Good player with very good build quality. Seems to have decent battery life. Screen relatively small by current standards. I really like the BBE sound processing/surround, which is adjustable....far as I know, still the only player with this. If one likes rock music/electric guitars this at least IMHO is good.....sort of enhances the guitars and decreases the vocal level in the mix..hard to explain, but can turn off in any event. No stop switch but pause swith there. Can record from FM. Shows up in windoze as another drive, don't need any stupid software to move your stuff onto it. If somebody has a big collection of music mp3/wma and no corporate control this is a good deal. Folders arranged like a windows/dos format, which I like. I like the sound.

No belt clip or case, if you get lucky you might find one here or on the net somewhere. The joystick is annoying...difficult to fast forward without skipping to the next song...not good for podcasts with commercials. Annoying cheap/flimsy sub pack you have to attach at the bottom to charge or move files. This and the fast-forward thing are HIGHLY ANNOYING.

However iAudio have leaked (?) details of an X7 coming later this year. In the meantime this is arguably the best AUDIO player you can get (no, for video pick something else please).

If you don't like the user interface and want true 'gapless' audio playback you can load it with the 'Rockbox' firmware (at some risk to your Cowon warranty, and loss of .wma and USB-to-go functionality).

Why is it so great - sound quality. Sound quality. Battery life. Oh, and did I mention sound quality. I've owned many different DAPs, and this one kicks the others into touch. Build quality is pretty solid too (look Ma, real metal!).

Not the smallest player on the planet. Not the sexiest. And yeah, the subpack is a PITA, so maybe they'll fix that for the X7. I just hope they don't skimp on components, and mess up what the X5 (and M5, if you can find one) were good at - playing music. Lots of music. Oh and a user swappable battery pack would be a good idea too, although the L model can stand quite a lot of [...] in the battery life before the playtime becomes a big problem (not so the basic X5).

It was a nice little thing for a couple of months. After that it just froze. Aparently that happens often with COWAN (where's the pride?). anyways, since then it's a drag to repair the unit. I would definately advise the people to buy an Ipod.

Weighing in here, I think I can add a little bit more to discussion of this product:

PROS:

* supports unicode character song titles and folder names (this means if your song title is written in Chinese, it'll display in Chinese on the player's screen; because I have a unicode library this was very important to me)

* supports multiple file types, meaning you are not locked into converting all your songs to a proprietary format (my library is a huge mixture of file types and iAudio plays them all -- so awesome)

* the X5L is small -- much smaller than I'd thought

* my whole CD collection fit onto the 30GB storage with room to spare -- another reason I liked this unit

* bright, big LCD screen

* it's not an iPod and not made by Apple

* volume can be easily adjusted without looking at the device

* music libraries can be dragged and dropped into the player and they are ready to play (very important feature for somebody who already has their music library organized in the way they want it in the player)

NEGS:

* the joystick navigation is not intuitive. Once you navigate up or down to your song of choice, you're going to hit "Right" on the joystick, right? No, you press "Down." Now you're ready to go back so you're going to hit "Left" right? No, you press "Down." Baffling and stupid

* no "stop" button -- want to stop the music? You can't. You have to turn off the unit

* in order to charge or connect the unit to your computer, an add-on component is required

* the ear-buds don't stay in your ears and the cord is a different length on each ear

* protective case or belt holder not included with unit

In general I'm actually very happy with this unit. Like the other reviewers, I was waiting for the just the right type of mp3 player to come out before I bought something. This comes pretty close. I can carry my entire CD collection in my hand which is what I was shooting for, and the unit supports unicode titles and folders. Likewise, I was able to drag and drop and already-organized music library into the unit and it worked perfectly. So, this is a product with good merit.

What would make this unit a superior product is: a carry-case with a belt clip included with the unit or available somewhere on the market. (I have yet to find a good one.) And the power/USB connectors should be right on the unit rather than on a special attachment. Also the navigation system should be intuitive; I don't mind the joystick if the system works, but its current programming is clunky and awkward.

I feel very bitter sweet about this purchase. It does what its supposed to do, with all the right features. I'm glad I own it. But Cowon would do well to listen to these issues and correct them next time around.

Excellent Product.......2007-01-29

I spent several weeks searching for a replacement for my last mp3 player, a Creative Zen -- I wanted something with no DRM and no cumbersome software interface (i.e. as far away from an iPod as possible).

I was a bit dubious about going with this brand, never having heard of them before, but many excellent reviews convinced me to give the X5L a shot.

I've had the X5L for several months now and it is performing flawlessly. It sounds great, the battery life is amazing, the interface is simple and it hooks up instantly to any PC via USB cables.

Yes, the little add-on thingy that you need to attach to charge it is a bit of a pain, but it's not that big a deal (especially since I only have to charge about once per week).

Also, note that the video quality is not great -- you have to convert files with the JetAudio software, and the picture quality takes a big hit -- if you expect to watch lots of video, this is NOT a good player. However, if you're mainly interested in music, and see the video as an added bonus, then the X5L is an excellent choice.

For the price, you really can't do much better if you want a large capacity mp3 player that isn't crippled by DRM. I highly recommend it.

Configuration... doesn't work.......2003-10-10

Trying to plug it into a Dell system (laptop) with Windows 2000 and USB 1. (not 2)...

I can *read* files from the drive, but using the included software to try to format a disk results in a disc that the software says is formated (after 25 minutes of formating!) but doesn't work.

So it is worthless. I am forced to chose between dealing with tech support (can't find this in the FAQ or anywhere else) or returning it to the store... and getting an Iomega, which is what I'll do.

I bought a QPS back in April, I had configuration issues right away.
I followed the tech support format and emailed them. Giving them benefit of possibly being busy or email issues I emailed four times over four weeks from seperate servers. They do not respond through support.
Now the hardware failed, I repeated the email attempts with no response and have phone support three times in two weeks to give up in Cue after 45 minutes. No 1-800 number.
Now I have a very high phone Bill coming and a useless QPS device that I will eat also.
Please don't allow companies like this to thrive, which they all too commonly do in todays market.
Buy elsewhere.

This product is great, but the customer service [stinks]!!! The CD-RW drive works great its very fast and super portable. I would reconmend it to people that want a fast drive but don't want to spend alot of money.

Shameful technical support.......2002-06-04

It works fast, but has given me plenty of problems when connected to a USB2 adapter. Worse yet, I've spent over an hour waiting for technical support staff without them ever picking up (and it's not a toll free number). When I have gotten through, the advice has not been consistently correct. All in all, I've spent four hours in two months working through technical problems, and it is currently on the fritz.

Ive had my cd player for like a year and it had a couple problem with it I dropped it once about 2 feet of the ground on the top broke off but it was easy to fix but it made it so the radio didnt work any more and it skips some if you bang it around it alittle But its still an okay cd player

VERY CRAPPY WASTE OF MONEY.......2003-03-17

I was on the bus listening to music and the bus went over a speed-bump and it BROKE! Yes as we went over the bump the lid came off and it broke. Then we returned it for a new one and It's buttons didnt work and the headset broke in 4 days! Also the track skip is very bad, it skips every 10 seconds, litteraly. even if your sitting down and its setting on the table the slightest touch on it and it will skip to another song. THIS IS A RIP-OFF! IT IS A WASTE OF MONEY DO NOT BUY!

great cd player.......2002-07-27

this is an amazing cd player. it has all you could want and more. great sound, great features, lightweight, has a great color, and you can listen to FM stations. my only complaint is that that FM antenae could be a tad bit stonger. otherwise, this player is excellent for its price. i'm actually buying a new one cuz i dropped my old one and although it still works perfectly, i decided it was time for a change. i was about to get something else, but i couldn't find another player that matched this one.

inexpensive and a fine product.......2005-04-28

well, my dad bought it about 3 or 4 years ago maybe longer and even today its still a great camcorder. granted, i havent used it much, but everytime i have used it i was always happy with the results.

all i would want more of is the zoom, but the 20X isnt bad at all and has done a good job.

i personally like it alot and dont see my self getting a new one any time soon.

panasonic builds great, quality products. heck you can see my last months review of the FZ20 digital camera i bought and i love it as well.

This is a good basic camcorder.......2001-10-04

We just purchased this unit for our new baby girls. We wanted a simple camcorder that was relatively inexpensive that would shoot a good picture. We have been pleasantly suprised on how well the picture quality is. The battery life is pretty good too. So far there is nothing really to say bad about the unit, other than how much the extra battery pack costs. We looked at another unit that you could take digital still pictures with a regular VHS-C camcorder. But after thinking about having to carry it around to just take still pictures, we decided against that. We also considered a digital camcorder. Aside from the higher (and sometimes much higher) price, I wanted to be able to view the output easily and also be able to send it to family and friends. All in all, this is a good basic camcorder at a good price.

The Panasonic KX-FP121 packs numerous professional-level features in a plain-paper fax that is affordable and compact enough to fit any small office. This model combines traditional fax capabilities with a built-in digital answering machine for increased functionality.

The KX-FP121 holds up to 150 sheets in its paper tray, which is located at the back of the machine, and accepts up to 15 sheets in its automatic document feeder. The unit doesn't have a paper stacker, however, so you need to leave some desk space in front of it.

The KX-FP121 offers voice capabilities via a handset and speakerphone. These features are located on the left side of the machine, next to a large button keypad and the usual start and stop buttons. An LCD panel displays fax status, menus, and caller ID information, while three nearby buttons let you easily control the machine's digital answering machine. Perhaps the most distinctive Panasonic control is the jog dial--a thumbwheel that offers quick access to stored numbers, menu settings, and voice messages.

We were able to set up the Panasonic quickly and found the documentation comprehensive. One pleasant surprise was the recorded voice prompts that informed us of fax status. The digital answering machine and jog dial were both easy and quick to master. We did, however, experience occasional double-feeding when loading faxes over six pages in length. Nevertheless, we were very pleased with the unit's memory capacity and operation.

A number of remote features add to the product's value. For example, you can set the KX-FP121 to automatically dial a telephone number to forward voice messages as they come in. The unit can also dial your pager when it receives a fax or voice message. An IQ-FAX button on the control panel gives you quick access to FaxSav, an Internet faxing service for economical worldwide transmission.

The print quality is better than I expected and all the features that I actually use (send/receive/copy) can be done without ever looking at the manual. The messages on the display and the recorded voice give useful information and warnings, too (low on toner, out of paper, etc).

After using two of these Panasonic fax machines, I will not buy another. When it works, it's great, but the paper feeder is very unreliable and then the machine starts beeping even though it has paper. If the machine has any error whatsoever, it will make loud, audible beeps until the machine detects the error resolved, not when you think it's fixed. If you buy this fax, make sure you won't use it much.

This is my first home office fax so I do not have anything to compare against but my initial reaction is as follows:

Pros: 1)Sending/Receiving Faxes and Making Copies are simple tasks 2)Retrieving voice messages is a simple task 3)Saves space on the desk 4)Preloaded greetings are clear and present a professional image.

Cons: 1)Noisier than I expected 2)Print quality is slightly less than expected 3)Too many functions make it more complex to use...I need the manual(thick) to perform the steps for some functions 4)Adding phone directory entries is awkward 5)The absence of a paper stacker results in paper on the floor; however, it can be ordered separately for approximately $12.
