The Basics
IBM may be recognized for its high-end business-oriented computers, but this model, the ThinkCentre M50p Desktop PC (8189E8U), proves that "Big Blue" hasn't forgotten the budget-conscious home-based end user either. Sporting a snappy processor and adequate memory but a small hard drive, entry-level graphics support and no CD recording abilities, this system is ideal for those who don't plan to venture beyond computing basics such as word processing, personal finances, email communication and light Internet surfing. Demanding users, music fans and gamers may want to steer clear, but if price is a serious issue and only an IBM will do, the ThinkCentre M50p is a smart solution.

Processor
At the heart of any computer lies the CPU (or processor), a massive collection of miniature transistors that governs the speed and power of the entire unit. Many entry-level desktops utilize second tier processors such as an Intel Celeron, yet the ThinkCentre M50p takes advantage of Intel's powerful Pentium 4 line. This particular CPU is a midlevel Pentium 4, operating at 2.8 GHz and utilizing Intel's new Hyper-Threading technology (Hyper-Threading allows a single CPU system to behave at times as a dual CPU system, thus adding substantially more speed to some high-end applications). Though this processor is definitely fast enough to form the basis of a high-end PC, the overall performance of any computer is influenced by a variety of factors, including the quality of its video controller, the capacity of its hard drive, and the amount and speed of its memory. And as you'll see, the ThinkCentre M50p is not overly strong in the latter two of these areas.

Memory
Computers typically store information on their hard drive, but they keep frequently and recently accessed data in Random Access Memory (RAM) for faster retrieval. More RAM means more efficient computing, superior multitasking and less strain on your hard drive. IBM has partnered this unit's processor with 512 MB of PC2700 DDR SDRAM main memory. This is today's average allotment of desktop PC memory, allowing fast multitasking and quicker operation during complex procedures. Moreover, users may upgrade their memory to a whopping 4 GB, more than enough for anything the future may bring.

Video
CPU's are usually so busy doing basic calculations that they need help translating visual output to the viewing screen. This is the duty of the graphics card (or graphics controller). A graphics controller with "dedicated" video memory is preferable to a controller that "shares" the system's main memory, as it better handles complex procedures. IBM has equipped the ThinkCentre M50p with an Intel Extreme Graphics 2 video controller that is integrated on the motherboard and shares 32 MB of the system's main memory. As such, the unit is not recommended to anyone who regularly works or plays with 3D graphics, unless they first purchase and install a separate "dedicated" graphics card. A display screen is not enclosed, thus allowing you to continue using your current monitor or select from today's many alternatives.

Sound
Audio is produced via a SoundMAX Cadenza audio chip integrated on the motherboard. Though not as sophisticated as some standalone audio cards, this integrated chipset produces both stereo and surround sound and is perfectly adequate for most applications. Speakers are not included.

Hard Drive
The built-in 40 MB hard drive sports enough space for a low demand home or home office situation or student setup. However, if you're someone who loads large applications, saves large files, or maintains a sizeable multimedia or music collection, you'll either need to upgrade this drive, transfer larger files to a compact disc to free up room, or add another hard drive.

Optical Drive
An optical drive is essential in today's computing world. A "CD-ROM" drive allows you to install CD-based applications and play music CDs. A "CD-RW" drive adds CD "burning", so you can also backup your important files to long-lasting discs and create personalized music CDs. With a DVD-ROM drive you can enjoy all of the above plus watch the same big budget DVD movies you watch on your home entertainment system. And with a DVD-RW drive, you can also "write" home movies to durable discs and archive files to DVD (DVDs boast more than seven times the storage capacity of CDs).

The ThinkCentre M50p features a CD-ROM drive that allows you to install applications from CD and play music CDs. In order to burn CDs or play and record DVDs, you'll need to purchase a separate drive with those capabilities.

Connectivity and Expansion
With eight high-speed USB 2.0 ports (two conveniently located on the front) at your disposal, you'll have plenty of room for plug and play peripherals and gadgets such as digital cameras and printers. IBM has not included an IEEE 1394 FireWire port, most commonly used for fast data transfer from digital camcorders. Communication options include an integrated 100Mbps networking interface for fast Internet and network communication and a low-speed 56K dial-up modem.

Operating System and Software
The ThinkCentre M50p features an average software package headed by Microsoft's Windows XP Home Edition operating system. IBM will also pre-install full licensed versions of Lotus Notes Stand-alone Client, Lotus SmartSuite Millennium, and a small selection of diagnostic and Internet utilities.

PNY's Customer Service is non-existent........2005-03-07

I bought a flash drive pen product from PNY August 2004. It worked fine for a about 6 months then the drive fried and I lost everything on it. The pen portion had a 30 day warranty and the drive has a one year warranty. I checked out PNY's website, they sent me a RMA return form, label, etc... with instructions to send the "defective" part, and a copy of the invoice, so I sent them exactly what they asked for. They returned the item back to me stating that I hadn't sent the entire item[without contacting me even though I gave them 3 phone numbers]. I'd just sent the drive, not the pen portion [since that was a separate warranty item and they only stated to send the defective part]. So, I resent it and included the pen portion [postage twice now, return receipt as they recommend, of about $10]. I have now received an email stating they are sending it back "again" not stating why in the email, but that an explanation will be provided with the product return. No telephone numbers have been included in anything for me to talk to a live person. What a run around.

My advice is: Do NOT buy a PNY product unless you think it will make it through the warranty period and you won't ever need customer service. There are plenty of manufacturers with better product AND good customer service.

Excellent unit if you can still find one.......2007-06-11

If you take multiple notes and have to be able to later review them quickly this unit can save hours of time and frustration - once in the cradle you can jump back and forth, "rewind" and "fast-forward" with ease. Also, no more fumbling with microscopic controls and indecipherable output, the cradle controls are large enough to use easily, and the internal speaker provides much clearer replay.

I don't know if Panasonic still makes these - I bought mine refurb, but they do show up on eBay from time to time.

This is a great camera and buy. the quality is exceptional and with a one hundred dollar external mic it has superior performance. It has dv in and out and av in out and still picture is very nice. i do not owne this product but use it almost every day in my video production class

The Best Little Buddy.......2006-03-08

The DCR-TRV27 is the best camera I've owned. I study film at Cal State Long Beach, and have worked for public television, ESPN, and several student films. I have twenty years of home movie making experience and have recorded over one hundred hours of MiniDV tape with my Sony camcorder.

Cons: Single CCD only. (3 CCD has superior color in low light)
The lens is 30mm, so there is less variety among lenses and filters than the more popular 37mm.
Digital Effects must be selected everytime the unit is powered on. I like the slow shutter effect, but it's a nuisance to select it in the menu whenever I want to shoot.
Wish the focus ring was bigger--easier to manipulate.
The built-in mic picks up the whine of the camcorder. I use an external mic in quiet rooms.
The MiniDV format: what else can you play it on? I'm going to get a MiniDV VCR to save wear on my camcorder.

Pros: The perfect size, small enough to take anywhere, not so small that my fingers can't find the buttons.
Has Sony i-Link (IEEE 1394) interface, and functions as a codec, allowing me to capture video in an editing program, and record the finished cut to tape. I can even send analogue signals from my old VHS tapes to the computer through the TRV27.
Simple design allows me to hand it off to anybody to get me in the scene.
Large viewscreen.
Data Code (can be displayed on or off during playback) dat/time stamps all my footage so I never have to guess when I made that thing back in the place that one time.
Manual focus and exposure control is an absolute must.
The battery lasts for hours, even after four years. (I bought the InfoLITHIUM M Sony 12 hour battery.)

The Bottom Line: I love my camcorder and recommend it to anyone who just wants to play with video. It's an excellent tool to learn on, with brilliant picture and good sound.

I have owned this product for several years and I can say it has been a solid performer the whole way. capturing all of the best memories of my life to date superbly. not once have I had any mechanical failure or mishap. this is a great camcorder and truly a quality product surviving many family events.

I've used the DCR-TRV27 for almost a year and a half now. Excellent image quality, light weight, great battery life, data flows through FireWire to computer very well.

Down sides: Sony's web site doesn't even acknowledge they ever made this camera; searching on its model number will not produce any results. So if you lost the manual, the best source to get it in .pdf form is Amazon! Also, the zoom is a little over-sensitive.

These are minor quibbles though. For the money, this camera is a bargain.

Versatile and High Quality.......2003-12-17

I bought this unit for Christmas 2003. After one year, the device is still flawless.

The features are more than enough to satisfy the recreational videographer. I usually use the automatic settings (auto focus, auto brightness, etc.) whenever I can, but I'm glad the device has so many options, if I find myself in a situation where I need them.

The 9-point auto focus is spectacular. While most camcorders use a single point to focus, this unit has a group of 9 points or boxes it uses to determine the optimum focus for the shot. It's really amazing, and almost instantaneous.

I love the small size, and the 3.5" LCD screen is much better than the 2.5". When taking video of people, especially kids, they love it when I flip the screen toward them, so they can see themselves. To them, it's like they are on TV. They tend to be more expressive. When I do this, I just look throught the viwfinder to keep the subject in frame.

It's rugged. My wife dropped it at Disney World 9 months ago. It scratched the case a bit, but otherwise the unit wasn't phased.

I've made a few CD-ROM-based videos on my computer. The Sony TRV27 easily transfers video to the computer through the Firewire connection. The USB connection also works, but the compressed image quality is far worse the the pure Firewire transfer.

It's nice to have the capabilities to shoot digital stils. However, the 640x480 1 megapixel image is too low-res for printing phoro-lab quality prints on a photo inkjet printer.

I think of the digital camera feature as a quite a bit above most cell phone cameras, and quite a bit below most 3+ megapixel cameras.

Battery life is great. I have not yet bought a spare, and haven't needed it. If I shot more video, I would probably get one of the larger batteries, which would, however, make the unit a little heavier.

All in all, this is an excellent product. I'm sure the newest models are even better. Sony costs a bit more than some of the other brands, but when it comes to camcorders, you can't beat 'em.

Devices that require consumables (such as printers, CD-R drives, cars, etc.) are the gifts that keep on giving (or, rather, taking away) as you constantly purchase the ingredient it needs to keep performing properly. That said, I've had my SuperScript 860 for 5 years, and I'm just now looking to replace the toner cartridge - after printing some 5600 pages. I hope that this replacement cartridge will serve as long.
