UPDATE March 3, 2007: I Did NOT rate this item with five stars. I rated this item with a single star, and it held that rating for a while. But tonight I noticed the rating had changed, and there doesn't seem to be any way to change it back. I have not had many (or any) positive experiences with Iomega and I'll never purchase another Iomega product unless there is absolutely no other option (and even then I still might not but it).

I purchased this Iomega drive at the end of July 2006. I'm writing this review on September 10, 2006. Several hours ago this drive completely died. I've spent hours trying to diagnose and solve the problem, but it appears the drive is completely dead. My last ditch effort was to come back here to Amazon to see if someone else had a similar issue, but no such luck. The device won't load on any of the three computers that I have been using. The blue power light just flashes repeatedly (previously it would remain steady when it was on). I spent $120 on this item and it's got about 5 GB of data on it, and now it seems to be completely fried. It's less than three months old! I've been keeping it in a reinforced pocket of my laptop bag and I've been very careful with it. But when I plugged in the device a few hours ago, all I got was a flashing light. I've been burned by Iomega before (one of their Zip drives and a network adapter), but I decided to give them another chance with this drive. I'll never buy another Iomega product again. All of my experiences have resulted in lost data, lost cash, and increased blood pressure.

It does not work with all computers.......2006-07-05

We bought one but it did not work with HP computers. After hours of tech support they sent us several "new" items which had the same problem. They finally sent a new one which (surprise surprise ) ......... did not work as well. "It Did not work" means that it stopped the backup and the computer could not see the drive.

In some computers it does work ( Dell ) for example ( after they sent us several items, of course) but with HP, forget about it.

We wanted to return it and get the money back - they refused.

Good policy for the company, bad for the consumer.

3 months and doing well.......2006-03-25

I've had this drive for three months now, and it's working like a charm. I'm running XP on an IBM Thinkpad (T40) so I took another reviewer's advice and reformatted it from FAT32 to NTFS. If you'd like instructions on how to do this, go to Microsoft's web site and search for 'NTFS'. The first search result (at time of writing) explains how to do it.

My Thinkpad recognized the drive right away, and converting it to NTFS was quick and easy. As for power, the USB port on my Thinkpad powers the device just fine, however when I tried using it with the 4 port USB hub connected to my HP desktop at home I found it didn't provide enough power, so I had to use a USB port directly on the PC rather than use the hub.

I carry this device everywhere in my backpack, and while I don't think I've dropped it, I certainly haven't given any special care. It just gets tossed in with my other books and papers, and so far no problems.

Great Backup Drive.......2006-02-28

Backed up everything on our two home computers on this one drive. Ended up buying two - will probably put one drive in our safety deposit box. This has been the easiest, fastest and best solution of all the various back-up scenarios we have tried over the years. Great product!!

Compact, Small HD, Easy to use, great service from Iomega.......2006-02-12

I received the 40GB portable USB Iomega HD yesterday. It was smaller than I had thought, and easy to set up. However the laptop did not recognize the drive initially. After a short online chat (easy to contact at Iomega.com) with the Iomega tech, who walked me through reformatting the HD, as it appears that the HD formatting was erased during scanning while enroute, the drive letter was immediately recognized, and then very easy to use. I love it, and have used the software for computer to computer data transfers, as well as storage backups on the Iomega HD. Excellent value. The tech also verified that I had enough current (500mA in my case) for the HD to work with only one USB plug, although two options do come with the HD. I am functioning very well on the one USB wire versus the other which has two USB jacks. Great for a laptop, carrying with you.I am totally satisfied with the device, and its operation.

Adequate for general purposes.......2004-05-05

Not bad for the price. Adequate for email attachments and snapshots. The picture quality depends largely on the amount and type of available lighting. It seems to work best outdoors on bright days; not nearly as well with indoor lighting. No big surprise there. However, the major drawback is that the batteries continue to drain at an alarming rate, even when the camera shuts off. A word of advice: if you don't want to lose your stored photos, upload them to your PC as soon as you have the opportunity. Leave this one sitting around for a day or so and you'll find that you've wasted your time taking those pictures.

It's simply a all-right webcam. It's tiny and well-made.
For its resolution, I don't think it's good enough. Put

Don't want to pay too much?.......2003-04-08

I bought this camera because I wanted an affordable, digital camera that was small to carry around. I don't have any trouble with the viewfinder. All pictures matched what I took. But battery life wasn't very good. A good idea would be to get a couple RECHARGABLE AAA batteries. The pictures are OK quality. The best is outside. Otherwise, this is a great lil camera if you want to get started and don't want to pay too much!

You get what you pay for............2003-01-20

I was looking for a camera that was affordable and had decent resolution for taking pictures for my auctions. I ran across this camera and picked it up. The package boasted great image quality for pictures and also worked as a webcam.

The picture quality was not too bad when you can get it to take pictures. If you take alot of indoor pictures, make sure you have a 500 watt halogen lamp handy. I could only occaisionally get pictures taken under normal household lighting. Outdoor daytime pictures generally came out great in either image mode (high resolutio- 27 pictures....low resolution-107 pictures). What I could never understand was the image quality and light sensitivity was perfect when used as a webcam. I also found that this little camera had a nasty tendancy to suck up batteries at a fairly costly rate.

Another annoyance is the viewfinder. No matter how I lined up the shot in the viewfinder I was bound to cut the top off of a head, or the side of a box.

If you are looking for a camera to take some quick outdoor shots, or a webcam that you can use to take some pictures on occaision, then you might enjoy this camera. Quirks aside, the compact size and picture quality (under good lighting) is generally good.

Hopefully Aiptek has improved on later versions of this camera. I would not suggest paying retail prices for this camera. If you can find one in the [$$$] range, it might be worth it.

Worked well, for 3 years..........2006-10-20

I've had this register for just over 3 years and it just froze up yesterday. I'm assuming it had something to do with me replacing the batteries but I can't be sure. It worked really well for the first 2 years, then the power went out and the backup batteries only store the information for about an hour or so then it dumped ALL my data. So, back to square one... had to re-program it all over again, quite the hassle. I'm now going to purchase a register that has some sort of backup system that does not require batteries. Oh, and this register is super loud... when I was ringing stuff up, I couldn't hear my customers talk to me! I'll be sure to rate the next register I buy!

The software mentioned on my May 16th review IS called "AVID Xpress" -- not "AVID Express" -- when my review was edited someone changed the spelling, possibly thinking it was a typo/mistake?

GREAT CAMERA! A DELIGHT! FUN ! A PLEASURE!.......2002-05-16

I bought the TRV 900 in September of 1999 and have been very pleased these past few years. This camera is lightweight enough to travel with...with me, it's been from Italy to Arizona...and produces clean, colorful pictures. I can also grab "still" pictures from my videos and have a perfectly captured photo (i.e. the perfect smile on someone's face or a moment in which a bird dives into a shot etc.) My only wish with this photo function is that the still photos had better picture quality...as good as the video. Nevertheless, it is still a fun function and allows me to send my photos from trips to others via email. The camera has many special effects which are fun to work with such as black and white, sepia tone, negative (great for manually made titles), slim (make yourself thinner!), stretch (make people on the beach fatter!), posterized effects etc...if you can edit in your head, these effects can save rendering time later. (For editing, I've used AVID EXpress DV. The Sony TRV 900 footage loads nicely into the AVID Express DV editing system and is a pleasure to work with. AVID Express DV editing software is expensive (2K) and does have somewhat of a learning curve but with time and effort is well worth the money. If you get this software and you're new to editing, get a turnkey system from a place such as Promax. )

Sony Handycam [messed] up my computer.......2002-04-29

The USB software bundled by Sony for transferring images to computer COMPLETELY [MESSED] UP MY SYSTEM. The installation is very dicey. You need to do things in a precise order. It is prone to getting [messed] up,... it can't be fixed. As usual, the Sony software is a mess.
Their instructions for unscrambling the mess don't work. They just get you deeper into the woods.
Be sure to get the extended warranty if you buy this product. You will probably need it. As for the computer, it may require a complete disk wipe and reinstallation. God help you if you have RAID or something else. WHAT A MESS. Sony is big enough that they don't care. They don't have to.

Great - without a single doubt.......2002-01-17

I find myself using the DCR-TRV900 as a digital camera almost as a matter of course. I purchased the Sony 64Mb memory card (you need to also buy the PCMCIA attachment that it fits in) and taking pictures is a veritable joy. The supplied floppy drive is next to useless - in fact, I don't know how you'd use it in an active environment. There are manual options: aperture setting (depth of field) and shutter speed (great for darker environments)among them. You can also record stills right on the tape and later extract them on your computer. Transfering video and stills to a PC is effortless; I use the IEEE 1394 (Firewire) interface. To make great movies, including voice over (if needed) and background music, I'm happy with Ulead Video Studio rather than the Microsoft XP Windows Movie Maker program - which appears to be a minimal implementation of Ulead's program. Adobe Premier 5.0 might still be better, but I'm not professional enough to shell out [that kind of money] or so for that program. By the way, Ulead also allows you to create NTSC VCD files, which, once downloaded to a regular CD-
ROM (I use Easy Cd Creator Platinum), can be played on your DVD player (not all of them, but certainly those produced in the last 2 years). Anyway, a great camcorder and camera; I find myself walking around with it for hours on end - it just feels good!

But click on the review from Wayne C4 listed here where it says "Wayne C4 (see more about me)" and he has reviewed 40 + items with many of them using the same words in the review or with only a few words changed. And the items are similar that he reviewed. So he has obviously not purchased these items. So be careful what you read here. Shame on you Wayne C4.
