I ordered and received an Iomega Zip 750 MB External USB drive. I have returned it, only to find out that I am not being refuned the full amount because of some bogus return policy charge.

You need to refund me 100% of the money I spent on the faulty product. It should never cost the customer anything when they buy a defective product. Where is there a phone number so I can call and talk to a real person?

Most people won't need this drive.......2004-10-31

I have been using Zip disks for over 6 years now. 98% of the time, me and my colleagues use 100MB disks, and the rest of the time we use 250MB. I have never seen anyone use 750MB disks, and have never seen any computer with a 750MB Zip drive (except the one I own). That means most people would never use this drive for transferring stuff between computers. The only reason for getting this drive is if you want to back up your own files, but that can be done much better using CDs and DVDs. Besides its limited use, this 750MB drive can read from but not write to 100MB disks, which can be quite inconvenient at times. On the other hand, a 250MB drive can read from and write to both 250MB and 100MB disks. So, you may be better off getting a 250MB Zip drive.

Omigod---just bought two of these drives and now they both, with regularity, destroy any disks used in them. But not immediately...everything works great for about 3-4 files, then at some point the drive starts to run, and run, and run---and at the end, you have no files, and 250 MB disks cannot be reformatted (can only do short format on these). Iomega gneraously replaced my disks; great, now all the replacements are corrupted. I guess it's the click of death--the symptoms are very similar in terms of what happens to the disks, but the drives do not click! Iomega tech support never heard of this, naturally. Although cheap, I don't care much for CD-RWs, so I've gone to MO disks---much more reliable, I've never had a failure.

Big Capacity, Easy to Use.......2004-01-28

I have been happy with my three older zip drives, and this drive is continuing my unbroken string of satisfaction with Iomega products.

Installation: The software installed cleanly. I love boring installations!

Connectivity: The drive ran fine on a hub. It helps that it is self-powered and doesn't need to draw power off the USB line. It comes with an adapter-at least my drive did. (The "Technical Data" section of this site's product description says that the drive is powered by your USB cable. But if you choose to use the adapter, I doubt that that statement is correct.) I later installed a USB 2.0 card and gave the zip drive its own port, but it is still plugged into the adapter.

Speed: Speed is relative. Even with the obsolete USB 1, the 750 was faster than my 4x CD-RW, my previous backup engine. And now with USB 2.0, it writes a 175 MB zip file in 45 seconds.

Human Factors: Another reviewer complained that this drive is so lightweight that it just scoots backwards when you try to insert a disk. He's right. So I took a crude but effective approach to "planting" the drive. I took a big piece of duct tape and taped the drive to the top of my system unit. Now the drive is in a real handy spot, and it doesn't budge when I insert a disk. So what if it's no longer portable, and it's more like an internal drive. That's OK.

Vulnerable to static discharge? It is, according to one reviewer, who had a spark leap from his finger to the drive, and said spark temporarily knocked his drive out of commission. I have had no such problem because with the drive taped in place, I don't have to hold it down with one hand when inserting a disk. So I don't need to touch the case. Also, it may help that the drive is against my system unit's metal case.

Some nitpicking:
(1) This drive is much noisier than my previous three zip drives (all internal). Its "zip" noises are loud and raspy.
(2) Dust might get inside the drive because there is more air space around the door than I have ever seen on a drive. I hope it won't collect enough dust to damage it. I see no way to safely clean it out.
(3) Iomega innovates so quickly that any Iomega product you buy may soon be obsolete.

SAVE THE ANTI-STATIC BAG that the drive ships in. If you ever need to carry the drive somewhere, you can use the bag to protect it from static and keep that loose penny in your purse or briefcase from slipping into it.

January, 2007 update: I ended up buying two of these drives. However, the first drive has now died after about three years of normal use with no spill, fall, or other accident. My concern about dust (#2 under nitpicking, above) might be more than a nit, after all.

A Really Awful Design.......2005-07-31

I continue my search for a good hands-free telephone headset...This isn't it! I bought it along with two others (neither of which was good either) and immediately noted the problem with it. The ear piece is WAY WAY WAY too large for anyone with even a medum sized ear. It is the largest in-ear earpiece I've ever seen on a headset. It is either made for men (and it probably wont' fit some of them either) or people with really large ears. The sound quality is acceptable, but it's hard to tell how well it works because I can barely stuff it into my ear. It's hard to tell how people at the other end hear me either. Save your money on this one.

Dead after 1 year of lightly use. Symptoms same as described by Eric L. Carlson's comments. Two red light (Status and Print Error), port status led keep flashing.

I thought it was just me but i'm convinced otherwise after reading the reviews here.

Yesterday my (read "this") router broke down. The same way the others here (like Eric L Carson) etc reported. Two lights red. Two lights green.

The router does what it says, but it obviously comes with a lifespan which is only slightly longer than the warranty period. When i pay for something, i want it to work for at least a while beyond the warranty period (given that i take good care of it). This one obviously doesn't.

Now i have to go hunting for a new one...

Worked fine for a couple years.......2005-05-29

Worked fine for a couple years - a lot better than my previous (different brand) router - then a few days ago (May 2005), it just stopped working.

Now the Status and Print Err lights remain red (I never had a printer connected to it), and the Power and Print Act lights remain green, and any ports with computers connected just flash slowly. I tried holding in the reset button for a long time, and I even tried letting is sit completely unplugged for a few days, then resetting again, but it is still dead.

I have my router and cable modem connected to my UPS, and there were no power problems the day, so I don't think it was a power surge that caused it to die.

I see that one other person had this exact same problem. I would love to know what the problem is, so contact me if you have an idea (It's pretty simple to find my web site).

Fortunately, I already had another good router (3rd brand) to replace it with, so I'm still online. And I just bought an additional router (4th brand), at a very good sale price, to have as a backup.

Buyer Be Aware: Warranty not honored if purchased online.......2004-06-16

I bought this item October 2003 and it broke down today. After holding for 15 minutes to talk with a tech support, I was told since I bought this from an online retailer, Amazon, the company's policy is not to honor the warranty as "anyone can sell online and therefore we don't know what they could have done to the product." Needless to say, I am extremely disappointed. I hope you don't.

2 strikes and your out.......2003-11-03

Replaced a DI-701 with this thing. I bought this router for ONE reason... The box said 10/100 on BOTH sides LAN & WAN. In MY configuration, I have it between my private LAN workstations and my public net access and servers, so I want 100 between workstations and servers. It did seem to xfer at more than 10mbps when it WORKED.

The FIRST one I bought, after about 2 weeks, it started acting up, looking like it reset itself, but when that happened, no private machines could hit the public side. Needed a power-cycle to fix about every 8 hours. If I let it go on like that long enough (like overnight whilst sleeping--I know, what good sysadmin ever sleeps right?? lol), it would blow the whole LAN AND WAN, public AND private and NONE of my servers would then be accessible from ANYWHERE.
So I called Siemens, they said go ahead and exchange it where I bought it, so I did.
So here is the second one. Running great up until last Friday (about 6 months or so) when we had a power failure that was long enough to drain all the UPS backups, and the computers shutdown fine and all.
When the power came back on, the Power and PrintAct lights were green and the Status and Print Err lights red, (no printer hooked up to the printserver port) and with any comps hooked up to the switch ports, it would just continually cycle the lights through each port. NO ACCESS between ANY machines.
So now Im back on the 701 till I can find a GOOD KNOWN name brand (D-link, Linksys or 3com($$$ouch$$$) that has 100 on BOTH sides.

BIC should buy Siemens and sell these things right along side their disposable razors and lighters. For $30, thats about what it is. I am NOT taking this one back. Im donating it to BFI for landfill use. The wall-wart power supply may come in handy somewhere though...lol

Worked like a charm, even on older computers.......2005-03-31

I bought 2 of these, along with an SMC Barricade router/access point. I had no problem setting them up at all. I used one on a Windows 2000 laptop (an older one without network card), another on Windows XP Home. I recently moved the laptop one to an older P2 Windows 98 SE, and it recognized the network first time. The only issue I had was of my own making. I have both a home network and one using MS Groups. Still, once I figured out my problem, everything worked fine. The issue I had was strictly with directory sharing, nothing else. Highly recommend!

Fails when other wireless adapter work........2005-01-03

This adapter worked Ok for me under Win98. PC running 98 would stay connected while two XP PC's (Home and Pro) would frequently drop connections with SS1022. Friends brought over an iMac with a Airporte wireless adapter - it never dropped. Toshiba and Dell laptops with integrated wireless never drop. Email to support@speedstream.com (listed in their documentation) bounces. I've purchased two 50ft patch cables until I evaluate a replacement router.

I have installed and used three of these adapters on 2 desktop machines and 1 laptop, running Win98, Win2000, and WinXP. The adapter is extremely easy to install, the wireless utility is very informative and intuitive, the adapter has good range and looks good. I recommend it very highly!

I bought my SpeedStream Wireless USB Adapter almost an year ago. I had issues about the reception, because I already tried the NETGEAR one. I had no reception with the Netgear products and when I plug the Siemens one, I was surprised. I got 60 to 66% signal against 0% by Netgear.
Bottom line is that I advice you to choose this product if you want to be most satisfied from using your internet, or network at all!

Won't work with Windows 98SE.......2004-03-20

The requirements say that it will work with Windows 98SE. I tried two different computers with windows 98SE and it didn't work with either one. I spoke with the tech support and they didn't know anything about it not working with 98. They were no help. I tried it on ME and 2000Pro and it worked perfectly. Very easy to install on anything other than 98. As long as it is not on 98, it works great and I am really happy with it. The range has been great, at about 30 feet through 4 walls I get full power. Comes with a long usb to be able to place it where ever is best. Worth the money.
