1.5 gigs of RAM. Mind you, the 1 gig stick (from NewEgg at the time of writting this) was selling for over 300 dollars.
I think it's alright, I've only had it for about a week. Everything runs well and looks nice, but I'm trying to find some more accessories for it, including an extra battery (mind you, it dies in less than 2 hours). It's got enough power that I use it for gaming while I'm away from home; it runs Call of Duty just fine, and Half-Life 2 with some pretty relaxed graphics and a fairly longer load time. I pretty much only keep games on the main hard-drive, everything else I have an external USB drive for, and it works just fine.
I've been experimenting with setting up a network, I still haven't been able to link my desktop to my notebook and transfer files freely, which is fairly disappointing. I've run all of the Windows XP Network Wizard's and I the PC's are talking to eachother, I just can't share files yet. I've also been trying to experiment with other people's Wi-Fi networks, this computer seems to be fully compatable for anyone looking to do that sort of thing.
I bought an external mouse and keyboard, but the keyboard on the zx5280us is pretty nice (large enough to be comfortable); I just don't care for the traditional laptop mouse.
The screen looks nice, it runs at 1280x800 with 32 bits. The Mobility Radeon 9600 @ 128MBs isn't too bad for a laptop at all; it's got all the power I need for gaming. Just don't expect anything insane like Doom 3 at highest resolution; but it will run the game and you can still enjoy it.
Of course, out of the box it took me about 10 hours to totally set up and customize; which was kinda disappointing. But now I've almost got everything I want. I had to download XP Home Service Pack 2, and about 4 hours worth of updates. Also this computer DOES NOT HAVE ANY ANTI-VIRUS SOFTWARE. You'll need to get some and it will probably cost you around 80 bucks (at least).
This guy really isn't for someone looking for mobility, it needs to stay plugged in, and it's heavier then the majorty of laptops out there; but it certainlly is capable of being used on the go.
So with all these cons, why the 4 stars? It's because it comes with everything I need. I play games on it, I can set up the internet easily on it, it's got enough power to do whatever I want to do within reason. Few pre-built laptops come with a 128MB graphics card and a 3.2 ghz processor. If I wanted the same thing from a Voodoo Systems or Alienware; it would cost 3,000 bucks; easily. I can play the newest games on there at low resolution, that's all I wanted from my laptop, and I'm satisfied.
Desktop Replacement.......2004-10-14
With something this size and this much power, it's probably not going to be a good mobile solution, but rather something to replace your desktop and still offer some mobility. There's always tradeoffs with size, power, and energy consumption - that's electronics.
I didn't have a desktop to replace, but this would've done the job. I purchased this notebook (...). That was a few months ago, and you still can't build a better system on Dell for that price.
It runs all the day-to-day stuff fine, and is terrific with graphics-intensive apps. I've been running Far Cry in 1024x768x32 mode with moderate settings, plus high texture quality, and there's very few noticeable slowdowns (Far Cry is known to be a demanding game). It can burn an audio cd in under 5 minutes, and I've done some decent video editing using both Wax 2.0 (freeware from debugmode.com - it's a little buggy) and Windows XP Movie Maker - free download from Microsoft. I've done a little Java coding and HTML editing on it using the NetBeans free IDE/compiler (netbeans.org), and it's fairly quick with that as well. My only complaint here is about the graphics/display configuration - ATI's is alright, but it's no nView. nView is the display configurator/toys/tools thing from nVidia, and it's just nicer than ATI's stuff. It seems like ATI edges past NVidia on the graphics/performance, but nVidia put more effort into their tool. I may look for a GeForceFX on my next system. (As a side note, if you're ever thinking linux, nVidia seems to have marginally more support, although if their standard drivers don't work, don't hold your breath waiting for tech support).
At 15.4", and heavier than most laptops, this is not the most portable solution - if you're on the go a lot, get something smaller. Battery life is also not very good - less than the running time of an average movie on DVD. If you know you'll be able to plug it in, you'll be fine, otherwise it may not be worth lugging.
I purchased this because where I currently live I don't really have the room or the permanency for a desktop system, but wanted similar power, and I think I've gotten pretty much what I expected.
Pros (all about power):
- Great Graphics - the Radeon Mobility 9600 w/128 MB.
- Lots of RAM (1024 MB)
- DVD/CD Writing
- 3.2 GHz --> Fast CPU (for the time being, anyways)
- WiFi b/g + LAN ethernet + modem --> connectivity galore
- Multi-cardreader reads my SD card just fine.
Cons (not particularly mobile):
- It gets pretty hot.
- Screen contrast average (watching movies across a room is difficult, especially darker scenes).
- No nView
- Battery life bad.
- Included software is basic - Just MSWorks, trials of some other real applications. Pick up UT2004, Doom3, or FarCry + a decent mouse for games if you want to test the graphics.
I can't find a bag/backpack big enough to carry this thing plus accessories.
UPDATE TO REVIEW:
I have a couple more cons to add since last review.
Battery Life. After about a year, the battery died. The big box store I bought it at replaced it under their 3 year warranty.
It's really loud. And I think it's getting louder. Hard drive noise or fan noise or a combination. But you will always know whether this machine is on or off.
The hard drive's really slow. Programs just take a while to launch due to the low speed of the hard drive.
Also, I would deduct a star just based on current value - better faster systems are on the market now. Unfortunately, Amazon won't let me change the star rating. Weird.
Really bad quality.......2004-09-29
Bad quality... sent it back twise in few months for service for same problem, that is still not fixed. Really pathetic quality, with even more pathetic service... Don't get it...

Customer Reviews:
Incredibly fast scanner.......2005-02-22
We just received this scanner, and it installed instantly. It scans quickly, feeding about 2 seconds per page at 200 dpi and a little over 4 seconds per page at 400 dpi.
We've seen scanners absolutely wreck a computer system, probably due to driver problems, but we checked and did not have that problem with this scanner: the software appears to have been professionally written, though a warning pops up stating that it has not been checked for compatibility by Microsoft.
Pluses are it's fast, easy to install, and very compact: about 1/2 the footprint of an HP Laserjet 4100, but to use it you do have to pull out input and output trays that increases its footprint to about twice its size. It appears to have a very solid paper handling. After watching it work, you can tell it isn't likely to jam or misfeed.
However, the minuses are that it, like a lot of scanners, slightly skews the page, so it looks a little crooked. Most copiers will not do this, so it can't be used to replace a copier.
I run a law firm and our scanning needs are pretty modest, but after seeing how quickly this unit works, we'll be scanning a lot more. I can't say I'm thrilled about the very slight page skew, which my other scanners also have (but they were 1/4 the price) and yet my copy machines don't have, but I haven't played with it fully to see if there is something we can do to correct it.
Update 5/30/06: the skew has to do with the fact that the paper guides spread apart over time as the unit is feeding pages. We put a small marking pen (like a fine tipped sharpie) between one of the moveable guides and the side of the input tray and it has stopped the skew entirely. I'd rate the unit 5 stars now. Most marking pens are slightly cone shaped, so you can put the pen in until it stops and it will hold the moveable paper guides in place. You only need to use one pen: the guides are connected.

Customer Reviews:
TV has great features!!.......2002-01-19
This TV has great features such as the TVGuide+ and PIP. Color and sound are great. Did find a problem with the instruction booklet. Does not give enough information on how to connect with other devices especially a cable box. Took a while to figure out how to hook it up for myself. PIP feature did not work with any of the diagrams they had in book. Also had little info on how to use the PIP feature. Also had a little bit of a problem with the downloading of the TVGuide+ programs lineup. Finally found correct connection to get everything working and now I'm much happier!
RCA F27689 27" TV with Program Guide, A/V and S-Video, PIP.......2001-07-11
This TV has a great picture and the PIP is a nice feature. The program guide is wonderful and the stereo sound is great. The remote is large and cumbersome but has everything you need for vcr and tv on remote. Overall a great buy in a name brand that I have purchased many times in the past.

Not quite equivalent........2005-06-08
Although this looks like the Panasonic OEM battery, for some reason it only lasts about 80% as long as the OEM. Even after many charge/discharge cycles. I have not tried the Lenmar, but it looks even closer to the OEM. It even has similar stickers and it costs less.
